After shopping at McCaulou's in Danville for over 8 years, I was really disappointed by the customer service I received today. I brought up that a button had come off a pair of shorts, and the initial response made it seem like it was not their problem to fix it. After I was taken aback and complained, they offered a 10% discount. Then I asked if they could contact their Lafayette store to check whether they had a skirt I liked in a smaller size, and it felt like even that was too much trouble. I also spoke with the assistant manager about the service, but I can't say her attitude was much better. What made it even more frustrating was that this happened on a Saturday afternoon, and the store was practically empty. You would think they would want to take the time to help loyal customers. To be fair, I have shopped at McCaulou's many, many times, and this was the first time I had such a negative experience. Still, it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth and made me reconsider spending my money there. In this economy, with so many shopping options nearby in Walnut Creek, customer service matters. Five stars all the way! This is a hidden gem that is associated too strongly with years gone past. McCaulou's has really spruced up and has an excellent selection of clothes for women 40+. Quality items at discounted prices. Way, way better than shopping at the mall or downtown. Surprisingly fun and stylish clothes for women. The stores staff was rude to my wife and children. They spent hundreds but I wouldn't have given this store a dime. Don't bother coming to this store unless you look a certain way. Two older female employees yelled in the background that she wanted to ring up the purchases but they didn't want to. My wife was just gathering up the shoes to buy. This is really unacceptable behavior. Nobody should treat people especially children this way. I'm not sure if it had to do with commissions but either way, it shouldn't have happened. read more

One of the best department stores I've ever been to and a landmark of the area. I love McCaulou's. All for great reason. I went on Saturday to buy a gift for a baby shower and it was the perfect way to shop. Parked right in front and found everything I was looking for and more. I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet. I don't shop here often, but then I don't like to shop period. Most of my clothes shopping happens at Target because I go there so often for other things. I was pleasantly surprised when I first walked into this store. They have a lot more variety than I would have thought. I came only because this was where I was told I could buy a cub scout uniform. I've been in the store several times since then randomly shopping for various clothes items (mostly children) and toys. Their prices are surprisingly good. As mentioned above, they have more than clothes including a pretty decent selection of toys. It is like a Ross or Marshall's but better (in my opinion). The floor space is cluttered and crowded, but that just means they are able to cram a lot of variety into a smaller space. I don't mind it. I still hate shopping, but this is a decent option when you want to buy clothes that are nicer than the ones you can find at Target. read more

This store is super small and I almost feel claustrophobic with the clutter. BUT, If you purchase an item/items over 25$ they gift wrap for free which is awesome!!! They carry women's clothing , juniors clothing, men's clothing, infant/toddler/kids clothing, shoes, accessories, and beauty products. I walked out of there with two bags of awesome deals on everything from designer jeans to $3 clearance shirts. I'm conflicted because I've had both good and bad experiences with this store. Here's the good: They have a very cute juniors/young ladies department. There's a younger brunette gal who works in this department (I always forget to ask her name!) and she is so sweet! Her customer service is excellent and is always very helpful, whether I'm just browsing or buying up a storm. They have a number of sales racks where I've been able to find lots of cute tops for around $10-15, for which I get lots of compliments. Here's what I don't love: I've been coming here for over 15 years and I'm shocked to say that a lot of their practices have changed very little over the years. They have this annoying practice where they HAND WRITE their employee code + the cost of the item on the price tag, since they don't provide return labels or gift receipts. It's pretty obvious to figure out. Because of that, I never buy any gifts from this store unless it's for an immediate family member who doesn't mind that I've left the tag on if they need to return or exchange it. The same goes for their other products... they write prices in red all over the items, instead of sticking a label on, such that you could never give a sale item as a gift without it looking incredibly tacky. Then there's their gift wrap policy. It's pretty cool that they offer it to begin with BUT, they will not provide a box or gift wrap unless the item being wrapped is over $15, before tax. I recently spent over $300 during Christmas. Most were gifts; many of my items were on sale and some were just below the $15 mark. They refused to give me boxes for them, unless I combined them with other items. I mean, we're not talking about Nordstrom's gift wrap or anything. Its just boxes. The gift wrap is mediocre: basic wrapping paper, tissue and paper ribbons. Lastly, they really need to do better training or hire better quality people for their holiday season. This last December, my purchase of about 7-8 items lasted for OVER 20 MINUTES. The entire time, the older lady (who was sweet, just chatty and slow) was talking about her family, how she was a temp. seasonal hire, her vacations, etc... I even told her when I first walked up that I was in a bit of a hurry and not to worry too much about folding everything nicely. She just went right on talking and didn't change her pace one bit. They have some extremely nice people working here; but also some incredibly snobby, rude, and snarky people as well! I never know who or what I'm gonna get when I show up! Overall, it's a nice local department store that I'll continue to shop at on my lunch break as long as it's within the parameters that I've mentioned above! read more

My seventy-six year old mother-in-law loves this store. And so I begin. I can find clothing for everyone in the family here. Brand names, low prices. While you don't have a shopping cart, to me it still has that Ross feel to it. The isles are small and cluttered and the layout of the store is much like Ross with all genders and ages all being on one floor. They have good deals on kids clothing and shoes. I would say they have a juniors section but the store caters to an older crowd, and there isn't much for the twenty or thirty something either. It's a section that ranges from 12-30 and is no more than a few isles. My husband has found some things occasionally but for a great deal. I like that they offer Clinique and Estée Lauder. This is it for cosmetics. But better than nothing. All in all this store is ok, but if I were an older lady I would love it. read more

My son has a class in the shopping center and I would always drive by. I saw they had Carters clothes and wanted to see what they were about. So I go in and this place is bigger than it looks. I started to look at the Carters clothes and noticed that they cross out the msrp and put in their own price. Funny because even at their own price I would NEVER pay that even at a Carters store. On a good day I can get it for half the price they were trying to charge. Even in the "up to 75% off" racks their prices were still pretty darn expensive. I wanted to browse on but actually couldn't because it was not handicap/stroller accessible. It makes me wonder how they haven't gotten dinged for it. I am disabled and had a stroller and I couldn't get to the lower level and if they did have an area to easily get down it wasn't obvious. I also wasn't about to go outside just to go back in through another door to get to the lower level. NOT acceptable. I wouldn't recommend this place what-so-ever. An interesting juxtaposition of old time small department store (most kids would say "what's that"?) but still relevant for todays needs. I come in here infrequently but occasionally looking for a gift, but usually leaving not only with my gift but a little something for me too. The women's dept. is great for older woman and I see many older ladies shopping with personal customer service and ease of shopping. I can find some cute clothing, but really geared toward a more mature woman. They have a great teen department and children's dept. (perfect for my gift shopping). And I can't really speak for the mens, but it seems to be full of choices. Close parking and the gift wrap available (who does that anymore?). I sometimes forget it's there when I need something close by, but everytime I go in I seem to find something to buy. So handy. read more

This store is the absolute BEST! I shop here as much as I can due to accessible parking and selection of merchandise. The Women's Foundations Department has absolutely everything. The Customer Care Representative, Trish is always helpful and kind to assist me with whatever questions I have about the items I choose too. Very safe surroundings here too--small town atmosphere is appreciated. Close to Wells Fargo Bank, Walgreens, and Pet Food Express. Can get so much accomplished in a short amount of time too. The selection of men's clothing is surprisingly good for the small size of the store. I try to frequent it first when looking for something, to support local businesses. For staples like shirts , socks, t-shirts, jeans, swimming suits etc and I could easily find at a bigger department store or Amazon I try to go here first. I was in today around 4:30 to have a gift wrapped. The older woman that wrapped my gift wasn't the usual friendly, accommodating store clerk that I've always interacted with at McCaulous. I first asked if I could include another item in the box and she curtly said no, we don't do that. I then asked her if she could place 1 piece of tape on each fold and she rolled her eyes, as if my request was too unreasonable. I have lived in Danville for 22 years, and have had many gifts wrapped at McCaulous. It has always been a pleasant experience except for today. She actually put me in kind of a bad mood. My review is mostly for the friendly service I received from Alexis. I stumbled upon this little gem of a store about a year ago. I had about 15 minutes to spare before picking my kids up from a sports activity. Once I realized what this store was, and that they carried name brand clothing like Nike, Free People, Volcom, Converse, etc, I knew I would need to come back again. About a week later, I had an hour to spend browsing the store and immediately the sales associate Alexis recognized me and welcomed me back. She asked if I had more time to spend and asked me about myself. Somehow we got on the subject of my children. We probably chatted for about 15 minutes and I left with the cutest Free People tank tops. Fast forward to this week, a year after our encounter, and I stopped quickly with my daughter to look for school clothes. Alexis spotted me, remembered my name, and remembered my daughter!!! From just a conversation! As someone that has managed sales associates, I can't explain the value in employees like Alexis. Although your store is quite the find, I will be coming back simply because of the service that Alexis has provided. I have told others about his store and her service. For those that do t care about the service, the store is pretty awesome too. Make sure you have time to scope everything. Every time I go to this place I usually leave extremely frustrated and in a horrible nood. Mainly when I'm trying to return something. Doesn't matter which location, Danville, Lafayette, and I'm sure Moraga is the same. This store is stuck in the 90s and is incredibly antiquated when it comes to their system. Even if you have a receipt, (Lafayette specifically) has told me that the same person who bought the item needs to be the one to return it. What's the point of a receipt??? And you also need to have the same credit card as opposed to just having a receipt. No way to look up anything. I'm all for mom and pop stores, but the employees have also never been that nice to me either. Not all, but most just seem like grumpy, old woman. I honestly can't believe this store is still around. It's not Amazon that's just killing your business, it's the people, owners, system and selection of woman's clothes. Don't get me wrong yes it's nice to have a small department like store nearby, and they have nice kid clothes etc, but they should improve some things if they want to stay around longer and compete with places like Target. Also I don't like how they use plastic bags and wouldn't reuse a returned one because it's too ugly. Not very environmentally friendly considering it's 2019. read more

I had to stop by to pick up a plain tee for my son and a pair of shoes for my one year old and OMGsh, service is sweet but a bit on the slow stale side. The store is cute...old school single-floor department store with an extensive childrens' area complete with toys. I picked up a pair of salt water sandals for daughter and a plain tee for my son cause I forgot an undershirt for his jiu jitsu gee. Danville Jiu-Jitsu is literally across the street so it's super convenient. Will probably be back to check out what else they have. read more

An interesting little shop; as others mentioned, mostly geared toward the 60+ crowd and a bit close, cluttered feeling. I've been shopping here, however infrequent, for the last 10 years. When my daughter was little it was a great place to find a cute outfit that didn't break the bank. Now that she's older I find us making those emergency birthday party-that-I-wasn't-told-about-in-advance gifts. The young mens section has more desirable items then does the girls junior section. Although I was shocked recently to find they are now selling Miss Me jeans!!! and for a few $ less than the mall. read more

The store itself is a little bit overwhelming because it feels like they try to pack everything in as much space as possible. It's like squeezing into a size 0 when you are really a size 5/6. Too bad this place doesn't sell muffins. Anyway, the "75% off" signs grab my attention, but then when you get up closer to the sign (it's really misleading) there is very fine print that says "up to" next to a screaming "75% off" so pack your bifocals to read the legal verbiage. Things are marked kind of on the high side as well so I guess if you are getting 75% then perhaps you are getting a good deal. I talked to Bonnie in the Boy Scouts Department on the phone for some BSA related items, and she was so kind and patient about telling me the prices that I think it's pretty much the same price as the Boy Scouts Station Store in Pleasant Hill. Everything was reasonably priced. So I purchased about $25 worth of BSA patches there for my son and husband's uniforms, and I felt good about shopping and supporting this local store. Unfortunately, they only had one kind of male leader uniform shirt and pants that my husband and I found kind of stiff and cardboard like so I think we might have to bite the bullet and drive out to the BSA Pleasant Hill location or order online for his uniform. The store also doesn't let you use the $10 off $50 coupon (look for it as they send it out in the mail from time to time) for any BSA items so I was kind of bummed about that. But despite not being able to use the coupon, Bonnie is super sweet, and she kind of reminded me of any kind of cheerful normal Mom unlike my own who is kind of grumpy and nutty. So perhaps I kind of got lost in conversation with her and hearing about her two very accomplished daughters, and how she is always rooting and cheering them on. It's kind of a reminder that if all Mothers were like Bonnie then perhaps there would be less screw ups in this world like myself. Anyway, I think when I feel like a loser, I'll just have to go chat with the super nice ladies like Bonnie at McCaulou's. They all look like older Moms with grown up children/young adults who work there not for the money, but for something to do to get out of the house. So thank you, Moms at McCaulou's Department Store for uniting 76 year old grannies and 36 year old mommies alike. We can all squint in harmony at the "up to 75% off signs" and hope to score some bargains when we're not chatting with you for mental therapy. read more

This store is a hidden gem of the East Bay. Their selection of merchandise is outstanding. They carry Boy Scout uniforms (how convenient!) , amazing boots brands from Hunter and kids rain boots, famous cosmetic brands, golden state warriors gear, San Francisco Giants gear.... they have a great selection of just so many items. They also have free gift wrapping!! I was told by a sales person that many people do all of their holiday shopping here and get it all gift wrapped. They just receive a call the next day to pick up their wrapped gifts. Every time I shop at this store I find myself thinking, why don't I shop here more?? It's so convenient. They have amazing items to purchase. Their sales racks are full of discounted items. I suggest stopping by to shop the next time you have a baby shower or party to attend. They also have baby clothes for sale on racks by gender. Best part is that they have a gender neutral rack of items which is so helpful for those baby showers we attend where the parents choose not to find out the gender of the baby. read more
