I have been coming for years and I'm always satisfied with my food, drinks, and the vibe of the restaurant. Great location toward the lower end of Federal hill. Service is efficient and my order is always correct. Lots of great dishes that come out hot and well put together. The food here is always so yummy! They make the guacamole right in front of you with all the ingredients you list. The staff here is always really nice, This is a really nice place for girls night out especially in the summertime. It is dimly lit and cute for a date, but always really crammed later at night so if you're looking for something quiet and intimate, I wouldn't really say this is the spot. I was excited to go! My empanadas were bland and not very crisp. My entree (Molcajete Azteca) was bland you would think as a $50 entree it would be seasoned or something but imagine fajita without sauce or seasoning- just fired, my friend's chimichanga burrito was only okay. I would have started to think I had a cold and couldn't taste anything but another friend had the lobster dish and that had pleasant seasoning and spice to it. But the food was quite a letdown after reading reviews. The best damn mango margarita I ever had though, I would return for drinks as long as we eat beforehand. If you want to enjoy good food and great drinks this is the place to go! Their frozen margaritas are awesome & BIG. I love that they make the fresh guacamole right in front of you at the table. I had the steak it was cooked perfect and yummy! My only complaint would be the servers take a long time to come back to your table to check on you but they do have bussers that will come and clean the table in between appetizers and meals. First impression was positive as one of the kitchen staff guys was outside when we pulled in and immediately pointed to us the last parking spot available on the lot. After that, the manager was happy to open up the patio for our party and turn some heaters for us - the restaurant was full inside and we had a dog with us. We were seated outside and received superb customer service. The only negative was the bar didn't know how to make a Whiskey Ginger. I was originally told they don't have ginger flavored whiskey. Then, after I explained that it's just whiskey mixed with ginger beer or ginger ale, the bar understood and made it well. For dinner, I had the Veggie Fajitas and my partner had Chicken & Shrimp Fajitas. We both enjoyed our meals very much. Entrees are served with a free bowl of chips and salsa (the salsa is spicy, but not overwhelmingly). The vegetables for the Veggie Fajitas were perfection. So we decided to give Don Jose another try after our 1 bad experience here several months ago! We had been coming here for years and always gave 5 stars prior to that visit! Glad we came back and gave them another chance! Still can't give them back their 5 stars, but I will give them 4. The food was tasty and service was good but the margaritas weren't great and the tableside guac wasn't as great as it used to be! It kind of lacked flavor. The only different entree we tried on this visit was the Pollo Al Chipotle which was a Chicken Breast sauteed with Portobella Mushrooms, White Wine, Chipotle and Cream Sauce sieved over rice with a side of beans. It was very flavorful! The other dishes were Combo Azteca (Cheese Chille Relleno, and a Chicken Enchilada with a red & green sauce and the last dish was a basic quesadilla. We will go back. I'm happy to report that there's so much more with the Mexican flavors of this cozy place. This was actually our second visit. We shared the paella dish and it was very good, but I wanted to come back and have a more authentic meal. Chips were thick and tasteless, Tostito's put them to shame. Salsa was mild but at least had flavor. For dinner we had the mocajete, steak fajitas and kid's beef tacos. The meat was good quality and juicy, but again, very bland. Rice and beans were inferior to what you get at the grocery store. Prices very high on pretty much everything except the fajitas. I was really impressed with the service here! When we first arrived we were greeted by a friendly hostess who sat us outside (in the back) in the perfect corner booth. There must have been some kind of festival going on up federal hill because it was packed up there- they even had outdoor tables in the front and side of the restaurant. The outdoor setup was adorable. They had a green astrotype turf underneath everything. They had a beautiful fire pit in the center. They also had umbrellas over the table, flowers, & beautiful lights. I loved the ambiance! The waitress was super nice. As was the manager - he came over to my table to specifically give my son some crayons to keep him busy! The table side guacamole service was pretty cool as well. My 4 year got the kids taco's and surprisingly ate them all . My friend got the carne asada and I got a chicken burrito- everything was delicious and the portion sizes were good as well. I've been here a number of times and it's never disappointed. I can't say enough good things about the food or the service. The food is delicious. On this particular visit, I got the enchiladas tapatias and it was delicious. My husband got a burrito and my friends got the traditional chicken enchiladas, tamales, and tortilla soup. Everyone all loved what they got. Also on this visit, we got fresh guacamole, which was made right at the table - it was delicious; the salsa that they brought to the table was also delicious and the chips were great - we even commented that we all love coming to Don Jose's because the chips are fresh friendly and crispy. Ordered delivery thru GrubHub, so my expectations were less than they'd normally be. Wasn't sure how the food would fare during travel. We were pleasantly surprised - thrilled, really, with the result. We shared an order of Nachos and they arrived dressed, but not soggy. The salsa was a bit spicy for my grandson, but I loved it. The toppings were generous with lots of melted cheese, beans, Guac and a sour cream drizzle. Delicious. The kid wanted tacos (the reason for ordering Mexican) and devoured three chicken soft tacos. He said they were good. I decided on the seafood soup, which was amazing. A nice spicy broth with squid rings, shrimp, mussels, clams and potatoes. There was a carrot or two, as well. I couldn't finish it so saved it for lunch the next day. Accompanying the meals, was a nice side of rice & beans. Also, a side of rice with half an avocado and a lovely mixture of fresh cilantro and chopped onions. Delicious! All things considered, this was a culinary experience we'd like to repeat. The manager comes up to us & asks us to move to a two seat table which is when we explained that we had a third person coming. The manager then says well you can sit at the bar since your party isn't here you shouldn't have been given a table. Sit at the bar & when the other person gets here we'll seat you. First of all, our third person was outside parking. You didn't bother to ask if it would be long you just told us to go sit at the bar. Second of all, you did it for a party of 5 that had just gotten in & mentioned you had a lot of reservations & were busy like that was our problem. We came in to have food. Went there last Saturday night. Had made a reservation for 7pm and they said no problem. We got there at 6:50 but we were told our table would have to wait for them to call us for our table. Waited around in their closet of a waiting room for an hour, until 7:50 to finally be sat. Oh it was very fresh, well plated, beautiful presentation - just all of it very bland. I got the individual nachos, (NACHOS MACHOS -Corn tortillas topped w/ refried beans, cheese, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, & chipotle. ) as my first course. It came out deconstructed but were fun to eat. However, the tortilla chips were too thick and hard to eat, the refried beans were obviously homemade, but had no flavor. I expected some salt, perhaps bacon or fat added to the beans, but no . It was awkward to eat and I just gave up. But there was cheese, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, guacamole, & chipotle. .I understand that if you want to make vegetarian refried beans, that's great, but then there are other seasoning to create a flavor level there. My friend had the SOPA DE TORTILLA - Rich Guajillo broth soup. Served with corn & tortilla chips and avocado. She said that was very tasty. For my 2nd course I had (CAMARONES AL MOJO DE AJO - Large shrimps sautéed w/ roasted garlic & tomatillo sauce. Served with rice & beans. Everything very fresh, big shrimp, ok sauce, beans bland and rice had no flavor. Tasted like white rice. My friend had the BURRITO - Stuffed w/ shredded y friend had chicken, rice, beans, cheese.
