This is the place to eat in Chicago in my opinion, and has made every other restaurant look bad. it's the absolute best meal in the city, at a great price, with a super awesome staff. Sunday Funday with a fantastic first visit to a Chinatown gem! I felt like Chinese food today, and rather than eating at my neighborhood regular, I wanted to go straight to Chinatown for the most delicious, authentic experience. Thanks to my deep dive and discovery on Yelp, MCCB turned out to be the perfect spot to achieve this. The restaurant has held its Michelin status for five years now, and for my first time visiting, the flavors here were incredible. Please note: the restaurant signage is not easily visible from the street since the storefront faces inward toward the mall plaza, and while looking for it, I ended up asking a local man and his wife for directions. He was so kind and welcoming that he unexpectedly left his wife on the sidewalk, my husband in the car, and walked me right across the street and into the mall to point it out from the inside! WAIT TIME: there is a 1 to 1.25 hour wait period to be seated for a table, and a $10 fee via credit card is required to secure your spot, which is then fully transferable to your bill upon checkout. The wait is a great time to walk, explore the shops, restaurants, all Chinatown has to offer, and get your steps and miles in! SERVICE: our first server, Allen, was a bit on the stiff, curt side, but overall nice. However, we had to move from a two-top table to a four-top to accommodate all the dishes we were trying. In that changeover, we were blessed to get one of the BEST servers there, Ashley, who made the experience wonderful. FOOD: we ordered an absolute feast, starting with three starters. The Cheng Du Style Dumplings were fantastic. The Crispy Crab Rangoons were actually not mini at all and had a great crunch. The Szechuan Style Cucumber was a bit underwhelming and a slight bit on the soft side for my tastes, as I prefer my veggies crunchy even when cooked. We ordered everything with the mild heat option so there was no overwhelming spice, just great flavor. For the main dishes, we started with the Cauliflower Flank Steak and added broccoli to it, which was a fantastic addition. It is cooked in an oyster sauce and has none of the standard sweeter seasonings of the other dishes. I chose this to balance a sweet and salty rationing across my dishes, finding that MCCB is a great place to get that perfect balance. The Chicken in Spicy Garlic Sauce was perfect with the mild heat option as well, and the Honey Black Pepper Flank Steak was also incredibly savory, tender, and good. We paired everything with garlic string beans, white rice, and a great jumbo shrimp fried rice. I preferred water, while my husband had a few Diet Cokes. The food comes out hot, fresh, and bursting with flavor. PARKING: parking is convenient--there is street parking or you can use the two north and south lots within walking distance. The north lot is on Archer and Wentworth, and the south lot is on Cermak and Wentworth. Validated parking is permitted for a maximum of 3 hours, and you will only pay $3 with the validation. Just make sure to stay within that time limit and get it validated, because if you go over the 3 hours or forget the validation, you will have to pay the full price for the lot. PRICE: the pricing here is very reasonable for a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Our dinner came out to just under $146 total, which offers phenomenal value given the large portions and top-tier quality. If you are seeking high-quality, delicious Sichuan food in Chinatown that completely lives up to its multi-year Michelin status, and can be customized perfectly to your spice comfort, this is a great place to go. Let me start by saying: coming here alone was a mistake. Even a party of two is pushing your luck. Three hungry, voracious people maybe, four-plus ideally. Pretty much everything is served family-style, and designed for groups to order and share various dishes. I ordered the Crab Rangoons, West Lake Beef Soup, and the Traditional Hong Sue Pork (Pork Belly). The Crab Rangoons were fantastic. They were served fresh from the fryer, still piping hot! The wonton was thin and crisp, and the filling was tasty. Of note, it leaned slightly away towards funky (fish sauce) and towards sweet. The filling also used onion! I am by no means complaining, just notes for completeness. This is also the only dish I could finish, as it was four rangoons. The West Lake Beef Soup was well executed and balanced in terms of ingredients. I also loved the pepperiness! I took home most of. It, and happily finished it off in the next couple of days. My only note as a matter of preference is that I would prefer a little less starch, and a little more salt. The Hong Sue Pork was among the softest and most tender Pork Belly I've had! Everything, including the skin part, all melted in my mouth. These were in a savory, sweet, and lightly salty sauce which gave both the protein and the rice to which they are added fantastic flavor. Further, while not a vegetable-forward dish, I liked the addition of bok choy. When it comes to the service, it was all around fantastic! The staff is efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable. I especially want to recognize their incredible ability to read the room. The staff didn't come up while I was stuffing my face, but when I looked up and briefly made eye-contact, that was correctly taken as a cue to approach. Food also came out in a reasonable time frame considering how busy it was. Finally, we come to the prices. Due to the prices of pretty much everything, I was pleasantly surprised! The volume and quality of food came out to a non-shocking price! Final verdict: My only negative is that MCCB is not solo-diner friendly. One is free to take food home, but it's not the same. Be sure to double check your bill because they do put a surcharge on there. Keep in mind, They do NOT hold a Michelin star! We ordered the wontons. That was my favorite dish it was fresh and filling. Very spicy! We also ordered the chili fried chicken. It was good , very spicy! Only order these if you like spice and slight bitter with a hint of sour. Lastly we ordered the combination fried rice. It tasted like nothing honestly. The food was not Michelin star worthy. I wouldn't come here again. Everything is reasonable price, large serving portions. The service here is terrible! Be ready for that. Table arrangements are cramped as they clean the tables they spray the spray bottle everywhere and it will get onto your food. The employees appear to not be cognizant of cleaning supplies contaminating nearby customers dishes. It's a very tight small restaurant space. That is a common issue in there. OMG the Cheng Du Spicy Dumplings were the best I have ever had in my life. They were delicate without a thick wrapper with just enough kick that wasn't overbearing. Definitely will be ordered next time we go. The honey black pepper flank steak with very tender with a slight hint of the honey and pepper that really blended well together. The portion size was huge for the price which was similar to the shrimp dish. I couldn't believe the food quality for the price. The restaurant is VERY small so expect a wait but you can walk around Chinatown while you wait for your table. People were complaining about a 60 to 90 minute wait so people did pull out of line. I can't believe I accidentally deleted my photo of the special fried tofu!! I wanted to display the massive portion and well-seasoned greatness. That tofu was fantastic! Great flavor, perfectly fried to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I asked for a little extra spice and they delivered with the jalapeños. The sever also gave me some chili oil too. I was so very excited to try this restaurant that people rave about on social media. Got there just before the crowd. Waited maybe 10 minutes. When you arrive, they will ask for your name and a $10 deposit that will go towards your meal. If you decide to get off of the list on your own, the $10 is non refundable. (No problem) We were seated at a table and it took quite a while for the server (don't know his name) to come to our table. When he did come to the table, he didn't introduce himself and he just stared at us. After a few seconds he says "You ready to order?" I tried to lighten the mood and ask his name and he didn't want to tell me. Ok... We order a few appetizers to start. We also ask a few questions, none of which he was able to understand. (We truly thought there was a language barrier so we extended grace and didn't think much of it) Got the appetizers. They were decent.. but... A group of 4 people sat to the immediate right of us, not only did he great them, he gave them several recommendations for appetizers and entrees. (No language barrier in sight) Was very much friendly and attentive to them. Still never came back to the table but continued to take great care of the tables around us. At this point we decided that it would be best to go somewhere else for entrees. In all of my years of dining out, I have put this on top 3 of my worst experiences. I had been wanting to try MCCB for a while, but I also went in with tempered expectations. In my experience, Michelin-recognized restaurants can sometimes be a little overhyped, so I expected to be somewhat let down. Thankfully, that wasn't the case--I enjoyed the meal overall, even if it wasn't a "wow, this is the best meal ever" experience. The biggest surprise for me was the dried chili chicken. I almost didn't order it because so many reviews said it was overly salty and spicy. We asked for less salt, and they were happy to accommodate. I actually thought the spice level was very manageable, and it ended up being one of my favorite dishes. The orange chicken was another pleasant surprise. I expected it to be a basic, Americanized option, but it was delicious and ended up being one of my favorites of the meal. My friends really enjoyed the dan dan noodles, which seem to be one of their signature dishes. Personally, I thought they were good but not particularly memorable compared to everything else. The mango shrimp was tasty as well, but it wasn't something I'd consider a must-order on a return visit. Service was great. The green beans were cooked perfectly with a nice crunch! Unless you get there as soon as they're open, you're probably gonna have a bit of a weight so I put your name on the list and then go look around Chinatown come back and get absolutely full. The portions are family sized so if you got a big group, all you would need is about two entrées and you're good to go. We ordered takeout this time, but after seeing the atmosphere, I wish we had dined in. Be prepared--the wait was around an hour and a half. They take a $20 deposit to hold reservations, and judging by how many people happily waited, it's clearly worth it. There was one dish in the dining room that smelled absolutely incredible, and I'm still sad I didn't figure out what it was. I'll definitely be eating in next time. The mapo tofu was one of the best I've ever had. It was different from the style I usually prefer--I typically like a thicker, richer sauce--but this one had a lighter consistency while still packing amazing flavor. The place is a little spacious but the wait and line is always out the door no matter what time of the day you go. Plan ahead to walk around and explore while you wait. This was labeled as medium spicy. Told the waiter we wanted it spicy. He kept asking if we were sure and we kept having to reassure him that we can handle very spicy (husband is South Asian and I'm Southeast Asian). We didn't find any of these dishes spicy at all when they came out. The apps were not good. I felt it lacked that unami and desperately needed salt or something. Also I don't think they work well as cold dishes and would be better served warm/hot. The fish however was delicious. Steamed to perfection and the sauce worked really well with it and a fresh bowl of rice. We were in a trance and absolutely obliterated the sucker.
