We were seated promptly and a basket of hot, tasty hush puppies quickly followed. The food went downhill from here. My Philly Steak Burger was a chopped up frozen hamburger patty mixed with Mozzarella cheese, onions and peppers then served on an untoasted hoagie roll. It was oversalted, overcooked, and ended up at the table just moderately warm. With a little more attention in preparation this could have rated a very good but as served it rated a "meh". My "baked apples" side was a bowl of canned apple pie filling - it was not good. My dining companion tried the $18.99 seafood basket. This consisted of 3 scallops, 6 small fried shrimp and a huge serving of undercooked fries. She rated it a ripoff. The restaurant is clean and attractively decorated. Service was very attentive and helpful. However, even with the tasty, complimentary hush puppies, Mayo's rates as a 2- star restaurant due to the quality of the food and poor value. Went to Mayo's last night, 4 adults and 1 child. Had been before, expected lack of ambience and uneven service, but thought the food was decent. Unlike their online menu, the fried scallops were listed as Market price instead of $22. I ordered those and another ordered the scallops and calamari at $26 for the combo. One ordered shrimp and grits. One order of onion soup was inedible; like a can of Campbell's salty broth with a slice of bread on top and not an onion in sight. Onion rings came with an additional huge ball of onion and totally raw batter inside. Apple side was canned pie filling. But the surprise came with the bill. The combo with about 8 scallops and a pile of calamari was $26. The fried scallops with about 8 scallops and the aforesaid onion rings was $31! Although the hush puppies were great, we will never return. read more

Great food and service here at Mayo's. We stopped in for the first time and really enjoyed our meals. After being served the hush puppies before the meal, we then ordered our entrees. So, my wife Kathey chose the lightly breaded fried shrimp with some cabbage and fried okra. My pick was the seafood combo of fried cod and grilled scallops with cabbage and sautéed green beans. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was just as great. So glad we found this place. We certainly will be back again. read more

I want to like Mayo's, I really do... it's attractive when you walk in the door, a cute place with nice wall art & attractive booths. The staff is nice. But I've been underwhelmed both times I've been in for lunch. I appreciated the little plate of fried hush puppies brought to the table with our beverages but was caught by surprise both times by how sweet they were - sugar in the batter, so sweet rather than savory. The other day, I ordered the scallop burger with a side of cole slaw ... the first bite of my cole slaw and I was surprised by it being really sweet and soggy. I usually expect cole slaw to be a crunchy, crisp, bright counter-balance to my main dish. The scallops were beautifully cooked but served on a plain, dry, sweet bun. I considered using the tarter or cocktail sauce that was brought with them, but either would have overpowered their own natural deliciousness. I should have thought to ask for some butter and lemon, which would have been lovely with them, and even better, had the bun been buttered and toasted. But, as it was, everything just tasted sweet with no other balancing flavors. My lunch partner did enjoy his fried chicken (though found the cabbage and apple side dishes less appealing) and we both did enjoy the appetizer of fried pickles. As I said initially, I want to be supportive of this local restaurant and really like them, but I've just not yet found the dishes that quite delight my taste buds. read more

Contrary to the other reviewers, I had a pretty darn good experience at Mayo's in their new location on route 55. My mom and I decided to stop and have lunch here on the way out of town yesterday. The new location is part of a very small strip mall with a two door entrance, and has an attractive interior. I ordered a lunch special off their marker-board which was 2 filets of fried catfish, 2 sides (I opted for cole slaw and corn nuggets), hushpuppies, and tea. My mom ordered a fried shrimp salad. My fish was cooked perfectly. Beautiful golden exterior with just a thin layer of breading. The fish on the inside was still perfectly moist and flavorful. The slaw was a bit sweet, but typical of the area, and the corn nuggets were also fried up perfectly and tasted great. For those who don't know, corn nuggets are small balls of cream corn that are battered and fried. The hushpuppies were done just right, and even the tea was on point. Mom had similar good things to say about her salad. I got to try a shrimp and it was plump and juicy, and just like the other food, fried just right. The salad was also a really nice size. Both of our meals were under 10 bucks. We also had no service issues at all. It seems that this place might be rounding into form since the other reviews were published half a year ago. I know I will be back next time i'm in the area, I encourage you to give them a try. read more

We wanted to love it, we really did. And as a matter fact, we did love it when we walked in and saw the fresh clever decor, the bright dining room, the nautical theme done well, the big black and white photographs of North Carolina waterfront and farms on the walls, the booths and dividers made of what appears to be rescued barn wood. We loved the big table with the compass face on it. We even loved the look of the menu, full of respectable down east offerings like fish, chowders, shrimp burgers, oyster burgers and even scallop burgers. Everything was great. And then the food came. Our waitress was okay, kind of typical for the area. What was a bit disturbing was that the meal was delivered by a dangerously skinny older woman who emerged from the kitchen wearing a filthy apron and practically bending under the weight of our dishes. Honestly, I'd rather be served by my waitress, and not be exposed to the frazzled, sweating, undernourished cook in her stained kitchen garb. Let's be real: when you order broiled trout and you get a fairly tasty whitefish, you're not going to raise a scandal. Heck, the whitefish was good! It just. Wasn't. Trout. My baked sweet potato (hard to mess that one up) was burned in places. I liked my hot tea in its pretty ceramic cup (they've really *styled* the place well!), and my husband's sweet tea was, he said, "in the middle"--not too sweet, but not the best quality tea, probably not brewed--okay. The complementary corn fritters were average. The worst thing on the table was the down east clam chowder. Now, we understand that in this area of North Carolina, clam chowder is different, and not the red northeast type nor the milky type: it's more of a gray broth, not creamy at all, and is supposed to be packed with onion, potatoes, old bay seasoning, parsley, clams and--TASTE! This down east chowder was easily the most disturbingly tasteless brew I've ever had the displeasure to put in my mouth, more like dishwater than a soup. We told the waitress we couldn't eat it, and she obligingly took it off our bill. What to say? The ambience is terrific...like Charley's but up a good number of notches. Our question: why can't the food match the decor? They need to get someone else in the kitchen, at least for lunch when we went there. We will try it again, hoping against hope that this was just a bad day at Mayo's. read more

I eat Mayos faithfully once a week. There hush puppies are amazing and the Shrimp Burger is to die for. Their Shrimp are alway big and plump. I call in my orders because it's quicker. Their sweet tea is the best in the county. read more

We treated some friends to this place for the first time. We saw mixed reviews so we were shocked at the quality and service. Started with the onion ring appetizer. The dipping sauce was awesome. We then ordered, bang bang shrimp, crab cakes, blackened fish, shrimp and grits. All items were great. The prices were very reasonable as well. The service was great also. The dining room was nice with a large booth with a nautical theme. Actually nothing could have been better. I'd say we hit a home run here. I would most certainly come back. read more

Got the three seafood meal. Service was good. Flounder was good but a hair dry. Scallops were good. Baked potato was as expected. Crab cake was absolutely horrible. Horseradish is something some people (including me) absolutely hate. It should be mentioned in the description. Lima beans were pasty and most likely from a can. They did replace my crab cake with shrimp at no charge but they were just small shrimp you get from food lion, were a bit overcooked (like most restaurant shrimp), and weren't properly shelled. Love the food here! Every time we visit from Florida we eat there at least once or twice... The only think that needs definite improvement is the service. It appears if you are local, the service is great, if not, the service is not so great. Ate once this time in the dining room and the waitress only came to deliver the food and return with an item we requested and then the bill. Never came around to check on the food or see if we needed refills which we did! I would recommend some training in service and then I would give it a 5 star! read more

Horrible place to eat...everything looks good on the outside but behind the kitchen is DISGUSTING!!! They don't change the grease. It literally is dark brown. They cross contaminate and never wear gloves the girl who makes the wraps and sandwiches never has gloves on. Even after going to the bathroom never washes her hands. There is a bathroom in the kitchen. never seen anyone wash their hands. Tried to eat lunch on Sunday at 12:30pm. Came in and there was no sign to say "please wait to be seated". So we sat ourselves. After 15 minutes, all we had was silverware. Other people who came in after we did were being waited on. There were only 2 waitresses. During peak hours we've had this issue before. They have good food, but not enough wait staff. Our suggestion is to wait to be seated so they know you are actually there. read more
