(Turns out I wasn't.) As it happened, I came across an article about finding insurance, and it recommended contacting an *independent* insurance broker, and that led me to finding Avail Insurance Solutions. Avail wound up finding a renter's insurance provider and one for earthquake coverage; the combined premiums totaled about the same as what my new, higher rate would have been for renters coverage only. I got in touch with the office and expressed my interest in getting this corrected or having other options before my policy renewed and managed to get Brian on the phone to discuss. He promised I would receive options or a solution by the next business day. I never heard back. I ended up switching to a different insurer (not through avail) and it took multiple attempts to get Avail to cancel my old policy. I think of the whole point of working with an agent is to get better service than dealing directly with an insurer -- with Avail that was certainly not the case.
