I'm super late adding this review but it's so memorable I can still so clearly recall our wine tasting experience at Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard. Well, aside from our wine guide's name, (I'M SO SORRY) who was EXCELLENT and made what would have been a lost group of women wanting to get lit to an educational experience but ALSO a great time. He curated a list of several white wines in carafes for us to learn and practice different tasting notes. I have never had a wine tasting like this and have never had one like this again, yet. Hopefully that will change during my Napa trip this month! The outdoor seating area is beautiful and green without getting too noisy, and perfect for big groups. There's also a large unending field of grapes - which we definitely posed for an ungodly amount of photos in front of. Hermann J. Wiemer is definitely a wine institution well deserving of all the accolades that I will be visiting again next time I'm in upstate New York! read more

Stop #3 of our wine tour on a Sunday. Felt like a more upscale place. I had made reservations for a tasting a week in advance mainly spitballing what kind of a timeframe we would be on. It would figure that they don't take as long and we were about an hour ahead of schedule. They allowed us to go earlier than our booked time which was nice. It's easy to see why this place made the Top 100 Wineries list of 2023 - the space is elegant, peaceful, and full of Finger Lakes magic. They've shifted from custom flights to a set tasting lineup, which during our visit included Flower Day, HJW Vineyard Riesling, Dry Rosé, and Cabernet Franc. Thanks to the very chill and helpful staff guy, we got to sneak in the HJW Bio Riesling too - and I'm so glad we did. That one ended up being my favorite: bright, expressive, and super well-balanced! Gf loved the Flower Day Riesling, while the 2022 Cabernet Franc was easy to sip and rounded out the tasting beautifully. Hermann Wiemer has one of the best wineries on lake Seneca in my opinion. They consistently make a beautiful Riesling among other options. We came in a Saturday in the fall and had reservations for a tasting. Victor was informative and warm. He helped us decide on our tasting flight. Very beautiful winery and fantastic service. This was our first winery we stopped at on a Saturday celebrating my birthday. The ambiance is traditional farm style and was decorated for Fall with many pumpkins, gourds, and topiary. The gentleman that took care of us was friendly, very informative, and curated our wine tastings to our preferred palate. No other winery we stopped at was so personal, pours were generous and the wines smooth and ranged from semi dry to dry with our tasting. My friend brought me here for a private tasting for my birthday. It was held in the library I believe (I think some of the vineyards around here still want a reservation thanks covid they are keeping it, some you can still roll in but check if possible) The place is really nice, I get the feeling they did an update and it's light and bright and airy. When you walk in it's all warm woods and tables and huge metal vessels for the wines. We saw some people having a tasting here and they have tables and etc. The other room we were I what light and bright. The light coming in was glorious. We were given a glass of wine that was gratis a nice touch. I believe the tasting is for four 2.5 pours and they have other pours as well. I don't know the cost off hand but check the website. You can mix and match what you want to try. So I got some white and a Pinot. Everything I tried was either stellar or something I'd need to try again. Our guide today was warm & knowledgeable and casual. Just an fyi they have a sister vineyard called Standing Stone (I believe it's called) and they make good wines as well. I enjoyed my visit here. Update! Revisited during a recent trip to the FLX area. The tasting has certainly changed since my COVID-time visit, but still excellent wine. We didn't receive as excellent of hospitality this time around (not that it was bad, just not as one-on-one as my previous visit), but that could also be mostly a function of it being busier and the world traveling more. We appreciated the way they do tastings with the small carafes and the chalkboard to know what you're trying. Our server did walk us through the wines and checked in on us enough to make us feel taken care of! It was just a different vibe this time around. The wine was still some of the finest we had during our trip! HJW is certainly known for their reisling which still is their star, and I'm excited my husband got to try them out. This was one of our favorite experiences while visiting the finger lakes. The inside of the facility is really nice, and it was a nice day when we visited so we actually got to sit outside near some of their stainless steel barrels. The wine were all fabulous, and our server was so sweet and informative. They didn't mind that we had our own snacks during the tasting. I learned a lot of the area and their wines during this tasting. They offer a cool concept as well, where you can buy single tastings or larger pours to share, which saves a little money and is fun to go through the tasting with your group. Our server wanted to share another wine with us and brought us that for free! You can also buy wine by the glass or bottle as well. I highly recommend this awesome spot! read more

This was our first stop for the day and in the off season it was easy to be seated and have a comfortable and well informed wine tasting. It is all à la carte so it can be pricey depending on what you have. The history of the winery was very interesting! Booked a tasting and glad we had made a reservation because this place was packed on a late Saturday afternoon. They do tastings a little differently compared to most places in the FLX - larger pours that are shared between 2-3 people. Not necessarily a bad thing especially if the people sharing it like the same sweetness of wine, but you can see how this could also be problematic. Because it was so crowded, the area for tasting got a little loud and it was hard to hear our server explain the characteristics of the wines we were sampling. Beautiful location! A girls weekend in the off-season in the Finger Lakes and this amazing spot was 500 feet from our house! We opted for the self-guided wine tasting on the side of the building overlooking the vineyard. We enjoyed the dry Rieslings. Would recommend if you have had lots of wine tastings and would like to pick a couple and enjoy and talk amongst your group. (Our only concern- The gnats! On a recent trip to the Finger Lakes with some friends, we had looked up prominent vineyards to go to, and Hermann J. Wiemer was at the top of most of the lists we had looked at and we decided that we had to scope it out. Upon driving to the vineyard, the grounds are absolutely stunning. The building itself has a modern flair, and the inside of the venue is open with an abundance of natural light. On our trip, we had visited 10+ wineries and Hermann was in the top 2 as far as the views. Hermann's wine offerings range from a variety of Rieslings, Gruners, Cab Francs. They offer 3 different sizes, but my friends and I opted to get a variety of smaller sizes to try the different wines. Having been to other wineries and having tried a large array of dry rieslings, we weren't particularly impressed with the rieslings, but we loved the Gruner Veltlinger. The gentleman that served us was incredibly knowledgeable and had us try a few other wines that we had not ordered on the house. As we finished tasting some wines, we asked if we could purchase a bottle and walk the grounds of the winery. Our waiter was extremely kind and allowed us to do so, which made the experience fun as we explored more of the winery. Overall, the venue was beautiful and our service was amazing. My friends and I didn't find the wines extremely memorable, but we would definitely return to visit just for the scenery and the ability to walk around. read more

We were greeted fine and showed us are seats and got our welcome pour . Still all good . After a half hour of sitting there we didn't get a person to our table to great Us . She didn't seem to care too much , went back a week later to talk to someone about our experience . And the greater didn't give me a manager ,m. I called the day before to arrange picking up a case of wine and was told they opened at 10am the next morning. We got there just a bit after 10 and despite the sign on the door that said they opened at 10am they did not. Finally at 10:30 they opened up. After those with tasting reservations got processed we proceeded to purchase our case of wine. After it was rung up I noticed that the price was incorrect - in our favor by $150!!!! I could have walked away but I pointed it out. The manager came over and helped the worker correct the issue. Here is the rub - the manager never thanked me for catching their mistake. This was the best winery we went to by far on our trip to the Finger Lakes. We started off the day here and it set the bar super high. We had our own private spot out on the quiet patio surrounded by trees and shade with the sun peeking through. The wine was superior to anything else we had the rest of the day. We got to choose our own selection of wines from a sizable list, the dry Rieslings being some of our favorites. We really loved the Gewurztraminer and 2023 rose as well. But what truly stole the show was rhetorical 2014 Josef Riesling. Seeing that it came from a $150+ bottle meant it better be good, but the lingering smell and after taste was truly unforgettable. My friends hyped this place up and I can say it was a disappointing visit. First off, be sure to have a reservation! My party of 4 did not and the lady running the counter made us feel bad about it, like it was an inconvenience. The room for walk-in tastings was pretty empty so, not sure why we were given an attitude. 3 of us had a flight, which is a flight of preselected wines. No interaction regarding the wines on the flight other than the paper they give you to go along with it. Also, they give you what is supposed to be enough wine for each person to sample from the mini carafe. Looking around the room at other guest's flight carafes...a flight for 2 people were filled to the same level as our flight for 3 people...not sure how that is right. Not in a rush to go back here but would be curious if the experience would be better with a reservation. read more

We stopped on a warm and sunny Saturday. It was pretty crowded being Labor Day weekend. No trouble parking. We had our glasses of wine in hand in no time and a nice gentleman who worked there pointed us to a lovely patio and porch across the driveway where we were able to drink our wine away from the crowd. We were super disappointed from the moment we walked in here. Around us we saw others served with glasses of water while we were given plastic cups. We came here after family had recommended this place, they having also just walked in without reservation. However, when we came we were met with passive aggressive comments about not having a reservation despite the website saying it's not required. read more

I stopped by a number of wineries when in the area and was looking forward to this one. I was disappointed that this experience didn't feel as interactive and personal as the other places I went. I wasn't given conversation about the wines from my server, Neil. Their pours are also individually priced unlike other wineries at which mostly the price is for a set number of pours regardless of what you taste. Also, what I did try wasn't pleasing to my taste but I assume that was just that I ordered the wrong things secondary to the lack of conversation around the wine. read more

I really, really enjoyed the wines here. We came on a Tuesday afternoon and the place appeared to be fully booked with reservations - so we were glad we had one. This was definitely the best wine of our day wine tasting, and the whole property is very classy and beautiful. Everything is served a la carte, so while it was nice getting to pick exactly what we wanted, it didn't feel like a particularly curated or guided experience. Our server was nice but mainly left it to us to ask questions or ask for recommendations. All tastings are accompanied with popcorn and nuts, which were nice - but some curated cheese boards would've really bumped up the experience. We left with a bottle of their Late Harvest Riesling and Gewürztraminer. There actually wasn't a wine we disliked, which made it very difficult to choose which wines to purchase! Also, by the time you've tried 4-5 wines it ends up costing more than any other winery's tastings- but there is certainly a quality difference. We planned Hermann J. Wiemer vineyard as our last stop on our wine tasting trip, because we wanted to end our trip on a high note. I came here with a group of friends last year and did the traditional wine tasting. Our host was very knowledgeable and took us through each of the wines that we were tasting. It was such a memorable experience that I had to come back again, this time with my husband. This year with COVID happening, the winery is not doing its traditional wine tasting, so that was disappointing. Instead, wines were being offered by the glass, half glass, or bottle. My husband and I ended up sharing a flight of wines by the half glass including the Riesling Magdalena 2018, the Riesling HJW Bio 2017, the Dry Rosé 2019, Cab Franc 2018, and the Standing Stone Farm Red. The flight of wines came with small bowls of popcorn and almonds that were nice to munch on. The Rieslings were very lovely, but the reds not so much. I would recommend sticking to the white wines. read more

Herman Weimer and Dr. Franks wineries are the two most elite wineries in the FL. This is a must-do stop on your wine tour!! Make reservations in far in advance, it is sometimes sold out it's that good! It's a lovely date place. It's a super classy place with a staff that is very well educated and the wine is superior. Try their 2023 dry Riesling wine, it's awesome. As you're driving down the road it's easy to miss, they should put some another sign or two out before the entrance so people don't drive by and miss it. read more

A great way to start a day of wine tastings, we were fortunate to get a table outside on the patio. Unlike most of the vineyards all tastings are a la carte where you chose your wines from a list with each having a different price. Rebecca was a great guide in explaining each of the offerings with some of the notes of each wine and the history of the vines and process of the wine making. When spending a day looking for that excellent wine the experience of the tastings are as important as the wines and Rebecca made that experience enjoyable. With her direction we chose 2.5 oz pours to share. Note if you are sharing 4 or 5 of these carafes you will be drinking about a glass of wine each. Figure that into your driving for the day if you are going to a number of tastings. We highly recommend making this one of your stops. read more
