    Drunken Noodles (Chicken)

I'll keep it simple. Eat from May's. Any time I'm in Ferndale or even in the Metro Detroit area, I make it a point to get the drunken noodles with chicken. Oh. My. Goodness. My uncle turned me on to this place last year and I'm super happy he did. Even the egg rolls and crab rangoons are to die for. It isn't very pricey, and you definitely get a lot of food. This place is so good, I can't even wait until lunch for the leftovers. I eat them for breakfast.

#12 Kang Kalee (potato curry) with tofu

I had my usual #12 Kang Kalee (potato curry) today (9-30-22) and I was so happy it was just as I remembered. A recent reviewer said they used crinkle cut fries instead of the usual cottage fries, but maybe that was a temporary supply chain issue, as today it was back to the cottage fries. I think this dish is the best on the menu!

This will be a short review. There's not much to say but ... I love this place. LOVE! It's not fancy. If you want a fancy space and fancy food go elsewhere. If you want good Thai food that you can adjust the spice level and have it actually be spicy this is your place. Everything I have had has been excellent. I first stopped here with my students on our team field trip. I honestly kind of rolled my eyes at the suggestion because students usually pick the worst places. One time a student suggested I go to Fuji Buffet and I ended up sick the rest of the evening... no need for details on that experience. Lol I'm glad I listened to my students at this time. Now this is my go to Thai place in the area. I like that it's a small unpretentious space. I even like the styrofoam plates your food comes on. My faves would be the crab Rangoon. It's the best. It really is so get it. The vegetable curry with chicken. The chicken wings. Any of their noodle dishes. Most people like threes company. Again, I've never had a bad dish here. They are fast and friendly. They probably make most of their money on take out because there are always people in and out of the place when I'm dining in. Just go. You won't be disappointed. promise. Let me know how it goes.

I'm really conflicted in deciding how to rate May's Bangkok Express. On one hand, as a value Thai food option in Ferndale, with (ridiculously) fast service and OK quality food, I want to rate it well. On the other hand, it's lacking in a lot of places and I can't in good conscience give it a 4-star review. If 3.5 stars was an option, I'd definitely rate this restaurant 3.5 stars. A friend and I recently stopped by the restaurant during the Ferndale DIY Street Fair. Because we were in a time crunch, we decided to try the restaurant as it was one of few joints that wasn't completely jam-packed with people. Once inside, I could tell precisely why more people aren't flocking to the restaurant. The interior is very dated, and works for the average person looking to get takeout, but is not exactly what the DIY Street Fair goer wants to experience on their Saturday night out. The menu itself is very simple and easy to navigate, you'll find all the standard Thai fare here. The most surprising (and perhaps most questionable) thing about the restaurant is how rapidly you recieve your food once you've ordered. From the moment we paid for our order to when our food was given to us, not 6 minutes could have passed. I remarked to my friend that most fast food restaurants are not this quick... Though this was a bit of a red-flag, we were on a schedule and gave the food a shot anyway. I'm not sure exactly how to describe the food, but overall the taste was fine. It seems as though the restaurant uses some ingredients that cause the food to taste good, though they may not be the healthiest. This is totally fine for cheap Thai food, but in the moment, it came across like they had cut some corners and bought the budget brand MSG or something, because the aftertaste was just a bit odd, and perhaps even fishy... In conclusion, I think I'll say that this restaurant is not a bad restaurant. That said there are plenty of other options in the area (including just across the street) where I think you'll find yourself much more satisfied for not much more money.

Pretty fast service and consistent with many Thai curries that I have tried in the past. Beware, they take their spice levels seriously!

I dropped by the day before Super Bowl Sunday. I hadn't been here in many moons. I sat in my car on a call and ordered my food through Door Dash for pickup. Let me tell you! The parking lot was jumping with cars going in and out! That is always a good sign! The restaurant no longer has a dine in option. They are strictly takeout. One former area with booths is blocked off with a table. Another area with booths appears to only serve for seating for customers while they wait for their order. Beyond the checkout area, two more tables block an area and serve to hold orders ready for pickup. I feel they need to place a curtain to block that dark open area from view with all the pile of boxes. I ordered the sesame chicken with plain fried rice plus a spring roll. The aroma in the car let me know it was going to be a good meal. The portions were great and enough for two meals. It was delicious! Fortune Cookie: "Supportive friends are coming your way." I skimmed the reviews and ordered something I…read moreusually wouldn't order but which most people seemed to like, General Paul's Chicken, which is apparently named for the late founder, and it was okay. Maybe 3.5 stars. The first bite had a sharp flavor note that I didn't care for, but it wasn't noticeable after that bite. The broccoli was fresh and had a decent texture. I almost ordered the Hong Kong Low Mein, but decided against it as the current price seemed high for noodles, but my partner ended up getting it and I am so glad I didn't order it. There is an absolute ton of it, but the oil is strange, the noodles are strange, and there aren't many things in it, just a gigantic heap of strangely greasy noodles. We also got Hot and Sour Soup which was more like a very thick Hot and Sweet Stew with corn(?) and a LOT of bamboo. It took lime juice and soy to be edible. I don't write reviews often, but this is the weirdest Chinese food I've ever eaten anywhere. Maybe it's the Hong Kong factor or maybe the family that inherited it just have their way of doing things. I would not order from this restaurant again. There's better delivery-grade Chinese to be had in Oak Park/Ferndale and beyond.
