The five o'clock hour is close at hand, and weary workers from every land are closing in to get some quick grub. And though you wait in the drive-thru, McD's employees gather to chat, for no mere horn beep can summon them to pay attention. Ahahaha!
I'm reliving a nightmare from the safety of my snuggy, in the middle of a well-lit office. Don't judge me. I need comfort as I draw out horrible memories to write this review. Like the worst B-rated horror flicks, my trip to McDonalds began well enough. Several hours into a drive to the U.P., the beau and I decided to stretch our legs and catch a quick bite to eat before we found our real dinner. Convenience trumped a slog into Bay City. We showed up during rush hour, and of course, reasonably expected to wait a little longer given the long queue of cars snaking around the building.
This was one snake that simply didn't move once we got to the head of the line. Our small order hardly constituted a national crisis to ferret up a gluten-free cherry parfait or a total washdown due to a cheese allergy. We asked for a medium fry to share and two drinks. Shocking. The twenty-six minute wait (I counted) from order to reception meanwhile watched cars spillover into the adjacent gas station or turn back, rather than losing all hope.
Now enjoy the fun of hoping against hope the baby wouldn't wake up when the car stopped moving, or the sun percolated through his shade, and turned him into a squealing monster trying to sleep off teething pain. I looked repeatedly to the drive-thru window to assess developments. Were they haggling with local farmers for lettuce or harvesting salt from Lake Huron somehow? Was the ice being chipped off a block in exacting OCD pieces? We never did find out because the teenagers manning the registers and the drive-thru conspicuously inched away from the windows to have a rousing conversation with one another as the line grew longer and longer.
We did get our French fries. Then the window shut. My beau knocked politely to ask about our beverages. One came out, no straw. When we received drinks close to the thirty minute mark, three employees were busy asking if we had our fries, our drinks, and napkins in some weird Monty Python skit that would've been laughable if we were not 20 minutes delayed, baked by humidity, and thoroughly questioning if it were better to cut the losses of $5 and drive away.
Time wasted. Never again. read more
