On Friday May the 13th (Yes Friday the 13th), I pulled into a fuel station in Newport, Oregon to fill my 2002 Dodge RAM Diesel with fuel after driving from North of Seattle. (My fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank of fuel). As I was waiting in line for the fuel pump my truck ran out of diesel and the truck" died". I manually pushed my truck to the pump and pumped 34.5 gallons of diesel into the truck. My truck would not start then. Since it was late in the day and no diesel mechanics were available until Monday, I had my truck towed to where I am staying. This morning I phoned Steen's Master Lube at 0800 HRs and spoke with Kayla. She said, Yes, bring the truck in and they would repair it. I had the truck then towed to Steen's and after checking in with Kayla, she introduced me to Don, who then bled the fuel injectors and managed to get my truck in top running condition again. I cannot praise Steen's Master Lube and Kayla and Don enough for being willing to squeeze me in on a busy schedule and have my truck up and running in short time. Over priced for the work. The vehicle that I took in left with more damage than the original fix and let them know even before leaving the lot. And thier fix was add more stuff to the fuel when pretty sure they broke after a diagnostic from another mechanical company amd had the same issue kick in months later. read more

My car had a shimmy in it and I had taken it to a dealership but they couldn't find what was wrong so I took it to Steen's and they knew within a half hour what was wrong, got me in the next day to get it fixed. My brother recommended I reach out to Steens to see if they could help me. I was able to get in in a very reasonable amount of time and when I arrived, they immediately took my vehicle into the garage and started working. Everyone in there is so friendly, and they clearly all like each other. I thought it was really great that almost every customer that came in was greeted by their name so obviously they have built a lot of loyalty. We drove from Washington state. As the more miles we went the looser our steering wheel became. Asking the front desk of a reccomenedation, we were ended at Steen's. So thankful. If you are looking for a good car mechanic that is fair and reasonable, I'd highly recommend Steens Master Lube in Newport. I got stuck in Newport with a dead battery. Went to a couple different shops (leaving the car running) and was told it would be 3 days to get the correct battery in from Portland, or it could be over-nighted for an extra fee. Frustrated, I started calling the auto parts stores and low a behold found the right battery on the shelf at NAPA for a good price. Contemplating the best way to get this new battery in: tools needed, the car security system going haywire, etc. I ended up at Steens Master Lube. Russ, the owner, was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about my specific car's needs. He had me in and out of there in 20 minutes and wouldn't take a cent from me no matter how much I insisted. read more

Called Steen's two weeks ago as I was going to be in Newport for doctor's appt. Spoke to owner, he said he could get me in same day and he said to be sure not to be late. He was very candid about his guys watching the clock from 3:30 to close on Fridays. 'Meaning, service could suffer. I explained exactly what I wanted, had my own oil, my own transmission fluid, price, very reasonable, 100 dollars for everything. Two weeks later, today, happened to look in the back of my car and was shocked to see that my oil and transmission fluid had not been used as requested. Needless to say, not happy after taking the time to explain details. I called about 11:30 a.m. this morning. Spoke with Kayla initially, she put Justin on the phone. He asked a couple of questions, asked if he could call me back. I answered yes, please, surprise! No call back. That lie really pissed me off. I called at 4:00 p.m., answering machine, figures. I was from out of town and broke down on a Saturday night. I was able to make contact with Steen's during the weekend and was told to have my car there first thing Monday morning. My car arrived (by tow from Lincoln city) at 830am. I received a call from them and was told to come get my car around noon. When I arrived at noon, my car was ready!!! This still gave us some time to tourist around for the rest of the afternoon. If I didn't live so far away, this would be my new mechanic shop all the time. This place is great! I'm retired, on a limited fixed income and had a definite budget for getting a muffler on my old truck. Kayla tried to find parts but was unable to get them due to the Corona virus shutdowns. Russ took over, found a fix or workaround, and I drove away with a new muffler and exhaust all the way from the manifold back for a price I could afford. Really friendly and knowledgeable people from Russ to the office staff to the mechanic. I don't go to a mechanic often, as I try to save money by doing minor work myself. But when I need a mechanic, I'll definitely be back to Steen's. I've read the negative reviews here and they don't even sound like the same shop I went to. I was a few year customer until I had $600 of repairs done and my car. My car still had same issues I took it to another shop for 2nd opinion, they confirmed same work needed done. I called steens and was told by the owner that his mechanics had made several errors on many cars and he fired him and the front desk person and they cost him business. He went on to say how how devastated he felt. He did not offer any recourse for me. My boyfriend kindly paid ( I was out $$) another $600 to have same work done at another shop which showed us how the shoe pad had been shaved to incorrectly fit. I was very upset, called back steens to inform owner of the result of his mechanic's work proven by another shop. At this point was told by steens owner about some work guarantee, that I could of taken my car back to steens. So, then he offered a few free oil changes after I indicated I was completely disgusted with how he handled my situation previously. read more

Worst car repair of experience of my life. Had an oil leak and paid several hundred dollars to have front and rear main seals replaced. Still leaked so a while later had oil pan replaced, more money. Still leaked so took car in and was told they couldn't get to it now. Well when then? Dont know. Well I'm getting a little hot. I paid lots of bucks I want results. When they finally got around to looking under car they decided "it can't be repaired". OK so you sold me a defective part and can't fix it, give my money back. "Ain't happening, take us to small claims court and see what happens." I finally ended up getting money back for labor, but got stuck with a leaky oil pan. Had to replace it and pay competent people for new oil pan and installation. Out lots of money with no return on my investment. Give Steen's Master Lube a wide berth, don't go near them they will rip you off. Incompetent and dishonest. They don't deserve even 1 star. read more

Brought our car in for repairs and had the date pushed back 4 times. When they finally got to it after a month, they didnt have the right parts and had to get another mechanic in town to do it. They said the other mechanic would match the price they gave us but he didn't and when asked him to cover the extra he called me a variety of things I can't say in front of children and told me to never come back. read more

We had just arrived from Calif. on vacation in Newport, when our "Battery not charging" light came on. Even though I had just had our 2003 Chevy Tahoe thoroughly checked out by our mechanic back home, before our trip, I suspected it could be the alternator. Unfortunately, it was Sat. evening, and no place would be open until Mon. morning. Fortunately, we were staying within walking distance of the restaurants on the bay front and first thing Mon. morning, I was able to start it and drive to Steen's. They checked it out & knew right away it was the alternator. One quick phone call to their parts supplier and they said that they could have it fixed within a couple hours. I walked the 3/4 of a mile back to our hotel and came back after lunch. Sure enough, all done and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation! The part wasn't cheap, but the $58 in labor was less than I would have guessed it would have taken. We barely missed anything on our vacation and made it safe & sound back to home, 600 miles one way. read more

Thanks to Steen's Master Lube for alleviating this mothers' fear! My 20 yr old daughter was driving from Portland to Newport in her 2001 Outback for her job with OMSI at Camp Gray. One mile out of Eddyville, her care seems to overheat and is pegged at "H". Cell reception is sketchy and she manages to text me what is going on. I knew we had AAA and could get her car towed, but to where? Fortunately, I work with her older brother at a body shop and he hops online and searches for a mechanic shop nearby. He finds Steen's and calls them. Kayla answered the phone and the questions he had. She said they were busy but would be sure to take care of her once she and the car were towed to them and get her back on the road as soon as possible. My daughter didn't have to wait long once she arrived. The team at Steen's looked at her car and quickly determined it was most likely a stuck gauge. They topped off her coolant and sent her on her way at no charge. My daughter said they could not have been more kind and helpful. I called and thanked Kayla and she understood my worries, being a mother herself. A big THANK YOU to Kayla and Steen's crew for making this mom relieved. read more

I give these people absolutely no stars. I brought my truck in to fix a fuel leak and to fix the exterior door handle. I was going to have the interior door handle fixed if the price was going to be manageable also. They never gave me a quote on the gas leak. The closet estimate I got was under $500 dollars for everything but that was to be on the extreme high end. I had to call several times asking for an update. Each time I called I asked for an estimate and never got one. They never called me to update me on my vehicle but to tell me it wasn't going to be ready on a Friday but they swore it would be done Monday. Truck wasn't done till Wednesday. After 9 days they finally called me telling me my truck was ready and the bill was to be over $800. I told them no that was not an option. Owner said he would eat some hours even though it was a five hour job. Bill came down to 600 dollars. I paid with my Visa bank card and was charged $625. I will never recommend or take my vehicle back there. read more

Worst experience with car repair I've ever had. Brought the car into Steens on March 13 and on May 22 they still had not completed the work they were supposed to do. Also, the work they did was extremely questionable. Their receipt showed $415 under the title GOLDS yet when I spoke with Gold Motors to find out what the heck was going on, they told me they had never seen the car or sold parts for the car, or even spoken to Steens about the car. They also took out a brand new $250 GM part EGR valve that was installed by Car Care 50 miles prior, and put in a used one. No written estimate, no detailed invoice. I had to keep at them; Gina called me only a few times during this 11 week horror. During that time my car was not running and they had all the keys including the master key that they requested because the ignition lock quit working while there. I've had questionable repairs done before, but at 66 this is by far the most extreme and a clear cut case of dishonesty! Gina apologized for the dishonesty on the receipt, her father called it a 'communication problem' - really?! I have never taken anyone to court over anything but this is so extreme that I am going to pursue legal action and report them as well. read more

6-4-15 I was visiting Newport on vacation when my car started making a loud, whining type noise. Thought maybe a belt was about to break. Not knowing any mechanics in town since I don't live here, I called several auto parts place and asked for a recommendation. The NAPA store recommended Steens's Automotive, a 25 year local auto repair company. I went there and was treated very well - problem instantly diagnosed, part ordered, and appt made for first thing the next morning. I went as scheduled and the part was there as promised and the car was taken right in. It ended up being one of the fluid pumps that needed to be replaced due a a worn out seal. It only took 45 minutes and the mechanic was very knowledgeable and informative as to why the noise has occurred. The office manager and shop owner (father/daughter) were very pleasant as we chatted a bit while the car was being serviced. The price was exactly half of what another shop had quoted, saving me $175 for the exact same part and installation. I hightly recommend Steens Automotive as they did a great job at a fair price and treated an out of towner like an old friend. If I lived in Newport, OR, I would always take my car here from now on. read more

Where do I begin?! This place is without a doubt the best auto repair shop I've been to in my entire life! They do just about everything here. Gina runs the place and is wonderful to deal with. I've bought a 1997 Acura and took it to Steens for inspection. The previous owner sold it because of an engine light. Gina was able to quickly diagnose the problem and fix it (02 sensors and catalytic converter). She didn't mark up the parts and charged a reasonable labor fee. Sitting in the waiting room that day (she also did a brake and transmission service for me), I saw her treat her customers with compassion, actually being an advocate for them. Steens will be getting ALL my automobile service in the future. 5 stars and HIGHLY recommended!!! read more

Took my wife's car in for servicing, One thing they did was change the oil in the differential, took it home, leaked badly, took it back in they replaced the drain plug, took it home, still leaked, took it back, told me it wasn't leaking, still leaking. I think they may have stripped the threads on the plug, won't know until I take it somewhere else to have it fixed. Took my truck in for front brakes, did fine, reasonable rates, drive it a few times, brakes went bad, took in it they said I needed entire new brake job on the rear brakes. Only problem was they were already done and had around 200 miles on them. I took it to the people who did the rear brakes and it turned out to be a brake line that broke. They fixed that and then immediately after that my Steens front brake job went bad, took it back to Steens and they said they needed to change the calipers, which they hadn't done before. To their credit they did a complete new calipers, pads and rotor for only the cost of the calipers. So far so good. Anyway, I thought I would mention the difficulties I've been having with their work for their future reference, thinking they might want to know some of their errors, that's how we learn, from our mistakes. He tells me to bring my wife's car in and they will look at it. I just said that I was done with them, not trying to be mean about it, just trying to cut my losses. The owner absolutely blew up in my face and and said he was sick and tired of my whining, whining, whining. Just really on the edge. I'm 63 years old and at my age I have had some bad experiences with mechanics, but this was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had.The owner has some serious anger issues. Whether he was trying to intentionally rip me off on the truck brake job or if it was just incompetence, there was no reason to get in my face like that. Just a few miles from our vacation rental house in Newport, our van started running rough and check engine light comes on. We drove cautiosly to the house and looked for repair services nearby. Saw some other positive reviews for Steen's and called them the next morning on our way there. We explained we were just in town on vacation and staying nearby. When we arrived they pulled the codes right away and stated likely cause. Some parts were local and others were in Salem. We agreed to bring van in when all parts were available that afternoon. When i brought it in i asked about a bus route back to the house and they offered to run me back and took the van back in. This helped us salvage some of the vacation day with the family. When they completed the repair we were over on the waterfront that we walked to. They offered to pick us up with the van and were there within 15min. The parts needed were expensive and they only repaced the problem parts but were prepared with all of them if necessary. This saved us a significant amount on an unexpected emergency repair. I feel they went above and beyond to get us up and running asap for as reasonable cost as possible. Thanks guys for helping us salvage our vacation. read more

This place is crap from what I have heard and what I have experienced. Took my car there because they do "free inspections" by plugging a computer into it. I brought my car to them on a Thursday and they said that they couldn't look at it till the next day but that they would get to it first thing. Called around 5 PM the next day and they said they couldn't get to it but that they would get to it Monday before they closed. No call Monday. Then I called around 2 PM Tuesday 6 - 7 times and no one picked up. I decided to go in and three mechanics are sitting around and and I ask if they had looked at the car. They said no and I told them to give me my keys and that I was leaving. They told me to wait a bit, then FINALLY looked at my car. Took them two minutes to tell me my catalytic converter was out. Replaced it and guess what? STILL DOESN'T WORK! Steens Master lube is a waist of time and a waist of money! Don't trust anything they say or do! read more
