What a popular place! Park in an available spot and then the adventure begins, Grab some snacks at the concessions stand, grab a seat at the picnic table and enjoy a warm apple cider donut. Then, grab a tree saw and hop aboard the hayride and enjoy the ride before you hop off and find the perfect tree. Lots of options and they will load it on the hayride for you on the way back. Then, wait for them to shake and wrap your tree before loading it in the car. You pay for the tree on the way out so follow the signs and at attention to the two lines based on forms of payment. Mayne's Tree Farm is known for its Christmas trees just outside of Frederick, Maryland in Buckeystown. As you drive through the town, you'll notice massive Victorian style homes. Once you arrive at the farm, follow the signs for parking. Mayne's Tree Farm's tagline is "More than just trees" and it's true. We went in October to pick pumpkins. Once we arrived, a hayride took us to the pumpkin patch where we grabbed a wheelbarrow and went pumpkin hunting. Six large pumpkins later, we were paying 69 cents per pound (not a bad price!). As you pay for your pumpkins, you'll notice a little stand with concessions, including cherry pies, a seating area and a little market where you can buy more pumpkins, decorative corn and apple cider donuts. Despite the above, I'm giving it one star for racism. During our entire visit, there was only one family of color there- a friendly family of a mom, dad, a son and daughter. As the daughter (around the age of fourteen or so) was checking out, I overheard the older woman behind the cash register whisper to a younger worker (maybe her son), "Keep an eye on her. I don't want her stealing anything." There was absolutely no reason to think she'd steal something unless you're racist. Because of this experience, I will never go back to this farm. I cannot support a business that treats people of color differently. read more

I'm really sad to write this review. This was somewhere we loved going. No complaints ever. If you have little ones I'd be iffy on bringing them. You will be humiliated should they step on a leaf or bush even though it's not malicious and you apologized. I left in tears. read more

Avoid at all costs. The manager has yet to fix the traffic flow problem. He has had this problem for several years and has done nothing to change it. If the sheriff needs to be called on multiple occasions and you STILL don't change your flow that shows no accountability and no consideration for the customer and the experience. He yelled at us, banged on our car, scared our kids, and said stupid (which then led to our 3 young kids asking way too many questions). A younger employee cursed as well. We will be ending our 35 year tradition here. There is no excuse for waiting 2 hours in a parking lot. Butler's has trees now and I highly recommend anyone in the DMV head there. They are family friendly and accustomed to working with large scale traffic patterns. read more

This is our second year coming for a tree. We thought the prices last year were great so we came back for a great priced tree, however this year the trees are about the same as everywhere else. We hoped that the poor parking and payment situation from last year would be resolved, but it seemed even worse this year. I have had better experiences at the farm before the covid pandemic. The pumpkin patch was easy to get to and the kids had a nice time. The setting is beautiful. But, they are not really following safety guidelines related to the pandemic. The employees don't wear masks. The cashier wears this very floppy type mask under her chin. It does not cover her nose or mouth and you have to go up close to pay and have the pumpkins weighed. The owner doesn't wear a mask either at least the day we went there and he walks around talking to people. The hayride is not socially distanced and the driver does not wear a mask. Because of all of this, we won't go back. Same experience in the Spring with strawberry picking. Cashier was not wearing a mask. read more

I'm doing the best i can to give honest stars when i wasn't able to visit. The reason for the low stars is, at least for 2021 they CLOSED WAY TOO EARLY FOR THE SEASON! Could possibly be related to 'the tree shortage", but if not, closing Dec 10th is too, too early. Not everyone wants to act like Macy's and decorate the day after thanksgiving. Many people still want their tree up through the whole Christmas season (through Jan 6th), so don't put up our trees until mid December. Hoping Mayne's reads this and stays open longer in the season. Never in my life have been to this pumpkin patch before and I've always passed it on the way to work. The staff is rlly sweet and so welcoming, fun place for all ages of ppl to go too. Nice hay ride and a mixture of different kinds of pumpkins. I highly recommend Mayne's tree farm. They also have a small area of yard sale stuff that is awesome quality. This place is amazing - was looking for a no frills pumpkin patch without the crowds and extraneous activities and this place fit the bill. They have an amazing patch that you get to on a 5 minute tractor ride with so many different kinds of pumpkins. I could have spent all day there. The pumpkin variety is great - huge white pumpkins, giant tomato pumpkins, regular pumpkins. They sell a variety of other stuff including an awesome arrangement of gourds and nice colorful corns. My mom and I went today to get our Christmas tree, choosing Mayne's rather randomly via internet search. When we arrived, there was a huge line of cars and we were concerned that it would take us a long time and be a bit stressful, but the line was moving quickly, and they had someone guiding traffic into open parking spots. We chose a cut tree rather than going and picking one to cut down, though they do offer that option. It was only $45 for a tree that is somewhere between 6 and 7 feet, which is a much lower price than I have paid at tree lots that were not local farms. The tree is now up in our living room and it's perfect! It's thick, fat, very green, and beautiful. We also got our (great!) tree stand, some apple cider from a local orchard, tree food, and a couple of lovely ornaments. The people were friendly and helpful. They bound the tree in twine to hold the branches in for transport, which made putting it up easier, too. Hayrides were happening, too. Leaving was a little slower, but we learned that the reason for that was that many people were paying for their trees on their way out, as opposed to in the little shop where we paid for our with the rest of the loot. So, options! Yay! Overall, we are VERY happy with the products, prices, and service. We will go back next year, for sure! And probably in October for our pumpkins, which they also do. read more

We came on a Saturday this year instead of our usual day after Thanksgiving. The tree selection was very sad - lots of short trees that are far too short for putting in a living room, and the ones that were the height you'd want were poorly shaped. The farm was clearly picked over and it is only December 2nd!! In addition to the poor selection, the process for check out once you have your tree was so incredibly slow. The line to have your tree shaken and bailed was at least 60-70 people long and just two staff to handle it. The line to pay upon leaving was at least 50 cars and the entire parking lot was full of cars trying to pay and leave. It was similar to being in a concert parking lot after the show. No one was moving and everyone was just sitting there. The problem? There are just two lanes to pay and one is cash/check only - not that anyone with cash/check could get there because they we're stuck in the parking lot waiting. Why they didn't have both lines taking credit to move customers through is completely inexcusable. We ultimately gave up looking for a tree because we couldn't find a good one and we didn't want to wait in line for 2 hours. Every other time I've been it hasn't been super busy and the experience was great. Add a crowd and this place becomes completely dysfunctional. I'll be looking for a new farm next year. What a frustrating disappointment. What a crappy start to the holiday season. Thanks for nothing, Maynes. read more

We had a female employee stand in front of our car for over 15 minutes preventing us from moving and said she wasn't going to let us leave (with our children sitting in the backseat). Traumatic to say the least. Owner walked by and blamed "the media" (???) for the overcrowded parking lot issues. Will not be returning. read more

The trees are beautiful. Amazing selection. Which makes this two stars instead of one. We went the day after thanksgiving and there were lots to choose from. Unfortunately as one of the previous reviews stated, add a crowd and this place becomes dysfunctional. The tree wrapping was fine. But the system for checking out and leaving the parking lot is sooooo inefficient. After tying up our tree we sat in our car for at least an hour and a half! With only two check out lanes it was ridiculously slow. One cash one credit. They really need to figure out a faster way for customers to pay. Clogging the only exit by also making it the checkout is just not a good idea. Even cars without a tree had to wait in the line. It's understandable that first day of the season is gonna be busy, but they really need to figure out a better system for paying without clogging the exit. It's unfortunate because the trees really were beautiful. But we learned our lesson and will not be coming back next year. Best to find another tree farm. read more

This place is ridiculous and totally archaic. Be prepared to wait an hour to exit because their way of accepting payments is to create a six mile long line for everyone to pay one at a time with only one lane for 500 cars to exit at instead of getting with the times and finding a simple solution (iPhones with card readers while your tree is being wrapped, maybe, duh) and, you know, an easier way for cars to leave would be lovely too. Didn't even find a tree his year because all the Douglas firs were smalllllll. Waste of time and not a good way to get in the Christmas spirit. read more

For years, we cut down our tree but we are no longer young and need now to get a tree that has already been cut down. For the past 4 years, we have gone to Maynes and purchased a tree already cut. The trees were always good but each year, they have gotten better and this year, our tree was perfect. Between 8 1/2 feet to 9 feet tall, the tree was full and shaped perfectly. It brought so much joy to my family. We went during the week and it was not crowded. The people that worked at Maynes were very helpful and checking out was great. We will continue to go to Maynes for our Christmas tree although I'm not sure how we would be able to get one better than this year's. Thank you Maynes. read more

Love the experience. We have been here the last 6 years. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. To address specific concerns on other reviews: I definitely would say a large number of what I would call "DC folks or newer Frederick folks" have discovered Maynes and can make it VERY busy. I have been there once at a peek time and the Small tradition farm family does its best but you will probably wait longer if you go then. If you want the corporate farm with everyone owning multiple iPads and some CEO calculating the operational efficiency w spaghetti diagrams this farm run but a family that goes back hundreds of years is perhaps not for you. I went to cut down my first Christmas tree ever over the weekend and I couldn't have picked a better place! The entire staff was extremely friendly and the prices were half what the other farms in the area were. The concession stand with fresh cider was a must. This was my first time here. Came on a weekday to avoid the crowds people mention. Great selection of precut trees. Friendly staff. Precut trees have to have an inch recut off the bottom before you take them home, because the sap dries and blocks water. Have always had this done when buying cut trees at other places. When the tree was taken to be prepped to put in the car, I didnt follow and just assumed it would be part of the process, since is a professional farm. It wasnt apparently done, as the tree has never taken any water and is completely dried out already a week before xmas. I will take partial blame that I didnt ask about it, but a tree place should have asked if I wanted it done if it wasnt automatic, or told me it wasnt done and needed it, as that is proper care for a precut tree. Fact is, I dont have the appropriate tools to cut a tree trunk at home, so would always need it done at the site. Will not be back to this farm for a precut tree. Cut your own is probably fine from here read more

My family has purchased our tree from Mayne's for the past two years. We went on Sunday Dec 3rd this year in the morning and it wasn't crazy busy. They had a large selection of trees without having to cut your own and we selected one of those. We tried cutting last year and are just not the cut-your-own type of family! One piece of advice, bring cash if you can for your tree. The cash line is always much shorter than the credit line and you can get out faster. Also, go earlier in the day as it's not as crowded. I purchased my first live Christmas tree here! It was a nice excursion. There were many trees to choose from. One suggestion I would make, especially since I was a first timer, is to label things more. For example, I had to search for a saw to cut our tree down only to find out that they were back where we had gotten on the hay ride. At least it was only a short walk, but labeling that and the types of trees would make the place easier to navigate. Overall, a great experience, and they bale the tree for your to strap it on your car or put it in your trunk. read more

I come here in December for Christmas trees and in May/June for strawberries. The staff is friendly and helpful. For strawberries, you can either pick your own or buy them pre-picked. If you do pick your own, do yourself a favor and walk toward the far end of the field for better picking. read more

My girls and I picked strawberries yesterday afternoon. The strawberries were small and most of them were rotten. We picked up 3 boxes to fill up but only ended up being able to fill half of one box. They were 1.99/lb (which is the same price the grocery stores are charging for the big, beautiful strawberries) and less than 12 hours later, they were rotten. We had fun picking the strawberries but it would've been been better if we could've eaten the strawberries. read more

It took us 4x as long to pay as it did to walk 2 miles to find and bring back our tree. Having one line for credit card is beyond ridiculous! How can you go at least 2 years making your customers park in a horribly poor thought out parking lot that causes an hour or TWO of waiting to check out? It's frustrating enough that my family and friends are willing to drive farther away to avoid this disaster next year. So disappointed. Went here to get a cut-your-own Christmas tree after being hugely disappointed at another place. This was great! Great selection, lots of trees of several different types, and reasonably priced ($40-100 depending on type and size). We got an 8 foot Douglas fir for $45. They give you a tractor ride out to the trees and provide saws. You cut it down and take the tree back on the tractor. They shake and wrap it for you and provide rope; you tie it to the car yourself. They also sell wreaths, cute ornaments, live garland, concessions, etc. Everyone there was friendly, helpful, and, efficient. They have pre-cut trees too if that's your thing, but honestly if that's all you want you should just go to your local parking lot place. read more

We go here to get our wreaths every year and for the last three years we've had the same experience of unfriendly service inside the barn. You are welcomed by a big sign that says if you break it you bought it which really set the tone for their customer service level. Also trying to get out of the place is ridiculous because you sit in a line of cars trying to pay. This year the cashier tried to overcharge me by more than $30, when I brought it to her attention ,absolutely no apology. I also waited in line for roughly 15 minutes with one person in front because the cashier decided it was time to make bows instead of ringing people up. They need to get it together, have the Bows premade. Never any apologies for the wait, never an apology for charging us incorrectly, not even a thank you for shopping with us.
