DRY REDS. *** Seriously, some of the best reds in the FLX. *** We had an awesome experience. A keuka college student gave us a tasting, which was sit-down style, and told us all about the wines we'd be tasting, especially their interesting and unique varietals and blends. *** Their best is the 2013 Black Russian Red 36-month Barrel Reserve- we left with a few of them. They're $70, but perhaps the FL's best. Unique, fresh and unlike anything you'd find in the US. It's a saperavi & sereksiya (only ones in the US who grow this varietal) blend with blackberry and black tea notes. It left me very impressed. Bits of dark cranberry and black currant as well. This is steak wine at its (New World) best. *** Second place goes to the Cabernet Sauvignon, in this case the 2014 vintage. Aromatic, dark cherry and blackberry. Fruity while still being heavy, dark and bold. Bought this too. **** 2014 Rob Red is a meritage blend that holds up with other Fl places. Summary: Quaint, beautiful tasting room with the best view and most unique red wines in the area. Wine: The whites that we tried were OK, but they had some really cool red wines made with grapes we've never heard of (some Russian varietals) that were AMAZING. Probably some of the best reds we tried our whole trip. We would highly recommend getting your hands on some of those reds if you can find them. Ambiance/View: Probably the best view of Keuka Lake from any place we visited! The tastings don't happen at a normal bar, but at little tables, which was a nice home-y feel to the experience. They also have a restaurant which seemed to have a bigger space and number of tables than the tasting area. In the middle of the tasting area is a cute store filled with locally made items for sale if you want to do some shopping. Education: The tasting room staff were very friendly and did share a bit of history to go with our wines, but the vast majority of the information shared with us was printed and in a binder in the middle of the tasting table. This wasn't my favorite way to consume that kind of information, but my husband loved that he didn't have to bother someone to learn to his heart's content. Other: The tastings here come with a snack plate, which was unique and quite cool! We enjoyed our plate a lot, and even ended up purchasing some of the snack items to go with the wine we bought. read more

This winery is beautiful! The ambiance is so pretty and the views of Keuka Lake are amazing! We had a really great tasting for $5 which included a glass and our choice of 5 wines! I loved the fact that we could pick which 5 wines we wanted. They gave us complementary cheese and crackers and even brought water for my kids! Had a great experience! We were here on a snowy afternoon and they did a very good job practicing distancing and everyone had masks on. They seated us away from the one other table that had a party. Our host was very knowledgeable about the wines and came to check in on us multiple times (while respecting our privacy at the same time). LOVED the wines here and landed up buying some too. My girlfriends and I went on a wine tour yesterday for a bachelorette party. After two tastings they stopped serving us and we were wondering what was going on... one of us had asked what was going on and the lady said we "were visibly intoxicated" and that they would not be serving us the rest of our tastings. Honestly pretty disappointing considering we had already paid for the tasting. None of us were acting out of control whatsoever. We all sat in our seats and waited for the next wine while having conservations inside our tables. Not really sure what their problems were but I will definitely not be returning to this winery. Such a disappointment. Would rather be at Bully Hill anyways. Edited to add: apparently there were other factors that led to us being "kicked out" that we were NOT made aware of. But whatever, like I said earlier.... will not be returning. Ever. read more

I wish I could give zero stars for McGregor Vineyard. We had planned a trip upstate from the city at the beginning of summer for months beforehand and ended up getting a camping site nearby because we found McGregor online and wanted to check it out. The website looked wonderful and it seemed like a friendly place, so we made plans to go visit. Little did we know it would be the most disappointing place and we'd leave without even trying their wine. We arrived on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in June and when we walked in, there were only two other couples that were seated in the tasting room. When we walked in, a hostess asked us if we'd like to do a tasting, to which we replied excitedly, "yes!" and she told us to have a seat anywhere that we liked and that someone would be right with us. We sat down next to a couple who was already drinking some wine and we looked over the menu of choices. We quickly decided what we wanted and sat waiting to be helped with menus closed. Meanwhile, the couple next to us was readily served while their waitress kept glancing over at us and giving us side eye. We weren't really sure what we did wrong, but we continued to wait. After about fifteen minutes of us sitting and patiently waiting (and the couple next to us having gotten their third serving of wine AND a cheese plate), a group of about 6 people came in, walked past us, and were immediately seated. Within a minute of sitting down, they had wine in their hands and were being helped and laughing with the waitress. Of course, we still had no wine and were still waiting. After almost twenty minutes of not being helped, I got up to go to the bathroom, which means I had to walk through the gift shop. My partner ended up doing the same and while he was in the bathroom after me, I was browsing the gift shop. Someone who worked there came out to check on me, but didn't ask me if I needed help, and they disappeared. It was like they were just watching me, expecting that I was going to rob them or steal something. Needless to say, we weren't welcome, so we left. I think this speaks for itself. I'm not sure what we did wrong. We seemed to follow their exact directions about getting helped, but it's as if they saw us and thought we weren't good enough for their place or their wine. Well, the joke is on them. We ended up going to this other winery nearby called Ravines Wine Cellar within a mile of McGregor. When we got there, we were immediately served wine (and it was a free glass!) and welcomed into their space. We had planned on joining a wine club on this visit and were hoping to join McGregor Vineyard's, but we instead joined Ravines Wine Cellar's (the Ravinous Wine Club). As I sit here writing this review of McGregor, I'm drinking Ravines wine from our first shipment; and it's some damn good wine. McGregor surely missed out on our business and I hope if you're in the area and thinking of McGregor that you go visit Ravines instead; it's just down the road. read more

Just wasted a half hour sitting at a dirty table where we were totally and completely ignored. They looked at us a few times... but no one bothered to actually speak to us or offer us any service. It's Monday morning, and although there were people here, it was not overly busy. We finally walked out, and again, nothing was said. There is way too much competition here for that kind of service. We have spent a minimum of $100 at every winery we have visited, and we will be happy to go spend it somewhere other than here. read more

While the winery may be a little out of the way, the wines are definitely worth it. In my opinion, McGregor has the best red wines offered in the entire Finger Lakes Region. My son and I have purchased many cases after attending some of the events held specifically for their wine club members, especially the candlelight red wine barrel tastings. Stop in and sample them. McGregor Vineyard is one of the best wineries of the Finger Lakes! There wines are exceptional. I haven't met a McGregor's wine that is not. If you like dry red wine you must try their top of the line Black Russian. The tasting experience is very unique. There is no standing at the tasting bar to do your tasting. They provide large picnic type tables to sit at and the pourers come to you. You get friendly personal service. I have been a clan member for several years. As clan members we get invited to special events such as the red and white barrel tastings. Visit them! You won't be sorry! read more

My wife and I explored the wineries and vineyards of the Finger Lakes region and agreed that McGregor was the very best. For the lower-cost wines, their chardonnay and rose cabernet franc were terrific. On the higher end, their Black Russian Red Reserve was sublime and in my opinion, the very best wine offered anywhere in the region. Tastings are accompanied by small pairing snacks, they have food options other than your standard meats and cheeses, the staff is friendly and the views are mesmerizing. Love this place! read more

McGregor's offers exceptional wine at reasonable prices and the view from the tasting rooms and front deck is beautiful. What sets this winery apart for us is the relaxed atmosphere and the welcoming, friendly staff. We have enjoyed our visits there so much that we became members last year. A nice change of pace to the typical tasting. You get a table and a cheese/ cracker plate. The glass is complementary and they have wines from $9 to $60, something for everyone. Probably the most fun winery that we stopped at on the trail. Staff was funny and friendly and the whole place just seemed to have a sense of humor about it. I also just really like the environment of this place, it felt fun and comfortable at the same time. In a region known for sweet white wines, the Highlands Red here is actually pretty good. It was the only decent red I had the whole trip...might not be the best compliment, but I brought home a bottle and enjoyed it a few months later as well. Snacks served with the tasting were also delicious. The garlic and herb cheese was so awesome we had to buy a bag of it to take with us. Definitely a must do if you are in the area. read more

If you're a fan of big reds, McGregor is a must! The Black Russian Red is a standout, but Rob Roy holds it own, and even their value-priced Highland Red is quaffable. Keuka Lake passport holders each get 5 wines to taste, so we chose four whites in addition to the 6 reds on the list and worked our way up to the big wines. To my knowledge, this is the only winery offering a seated tasting, and it was a true delight to sit in the fall sunshine sampling wines along with the complimentary snack plate. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and we found that over an hour had passed before we knew it. Pro tips: Avoid busy holiday weekends, and be prepared for outdoor toilets. Really. They're working on installing a septic system, but for now your only option is porta-potties. read more

This vineyard is so unique. Their front porch was gorgeous. I could have sat out there all day if I wasn't with a group with a time limit. I also noticed it was dog friendly. The inside had a huge sun room for seating and sipping. I really enjoyed their style of wine tasting. You get a private table facing your friends, they bring you small snacks, and they go around the table and take your tasting order like you were in a restaurant. It was so refreshing. You could speak to everyone there without facing a weird way or only hearing part of a conversation because they were half way down a bar. The gift shop was super cute. I wanted to buy everything. In particular there was a pesto dip they served that I purchased. I believe most people in my group bought a container! The girls serving us were very friendly. They knew their facts about their wines but didn't bombard us with knowledge. This was more of a relaxing wine tasting and I loved it. My favorite wine was their last harvest vignoles. I would love to come back and sit on that porch. read more

They both have catering with Timber Stone Grill and the food is amazing. The wines are superb and the owner and employees very accomadating. The views from the deck of Keuka Lake are awesome. I have visited McGregor's Winery 3 times on trips to the Finger Lakes. It is my favorite winery in the Keuka/Seneca Lakes region. I haven't been there in a couple years, but continue to enjoy their wines through mail order. Yes, the winery is beautiful. Sitting at a higher point than most area wineries, there is a fantastic view of Keuka Lake. Yes, their wines are dry. If you're in the mood for typical cheap party-fare, go buy some Red Cat. McGregor's wines are created from some grapes unique to the area. My favorite is a white called Rkatsiteli-Sereksiya, made from two Eastern European grapes. It's tart, tasty, and so much fun to say. Rkatsiteli is said to be the oldest known wine-making grape in the world. Sereksiya is a grape also used to make a couple of their reds. Lovely wines for those wanting something dry and different. I have had children with me each time I've visited. They were treated kindly, and even given a complimentary glass of grape juice. It's an intimate, relaxing environment, in which you can sit and take your time. read more

I don't really remember anything about the wine per say, which isn't the greatest of endorsements for a winery but the food they paired the wines with, their rubs and their sauces were to die for. We bought a couple wines but we bought a ton of food stuffs like the pesto spread, the chipotle meat rub, the chipotle dressing and we have enjoyed every send of it. I wish I didn't live in California so that I could get more. Different than the other wineries. Sit down tasting with food and you keep the glass, $5. They have many wines from sweet late-harvest wines to the Black Russian Red that sells for $59. We have stopped by before, but usually during events, so this was out first "sit-down" tasting. Taster Chance, who isn't yet old enough to sample himself, led us through. He's just getting started so I hope visiting wine snobs aren't too rough on him. Chance poured the wines we wanted and answered any questions. Stop by and give McGregor a try. I've seen the picture of Mr. McGregor and his son on the tractor (circa 1973) on many a Finger Lakes brochure, and wanted to experience the place, and I'm glad I did. As others have stated, it's a different tasting experience - you sit down, as if you're at a restaurant. Those who are not prepared for that and expect (and insist) on a traditional "stand at the tasting counter" experience may be disappointed. Several such people were and left in a huff when they were told they had to wait about 20 minutes for a table.... We waited..there was plenty to see inside the gift shop, and plenty to taste (rubs and sauces aplenty, similar to Cobblestone on Cayuga Lake). (Note: you are given an opportunity to sit at a table with a bunch of strangers, if your group is small and there is a table that has room; some people would have no problem with this....we preferred to wait). When you take a seat, you choose the wines you wish to try from their menu (you can try up to 6....so they say. We were able to try eight). Our server was hilarious, I was pretty sloshed by the time I got to McGregor so I can't remember his name. All wines were fine, but again, by this time the wines were all starting to taste alike. The Cab Franc apparently was great as one person in my party bought a bottle and she's extremely critical of Finger Lake reds. The signage to this location is adequate but a map certainly helps. It's up on a hill and there are nice views of the lake. But plan to stay awhile....... read more

Unfortunately I had a very unpleasant experience here. My family and I came here to celebrate my birthday with a reservation made. When we arrived we were met with a nice girl who took care of us at the start. She offered me a tasting of a wine before I had a full glass. While she went to the back to get it, another lady came up and asked us with a rude tone what we were doing. I told her we were waiting for the wine sample and she acted like they don't do that. I told her someone was already taking care of us but she insisted that she to check on them. Before hand she had asked me for my ID, which of course I was expecting. I was displeased when she spent a good 2 minutes looking at it like she didn't believe my age and was almost looking at it like it was a fake. After that she had asked me what the other girl was getting me and basically tried to talk me out of getting it when I was certain I would like it. She acted like I didn't know what I would like and that I had to get what she was suggesting. After my dad had asked if they do cheese platters, which they do, but the lady proceeded to say there are blocks of cheese behind you in the fridge you can grab, basically just not wanting to help him order. It was a beautiful winery dont get me wrong, but that one lady was very distasteful and made me feel so unwelcomed. I would like to try it again with hopefully some better service! read more

The reason for the missing stars is difficult to explain.... The vineyard is beautiful - setting is magnificent, with great views and several excellent wines. i loved the fact we were invited to sit at a table and were offered cheese, crackers and chocolate to enjoy with the wine tasting. Really nice. We purchased a case and were tempted to join their wine club. It was explained that the way the club works is that you get the two wines they choose, every other month, with the option to "fill your case" with whatever additional wines you want, with free shipping. That appealed to me. I said, "Sign me up!" But after consulting with the owner, the sales person returned to the register and said, "I'm sorry, but the policy has changed. The option to "fill your case," is only available for old members of the club. It doesn't apply to new members." Well, I purchased my case, but did not join the club. I know myself - If given the opportunity to "fill my case" every other month, I would have purchased six cases per year. I now have a bad taste in my mouth and will likely spend my wine dollars elsewhere. There is a lot of competition in the area - great wines are not hard to come by in the Finger Lakes..... read more

Decent wines. Not a fan of red, but we splurged on a $ l45.00 bottle of Rob Roy. It was that good! Whites to me were just ok. Not my favorite winery in the area, you sit down at a table while you are tasting which is a bit of a pain. They do give you some finger foods to eat while you are tasting which is nice. The tasting room is pretty small, so you have to act like a grownup and not be overly loud or you will get some pretty nasty looks from the other, more mature parties in the room.
