Had a free HVAC check done with them. They left the gas off to our heater and the union loose. Apparently, if they had left the gas on, and we had turned our heat on....a serious house fire would have resulted. Thank God we are alive and only had to pay a service fee and a half hour of work for a different company to fix it. read more

I was using McCarthy's for some years until I was told by two different techs that I had carbon monoxide & a big hole in my heat chamber. I was told a new furnace would be around $10,000.00, I told them to leave. I've had three other reputable company's come check my furnace out & neither one detected carbon monoxide or did I have a hole in my heat chamber. Now they keep bothering me with text messages, & yes I block every number they use to contact me. read more

My furnace went out on New Year's Day. I have been a member of McCarthy's Club for many years. When I called I was told they were not taking calls that day. I found another company that was able to help me. If McCarthy's wants to give all their employees the day off that is OK; however, they should offer information about who is available for emergencies. Next time I pay for the Club, I will look for other companies. I made an appointment 2 weeks ago on line for a furnace/air conditioner check up (part of my expensive club plan) and got a reminder email. Today came and no one showed up. Very poor communication and service. I will not use them again. I have been a loyal customer for many years and the company has really gone downhill. What a shame. I called the plumbing division for a small problem a couple of weeks ago. The guy that came didn't know what to do (toilet handle broken). He tried to talk me into a several hundred dollar new toilet. I called my handyman and he fixed it for $40. I am so angry and disappointed. They say they are open until 5. I called at 4:30 and an answering service said it is after hours and leave a message. read more

We have been long time customers & can't say enough how great their service is! They clearly explain in terms we can understand what maintenance needs to be done. Any repairs needing to be done are completed quickly & in the most economical way. As club members we are called twice a year to schedule our furnace & AC check & receive priority service/discount on repairs. A heat pump installed by them was replaced at no charge to us when it malfunctioned due to a problem with the manufacturer. The service techs respect our home & are very personable. We highly recommend this company! Recently I called at 7AM when our heat wasn't working on a sub zero day. A technician was here by 8:30AM. A great perk of being a Club member! read more

This is one place I would NEVER recommend. Over-priced services with appliances at about a million percent markup. They knowingly placed an air filter on or house that generates ozone-- a known lung irritant. I have asthma and it caused me severe problems until we figured out what it was and had it taken out. I don't feel that this company handles itself with integrity and also am not impressed by the "meh, just ok" customer service or the response time by management to serious issues related to the performance of the pieces they install. I've seen bad services in my life but this was the worst so far! 1. I have a membership(annual service or whatever it's called) with them since last year. Since spring I tried to reach them at least 3 times but I couldn't!!! Finally I reached them when the called us last week to remind us to renew the membership (although this membership was zero benefit for us! They didn't visit us even once before that phone call). 2. As I understood when I paid for the membership, They will visit me twice a year for AC/Furnace checkup. But when I asked for an appointment for the service they said that my membership will end before the time they usually start checking up the heater. So I end up with one service (AC check up) 3. The technician visited us two days ago. He did check the AC. It was not a bad service but yet not that good. Anyway, he mentioned that some small part in the Condenser is not working perfectly and it is better to be replaced soon. I did understood his concern but decided not to change it at that time. Later I looked for that part online and I think it is for maximum $30 but he wanted to sell it for $160?! 4. He mentioned that he will be sending a report email but till now I've received nothing. 5. Since he left, The AC stopped working!!! The temperature is not going down and because the weather was cool I didn't notice until the next night. 6. The customer service representative called me the next morning and instead of apologizing about what happened and the bad night I had because of this (I'm sick and I can't stand overheating and sweating) she started talking about how the technician had a number of concerns and that I refused to change or do anything about it!!!!!!!!! Like A NUMBER!!!!!!!! I know that it is about that one part he mentioned and I'm pretty sure this is the problem! I don't know why it stopped working after your technician visit! ( BTW I'm an Engineer, and I'm saying that to give you an idea that I have at least an idea about how this kind of things works) And then instead of apologizing again about this bad service she said that I'm coming to them with an AGENDA!!!!!!! How rude!!!!! 7. They send a technician finally. He found out the part betwee the is melting down!!!! And now I need a technician to check the wires and then I need to buy parts for $500!!!!! And this happened because the "overload" or "over using". Like which kind of using? The past two days (after the technician check up) the weather was cool and we didn't turn it on till yesterday evening when it didn't work!!!!!! So when and why did this part melt!!!! The funny part here is when he said "I came back to diagnose a problem with your AC and usually you need to buy for my visit, but it is OK I will not ask you to pay?!". Thank you though what a great thing to do after all! So now after the technician check up my used to work fine AC. I end up paying almost $1000 !!!!! I wish I've never asked them for the checkup. I've visited a number of countries in my life in fact and US was the best in customer service till this!!!!! I know mistakes happened. I do understand things might go wrong. But this was rude and unacceptable. I'm not happy at all with the service. Never going back to them and never advising anyone to use the services. read more

When we bought our house last year, we knew that we were going to need a new HVAC unit this summer. We did not anticipate that the dated unit to not even turn on once it got hot out. We made arrangements for two different HVAC companies to come out and give us estimates. The first company came out and it was purely a sales pitch filled with glossy brochures. McCarthy's representative, Tim, came out and filled in a lot of missing information that we did not get from the other company. For example, he asked me if he could measure all of the windows and doors. I must have made a confused face because he asked me if the other company measured. I told him that they did not, instead the representative just asked for the approximate square footage of the house. He review the quote that we received from the other company and determined that they were trying to sell us a 3.5 ton unit when, after accurate measuring, Tim advised us that we needed a 2.5 ton unit. He also broke down the difference between single and double stage compressor, as well as the pros and cons to both compressors. We had a complete HVAC unit put in last Friday by McCarthy's One Hour and are completely satisfied. Dylan and Nick did an amazing job! From putting on and removing the red shoe covers every time they entered and exited the home, to poor Nick being stuck in the attic so they could run new returns in two of the bedrooms. They were at our house until well after 5:30 p.m. on a Friday and neither of the installers were even fazed that they were working after 5:00 p.m. on a Friday. At the conclusion of the install, Dylan took the time to go over the new system, including how the unit will function and a detailed tutorial of operating the thermostat (which, by the way, is super awesome). I cannot recommend McCarthy's enough. I was trying to attach the before and after picture to this post, but apparently Yelp does not provide that option. read more

McCarthy told me my heat exchanger at my home was cracked & I needed a new furnace. I called another company for a comparison bid. The new company told me heat exchangers have a 10 year warranty and replaced it for $4000 less than McCarthy's either uneducated or unethical bid for a new furnace. Weeks later at my office, the rooftop unit wouldn't keep up with the thermostat setting so I called McCarthy again (I had a service contract with them). They again told me I needed a new unit so I called the same competitor for a bid. The competitor said all I needed was an inexpensive circuit component. No problems with home or office units ever since. Needless to say, I changed my service contract from McCarthy on all my properties and will tell anyone who listens to beware of McCarthy "service" people. read more

Do. Not. Use. Our AC was no longer blowing cold air and a tech came out and told us that not only was our unit super old, but that we need to buy a new one because the coils were bad. He set up a consultation with their sales department and left, with a $10k estimate on a new AC unit. We had a second guy come in from a different company and he told us we needed to replace our filter for 50 cents. And WOW! AC works. They tried to sell us a $10,000 air conditioner for a 50 cent fix. read more

I have been doing business with McCarthy's for about 2 years. Everything has been great up until now. Mark, a comfort advisor/manager of this company came over after their technicians advised that I did not have much time left on my furnace. Due to poor installation of the last furnace, I could understand & get behind getting a brand new furnace. Now here is where it gets bad, because Mark took advantage of me being a new home owner as well as being extremely stressed with the situation. I don't have a newer home exactly, so I was thinking to myself "oh great, another repair yet again!" I told Mark that I could NOT afford a certain amount per month for financing & expected him to stand by it, because of the trust I had with McCarthy's. The first financing deal fell through for whatever reason, so he tried his best to get me another deal. Mark did find another deal & this is where he failed in my eyes. He did not go through the details of it with me & like an inexperienced person with things as this, I did not double check the work which is partly on me. (I now pay near triple the amount per month than what I can afford, which is going to put me in the hole financially, but make a nice sale for them). I thought McCarthy's was more about helping rather than just making a sale, but I guess I am absolutely wrong. I had the company relay to Mark that I would like to talk to him about the deal. Mark called me back after the second time I called them. We talked about the pricing & he told me to just go ahead & take out a personal loan from my bank account to pay for the financing that I had just taken out with whatever company just accepted my furnace payments. Very displeased with this person in general for the simple fact as I said earlier, I had respect & trust with this company as I was referred there by a work associate. Now the two star rating was for the technicians because they actually did do an amazing job installing the new furnace as well as cleaning the air ducts of my almost 140 year old home! Without them, it would have been one star. Thank you techs, you are amazing! I will not use this service again due to what this experience has caused, which is a lack of trust! EDIT: John McCarthy & his operations manager Ben came to my house personally & met with me about the above situation. We had a conversation about how things could be changed for a better customer experience. The mistake stemmed from an error in McCarthy's computer system & they have expressed that going forward they plan on fixing the issue or removing the item in question that caused this error. John & Ben were apologetic & understanding of the issue, and after a good conversation, we came up with a solution to help me through the misunderstanding. The Tech that showed up was nice in the beginning and was knowledgable. He explained things to me as I have a family member that does heating and air so I know how AC and Heating units work. Then I explained to the Tech that I work from home and will be in a meeting call for an hour for my job. He completes his job and is waiting in my house for me to complete my meeting then tells me that it is disrespectful to ignore him in my house. This guy tells me that my capacitor is bad and will cost $350.00!!! People capacitors are maybe 10 bucks of the shelf and for install only $100 at the most. It's to bad I needed my AC as I have babies in the house. Never ever use this company they are over priced and the Techs are self centered and dont care that this is your house. read more

We had a quote given for an air conditioning and heater system and were quoted $12,000. When we asked for a breakdown of costs the salesperson wouldn't supply it and started sending a list of what he took off (they snuck in a warranty and some extra things that they weren't up front about). We were told duct cleaning was included but it was $500 included in the quote. After the dishonesty and run around from this company we went with Getzschman. They quoted us less than $10,000 for a higher end air conditioning unit and heater than what McCarthys provided. Also, they're throwing in a free thermostat (McCarthy's charges $900 for this). read more

McCarthy's is totally ripping off my sister as I write this review. Charged her for replacing a part that is under warranty and forced her into a service contract to do any work. The second opinion on the repair uncovered the total rip off McCarthy's put her through and they are not willing to refund any of her charges. McCarthy's is not who you are looking for. My 3 day install took well over a month. It was a parade of mistakes, laziness, and unprofessionalism. But the real problem is that they hit our sprinkler line while installing the AC. Due to being out of town and it being very rainy during the time, we didn't notice that it was running across our property to a side that isn't visible from our windows - not that it would have mattered. It flooded our guest room, which we don't use regularly. The manager claims that we were negligent for not watching our property everyday in the rain while we were gone. If we would have caught it sooner, the problem wouldn't have been that bad. Half a room flooded, and a utility room, it wasn't really that bad. So, because he's acting dishonest, we filed a claim with insurance. However, Scott and his company will not respond to my insurance so the two insurance companies can sort this out. This has to be the most dishonest and lowest moral character move I could imagine. Does McCarthy's carry insurance? Does it matter if they won't respond? Picture the work you want them to do going south terribly, multiple times, over and over. Do you want the hassle? Do you want to deal with the dishonesty. If he would be a stand up guy, we'd be done. It's just insurance money...or maybe it's not if you aren't insured. read more

On June 8th we called McCarthy's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning because our AC was no longer cooling the second level of our home. A tech was able to make it out that same afternoon. He advised us that the evaporator coil needed to be replaced (for $2,500) and that 10 pounds of refrigerant needed to be added (for $3,070). (Since our coolant is being phased out, it is true that it is pretty expensive.) Since a repair would be over $6,000, he recommended replacing the unit and had us set up an appointment the following day with a sales rep. We called a second company for a second bid/opinion. This company recommended replacing the filter and adding 1 pound of coolant. We cancelled the appointment for McCarthy's sales rep and paid them about $100 service charge for essentially nothing. Positives- same day service and good communication with both parties in the house read more

I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy! My sisters furnace quit working when she was sick. Called this place, and they insisted she needed a new furnace. (Even tho she just bought the house 5 months ago and the furnace passed inspection). They told her the new furnace would cost her $5500. And if she got a new central air unit, that would add $10,000 to her bill. She agreed to the furnace. After the fact we showed their paperwork to 2 other companies and were told that she was totally ripped off. They could have repaired her old furnace for $300. When we tried to discuss this with the manager, he was a horrible, arrogant jerk about the whole thing. So please- don't make the mistake that we did by calling this place!! Ok I've updated my review to one star. I've had a few issues with them and had to file a BBB complaint. It's been 2 weeks and no communications. They continue to charge my card for monthly fees even though I've asked them to stop and refund for an erroneous technician assessment. I know see what other people are complaining about, that they attempt to gain money from people and then blame techs that "no longer work for them" Please avoid using this company. I am now filing a fraud charge with my credit card company and with the state's Attorney General. It doesn't take that long to respond to 4 emails and and BBB complaint. read more
