Wanted to give this spot a chance as we live nearby. I skimmed the reviews and ordered something I usually wouldn't order but which most people seemed to like, General Paul's Chicken, which is apparently named for the late founder, and it was okay. Maybe 3.5 stars. The first bite had a sharp flavor note that I didn't care for, but it wasn't noticeable after that bite. The broccoli was fresh and had a decent texture. I almost ordered the Hong Kong Low Mein, but decided against it as the current price seemed high for noodles, but my partner ended up getting it and I am so glad I didn't order it. There is an absolute ton of it, but the oil is strange, the noodles are strange, and there aren't many things in it, just a gigantic heap of strangely greasy noodles. We also got Hot and Sour Soup which was more like a very thick Hot and Sweet Stew with corn(?) and a LOT of bamboo. It took lime juice and soy to be edible. I don't write reviews often, but this is the weirdest Chinese food I've ever eaten anywhere. Maybe it's the Hong Kong factor or maybe the family that inherited it just have their way of doing things. Favorite Chinese food in town. The sesame chicken is SO good. The chicken breading is always crispy. The vegetable lo-mein is hands down my favorite ever. I love that they are the skinny noodles and they are generous with their portions. read more

Almond chicken was flavor less and bland, the brown gravy was a generic canned sauce of some sort. Not a recommend. Hong Kong one has been a staple in Ferndale for years !!!!! I have been coming here since I was a kid. Shell, is super nice ! She is very accommodating to what I like. Sometimes I just like a vegetarian dish and they are willing to make what I ask! They are very reasonably priced and the food is great! They give you enough to have leftovers the next day. I've had nothing but good experiences while ordering from Hong Kong One. I usually get the garlic ribs with shrimp fried rice. I've also had the chicken and broccoli with shrimp fried rice. Food is always hot and delicious. The only one thing I don't like is the egg roll be drenched in the gravy and soggy. I put it in the air fryer, and it's good to go. I have not had any bad food from here, and I have not experienced any foul/bad smells either. Look: if you're looking for authentic Chinese food, this is *not* it. If you're looking for good Americanized Chinese food/takeout food, this is my choice for that. It can't be stated emphatically enough that I am *elated* that they're back after an absence of over a *YEAR* because of a fire that happened next door to them. It was a terribly long wait for them to return and bring with them their wonderful egg rolls and Gai Kow (with white sauce!). And back they are: the food I had when I ordered it is just as good as it used to be over a year ago. The egg rolls are still very crisp, and I haven't had better egg rolls in the area (though I'm always up for a new suggestion). Their Gai Kow (chicken with vegetables in a white sauce) is our go-to dish, and while it may not be everyone's favorite (it can be a bit on the bland side on occasion), we enjoy it quite a bit. It's really, truly good to have them back. It might not set your world on fire, and it IS NOT AUTHENTIC (it's the American Chinese version!), but we like it a lot for what it is. Welcome back, folks. This was some good Chinese food. Portions were large and we had leftovers for days - maybe we over ordered. But flavors were what you would expect from a fast food Chinese place. Was busy on a weeknight but we live close so did pickup. Would recommend for sure and you can't beat quick, local Chinese for dinner. read more

Great little family owned business tucked away in Ferndale. I recommend the General Paul's chicken! And ask them how it got that name... We also had the Lo Mein, Kung Pao chicken, Crab Rangoons, and Egg Rolls. All were delicious! The portions are huge too, you definitely get your money's worth here. I was on a service call close to here and decided to get a quick bite and they were quick. My son and I both ordered our go to favorite for Chinese the general TSO chicken extra spicy with the spicy Chinese mustard that they actually had . Many places always have the packet but the real thing is what this place had and the egg rolls were good if you like the little shrimp which we do but I know some people don't like fish so just a heads up. The General TSO was good also and had a good flavor. I haven't tried anything else there yet but I'll stop again. read more

I rode past Hong Kong and saw the $3.95 lunch special list. I figured I'll try it because I was in the mode for sesame chicken. I wish I would have followed my first mind & grabbed a bowl of soup. The sesame chicken looked along the lines of almond chicken in a pool of sweet & sour sauce (YES, I ordered sesame chicken). All the sesame chicken I have eaten had red colored sweet yet spicy sauce on it. This sauce was nowhere near right. The chicken was white meat I thought until I separated the soggy corn starched breading off of it and saw an unusual dark spot. On to the rice, well you pay $1 extra if you want anything besides the pork fried rice. I don't know who eats pork fried rice with chicken, which is probably how they make there money with a $1 up charge. I asked for veggie fried rice and it was covered in soy sauce, burnt (yes burnt) vegetables. The veggies (corn, peas, green beans) all looked like they came out of a bag of FROZEN Green Giant bag. I could have been okay if the rice was burnt. The egg rolls are the normal shrimp egg rolls (greasy as heck). Crab Rangoon (yes I had a craving for stuff)- weird to say the least. I have never seen crab rangoon that looks like a mini calzone (half moon shape). It was bland, no sweet taste anywhere. Not sure if it was the cream cheese or the seafood smell that hit me when I took my first bite. But it was not good. The vegetable soup is actually ok. It is a broth and has baby corn, mushrooms, bean sprouts, onions, bok choy, and carrots in it. The pint is worth the $1.35 they charge. I originally was going to order wonton soup, but the wontons have pork in them. I ended up tossing my lunch in the trash after a few bites because I couldn't stomach the lack of flavor in the sauce or the low budget meal. It is carryout only & I wasn't about to drive back there and waste more money in gas than a $10 refund. I guess I expected too much for a reasonably priced establishment. read more

Just started coming here a couple weeks ago and it's become my new favorite Chinese spot. not only do they have good deals but their food tastes great. But the only thing that bothers me is that the cashier always tries to charge me extra for things when I get there. She never says anything when I order the food over the phone that she's going to charge me extra until I get there. I have no problem paying whatever extra she wants to charge me but for a paying customer to come there and be told that they're going to be charged extra when I've ordered the same thing three times times in a row is irritating. read more

It's *huge*. The dinner combination came with a cup of gravy, about two cups of rice, two pieces of chicken that were as big as my hand, and an egg roll. The breading was a bit thick in places, but it was easy to remove the excess 2) The chicken lo mein dinner combination had a good amount of juicy chicken, tender crisp vegetables, well seasoned noodles, about two cups of rice, and an egg roll. 3) The crab rangoon was above average. There were about a dozen people picking up their food at the same time I was (it may have been the only restaurant open on this Monday Christmas in Ferndale), and everything was present, accounted for, and well executed. read more

I recently moved to Ferndale from East Lansing, where we have several good Asian options, but sadly I have yet to find someplace near my new home for decent Chinese food. The crab Rangoon was reminiscent of an unwashed two-bit hooker. Orange chicken is both bland and textureless. The beef with broccoli is halfway decent, but only compared to the other dishes, not compared to typical carry out Chinese in general. I'm kinda scared to even consider trying the egg drop... This place should be renamed to "The best damned chinese food in Ferndale" I seriously love the place. Their Vegetarian soup and Rice are both spot on. The Buddha meals are great for a striving beer drinking bachelor such as myself. It will generally feed one person twice for about $8 bucks. The staff has always been super friendly. Sure this is your run of the mill Americanized Chinese fare, but they do it right and they don't try to act like they are doing it any other way. I definitely recommend it if you just want quick carry out and often bring my friends here when we are indulging on some serious beer drinking and Madden Football sessions. read more

If you are in a hurry and want Chinese food that is served fast, tasty and inexpensive, then Hong Kong 1 is the place for you. The food is basic Americanized Chinese. They offer old school favorites, like almond boneless chicken and sweet and sour pork. My favorite combo is a small egg drop soup and a small pork fried rice -- nothing hits the spot better than this combo. Another of one my favorites is the 4 egg roll special for $ 2.00 (perhaps a bit more) -- a mini pig-out fest! Sometimes a man has to indulge his inner-porker. This is a take-out only restaurant. I love carryout Chinese food...nom nom nom I am very happy with this place. I call ahead and it is ready when I get there. I have ordered from there about 10 times so far...with many more to come !!!! Things I have had so far and liked are: Almond Chicken, Lemon Chicken, General Paul's Chicken, Pepper Steak, Gai Kow, and Szechuan Beef. The only one thing I ordered and not liked was Ribs with Garlic Sauce. The very best about this place, besides getting combo means for the 6 to 8 dollar range are the egg rolls. Really enjoyed the General Paul's chicken. After having some terrible terribly terrible food at Wing Hing, it's so easy to give this place 5 stars. I showed up 20 minutes late to get my food and it was still hot and fresh tasting. The egg roll was nothing out of this world, but it resembled and did everything you would expect it to. I certainly got 2 full meals out of the dinner combo. Good portion size and great flavor for under $10. I tried a bite of my friend's hunan beef which was also very tender and is something I would totally order. As of right now, this is my top chinese carryout pick of ferndale. Went back a week later and tried the Singapore Lo Mein. Delicious dish that included shrimp, chicken, and fresh vegetables held together with some curry seasoning. The quality seems consistant and I can't tell you how nice it is to have reliable Chinese after the experiences i've had at Wing Hing. This used to be my favorite Chinese carry out when I lived in Ferndale, I even went there for a few years after I moved. It was inconvenient but the food was worth it, at least for awhile. And then things went downhill. I got raw chicken TWICE and when I called to complain they said they'd give me a free meal the next time I was in. They didn't offer to deliver a replacement despite how dangerous raw chicken is. The overall disappointment in quality, safety and customer service made me stay away for good. A little disclaimer: Stuff has to be really bad for me to give a one star. I ordered a Hot and Sour soup (which I was excited for because it was a veg base) and a shrimp dish (Kung Pao). The kung pao was decent but lacked any spice or flavor whatsoever. The only good part (and usually my favorite part of) the dish was the peanuts, thats not saying much. But the soup? Oy! I imagine that the cook in the back said, "Oh noes! We've run out of Hot and Sour soup. But wait, lets just replace that soup with Sweet and Sour sauce." The soup had this consistency that was quite unappealing and tasted just like sweet and sour sauce. And for dessert, I had a nice sore stomach for the rest of the evening! I'm hoping that other dishes at this place are good, but truthfully, I will not be back to try them. I may have to stick with my favorites in the F. With a tag line "Where Livernois ends and Hong Kong Begins", how can you go wrong? Alright, so Hong Kong One is set in a strip mall on 9 mile right next to a dry cleaner. It is a take out only restaurant. No tables, just two benches and a crusty fish tank. The food itself is good comfort food. I put it under my "it's so bad it's good" umbrella. I got the veggie low mein and it was salty goodness not to mention piping hot! (heat not spice). I've been there three times and have only ordered the low mein. I'm a creature of habit when I find something I like. The veggies were a mix of fresh with the canned tiny corn on the cobb thrown in. The people who own the place are always nice and pleasant. Some of the worst Chinese food i have had. I have been trying to find good sesame chicken since China Ruby closed. This was terrible, little deep fried nuggets with some premade sauce that probably came from Gordon food service. i also ordered beef with pea pods, the peas were mush and it was covered in thick brown gravy.
