Alaysia was amazing. If you ask for a waitress please ask for her; she was friendly, approachable and knowledgeable of the menu. Hookah was made perfectly. Mozzarella sticks were definitely frozen, don't order. They have a "BYOB charge" which is new, because I came in January and I wasn't charged. Then they have automatic gratuity, which is trash because the waitress doesn't even get the full 20% tip. This place is terrible. Came here for a birthday. Bought my friends a Hookah. We ran out of cups and had to wait over 20 min for cups Then bought them one more Hookah and the waitress charged me for 3. I tried to tell her that I didn't order three but she was making a big scene and I didn't want my friend and his wife to feel uncomfortable so I just paid the tab. Went with some friends to Mazaj for my birthday. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to seat us anyway, which was great, but the service the whole night was awful. We ordered food and a hookah, but the wait staff was inattentive, to say the least. We couldn't find any booze on the menu, do they even serve cocktails here? And what was with all the teenagers? Looks like they were serving underaged kids! After they brought the hookah we were pretty much abandoned. We waited almost an hour for our food, and meanwhile the waiter (who kept coming over to say the food would be out any minute!) was smoking with other patrons and chatting with people outside. When the food finally came they forgot one of the items and then when we asked them for it they said, "Oh, you still want it?" SO rude! We confronted the guy who seemed to be in charge, and he would'nt comp any of our bill, saying there was nothing he could do for us. This is a chintzy hookah bar that doesn't want to work to keep its cutomers in the chairs. Definately will NOT recommend to anyone! Don't waste your money. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone! Mazaj is BYOB, but there is now a $3.50 charge for everyone in your party. It is written almost illegibly on the menu and they do not notify you of a charge until it shows up on the bill. On Friday, September 28, the waitress working was rude, seemed annoyed by our presence and did not tend our hookah properly as she kept adding more coals than was necessary to get us out faster. She moved us from our table before we could even consent to it when new customers came in. She even sat with some of her friends who were also there smoking. Before asking if we wanted anything else, she had the check on the table, with 2 $3.50 charges for "glasses" for the two people in my party. When I asked to speak to a manager about it, she initially said no one was there, and after a moment of thinking about it, brought over another young girl who essentially told us that there was nothing they could do about it. Neither of them was polite or apologetic in the least about the situation and you could tell that they could care less. To sum it up, Mazaj has terrible music, a ridiculous "drinking charge", is cramped, uncomfortable and had awful service. There is nothing about this establishment that I enjoyed. I won't go here ever again. A friend and I were walking back to my apartment from a show that ended early. We passed this place and thought, "Why not? Hookah sounds good right now." Dude. I could not get out of here fast enough. Our waitress or whatever was totally aloof and looked annoyed whenever we'd open our mouths. We ordered rose hookah, and while it was excellent, I couldn't enjoy it because top40 club crap was blasting throughout the entire place. I couldn't even say anything to my friend because we couldn't hear each other. We literally texted one another to communicate. This shouldn't happen when you're SITTING ACROSS FROM SOMEONE. After reading the previous reviews I had some hesitation to visit Mazaj Cafe. This place is in transition there are better reviews to follow mine. The waitress , Meg was so friendly and cheery ! She greeted us at the door quickly and serviced a pineapple head hookah. The music varied between modern and Arabic making the atmosphere very hoping !! Came out here on a slow Monday night for a friend's birthday. I would rate this a 3.5 stars if I could, I went with the 3stars for a few reasons: It's location is on Federal Hill-- it's a given you have to be inventive with parking. Especially on the weekends. Their menu is pretty limited. On their menu they have 3-4 dessert items, smoothies, coffee and other non-alcoholic drinks available. It is BYOB, which normally would be a major plus had they not added an extra charge for it. Despite it all that, I would go back for the main reason that the service was great and the hookah was good. The waitress was attentive, polite, friendly and engaging. She recommended some popular hookah flavors and they were very light and flavorful. We got the honeydew and the orange mint. Both were smooth and lasted really long. The waitress mentioned that it's because they use an orange half for the hookah to sit on. It makes it last longer then if it was in a ceramic tin (in most places). Which in my book, is a pretty awesome thing that they do here. Even though I was a little bummed that they didn't have a full menu, I tried their smoothies (the mixed berry to be precise) and it was delicious. All in all this place isn't half bad. So my four friends and I decided to go out one Saturday night and we decided to go to Mazaj. I've been to Mazaj before and one of my other friends have gone before and we didn't have any complaints. This time, we did and it has become the reason we will never return. First off, when we got there, we were told by one of the waitresses that they had no seats available and that it would be a 30 minute wait until we would get seated. One minute later, we were approached by a gentleman and he said "did she tell you we have no seats available?" We replied, "yes." And because it was 10 degrees outside, we decided to take a moment to think what to do. The gentleman then came up to us again and said "you guys can't stand here." Which is completely understandable. But the way he approached us, with a pompous attitude and no compassion for the fact that we are a bunch of girls about to be thrown into the freezing cold. But we left. Then we walked back to our cars and after 10 minutes, we decided we might as well wait the extra 20 minutes and try Mazaj again. Once we walked back to Mazaj, there were empty seats and we sat down. After getting the menus, we were ready to order our hookah. The gentleman who had told us to leave earlier was the one to approach us to take our hookah order. We ordered and got our hookahs relatively quick. Which was the only plus side to the entire night. After receiving our hookah, we only received help from the staff one other time. Our hookah needed more coals and the customers next to us (who I am guessing was friends with one of the employees), were the only ones helping us ash our coals. But didn't help much since we needed more coals to get a better pull. Later on the night, we are trying to have fun since everyone in there was zoning out or possibly falling aseep to their softly played music. So as my friends and I are singing along to the songs, the gentleman comes up to us and says we can have fun but we have to turn it down a bit. Now, I understand we were being a bit loud but we were paying customers and we were in a "night life" area. If we were in a library, I would have understood. Towards the end of the night, with only one time receiving new charcoals, we were ready for our check. The gentleman came to receive our hookahs and while doing so, he spilled a drink on my friend's foot. He looked at the cup that dropped and proceeded to pick up the hookah. My other friend told him he spilled the drink on her and that was when he decided to apologize. Which is completely rude and inconsiderate that he had to be reminded to apologize to a customer. We did leave a good tip to the waitress who did help us out throughout the night. So it's not like we were just completely ignorant and uneasy to please. Now I've been there before and I have had a conversation with the owners about hookah and etc. and they are completely nice and caring. And the gentleman who was there was not the owner. He was a younger gentleman who must have been covering for the owners and was riding on a high horse and on a power trip. My suggestion to the owners of Mazaj is to never take a day off and keep an eye on their employees so they don't end up displeasing other customers. read more

So I've been here four times and it's been great but I came in tonight and it was the worst. We spent and hour and a half trying to get our hookah to work and it was super shitty. The waitress kept offering to get us a new hookah but consistently put it off and kept changing our coals. Finally this young guy who seemed to be in charge came over and kept changing coals and when we asked for the replacement he said it was burnt and we would have to pay for a new one. The waitress, Gianna, was pretty nice but seemed confused about how to do her job. She also seemed more confused with flirting with the customers next to us. Let me just say the manager at this place has no morals. Our bill came we paid half cash and half credit card, we specifically ask for our change after leaving her well over 25% in tip. The hookah was clean and presentable, how ever the place is not! The waitress was nice but I felt like I was in someone's bedroom, and not a hookah bar. The Bathroom was clean, but I had to walk through the kitchen to get to it. The music was nice, and not too loud, so my friends and were able to chat. They had "MTVs 16 and pregnant" on t.v. as our waitress sat down and watched it (WEIRD??) I ordered tap water and they gave us bottled water instead. Their excuse was that they were a new business and there was something wrong with the tap (what?!!!?). These people are so lazy, save your money and aggravation. I can't believe this place is even running on Atwells Ave. I've never been to such a GHETTO establishment. Very expensive and unprofessional. If I could rate this establishment -1 stars I would. I am utterly disgusted and perplexed by my experience at this location tonight. 7 friends and I went to Mazaj after dinner in honor of my friend leaving to go back to Florida. Although it was busy, we got seating right away and the atmosphere was fine. We were off to a good start, the only thing that sucked was obnoxiously drunk girl behind us, but that's fine. We had been there for awhile, having fun, relaxing and spending some quality time. Our waitress comes over to change the coals on our hookah. We had 4 hookahs total. While changing the coals for the second Hookah, she drops one of the hot coals IN MY FRIENDS LAP. In between her thighs. Startled that she dropped it she jumps back causing sparks and more pieces of coal to shower my friend. "Get up! Get up!" She was yelling at my friend, whose trying to get up while her legs are being scalded. While the waitress is jumping back she hits the table and knocks two of the Hookahs over. Luckily the fell to a side where no one was sitting or it would have fell in their lap, however my friends at the end of the table now had to jump as coals and other objects are flying beside them. NOT ONE SORRY WAS SAID. A gentleman came and cleaned up the mess and then went over our options. A refill (to make up for the ones the incompetent worker knocked over) would be an additional ten dollars a piece. When we said that we didn't want to pay for a new one and that we just wanted what we had and she ruined he looked at us and said are you sure that's want happened? Condescendingly. WE WERE CHARGED FULL PRICE FOR ALL OF OUR HOOKAHS. NOT ONE "IM SORRY" WAS UTTERED. Great spot to have an inexpensive night out while still being out on the hill which can tend to get pricey. It's BYOB ( pay $5 per person in your section drinking , found this out after the fact when tab came) and hookah is nice and smooth. Many flavors as well just found it strange how their pricing and guest policy is. We were told if we got the "VIP" hookah we would've been able to have 3+ people on the same hookah once our 4th guest arrived we were told we had to get another hookah a standard $25 one which to me why didn't they just let me get 2 $25 hookahs if it was an issue for the third person. Paid $75 (VIP is $50) anyways still a good spot compared to other hookah bars. Good music and friendly staff. Owner is very attentive checks on you as well and fixes hookah if other staff is occupied. Will go back now that I am more informed of pricing and how they work with guest party size and hookahs. read more

Place used to be amazing and fun. They've done some renovating and have new rules. One hookah for every two people is a little excessive it used to be one hookah for every four people. They got a little profit happy the hookah isn't as strong either. I won't be going back here any time soon. read more

Wish I could give a 0 star review. I've gone to Mazaj multiple times throughout the years and it's gone downhill. I don't know if its the staff change or change of ownership but the new owner is a money hungry prick and has a ridiculous two person per hookah rule. There was a certain period I actually enjoyed the atmosphere and the waitresses but I no longer see any of my favorite waitresses there. My friends and I were stunned that the waitress with long hair and light eyes wasn't even paying attention to us and was too busy dancing to take care of our hookahs and bring us our checks. To top off the outrageous prices and the lack of good service, they seem to charge more than the prices on the menu which is false advertisement. Unbelievably RUDE!! Was out to celebrate my friend's birthday and there were 4 in our party, but two of us don't smoke. We enjoy the atmosphere and did purchase drink mixers but because we only had one hookah for the four of us, we were asked to leave. The manager even came by and threw the bill at us and told us to "just pay and leave". Never giving business to them again! There's so many other more quality establishments to go to and you shouldn't have to deal with the disrespect and unnecessary insolence. Came in last night with a group of 8 and were required to order at least 3 hookahs. The hookahs arrive and none of them were hitting correctly so during the course of our night we constantly had to bring the waitress over to try adjusting them, but it seemed like nothing really worked. The apple flavored hookah tasted like black licorice so we ended up switching that flavor out since it was unbearable. The waitress was doing her best to help and was very friendly the whole time which is why I even gave this place one star. read more

I've been here before and I had an excellent time! However, after tonight I proudly say I WILL NEVER go here again. Our server was completely aloof and really didn't care about us. After we ordered our hookah, we were pretty much on our own. It took her TWO HOURS to tap out our charcoal, by then we needed new charcoal but did she care, NOPE! My friends and I decided to bring our liquor since they don't have a strict policy. Boy was I wrong ! At the end of our visit, the server charged us for bringing in our own liquor. NO WHERE does it say that they will charge you on the menu, nor does the server mention it to you when she seats you. Utterly Ridiculous! Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

I've only ever had turkish coffee (in terms of their food), it took a while to prepare but it was worth the wait, especially because our hookahs came out so quickly. Mazaj is located in a great location which right in the middle of Federal Hill in providence. They have great music for people who are looking for a place to hang out with friends or alone. Never going back to this place again. Doesn't even deserve one star. Went on a Saturday night with a group of 7 and we were told the wait would be 20 minutes until they can get us a table which we were okay with. We waited outside (mind you it was about 20 degrees) for about 40 minutes when a group of 3 girls & 3 guys arrived and seemed to know the owner so he told them their wait would be 2 minutes. This place is just a hookah bar, not a club making the wait ridiculous but the fact that the owner allowed 6 people to get in before us who have been waiting was the cherry on top. We only went here because it's BYOB, nothing else is special about it. Once the group of 6 went in, we proceeded to walk in also because it was very unfair but when the owner realized we took it upon ourselves to get seated he began yelling in front of everyone and telling us to get out of his business. This is the worst hookah bar I've ever been to. The staff being the worst part. They started out by giving us the wrong flavor and not fixing it until she put her nose in it and smelt it. Can I give this zero stars? Been here in the past and had a decent time, tried again and was reminded why I won't be back. The waitresses only care about their regulars who give them all sorts of attention, and rip everyone else off. Instead of hanging all over men you should Be a little more professional and attentive to other paying customers. Had to ask for the same thing 3 times and the hookah was disgusting. there was no flavor and changing coals did not help at all. The waitress didn't deserve $1 and on the bottom of the bill tells you what an average tip would be and our waitress humiliated us and told us we need to pay the entire bill plus $10 gratitude. Im surprised at the ratings because I really enjoyed the hookah bar. I'm visiting family in Providence for the week of thanksgiving and had to escape them for a bit. I did some research and this hookah place is one of the cheapest around. When I arrived I thought the place was very cozy with couches all around.The music was good but not too loud. They said they didn't serve alcohol but they have a bring your own license which I never heard of before but I prefer it. I asked where I could get some which was just down the street so i picked up my own and came back. That might be one of my favorite parts about the place, it really kept the evening in my budget there was a charge though i think 3$ but I still saved a lot plus i sat there for like 2 hours. The hookah was good and lasted longer than mine at home they actually use fresh fruit instead of the normal head which is pretty cool. Overall I had a good experience... Wish I had a place like this closer to me. read more
