We have been here twice now and loved it both times. It's a laid back casual place with all outdoor/screened in porch seating. There are yard games for you to play while you wait for a table. I had the fried fish sandwich with the homemade chips. My kids had the cheese quesadilla with fries and the corndog with chips. They both enjoyed their food. We love the eye spy/scavenger hunt on the kids menu to keep the kids busy while you wait! It's actually fun for everyone to participate in. Only things I can knock them for is there is a single stall bathroom for both genders so there is a good chance you will wait in line. I also am not personally a fan of ordering a and being given a can of soda or water bottle with a cup of ice. Other than that its a great place I would definitely recommend! read more

They were super busy on Memorial Day, but our server was still pretty attentive. They don't do fountain drinks, so you do have to pay for a bottle of water or get a can of soda but they bring it with a cup of ice. They have a screened in patio with fans, an outside deck, and a high top area you can sit at if you're just ordering drinks. I had a salad that was surprisingly really really good! Edisto Island offers many unique family owned and operated businesses. McConkey's is definitely one of them. The place is unique and the people are awesome. I've been to several of the area's restaurants and this place is full of big personalities, big sandwiches and a cool vibe across the board. The hot dog of all things stood out on a custom baked bun. 11/20 and 11/21/25 here two nights in a row. Friendly staff and delightful waitress named Maxine, who checked on us and was personable and attentive. We ordered drinks, with my wife getting a red wine which she as pleased with, and my "Charleston Mule was delicious. We ordered an appetizer of chips and salsa (came with salsa and queso). The salsa was probably the best tasting salsa we have ever eaten. We ordered a 2 oz cup of it to go it was so fresh. Second night I had the crab cake sandwich and the white had the grilled chicken sandwich and both were very good. First night we got the Mahi-Mahi Tacos which were delicious. Four of us went here for a late lunch on a Tuesday in late February. A bit chilly on the inside deck, but out of most of the wind. Krystal was a fab waitress, got our order and whisked our drinks out right away. The special was a salmon BLT, which three of us had - all enjoyed it. The waffle fries were a big hit too. It is a pretty standard place to eat at and very conveniently located right next to Edisto Beach Park. However they do charge for water without telling you in person. You know when you first get seated they ask what you want to drink and most people by default would say something along the lines of "Water for now." Well we did and she brought out two bottles of water. Right at that moment we saw that they charge for water on the menu since their town water is salty. We had her take a bottle back since I'm a human cactus anyway. It would be nice to hear, "We charge for water here, is that all right?" Clearly we are not from there given our northeastern accent. She was nice though and took the unopened bottle back. I really liked their chicken quesadilla. It was very large and loaded with cheese.They charged 99 cents for me to add jalapeño peppers but they loaded it so it's okay in my book. I'm used to being charged 99 cents for "extra" (sliver) of pickles. I got chicken and peppers in every bite. Best distributed quesadilla ever. The burger was also very delicious. Can't go wrong with a tender juicy party and fluffy buns! read more

If you have a food allergy, please never come here. Even if you don't, I'd still recommend avoiding this place. We came in on Wednesday, 7/1, for a family lunch before leaving town. Our waitress was super kind and friendly. When I ordered, I told her that I was gluten-free and had a gluten allergy due to celiac disease. When our food arrived, my meal didn't come with chips. They explained that the chips were cooked in the same fryer as gluten-containing foods and offered me coleslaw instead. I don't eat coleslaw, so I thanked them and said it was fine. At that point, I was glad the kitchen and waitstaff were being considerate of my allergy. Our waitress then came back and offered me a side salad instead since I hadn't been informed that my meal had been changed until after it was brought to the table. I accepted, and she rang it in. While I was waiting for my salad, I overheard my waitress talking to the manager on duty. They were discussing my meal, so I turned to listen. The manager was only about 10 feet from our table, so it was very easy to hear the conversation. I heard the manager tell the waitress that the burger I had just eaten contained gluten and had been made with a regular hamburger bun, even though I had clearly stated that I had an allergy. I immediately became extremely anxious because I believed I had just eaten gluten, which could seriously harm me. After the manager finished criticizing the waitress, she went back to work and never came over to tell us that I may have been served gluten. We had to wave her down ourselves and ask about the conversation we had just overheard. She responded, "Yeah, it wasn't entered correctly, but let me check whether the cook made it correctly or not." There was no apology, no sense of urgency, and it didn't seem like she had any intention of speaking to us. If I had needed immediate medical attention, it could have been delayed because the manager never informed us of the possible mistake. My side salad was brought to the table, but I didn't even take a bite. I asked the manager whether I would be charged for it because I assumed it had been offered as a courtesy since there had been no communication about the changes to my meal. I explained the situation, and all she said was, "I'll just take the salad then," before removing it from the table. Again, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the situation. If she had simply explained why they couldn't accommodate my allergy and communicated with us respectfully, this experience would have been very different. Instead, she was rude and completely insensitive to the fact that she had caused a guest to panic over the possibility of consuming something that could cause serious harm. I understand that not every restaurant can safely accommodate food allergies because of the way their food is prepared. However, that was never explained to me. Based on the way my order was handled, I was under the impression that they had procedures in place for accommodating allergies. I am extremely upset because I am now worried that I may have consumed gluten, and I am even more disappointed by the way the manager handled the situation. read more

McConkey's Jungle Shack in Edisto is a true hidden gem. We started with the onion rings, which were lightly battered, crispy, and came with a creamy dipping sauce that paired perfectly. For my meal, I ordered the fish and chips. Instead of the fries I was expecting, the dish came with freshly cut potato chips, which was a nice surprise. The fish itself was flaky, crispy, and very enjoyable--though I did feel the batter could've used just a touch more seasoning or salt. My husband had the fish tacos, which were essentially the same fish fillet from my dish, topped with a creamy, flavorful sauce. He agreed with me that the fish was perfectly cooked but could've used a little extra punch in the seasoning. The atmosphere, though, is what really makes McConkey's shine. It's a quirky, eclectic dive full of character, with a staff that keeps things light and funny. We sat outside near the bar area--affectionately called "the ditch"--and even overheard the kitchen crew using some colorful language, which honestly just added to the whole experience. It's laid-back, a little campy, and absolutely charming. For drinks, I highly recommend the Fatty's Lager. Cold, crisp, and a perfect pairing for the seafood. All in all, McConkey's Jungle Shack is worth the trip off the beaten path. First Winter visit to Edisto and the last night we decided to go out to eat. Spreading things around each time we visit...we chose McConkey's. No crowd and very comfortable inside even though the weather had been warmer during our stay. Fried oysters as the appetizer were great as was the shrimp and chips I had. we had a group of 10 people. we were seated after a brief wait. After being seated, we waited over 10 minutes for someone to take our drink order, then took more than 15 minutes to get our sodas, waters and cups of ice. We were informed immediately that our group could only be split into 2 separate checks, which we did not agree with. Never were we asked again if we wanted an additional drink/refill. We ordered our appetizers and they came out same time as our entrees. We asked multiple people, multiple times for additional items, ranch, more drinks and had to wait too long. We ordered additional appetizers, which did not arrive until we had finished our meals. The batter on the fish and chips basket was awful and greasy. it had to be removed to eat the fish. The chicken nachos were pretty good. The mahi salad was small with a tiny strip of mahi. The fried pickles appetizers were good but came after we finished our entrees, not prior to our meal. Waitress seemed flustered and inexperienced. Other patrons seated after us, received their meals and multiple drinks quicker than we did. Since the tickets were split into 2, we were charged a $38.47 gratuity. No additional tip was given. In the past, we've made McConkey's our top choice for dinner. This experience changes that choice. This is our second time visiting MacConkey. We enjoyed the first time and we enjoyed it the second. If you expect a 3.5 to 4.0 experience, it's exactly what you're gonna get. Nice little beach restaurant relaxed environment. Nothing too spectacular.Food was good. We had the fish sandwich and it was slightly dry. But I still enjoyed it. Most importantly (for me!), they took my favorite item off the menu...this amazing Cashew Curried Chicken Wraps is no longer! Huh?? WHY??? I resorted to ordering their Buffalo Chicken again. While good, it was SO greasy that it was truly hard to eat. Also, their house-made chips weren't as fresh as usual...and a bit too greasy as well. Was super excited to come, as our friends raved about the blackened mahi tacos and overall atmosphere. We arrived at 7:20ish and they close at 8pm; as former SIN workers, closing means that's when we shut the door, but not here. Also, the fact they are open until 8pm on a Saturday during tourist season is unreal. The bar for a drink while waiting for a table too forever; that's because there's 1 bar for the entire dining area and side bar/"beer garden" and only 1 employee doing both. They tapped the keg of the beer we were wanting and the bartender couldn't change it because of being so busy; they told a server and I never saw a manager come to assist with the change. We were finally seated (we had large party and was broken up, which is understandable) and the server took forever to come by just for our drinks. Several of the party ordered lemonade and it was super watery, same with sweet tea; we weren't able to get refills of either because they were out for the night. Instead our party ordered sodas and water (which is served by can/bottle only); we were charged for these (original drink refills were free). While we were waiting for our drinks and apps, another person came over and wanted to take our order because the kitchen was about to close (this was 8;19; and we were not the last party seated)..our server came back maybe 2 times from initial drink order and refill order. Took over 30 mins for our food to arrive, and it came out 3 orders at a time, with mine being the last one 45 mins later. The burgers, tacos and wings were good, the fried items (shrimp, fish and chicken tenders) were cooked in super old oil and were not good at all. We were auto gratuity at 20% (which is what we'd typically tip), but given how awful the service and food was, it was not 20% worth it. read more

We are sorry we haven't tried McConkey's sooner! We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and casual vibe. We took the kiddos there tonight because they have a wide variety and we have a very picky eater. We selected the fried fish, crab cake sandwich, bacon ranch fries and the crab dip for an appetizer. It was all outstanding and reasonably priced! The breading on the fish was just right and the homemade chips were a nice change instead of fries. The crab cake was fall apart good and not loaded with fillers. The bacon ranch fries were very tasty and the crab dip wasn't bad either. None of us were disappointed in our meals! It was pretty busy and all 3 servers were hustling. We loved our server, Denzel W. (Not Washington but he was just as awesome!) ! He even accommodated our daighter's request for lemons and gave her a new saying, "lemons are good for you and you should let your kid eat them". Great service and good food and drinks! The setup takes a minute to figure out. You check in at the patio but then go around to the side of the building where there is the Sand Bar. You order a drink and then wait for your table. The dining area is on the small side, but there is plenty of room at the table. Service is quick, and our waiter was attentive even though they were busy! We had the turkey wrap, which was good, but I definitely wish I had done one of the seafood options. Husband had the fried fish sandwich and said was it fantastic, has a spicy tartar sauce it comes with. We did fried pickles, and they were delicious, crispy pickles and light breading. We did drinks, forgot to take pics of those. I had Dahwoo punch, light and refreshing and he had Honeysuckle mule he enjoyed! Overall, definitely a place to check out when know Edisto! read more

We ordered the fish and chips which was $19.99. The fish was so overcooked it was rubbery. Half of the chips were stale and soggy. We sent it back and ordered a cheese quesadilla which was good and a turkey wrap. I found this restaurant to have no imagination or any original entrées. The decor was nothing to speak of. I will not be returning. The waitress was nice. I was appalled to see a Cuban sandwich offered that had pulled pork and served on a bun. What part of that sandwich is Cuban? McConkey's Jungle Shack is a topical-themed cafe that opened in Edisto Island, South Carolina in April 2007. It was founded by business partners Jennie Smith and Priscilla Padgett. The two were co-workers at a local restaurant that closed down. When they saw a restaurant space on Jungle Road that had been sitting vacant for six months, they decided to acquire it and make it their own. The name 'McConkey' was chosen in reference to John McConkey: an early owner of Edisto Island who helped develop the land in the early 20th century. A number of nearby landmarks are also named after him, such as McConkey Beach and McConkey Boulevard. The menu features burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps, fried seafood dishes, chicken wings, salads, tacos, and various appetizers. My family and I visited McConkey's Jungle Shack for dinner this past summer while we were on a road trip. Edisto Island is a small beach community with only a handful of restaurants. We heard a lot of great things about McConkey's, so we had dinner one night during our brief stay in the area. The place was packed during our visit. It's a popular hangout for tourists and locals alike. For cocktails, I had the "Sunset Sail" (Blue Chair spiced rum, banana rum, pineapple juice, Triple Sec, granadine, lime juice) while my wife had the "St. Pierre Paloma" (Finlandia grapefruit vodka w/ ruby red grapefruit & soda water). They were both refreshing tropical drinks! For food, I had the "McConkey's Famous Fish Tacos" (beer battered, fried flounder filets served in warm flour tortillas with shredded cabbage and McConkey's sauce, salsa and lime wedge), my wife had the "Grilled Tacos" (blackened shrimp served in flour tortillas with romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar, lime cream, and housemade pico de gallo), our older son had the "Chicken Fingers & French Fries" off the Kids Menu, and we ordered a "Basket of Hushpuppies" for the table. Everything was delicious! We all had an excellent experience at McConkey's and we highly recommend them to people visiting Edisto Island! UPDATE: A month after our visit, Edisto Island was hit hard by a tornado: a remnant of Tropical Storm Debby. McConkey's sustained considerable damage. As of this writing, the staff are rebuilding the dining porches and are on their way to reopening the restaurant ASAP. read more

I had higher hopes. A perfectly acceptable place. The food was O.K. Service was better than average. My wife didn't get her food until about 20 minutes after the rest of us. Most important to me, while it seemed like the type of place that would have a nice beer selection, they only had 2 offerings on tap. The rest were cans/bottles. I had a margarita instead, and it was very good. I chose my old standby--fish and chips. The fish was excellent but in this case the "chips" were homemade potato chips, not French fries, which I would rather have had. The appetizer was fried pickles, which were great. We had a 21 month old with us and he seemed to have a good experience. There is a small public park across the street with playground equipment, an excellent option to kill time after you order and are waiting for the food. Little kids don't like to be confined to a high chair when the food's not ready. Most diners would probably like this place. Maybe I'm being picky. read more

Food is the same beach food as usual. The atmosphere is always fun and every plate was finished. But fix your tipping recommendations to be based off the actual food cost and not the taxes also. This seems like a sneaky way to guilt people into tipping more. I'm not against tipping 15-22% but you know it should be based on the food price and service not taxes also. read more
