Mayhurst has become our family's home away from home! We cannot keep ourselves, or our kids away for more than a few months! I came across Mayhurst on Instagram - I'm a lover of history and old homes! - and on a whim, I called to get some more information. Casey (or Ms. Casey, as my kids call her) answered the phone and was just as sweet and lovely on the phone as she comes across online! She was so helpful planning our first visit and letting me know all of the amenities and things to do around the area. The best part was - she loved kids and was totally welcoming to the idea of having our two boys stay as well! (not many bed and breakfast owners get excited when you tell them you are bringing two kids and possibly your dog along with you!!) We have stayed in different rooms for each of our trips and every room we stay in has its own unique character and charm. The rooms are comfortable and have all of the amenities we would need for our stay. Breakfast is my favorite and everything prepared is delicious! We eat in the beautiful dining room or on the back porch or down on the patio surrounded by the gardens. From that first trip we have visited three more times, each during a different time of the year and got to experience the area in all of the seasons! During our stays, we have visited the town of Orange, Shenandoah National Park, Colonial Williamsburg, Gordonsville and Montepilier. (all good day trips) Ms. Casey guided us to excellent restaurants and historic spots to check out in the area. With all of the great spots to visit, you would think my kids would pick one of those places as their "favorite reason to visit" - but each time we leave and we ask them what they loved best, their immediate answer is just, "being at Mayhurst". My kids can spend the entire day walking the grounds, swinging on the swings and enjoying the lake or farm animals. Ms. Casey's eldest son has hit celebrity status in our household. He has become such a positive role model for my sons and always makes time to show them around his workshops. When people ask me why we visit so often, I always tell them that it is the perfect place for my active boys to just, "be boys" and where we can spend quality time as a family. If you are looking for a spot to go to "get away from it all', definitely consider staying at Mayhurst. You will be swept back in time to a place where you can leave all of the rush and busy world behind and just "be". This is my FAVORITE place I have ever stayed in my life. Ever. I would seriously live here if I could haha. Casey is the most beautiful, friendly, welcoming hostess. I would stay there again just to talk with her more! (And enjoy her delicious cooking). Her food is to DIE FOR. We stayed here for our anniversary, so we did the romance package which included the picnic lunch, chocolate-covered strawberries, gorgeous fresh flower bouquet, and champagne. For lunch we had chicken salad sandwiches. Okay, I don't even like chicken salad sandwiches, but I was OBSESSED with these. Such a unique and wonderful flavor! The homemade cheesecake was also yum and the breakfast...my husband was in heaven haha. The house and grounds were so stunning, peaceful, and restful. I felt like I could breathe deeper than I had in a long time. We stayed in the Southern Charm room. The name fits it perfectly! Loved all the old windows with the shutters you could close and open. This intricately-designed and masterfully-restored home made my romantic heart sing! I'm a Jane Austen-loving old soul, so it was a dream come true for me. I could have stayed there for days and days, simply walking the ground, canoeing the pond, and reading and writing on the benches around the house. If you are going to go, do yourself a favor and stay for at least 2-3 nights. I really wished we could have stayed there longer. It's so good for the soul--a place to be still and reflect and enjoy. Definitely not a place you want to just pop in for the night! You'll never want to leave. I already can't wait to go back. We're from Missouri, but it's worth it for us to drive out there just to stay again! Mayhurst in summer was great, but I want to see it in spring, fall, and winter too! The estate is magnificent on its own, don't get me wrong, but it's the Cashells that make this place one of a kind. You'll understand once you go too. I visited Mayhurst for the Storyteller's Retreat in late July, and it was absolutely incredible! I'm an old soul, a history lover, a nature lover, and a lover of old architecture, and Mayhurst satisfied all these desires of my heart. Casey was the most welcoming, genuinely hospitable host you will ever meet. From the moment she swept open those huge, gorgeous front doors, gave me a tour of the home, and sat me down for a chat, I felt like I had stepped back in time. It is so rare to get this personal one-on-one attention in today's world. But Casey and her amazing helper Emma served my daughter and me tirelessly and sacrificiously the 3 nights that we were there. Our room was so beautiful, tranquil, and cozy. Every attention to detail was given. Breakfast was delicious, and the coffee station in the dining room was the nicest I've ever seen! That alone was reason enugh to return! Casey poured into the retreat attendees and me her wealth of knowledge concerning Instsgram and why we should even take the time to tell our stories for the world to see. The setting of Mayhurst was exactly what my soul needed to unwind, to reconnect with the Lord, to find peaceful refuge, and make wonderful new friends. I will always look back on that visit as being one of the most enchanting, insightful getaways of my life. I highly recommend this gorgeous place! read more

The whole experience was breathtaking - the grounds felt limitless and beautifully taken care of, and every detail carefully placed and even the chairs and hammocks were in perfect viewing spots for Relaxing and pure bliss. They even lit a bon fire which my friends and I sat around making s'mores and telling jokes until the wee hours in a private spot. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious and our host was the nicest most accommodating woman. There were no TVs which made me nervous at first, but we quickly realized that seemed to enhance the experience forcing us to be together and truly enjoy the company and peaceful ambiance of a beautiful plantation. We will be back for another dose of quiet with the most comfortable pillows. Even the 15-yo with us kept busy with the goats, walking the grounds and woods, and even hung out with us! My husband and I spent Valentines Day weekend at Mayhurst, and it was a lovely experience! We stayed in the Lincoln suite, which has its own living area and a reading nook, in addition to the bedroom. We enjoyed reading and talking by the fireplace. You could hear the classical music played in the entryway, which made it feel elegant and felt like we wouldn't be heard as easily. Breakfasts were delicious and served in the elegant dining area. Casey was very friendly and helpful. You can tell that they care very much about hospitality. There was still snow on the ground, so we didn't get to see as much of the property, but the house and grounds are beautiful. The architecture and decor were classic and beautiful. There are several nice restaurants nearby, and we visited Montpelier, the home of James Madison. I highly recommend staying at Mayhurst. read more

We visited Mayhurst and spent one night there this month. Jason, Casey, children are wonderful. Best hosts ever. Casey answered all ?'s and offered ideas of places to visit while there-all excellent choices. We toured Monpelier and ate at 2 wonderful restaurants. We met my sister there for Thanksgiving/Christmas celebration. The fireplaces were burning, home decorated beautifully for Christmas, so inviting, cozy and relaxing. It was all perfect. Love their little goat herd and the grounds! All just gorgeous. Jason and Casey are so accommodating. Jason is the chef and breakfast was amazing! Eggs benedict, potatoes, fruit, baked apple-never ate better. Again-beautiful estate, best hosts ever. We highly recommend this and we will visit again. read more

My wife and I stayed at the estate for two nights. One of the nights was our 50th wedding anniversary. I could not have found a more wonderful place for this happy occasion. Wow! Mayhurst is incredible. My whole experience was magical, I can't wait to go back. I went for a retreat and the moment I walked in the door I felt so welcome and loved.
