My only thoughts that would keep people away are the prices and/or sometimes below average service experience. My go to is the lobster ravioli. Went here last night with my friend for dinner and it was the perfect girls night spot or even like a date night spot. The server was really kind and gave us recommendations. We shared the cheeseboard, the penne à la vodka, and the tiramisu. I unfortunately forgot to take a picture of the penne vodka, but it was delicious. The best part of the meal was the tiramisu because it was just the right amount of coffee in the cake and it wasn't overbearing or taking away from the flavor. I came here one time with 8 people, and the restaurant was perfect for a group dinner. I liked the dark, dimly lit ambiance of the place. I was not too impressed with the food, however. I ordered a margherita pizza which wasn't worth the price I paid for it--I've paid less for authentic Neapolitan pizzas. It was simply just a generic pizza with some basil on top (it tasted alright, it just wasn't worth it). I have visited Mazaro twice now, and each time I had a great experience. Full disclosure, both times were weekdays (Weds & Thurs) so I'm not sure what their weekends look like. The restaurant is lovely inside, lightly dimmed, not super loud where you can have a conversation without yelling over other patrons, and has plenty of nearby (street) parking and garage parking half a block away. The staff is so welcoming and attentive. We had the caprese salad, margarita pizza, lobster ravioli, and wine. Everything was delicious. I am so glad we were able to discover Mazaro in the Clarendon neighborhood. For some reason, we were never able to run into this amazing Italian restaurant in the area. All staff from the host to the servers were so kind and accommodating. For appetizers, we ordered the meatballs in tomato sauce and tuna tartare. The tuna tartare was outstanding, so fresh and delicious! The meatballs were also a good option. We loved the simplicity of their Margherita pizza,very very good (we even took some home). My personal favorite dish was the carbonara pasta with pork belly. It was creamy and savory. A perfect way to end our meal. I ended up using the sauce as a dipping sauce for the bread, so good! Food here is always delicious. I've been here several times and enjoy it. This last trip service was a little odd. With plenty of tables my wife and I had to assert ourselves to get a better table. I had the veal piccata while my wife had the eggplant parmigiana. As to the setting, it's nice enough for that someone special. You will have to find parking. Underwhelming and overpriced sums it up. $14 for an appetizer of TWO small meatballs. Two. Amatriciana sauce is one of my all time favorites. This was a sad version of the classic Italian sauce. Thin, lacking flavor, no spice, even the guanciale was flavorless. $26 and the portion was tiny. Tiramisu dessert was just a sugar bomb. No taste of espresso coffee. Such a solid restaurant. We aren't from the area but SO MANY locals came in and it was such a popular to-go place. Their starter bread was wonderful. Fluffy, soft, a sign of what was to come. Had their carbonara. They used a special pasta I hadn't had before but the sauce was great. The diavola is for our spicy lovers! It could have done with a bit less cheese but your taste buds will be on fire and you'll love it! Finished the night off with their mixed berry cake. If you love cheesecake and berries this is the perfect combo for you. Heard their lasagna and their vodka sauce is on point so we had an existential crisis figuring out what to order which is always a great sign when there are so many tasty options. It's such a cute place for a date. Highly recommend for that. We went at 5:30 on a Friday and there went many people but by the time we left it was packed so make a reservation. Mazaro's saved us during the epic storm that took out most of the neighborhoods power! So we saddled up at the bar and started to make our way through the menu. The cocktails were tasty but service was slow. I'm not sure if they were short staffed or if they aren't used to being a full capacity but hopefully it isn't a usual problem - this was a very unusual circumstance due to the storm. The fritto misto and the watermelon salads were excellent appetizers. The cacio e pepe was not good, I wouldn't recommend that. My husband got the chicken parm, the bite I tried was pretty good but not mind blowing. This might be a good place for cocktails/apps or happy hour. We showed up and had a reservation at 8pm. We did not get seated until 8:30pm. To make it "better" we were all given lemon drop shots while waiting (it had maybe a drop of alcohol, nothing). When we were finally seated, we told the waitress at the top of the night that we had a gluten intolerance in our group. When my friend ordered specifically gluten free pasta, she was served pasta with gluten. This is a serious disease and was absolutely unacceptable and unsafe. We got to send the food back luckily, but by the time it came we were all done eating, and her pasta was undercooked. Additionally, we order two appetizers, they didn't come until significantly after all our entrees. We had to ask multiple times for them to take this off our order, but they refused. After multiple attempts to fix this, we finally got them comped. When we ordered drinks, my friend didn't get her drink until 10 minutes after everyone else got theirs. Overall the staff were very difficult to work with and speak with them. The waitress ended up hiding from us and asked a different server to serve us, even though we were being very even tempered and reasonable with all our requests. Through all of this, the food was good (minus the gluten spike) and the ambiance was nice. Becuase of all these mistakes, multiple mistakes, I just cannot recommend coming here. We tried to be so patient, but I just cannot with this service. I think the servers name was Jasmine, but I'm not sure. Should out to the wonderful hostess though! She was great and very sweet. I went to this place with super high expectations, but left feeling disappointed. Whatever you do, avoid the pasta allo scoglio--it was the worst pasta I've ever had. The flavor was sour and off-putting, and the the pasta was way undercooked. My party agreed with me after trying it, so it wasn't just my taste buds. I ended up leaving the dish 80% full because I just couldn't continue eating it. If it wasn't for their buy 1 get 1 free deal I would have never tried this place. I consider this "boujee" pizza and I would never purchase a smaller style pizza with no toppings just for $18 haha but when it was two for one that's when I jumped on it. My partner and I were very satisfied and okay I'll give them their props with a 5 star but again, I would not come back unless there's a deal (I guess I'm cheap idk). FYI - Check in on Yelp to get 15% off your bill. For Arlington, Mazaro is a 5/5 in terms of convenience and taste, but overall a 4.5/5 that I'm OK bumping up to. I really wish they give out complementary bread here because I'm used to getting it at other Italian restaurants. Despite this, this was a great location to celebrate my friend's 26th birthday and we enjoyed our food. Overall, the waitstaff were great and helpful, food came out pretty quickly. SMOKED SALMONE BRUSCHETTA - 13 Since one order only comes with two pieces, I'd say it was probably not worth the price. I did enjoy the smoked salmon, the perfectly toasted baguette and the julienne red onions that gave it a tart sweetness. I'd recommend if you want to splurge, but maybe another appetizer would be better in terms of value. NORCINA - 24 So, I don't love sausages too much and asked to substitute it for chicken (no extra cost). Is that really norcina at that point...? Probably not... But anyway, lots of porcini mushrooms and black truffle in the pasta that gave every bite an earthy and deep flavor that I really loved. There's also a lot of meat and mushrooms, not a lot of Tagliatelle pasta, which I'm fine with. I prefer more "stuff" over more pasta. Anyway, I really liked this pasta as it was flavorful and enjoyable. Highly recommend it for those of you who love mushrooms and truffle! One of my friends got the PASTA ALLO SCOGLIO which was super delicious with lots of seafood. The sauce was a creamy lobster sauce that was rich in that seafoody-lobster taste ("seafood sweetness") that differentiated it from regular Alfredo or other cream sauces. Many clams included, with the perfect amount of pasta. Itself not a dish you'd take home, so the portion size is perfect. I really enjoyed my visit here. We got here just in time you beat the incoming crowd. We sat at their spacious bar and was immediately greeted by the bartender. I can't remember the name of the cocktails we had but It was similar to an Old Fash but used a different type of bitter that wasn't pleasing to the tongue. I just ended up getting a regular O.F. We ordered the lobster rav and seafood fettuccine but I substituted the noodles for gnocci. The Lobster Rav was good, nice light sauce but the gnocci stole the show. The lobster ravioli was a generous portion and had delicious sauce. Definitely the favorite of the night. The other food items were really disappointing. The avocado bruschetta didn't match the description at all. It was more of standard avocado toast, which isn't what i'm looking for when ordering bruschetta. The risotto a la crema al scampi was inedible. The risotto was mushy and the cheese tasted like Kraft, something you'd find in store brought easy mac. Since the dish wasn't satisfactory we ordered bread as a side. The bread was a pita style bread with zero flavor. Came here for a date night on the patio and was delighted with the menu, service and tastiness of the dishes we tried. I'm always looking to order things that are hard or impossible for me to replicate at home so had to try their beef Wellington. WOW what an amazing portion and cooked to medium rare perfection. So tasty that I had every intention of bringing home leftovers and had none to speak for! So if you are wondering what to order, here are some good ones: - Pasta Allo Scoglio - filled with delicious seafood and the creamy lobster sauce is phenomenal. Definitely worth it in my opinion. Probably my #1 recommendation on their current menu. - Linguine Clams - also love this one too, great taste, can't go wrong! - Bosciola al pesto - fiancé thoroughly enjoyed it! This one has the green fettuccine, with mushrooms, sausage, green peas, and pesto. - Baked Gnocchi- fiancé loved this one! He said that it reminds him of a delicious lasagna but it has gnocchi in it! He's a big gnocchi fan. - Carbonara Alla Romana - my dad ordered this and he said it was really good! It looked good!! It has smoked pork belly in pecorino cheese sauce. I might try this next time. One thing we wouldn't recommend, just not to our liking, is the lobster ravioli... it's just ok. However a lot of the dishes I've had here have been fantastic!! We all split the Capellini Al Pormedoro which was basically Angel hair pasta with tomato sauce and was divine. The calamari i thought was just okay, probably would not get again. Pretty disappointing experience all around. The place was empty so there was no excuse for the waiter's inattentiveness or the blandness of the meals. We were a party of 6 for lunch at noon on Easter Sunday. The restaurant was empty with only one other table seated for service. The waiter brought us water and took our orders but never asked us what we'd like to drink aside from water. Everyone's food came out but my husband's was came out as Cacio & Pepe despite asking about the fish special which was Mahi Mahi, after having had a conversation about the special a few minutes earlier - apparently "the fish special" sounded like Cacio & Pepe ‍ 2 in our party ordered the grilled Caesar salad, one with chicken, the other with shrimp. Despite the cost, the salad came out as a small side salad - a half of a chicken breast on one and 5 small shrimp on the other. Also, the romaine was not grilled as advertised. I order the Veal Marsala which left me questioning what I actually got. Marsala doesn't have tomato sauce in it but this certainly did. The portion of the veal was large but tough - I only ate half, and there weren't many mushrooms, maybe 3 total chopped in a few pieces. 2 in our party ordered pizza which they both said was tasty so they lucked out. We also ordered a side of fries, which everyone agreed were good because of their crispy coating. The fish special came out as everyone else was finishing their meal. The fish was bland and the accompanying potatoes slightly undercooked - since the kitchen was probably stressing to rush his correct meal out. The waiter never once came to check on us and I'm assuming the manager was not made aware of the mistake but considering how empty the place was, all they had to do was question the staff as to why one person didn't have a meal.
