I am fond of saying you can tell the quality of a company by how they respond when things go wrong. tl:dr; in the case of MC, the answer is not at all. Here are all the things that have gone wrong: I discovered the hardware they used for my lighting and my sprinkler were the base models, despite paying top doller. The owner lied on google maps claiming they put in a higher system. I posted pictures of the base models. No reply. I had to buy after market not so great adapters to get smart access to my lights and sprinklers. They put a chip in my pony wall while installing (years ago) and promised to come back to fix it. They never did. I recently found out from a neighbor who sees a part of my yard I normally don't that I have a sprinkler that is just pouring onto the walkway. That was a few days ago and I haven't had time to look at it. A good company would come out and fix it for me. Given how they haven't fixed anything else yet, I'll have to fix this myself or pay a reputable company to take a look. Half of my lights don't work. Again, I have zero hope that they will repair the lights. I had to replace nearly every plant they chose because it either didn't match my plans or because they weren't suited to the climate here and didn't survive (lest you blame me, every plant I chose to replace it with is thriving. How do you choose plants that can't survive in a region where everything survives?) The owner said on my google review that he had tried to reach me "several times" and I told him not to call.... I have been begging for them to make these things right for years.. I have had no calls. I figured out he was probably calling the wrong number and the person kept telling them that and finally said to stop calling. I sure as hell didn't say it. I would still like them to come fix the pony wall, the lighting, and the sprinklers, and make it right that I paid thousands for plants that had to be replaced within a year. Instead, they are resting on their mostly high reviews figuring mine will get buried and no one will care. Which is why I'm on yelp now as well as google. Here's what you can learn from the reviews. When things go right, MC is great. I do love the layout they created and the work by the actual workers. They were diligent and hard working. The price was high but fair given the amount of curved pavers I had in the plans, it seemed reasonable. (This is assuming there weren't so many problems.) But if you have an issue with them, good luck. Years of me leaving voicemails and reaching out to no avail. They knew about the pony wall before they even finished the project. There is ZERO excuse for not fixing that before they were done. Now years later, any work won't match well. I'm just livid at this company. 75 grand and this is how I've been treated. I hired MC Landscaping for a $25,000 project earlier this year. From the start, I was assured the sod would be cared for and covered by a warranty. Since installation, large areas of the lawn have failed to take, and we've had ongoing sprinkler problems. Despite multiple calls and texts over more than four months, I've received little to no response and no resolution. The warranty promises have not been honored. Additionally, there's drip hoses showing, wiring to the lights showing, and the mulch was is too thin. I also attempted to move forward with additional paid work. MC Landscaping told me they would prepare a plan, asked me to wait three weeks, and then told me I needed to create my own plan. After that, communication essentially stopped. Being ignored when I'm trying to pay for more work says a lot. Between the poor results, inconsistent communication, and lack of accountability, this has been a disappointing and expensive experience. Several of my neighbors have reported similar issues with MC Landscaping's responsiveness and quality. Leo was my PM while I was the client / designer. I first came to MC Landscaping (MCL) with a prior bad experience with another landscaping company that had baked their proposal numbers and were over estimating by a considerable amount. MCL numbers were competitive and they were highly professional. The design included high levels of aesthetic details developed from a history of working on 5 star hotel designs in UK/USA/China to LED lighting details that would truly bring the design to life. MCL aren't your average run of the mill landscapers as they will bring in specialists if they need to figure out a design problem which I was glad to see as a construction PM and owner. Pedro, Arturo & Gorge where the three main guys onsite and were always polite and cleaned up after themselves every day. As clients you should remember these guys are out in the heat working away on your dream landscapes so treat them well! Its also the clients responsibility to a degree to understand the design and be onsite to verify any questions. If an MCL PM has to text you pictures and drawings to get an answer to their question....its quicker in person. As a construction PM and client I learnt alot and for quality control it's best to review work daily to ensure your design is what you want rather than viewing at the end of a project and realizing you should have spoken up earlier. As for plants my initial selection was a carry over from my first landscaper consultant who had packed 1 plant every 1 ft. MCL advised against this and a week before we planted, I revised the entire planting species list with MCL's knowledge at their nursery. I would highly advise all MCL customers to sit down a week before to absolutely confirm plant species because loading all these plants takes considerable time and effort. I hired MC Landscaping for a small backyard project that involved fixing an irrigation problem, replacing sprinklers with a drip system then replanting. It took multiple tries but the company was always responsive to my requests. The crew came over two months repairing the system which eventually got fixed (it was a perplexing problem). They replaced a dying bush and brought in more mulch. The problem seems to be fixed now. The four star rating is only because it took so long and sometimes it was hard to get the crew to come but if you are persistent, it will happen. When I requested an irrigation quote, he wanted to charge me just to give an estimate, then later brushed me off with "I don't have X-ray vision." Annual Update to our project performed by MC Landscape: We've had quite a few plants die due to poor ground prep done by MC Landscape. I've talked to a few landscape experts who have confirmed that the area wasn't prepped properly prior to laying down the new mulch and plants. Also, be ware if this company's buisiness practices. I've talked to a few people in the local industry that have told me Marcus has stolen their designs. In addition, the mulch he'll charge you $1500 for is free product they get. The owner is still claiming that the plants are dead due to a lack of water. This is laughable. How I can make it clear that the plants are NOT DEAD DUE TO LACK OF WATERING? Marcus refers to 2 occasions when the water was turned off. I only know of 1. The 1st instance he relates is quite possibly when their electrician couldn't finish the job and came back another day. It was left plugged in through an extension cord that ran from inside our house and out our front door's mail slot. Somewhere along the way, it got reset. This was communicated to the team. I just now went through my fiance's messages and saw this. So, the water was possibly off, but not long enough to kill any plants. If their electrician had finished the job without leaving it hanging and coming back, this wouldn't have happened. Actually, at first, we were very concerned they weren't getting enough water and were also watering them by hand as well. He would stand out there for over an hour, watering everything. The "2nd time" the water was off, as stated before, it was for less than 24 hours. We turned it off because it was programmed incorrectly by their workers and was watering every single day. The system is not even supposed to water every day, so hours shouldn't have mattered. AND, as stated before, THEIR WORKER exclaimed that the ground WAS STILL WET. If anything, the plants were getting too much water, which Marcus said would harm the plants and to stop supplemental watering. So repeatedly telling us and the Yelp community that they died from thirst is almost-rage inducing. I have screenshots of text messages from as early as September, which went unanswered, about dead plants. It was a constant issue that was not being addressed, so they didn't magically die all of a sudden, and we didn't kill them by turning off any water. That is literally incorrect and completely false. It is insulting that I am essentially being called a liar when I state that the plants were being watered. It is insulting to be told that we killed the plants by withholding water from them and to have my integrity challenged. I do not know what happened to the 19 plants allegedly purchased (last time he claimed 14, plus from what I understand he owns the nursery) but I have counted the replacements on multiple occasions and have come up mighty short of that number every time. Moreover, there is still one completely dead and missing plant from the first month (pictures were sent and it was pointed out in person, even by me) that was never replaced. Furthermore, we weren't even complaining about the replacements that were made. Those are thriving, so we did not kill them (WE did not kill ANY of them). We've been upset about the ones that were never replaced the first time. I was actually the person who first contacted this company for the estimate. At that point they had my phone number and email. I passed the honor to my fiance, because I was 8 months pregnant, recovering from a c-section, then, well, new baby and a toddler. I have been sent 8 emails from them between May and November. On 11/9 I sent out an email asking what exactly was happening with the dead plants, as things did not seem to be progressing with my fiance. I got no response. I'm not sure how it can be said that they do not have my contact information. What is true is that my fiance has not been overly responsive, since Sheryl would leave a text on "read" for a month with no reply. We had to hound this company and its workers for replacement plants for months, only to be told that we were responsible for killing them and were out of luck! Lol. I will call Marcus and have a chat. Maybe we'll have a laugh. Maybe we won't. Maybe he'll read this update and decide he's done with this project for good, or maybe he'll tell me on the phone that I killed the plants and I'll completely lose my sh!t. Honestly, I did not know that turning off the water would void the contract. That's my fault for not reading it. However, as I said, it was being overwatered due to their mistake, it was off for less than 24 hours, and NO PLANTS WERE KILLED DUE TO LACK OF WATER (unless they incorrectly placed the tubing), because the plants were being WATERED EVERY SINGLE DAY. At the end of the day, if the contract was deemed void because of this technicality, then at least that's that. That sucks, and it is what it is, though I think it's bad business. However, I will not be told that I killed these plants, because it was a CONSTANT source of anxiety and stress for me, worrying about keeping them alive, worrying if they were going to get replaced, & worrying that the systems were working correctly. Also, we were never told the DG was the wrong material. We were told it was fine, and we had to fight to add a firming agent. It's still like sand, but better than the original, which isn't saying much. If we had known it was the wrong material, we would have asked it be redone. What a nightmare. read more

They have no issues making promises, continuously breaking them and then gaslighting you into thinking they are performing the services and taking your money. - I am still trying to wrap my head around giving a company a final chance to perform work that they have A. Already charged me for B. Admitted that they didn't do and C. Adamantly promise they will perform the next day and (either out of spite or incompetence) still cannot follow through with it. I am truly at a loss. Long Version: Firstly, I want to say that the work by the actual maintenance workers was fine. So this is not a reflection of their work, but how the business is run and managed. This mainly stems from their system of charging you in advance for the work each month, and no specific dates are provided on the bill so you have to trust that they will show up and perform the work without any indication of when it will happen. I first solicited work from this company early in the year for a couple projects (gravel work, trimming and removing trees etc.). The work was expensive, but it was done well. I then decided to have them do ongoing maintenance, servicing my yard twice a month and this is where things went rapidly downhill. At first, the work was being done and the crew would show at a regular interval. Then the "rainy" season hit around March/April and there were several miscommunications on the companies side about canceling and rescheduling work (continuously postponed, no exact dates provided, just vague assurances). I finally received an email reply in April regarding a "make up" of the work and I asked for more notification moving forward if there was going to be zero or incomplete service for the month (especially since I had already paid for it). About a couple months later, I noticed that the gardeners were not showing up twice a month. I work from home and am here quite frequently (I know, I have no life) and I would see them once a month at the most. I contacted the company again and Anthony assured my that the work was being done and that I must have been missing it and he doubled down on a promise that they would be there regularly. At this point, the ownership of the scheduling and crew organization was swapped over to Cody. I contacted Cody initially to bring up my concerns and he outlined that the crew was assigned to me on Wednesdays. I brought up that I did not see the crew coming twice a month, but he "looked into the dates in the system" and called out dates they were there, so I took him at his word (ignoring my own memory and recall). That brings us to this month, December. I noticed that, once again, the crew had not shown up to do any maintenance and contacted Cody on the 20th asking about service. He said that he "saw the dates in the system" again, but this time confessed that they did not show up on the first scheduled date (December 6th) without any explanation and that this was "the first time he was hearing about it" (?!) and while the maintenance for that day (the 20th) was rescheduled due to rain, the crew would definitely be coming on the 22nd. I expressed my disappointment and flat out said that this was a last chance after the runaround they had been giving me for months to perform the services. So yesterday, the 22nd rolls around and no crew shows up, no communication is sent and no explanation is given. So, to sum up, this company has no issues charging you in advance for services that they do not provide. In order to ensure services or a refund, it is on the owner to follow up repeatedly to make sure that that work is being done or the money is being refunded. Their system is either faulty, poorly managed or both. They also have no issues making promises, continuously breaking them and then gaslighting you into thinking they are performing work and taking your money. A completely new driveway, a low-water parkway, all new drought-tolerant plants in the flowerbeds, new sprinklers and a drip system with RainBird controller, and a Marathon Sod front lawn. Marcus was very good about helping us explore our options in the planning stages, and up front about the 5-week wait to start the project. There was some additional delay due to bad weather, but then they came with an army and work progressed quickly. The whole project was completed in a week. The process and landscaping project were smooth and efficient from start to finish, and everyone was friendly, professional, patient, and willing to adjust to my last-minute requests (which were many). This project was for the courtyard of a condo building and a sliver of a front yard running along a city sidewalk, where we wanted to deter neighborhood dogs from doing their business. The grounds within the courtyard had multiple challenges, such as receiving little sun and an abundance of roots from trees and well-established bushes; grass and sun-loving plants were out of the question, so we needed imaginative ideas, which MC delivered. In addition, we were on a budget, and MC Landscaping did everything possible to accommodate our needs and make suggestions; they were generous with us, for which we are grateful. They erected a small stone wall to create a barrier between pedestrians and their dogs and our property in front of our building. The wall is stunning. They laid a beautiful stone gravel interspersed with plants between the wall and our building. We've received numerous compliments from passersby. The quality of work - from their guidance, to removing an ancient non-working irrigation system and replacing it with a new one, to running irrigation to a hard-to-reach place, to being mindful of our delicate olive tree's massive roots, to working with our budget and making our former dismal landscape into a haven where we want to spend time - is priceless. I love the finished work on my drought-tolerant project. The yard is small, so there was limited space to work with and they made the best of the space and listened to my feedback as we went through the process. I'd have given 5 Stars but there were some glitches that added time to the project, but between COVID and the holidays, I don't believe that's "typical" for what seemed to me to be a responsive team. The gentleman on site when it was time to actually do the project (and the team who came back to make some needed changes and fixes) were friendly and helpful. Finally was able to get my husband to agree to redoing the backyard. We had all stone in our backyard and had over 8 trees. The tree roots uprooted the ground making the stones stick up all over the place. Since we have a toddler we decided on grass and removing two trees to open it up. Removing all stones, hauling away stones, removing two mature trees, leveling the ground, installing sprinkler system, and laying down new grass. It took three days to do most of it and once the grass arrived a week later they finished laying it down in half a day. They arrived on time which I greatly appreciate. They communicated well throughout the process and let us know when something came up and what the options were. We didn't touch the flower beds along our wall because we couldn't think of what we wanted, but once we do we'll be contacting MC again. read more

Initial installation of landscaping was very good. We agreed to continue maintenance with this company at a very high price which we thought would be worth it but gardeners did minimal work basically mow lawn and edge. For several months before we cancelled their high priced maintenance I kept telling them the grass was browning in a specific area, no response. Finally someone came to check and added watering time, also a sprinkler head spraying mostly towards planter area instead of grass was supposed to be replaced: never done. Also front yard ground cover dying in certain areas, no response. My lemon & lime trees getting fungus but told I had to spray a fungicide, not them. 2 bushes in front yard dying: now dead. Was initially told would be replaced: never done. I got nothing but lip service from maintenance managers that kept being replaced and not any of them ever fixed issues. I had to ask them to trim trees, maintain trellis to keep bushes spreading evenly and weed. This was rarely done and I had to start pulling out weeds and keep winding the night blooming jasmine on the trellis. I finally cancelled the maintenance but the sprinkler head not spraying correctly never replaced and dead bushes never replaced. I definitely would never recommend their maintenance service. read more

I recently had a home project done by MC Landscaping. I had walked by one of their lawn care crews in the neighborhood a few weeks ago and was impressed with their courtesy and friendliness. I took down the contact info and visited their website. The reviews were excellent and they stated "no job too small". My project was relatively small so I decided to test their promise. My first few encounters were with ERIC who was terrific! He was helpful, responsive and proactive. I was impressed. Next I met with JOSH to determine the "what and how much" for my job. He was open to questions and had a variety of suggestions to help guide me to my final decision. He had my estimate to me the next day. He remained active and involved with my project. My next step was with LEO and one of his crews for a job walk/project start. (Typically 2 steps, but we combined.) As had become the standard, the customer service and concern was stellar! Leo was always reachable for clarification and help when needed and the CREW was diligent, highly skilled and a pleasure to have at my home. A positive experience from beginning to end. read more

Excellent company. We started with Amber who designed our yard and consulted with my wife to select the plants and trees. She was awesome to work with and really knows her business. Leo was our Project Manager and he is a pleasure to work with as well as doing a great job leading his hard working team. You can tell he cares about his company and wants you to be 100% satisfied with their work. He is an excellent communicator and listens to his customers. It was a pretty big job and there were a few things that they needed to follow up on. Leo and his team were right on it and took care of these immediately leaving us feeling good about the entire job from start to finish. We have decided to use MC for all of yard and garden maintenance. They have done an excellent job so far. As a side note we had a water pipe break in the front yard while we were on vacation. Anthony and his guys took care of it for a very fair price and with short notice. We will be doing our front yard soon and will definitely go with MC Landscaping again. They are nice people, hard workers, and produce terrific results. read more

We were under a deadline to finish construction and Marcus was able to accommodate our schedule. They installed turf, DG, lights and beautiful flowering plants to completely reimagine our yard. After working with MC Landscaping on a variety of projects over the past few months in my new home, I can safely say they have little to no interest in earning your business or trying to do good work for you once they have it. Because I've done several projects with them (house clean up, irrigation repair, plantings, bi-weekly service) I will split the review up into several topics. Communication - MC Landscaping is one of the worst companies I have communicated with, both personally and professionally. I am currently in week 4 of communicating with their staff about why the plants I spent hundreds of dollars on that they installed and should be taking care of in the bi-weekly service are dying, and am constantly begging for responses and given promises that someone will get back to me. This same behavior happened when I first contracted them for irrigation/clean ups and had to ask multiple times for follow-ups, when they wouldn't finish work and had to get them to return, or ask why they never showed up in the first place. Phone, text, email, etc. were all poor across multiple employees, suggesting it's typical for the company's culture. Work Quality - For the price you would hope you are getting great work, but I've constantly been disappointed in what I've seen. In addition to the plants dying mentioned above, during the yard cleanup the team cut the irrigation lines throughout my yard and lied to my face that the reason they were leaking was due to them being old. Had never had an issue previously, but it was only after several members were using power tools/weed whackers indiscriminately throughout the project. Never saying sorry, they quoted me $3k to repair the lines they cut. I've also had to call the team to return to weed the yard - not for small ones but for massive weeds that they were just too lazy to pull. They've also let large portions of my landscaping die, chopped it to pieces, and never once communicated that there are any issues - which would have been extremely easy since I work at home and can come to the door. There is supposed to be a supervisor that comes out regularly to discuss your yard, but never once has that happened in 6 months. I am out thousands of dollars at this point due to their low quality work and hope that others can avoid a similar situation. Pricing - It's high. They consistently have some of the highest prices for the services despite low quality work. For multiple projects I would be quoted that a job would take 4 hours only for the team to show up for 1.5 and then leave - but still getting charged for the full time. I understand how hours are charged and it is not just the time working, but it was egregious to the point where I would be quoted a cost and find I could end up doing it in half the time with manual tools. They do have a really nice billing system that processes your payment/reminds you to pay right away, so while it can take weeks to get responses for your work they will get your money instantly. I know the owner of the company read these reviews and I hope they look to make changes ASAP. I am happy to chat about the issues and share feedback if there is an interest in improving. read more
