Rick was very helpful even though he was so busy. We were in a bind when the engine light came on with a message about the temperature being 200 something degrees on my son's truck. He was to take me to the airport in Portland the following day. Rick grabbed his diagnostic machine and went to check the truck. He told us what it was and said we could drive it but it needed a new thermostat which he could not get to for a week or two. We are immensely grateful to Rick for taking the time to check it out being that it was a potential safety issue and we would have had to make alternate arrangements immediately. Drove through Newport on our way to Portland on Aug 17 in my VW Westfalia, was missing like crazy. Driving home from Depoe Bay, our car developed a leak in the radiator expansion tank. After a diagnosis by Northwest Radiator we were referred to Mcdowell's Auto as the best place for the repair. Visiting from Seattle, my check engine light came on. After reading reviews, I called here and arranged to bring the car in later in later in the day. I was greeted by name by a very friendly fellow (wish I could recall his name) who went out to the car to check what was going on. He returned a few minutes later, handed me a piece of paper with the code for what was wrong, told me it was minor and I should have it fixed when I returned home. We had been to two other shops to ask for a diagnosis and heard we needed a head gasket before they even took a look. After consulting with a family member who fixes cars in Colorado we decided to take another approach. Sure of our preliminary diagnosis (not a head gasket) we went to the owner at McDowell's. He was friendly, open to listening and said he could get it done the following day (all other shops said they were at least a week out). Even though the owner looked booked with a full shop, he got it in the next business day and got it diagnosed with a similar problem (still not a head gasket) and kept the price under his quote. He was honest, listened, friendly, and got it done so quickly we were back on the road in time for a trip to take our daughter to the airport in Portland with no problems. We are excited to have a good mechanic we can trust with our car. We were also happy with his rates and willingness to let us know about his savings with a part.
