Ew. I decided to give it a try because of its location, but clearly made a mistake. I ordered the orange chicken and it was battered and served in a very sweet, one note, simple syrup sauce. There was canned pineapple with it. The soup was just very plain and underwhelming. I also made the mistake of getting a Thai tea, which tasted like milk. Horrible experience. Food was very blah and the wait staff was actually rude. The takehome boxes wouldn't close (all broken at our table). One of our party asked for some tape and the waitress said loudly and emphatically "NO!". So my friend got up to get some tape near the register and the waitress actually went there and hit my friend's hand. NONE OF OUR PARTY WILL EVER GO BACK. I had a full day w/ Gavin (farmers' market, brunch, museum, beach, Target, and Trader Joe's), I figured it was time to feed our hunger. Enticed by the price more than ever, I walked in and was a bit leery because Asian establishments is scarce in Santa Cruz; Americanized Asian restaurants certainly do not count. I was greeted by a rather solemn and stern looking Chinese woman. She sat us down and gave us a menu. I liked having the pitcher of iced water on the table as I can refill it whenever I please. Kudos to that. The menu is rather extensive. Since we are still w/in the lunch time range, I ordered from that part of the menu. Each entree comes w/ a cup of soup, a piece of fruit (on your plate), and won ton strips. The hot and sour soup was awful. I think it's a crime to even call it "hot and sour soup". My son seemed to have enjoyed his egg drop soup. I didn't try it. W/ the help from my server, she suggested Mongolian rice plate because it is spicy. It is not spicy, BTW but I did like that the beef was tender. My son's chow mein and fried rice combo was a winner. Despite the slightly funny taste from the chow mein, I will not complain because I paid under $5 for it. It was very filling. On a budget? Want Chinese food? First they charge extra to have white rice come with my dinner entre, then extra to have broccoli with my Walnut Prawns (normally comes with that dish), then the dish is practically dropped on my table and the server takes off and disappears into the kitchen for over five minutes. I have to flag her down to tell her the broccoli was cold, and could I please have it warmed up? She says no, it comes cold. After going back and forth, (I ask if it could be sauteed?), she says no, then she says it can be heated up for an additional $5 charge. I told her that's insane. Just bring me a take out box. Now I hear her angrily talking in Cantonese to the chef. (Presumably about me and my desire for a warm dinner.) Ordered Uber eats and got the "honey" walnut shrimp, rice, and sesame balls. I was very excited as not even Panda Express can mess up a honey walnut shrimp. However, upon my first bite I was confused as I thought what I was eating a slice of cake. The entirety of the dish tasted like frosting... even the walnuts seemed to be soaked in a Betty Crocker like frosting. I called the restaurant and asked what they use to sweeten the shrimp to which they replied sugar and milk. There is no honey in it whatsoever and it definitely comes through in the final flavor. Unfortunately it was the worst honey walnut shrimp I had ever had and one measly plate costed a whopping $23 before delivery or tax. Please mayflower if you are reading this USE HONEY IN YOUR HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP! I am really saddened by my experience and unfortunately will not be returning. read more

I've been struggling to find a Chinese place nearby that was good and not just average, but from the first time I've eaten here it has only been amazing. Delicious food, incredibly fast service for both sit down and take out. Every dish I've had has been very flavorful without being super greasy. The honey walnut shrimp is the perfect amount of sweetness for me; most other places end up making it too sweet and I can only eat two or three shrimp, but here I can and happily do eat the whole serving. Veggie chow mein has a great flavor and consistency. Spring rolls are nice and flaky. Lemon chicken is moist and not over-sauced. Staff are always very friendly and helpful. Lots of variety in the menu but everything I've had so far has been wonderful. Definitely would recommend! read more

This place had the worst Chinese food I've ever experienced. My bf & I tried it 'cause it was late and close by my apartment. I ordered Hot & Sour soup. I've ordered this soup at a myriad of restaurants over the years, always getting something similar; maybe one's a little thinner. maybe one's a little more sour, but you can count that it's essentially the same which ever Chinese place you go to. Not at Mayflower. At Mayflower it's SWEET. Yes, SWEET Hot & Sour soup! It had a wierd yellow color, it was so sweet we could not eat it. We got a shrimp dish that tasted fishy like they weren't fresh, again inedible for me, and the Chicken Mu Shu was also not very good; very pale in color with a lot of onions- couldn't eat that eithor. The only dish I could tolerate was the fried rice, tho some of the pork was fatty. And this wasn't cheap! Fried rice, soup, & 2 entres cost us just over $60! Got here around 3:00pm and surprisingly found they serve lunch specials from 11:00am till 4:30pm! When I was seated I asked for water and they brought me a nice, full carafe of ice water with lemon...nice start. Hmm, for the food is where it starts to go askew. All lunch specials come with a starter of Egg Flower or Hot and Sour soup. Avoid the Hot and sour...trust me on this. It is NOT spicy as most hot and sour concoctions I've had at the majority of Chinese places. Very odd combo of canned tomato soup, sugar, a few veges. Ordered the Hunan Beef Rice Plate ($7.95) lunch special which came with huge portion of steamed rice, 2 very hard wontons with a artsy drizzle of sweet and sour sauce, frou-frou vege garnish of 3 carrot slices and 2 pieces of cold steamed broccoli. The portion of "Hunan beef" was on the skimpy side, 6 or 7 small pieces of of thinly slice beef deep fried with a crispy coating atop of a bit of fried rice noodles and sweet & salty glaze. While they note it's spicy you may wished you ordered it extra spicy as it's not. Flavor was on the bland side, while they claim NO MSG is used they make it up with a that liberal sprinkling of salt--thank goodness for that carafe of water. Service while friendly is business like. I did notice they are more chatty with their "regulars" though with a bit more spoonful of sugar and everything nice. Since there aren't too many choices for a late Chinese lunch on this side of 41st...well, you decide? PLUSES: They bring you a nice full carafe of ice water. Food presentation is nice. Place is clean and seems to draw it's faithful locals. MINUSES: portions on the skimpy side, mediocre tasting. Avoid the most oddest Hot & Sour soup unless you like tomato soup heated up with sugar like some of the reviewers describe...it's all terrifyingly true! read more

I've been going to mayflower for a while now and enjoyed the food until recently. I took my family to Mayflower a couple days ago and got horrible service ! Not once did the waitress check on us and asked if we needed anything else . We were waiting to order more food but the waitress was with other customers which we completely understand (I used to work at a restaurant ) and when she came to us she brought us the check ! We told her we still wanted to order more food and she gave us attitude for it. This problem could have been easily avoided if they would've checked in with us at least once. read more

This is one place in several Chinese restaurants we went to that uses fresh ingredients and very tender beef. We really love the huge slices of ginger used in beef or chicken with green onions and ginger. Their veggie chow mein is plentiful and moist. The service is very prompt also. read more
