Just had dinner there with my sisters and had such a fun time. The food, service and ambiance is outstanding! Everything comes together really well because it's a small restaurant that can deliver great service on every level. It's quality service and not about quantity. Talk about Customer service... they all work like a team, including the manager who is very much part of the team and works as a team member , all of them have great friendly attitudes, which makes a difference to the whole dining experience. They have a good variety of food options and drinks and everything I've ever ordered has been very deelish!!! My favorites are... scarlet cocktail, the Cesar salad, duck confit and tonight I had the waygu skewers, one sister had the branzino and the other sister had the burger... and she ate the whole thing ( which is unusual) and we also had two desserts, the chocolate bar and a raspberry thing... we loved them all!! Walked in at 8pm on a Saturday night after grabbing drinks with friends at The Rake down the block. It was busy, but for two, we still got seated immediately without a res! My boyfriend ordered the peanut butter old fashioned. He loved it. I'm not a whiskey girl so I can't say much about it other than it was strong. But my boyfriend could taste the PB. For mains, I got the Caesar salad with bouquerones and grilled chicken. I'd skip the bouquerones and keep the chicken. I actually love anchovies, and these taste good. But you get 4 half filets and they're extremely tiny. For that reason, I think the chicken is far more worth your $. My boyfriend got the saltbreaker burger- a double patty with really good mushrooms. However I'd say the French fries stole the show!! We also shared a special dessert. I can't remember the name or all the flavor profiles but the dessert was so unique and unlike anything I'd ever had. I know rose was a flavor and I don't remember a matcha/hojicha in the description but there was this really nice earthiness. Made reservations for a Friday night at 7:30pm and came in at 7:27pm, and they were wrapping up with a table, so we waited about 10 minutes. The restaurant was busy and had indoor and outdoor seating. We sat inside and the decorations were aesthetically pleasing with the fake plants and the green color furniture. It was a bit oily but really good with the butter and garlic) -Butter Poached Steak (it was good, but I do recommend to eat it right away before it gets cold. Wish the piece was a bit bigger! The best food in Alameda! My fiancé and I are regulars at Saltbreaker, usually stopping in every other week and it's easily one of our favorite spots. Some of our go-to menu items are the focaccia, cheese soufflé, cast iron chicken, steak frites, and the cheesecake. We love sitting at the bar enjoying a drink made by the best bartender on the island, Mike. Wishing they would bring back our favorite drink, Mike's Negroni! We recently booked the annex to host our engagement party for about 30 guests, and the experience was fantastic. The service from Emily and Cam was amazing from start to finish, and we received so many compliments from our friends and family about the food and overall atmosphere. Saltbreaker has become one of our favorite dinner places in Alameda. We came in during Alameda restaurant week recently, and enjoyed the food so much that we've returned several times since. The menu is pescatarian-friendly, which is a huge plus for me. We order the smoked trout rillette every time. Their fresh pasta is also delicious. I definitely want to try the whole branzino one of these days. The service is attentive and refined. The ambiance is classy and upscale but unpretentious. Highly recommend getting a reservation! We didn't have one but were able to get seated at the communal table. The food was delicious and we didn't have to wait too long. I don't mind communal tables but there was maybe just one too many chairs there. I was asked to move down by one of the servers because another customer had the table leg between his legs but I couldn't move more than an inch because there was another party on our other end. Our group was seated in the middle of the table so on one side we had to maneuver between guests and the wall to get to our seats which was pretty cramped. I never would have never visited Saltbreaker if it weren't for restaurant week. I feel like I've probably seen it on Yelp years ago, but it seemed to be out of my budget as a college student and I don't typically go out of my way to eat American food. When my boyfriend and I were looking through the catalog of restaurants, the Uni Carbonara on the menu caught our eye. We've been on an uni kick recently. We made a reservation for 6:45 pm on a Thursday. I think it was more crowded than usual because of restaurant week, but it still wasn't too bad. When my boyfriend reserved a slot, the only seating left for the 6:45 time slot was the bar. We actually preferred it because we got lucky that we got seated at the tail end at the bar near the kitchen. It was spacious enough from the other parties since we were on the edge, and it was fun watching the food leave the kitchen and catching a whiff of it. Once we got settled, our server was attentive and was ready to take our order. My boyfriend and I ordered the savory cheese soufflé, uni carbonara (a la carte), steak frites, and banoffee chocolate tart (a la carte). Our server asked if we wanted anything to come out in a particular order which I thought was very considerate. We requested that the savory cheese soufflé be served first. Cheese Soufflé- We really enjoyed the cheese soufflé and I loved how the salad was dressed with lemon which gave the greens a nice tartness. The greens sat on top of a dollap of jam. The sweetness of the jam surprisingly worked well with the cheesy soufflé. Maybe this shouldn't have surprised me too much, because cheese and jam are commonly seen together in charcuterie boards. Next, the steak frites and uni carbonara came out at the same time. Steak Frites - The steak was more on the rare/medium-rare side, which I'm not too used to, but I liked that the steak was super tender. I'm sure we could have asked the server for a particular cook on the meat, but I just didn't think to. The steak was solid -- wasn't mind blowing, but the flavor was better than the steaks I've had from other restaurants. The frites were on the hard side for me. Uni Carbonara - We thought the uni carbonara was pretty good. We saw a review saying that it was underwhelming so we didn't have high expectations for this one, but still wanted to give it a try. If you're looking for a very uni forward pasta, this dish might not be your cup of tea because you will be underwhelmed. There was only one piece of uni on top. It wasn't bitter and melted in my mouth, which was good, but it also didn't have much flavor to it. If you are coming for a good carbonara with a twist to it, I think this one is solid. The pasta was al dante and the carbonara was flavored wonderfully from the saltiness of the guanciale to the slight spice from the chili crisp. I also really enjoyed the pop in my mouth from the masago, the freshness from the sauce around it, and the creaminess of the pasta. I did enjoy this dish, but wish there was more uni as the name suggests. Banofee Chocolate Tart - This dessert was delicious. This might be my favorite banana dessert I've had in a while. The slightly tart banana confit with the sugary caramelized bananas and ice cream was my favorite comboWOW! I feel like this dessert captured the true essence of banana and made it the star of the show. The only thing that would've made it better was if the chocolate tart wasn't as hard and dry. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Saltbreaker. The food was yummy and the service was excellent. My boyfriend and I thought it was pricey for the portions. We paid about $60 a person including tip, and only left 60% full. I'm glad I got to try this place, but not sure if I would come again to try their other menu items. If I could, I would knock 0.5 of a star down for my rating due to the value of this place. read more

Although the set $50 pre fixe menu sounded appetizing, it would've been too much food for everyone to have their own set so we opted to order a salad and the dessert a la carte off the menu, skipping over the uni pasta main course. Service, drinks, and food here are all fantastic. Our server was attentive to our party throughout our meal, drinks were well-balanced, and food was delivered from the kitchen at a nice pace. The appetizers here all sounded so good, we had a difficult time deciding which ones to order. Ultimately, we settled on two -- the burrata and the savory cheese souffle. I thoroughly enjoyed the burrata appetizer. The grilled sourdough they serve with the dish is thick cut and stands up well to the creaminess of the burrata. The subtle sweetness from the fried shallot garnish is a welcomed addition and contrasts nicely with the char from the sourdough. The savory cheese souffle is rich, airy, and demonstrates a lot of technique. If you've never had a savory cheese souffle before, think of a Starbucks egg bite, but one that's 50x better in every way imaginable. Of all the dishes I had a chance to try out, the steak frites was the star of the show. The steak was cooked perfectly. I loved how tender the shallot demi-glace coated beef was, and tarragon aioli on the side were a perfect pairing for both the steak and the shoestring fries. Whether or not you choose to participate in the Restaurant Week specials, Saltbreaker offers a wonderful dining experience that's well worthy of a date-night. read more

Much needed update. Not sure what changed but during restaurant week we hit this place a few times and even after restaurant week was over. So what has changed from my first review. Well you can actually get there driving on a paved street instead of dirt construction zones. It seems the wine list has been updated along with the menu. The Trout Rillette is still on the menu which is excellent. Also the cheese souffle and pasta is incredible. And I'm not a pasta guy. The drinks are great and periodically they have a special cocktail on the menu. The service is great and above that when you walk in without a reservation they really work at fitting you in. If we stay on the island this is one of the top spots. I would like them to open earlier and stay open later. I think the demand is there. read more

The front of the restaurant was hard to find. It's tucked in between the warehouses next to Humble Sea but is separate from it. The interior was light-filled and modern. It's a nicer restaurant than the surrounding breweries for celebrations and date nights. They have a private backroom you can rent as well. The drinks were delicious - I particularly liked the Peanut Butter Old Fashioned (Four Roses, Vanilla, Cacao Angostura Bitters). Someone else ordered a Freezer Martini which was basically a really cold martini. The food was upscale bar food. We ordered the smoked trout rillette and burrata with olive tapenade. We love this restaurant, the food is delicious, the cocktails are stellar, the service friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy and beautiful. We've tried the majority of their menu over many visits with various group sizes. We're happy for them and sad for ourselves that it's gotten much harder to walk in and score a table. Don't sleep on their specials... they're always amazing. We've had the trout app, focaccia, several variations of the daily crudo, market salad, Caesar salad (so good), burger (one of the better burgers I've had), pork belly sando, steak (I don't like tarragon and I still love this steak), chicken, variety of their fresh pastas, and several of their veggie sides (don't miss the potato gratin). Dinner! So, our friends invited us to dinner. They suggested Saltbreaker in Alameda and we met them there on a Friday night. There's plenty of parking out front but you have to ignore the Restricted Parking Signs that say a permit is required. I parked in the area south of the restaurant which was probably parking for the building next door. Whatever. The place was hopping when we walked in. Staff and customers were all apparently smiling which is always a good sign. We took our seats, ordered drinks and perused the menu. We also looked at the specials board which offered one app, one entree, one dessert and one beverage. There's one photo below that is unlabeled because I can't remember what it was but I'm reasonably sure it was the Special Appetizer of the Day. Service was great. It was definitely a team effort. Ambiance was appropriate for a place with a full bar and lots of diners. The meal flow was excellent. Portions were not huge but sufficient for sharing. Pricing was reasonable. Flavors ran from good to excellent. There were no failures. I found the Crispy Potato Gratin to be particularly good. It looks like three simple blocks of potatoes, but the outside was super crispy and the inside, super fluffy. Add a little onion and chive cream to the bite and it's a winner!
