    Taco Tuesday
    Andrew C.

I had an appointment in Alameda and tried to go to Black Bull Tacos down the block (https://www.yelp.com/biz/black-bull-tacos-y-cerveza-alameda) but they are closed on Tuesday's (as well as only open for dinner) so ended up at McGee's where I could satisfy my urge with Taco Tuesday (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mcgees-alameda?select=nt8gJdw8EDwkyRTnQ839XQ) I went with a trio of Steak, Grilled Fish, & Shrimp tacos (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mcgees-alameda?select=EgP8_Lpfm76xaGNwEGRkWw&userid=DsHsuhUvyyW_75zFcJxkKw) with mixed results. - Steak looked OK (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mcgees-alameda?select=eHxy5O5UuQnvlw11I7IANA), but the meat was tough and bland. - Grilled fish was nicely seasoned (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mcgees-alameda?select=VFOdrq_dvoBU3JGwyCbvwQ) The Spicy Slaw was a little odd with rings of pepperoncini. - Shrimp were a bit overcooked, but the taco had the best toppings (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mcgees-alameda?select=IykqG21WOjG5jF5IgQ80YA) The diced poblanos & salsa verde combined for the most flavorful bites on the plate. Staff were reasonably friendly, but you could see they definitely favored the regulars who came in.

It's an absolute HELL naw with a capital H! The only reason why I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because the first bartender that I had was pleasant and the two gentleman that I met there were extremely friendly. Otherwise, it would be one of those reviews that would start off with "If I could give this place zero stars, I would". Yeah, you know the drill. Walked in and instantly felt like an outcast. I mean, to the point of where I was getting stared down. Y'all know how I roll when it comes to the drinking game. I will go from the most elegant wineries to the most grungiest dive bars with no problems. I honestly really don't care as long as I'm having a good time and the drinks and food are good. Well, this place is just your typical neighborhood bar where most of the patrons are regulars. So, when you walk in and you're not known, you're gonna get the cold shoulder. Still, this didn't scare me away. I sat at the bar and ordered a margarita. I really just came to watch the last of the game, so I decided to see what this place was really all about. The first bartender that I had ended up being pretty friendly and the Margarita was decent. When I asked about food, she told me that I had to go to the kitchen to order it. I really hate when places have this kind of setup, but I got up and went to the back and ordered. Not sure if this dude was having a bad day, but the cashier was extremely rude. I ordered a hamburger and fries, glossed it over and went back to the bar. I ended up striking up a nice conversation with two gentlemen who were also watching the game. They were really friendly and told me that they had been coming to this bar for years. That kind of made me feel at ease a bit. When the food came, I already knew that it was gonna be a problem. The bun looked like those buns that come in a pack of 4 at the 99 cent store. I couldn't even see the Burger patty at first glance. I took a bite and was extremely disappointed. Overly bready, cold meat, and veggies that were not fresh. This burger was dry AF! The onions tasted nasty I honestly couldn't even finish it. The fries were also dry and cold. The food was definitely a major Miss! But what really pissed me off was the rude ass bartender who took over the other bartender's shift. I had planned to get another Margarita, but homegirl was purposely avoiding my area. Up at the bar, flirting with some regular, ignoring everyone else. When someone asked if they could get a drink, annoyance just covered her face. Look bro, this is your JOB. If you wanna make money, you need to serve the people at the bar. I finally decided that a drink was out of the picture. I wanted to finish watching the game though, so I decided to just sip on some water until the end. When the bartender finally made it over to my side of the bar, I asked her for a glass of water. She didn't say a word, just filled up the cup and place it on the counter. No straw, not even any damn ice in the cup! And then, left to the other side of the bar again. I noticed that another guy at the bar asked for water and what did this beezy do? Gave him a glass with ICE and a STRAW. That's how I know that it was intentional. I did nothing to this girl, so I don't know why I was being treated this way. I finally bounced out, never to return here again. It's just too bad because the two guys that I met were nice, but everything else going on in that place was a nightmare. Don't worry, you won't be seeing my face in there every again.

Went for drinks. I ordered a rum and coke. They're big on family and the staff is family oriented. The bathrooms were clean and there's lots of space to walk around along with lots of seating options. It's a pretty laid back atmosphere. The bartenders are attentive which is a plus in any bar because you don't have long waits. They've already gotten rid of plastic straws so expect stainless steel.

I was pleasantly surprised by McGee's; from the darkened window to the street it seemed divey. But the staff is friendly, large tables accommodated our group, and the Mexican food truck Tuesday menu was quite tasty. I also appreciated the ambiance was conducive to conversation.

    Enjoying St. Patty's green beer!

Is this place owned by Willie McGee, Oakland native and former Cardinal's baseball player?

    No.

    Is there a pool table?

No, but there is shuffleboard. They also have music - a jukebox with a lot of selections and live music once or twice a month. The Bands are really fun!

Incident: My party of 7 came to Mad Oak around 5pm on Monday evening, 7/20. I did not have my ID on hand as I didn't realize I needed it for entry. I was not planning to consume alcohol. The staff member in charge of the outdoor entry let me in anyway after a little bit of friendly back and forth. One of our friends arrived later and similarly did not have their ID. The same staff member turned them away very rudely and dismissively. I went over to the staff member to let him know that our friend was with us and I also did not have my ID. He responded very rudely despite all members of our party being very respectful. He replied me saying, "What did I tell her?! What did I tell her?!", without explanation. Our friend who was turned away identifies as they/them and without explanation from the staff member, and inconsistent application of rules pertaining to ID, I suspect it might have been a situation where our friend was unfairly discriminated against for their appearance. To sum it up, it was not clear that IDs were required for entry otherwise I would have prepared my party ahead of time; the staff member inconsistently applied an already unclear rule; he did not explain why one guest was allowed and not another, even in the same party; and lastly, he was unnecessarily rude. Our whole party ended up leaving Mad Oak to go somewhere we could all be together. In my outreach to the restaurant a couple days later, I asked for a response to let me know that they have addressed the issue and there has been no response to date.

Just brought the food and disappeared. No water was refilled without asking. Zero attention to detail Food 3.5/5 Pho combo 2 was good. Big bowl, normal amount of beef, noodles. Side of beef sprouts basil, lime and jalapeño came included. Sriracha and hoisin sauce at every table. What made the experience bad is fried calamari. It felt like they just pulled it out of a frozen bag and warmed up in a microwave. Spicy though like I like it and sauce that came with it was good. Another point for me getting full. I got a to go box (no waiter came so I had to stand up and find them to ask for it). Atmosphere is BAD. Tables stay unorganized. They are probably getting moved all the time. Feels so OUT of place like the furniture was picked up for free from some other random restaurant after getting closed. So much overhead lighting when you enter feels discomforting and underwhelming. A plus is a VIP room we went there to take a look and it was soundproof with disco and 2 TV's. Some disco equipment was getting disassembled in the far room. There is a spot for taking pics and playing darts which is cool but again everything feels so out of place. Managers were smoking outside with random friends when we came in. Super unprofessional. One of their friends at the bar was drunk and smelled with alcohol. Not coming back.

My favorite part is their collection thoughtful, balanced, complex drinks. If you want a variety of delectable old fashioneds with different spirits -- you're in luck! ---- Drinks ---- The cocktails are the main reason we keep coming back! Old Fashioned menu. They actually have several varieties and I've really appreciated how they use a different spirit for each! I won't review every single one, but you can't go wrong based on what flavor profile you want. They're all relatively sophisticated, balanced, spirit-forward, and consistently well made. The rest of the cocktail menu is equally thoughtful. Complex, creative, and well executed without trying too hard or going over the top with flavors or presentation. The food is delicious as well although we're usually just here for drinks before/after a meal. More small bites than full meals, but everything we've had has been tasty and pairs well with the drinks. We really enjoyed the empanadas; great flavor and execution. ---- Environment ---- Warm, cozy, and stylish -- but not pretentious or obnoxious. Music volume is always at a level where you can actually have a conversation, which I really appreciate! It does get busy, especially on weekends, but it's never been extreme. We've been seated immediately or only with a short wait most times. ---- Service ---- Friendly, welcoming, and attentive! Always had good experiences with the staff even when busy. Most of them have good recommendations. ---- Tips ---- Make a reservation if you can! Walk-ins are definitely possible, though you may end up sharing a larger communal table. We've done it before and honestly didn't mind. The bathroom can occasionally have a bit of a wait. ---- Overall ---- Love this place. It's become our go-to spot whenever we're in the mood for great cocktails and a relaxed evening and want a reliable experience. One of my favorite cocktail bars in Alameda.

I know better now to just order my food to-go if I crave it again. The customer service is never what you expect it to be. They also don't mention that they are ready to help you and just stare at you waiting for you to start ordering. Maybe I am picky and selective, but I usually don't approach after someone's ordering in case they need to quickly step away or finish the task they were working on -- I'm use to being called "next" or being acknowledged. They also don't give you a number or some sort of marker after they take your order, so it is easy for them to mix up orders which happened. Anyway, the food is always good and so I guess that will have to make up for the experience. The garlic noodles with salt and pepper tofu never miss and always hit. It's never too greasy or underflavored. The spicy korean wings are super good and flavorful too. Not too spicy, definitely a mildness to it, so you can handle it if you don't like something too spicy. Overall, I'd come back to pick up a to-go order, but I won't dine in person again.
