The seven miles of the PA part of this trail are very nice and suitable for narrow tire road race bike as well as hybrid or mountain bikes with wider tires. The three miles of the Ohio side are VERY rough with several sections with serious frost heaves that would make it way too uneven for a narrow tire / high psi inflation road race bike. This trail has a lot of rolling hills that make it more challenging than a standard bike trail that has been constructed on an old railroad bed. According to other information available online this trail was constructed along a electric trolley rail bed so this is why there are more ups and downs to the trail. When the trail passes through Lowellville, the trail seems to just end on the village streets but just continue in a straight line and the trail will resume on the other side of this small charming village. In Lowellville, there is a small locally owned (not a chain) convenience store and a couple of local taverns. On the New Castle side there is nothing as it seems to end out in the country. However a short but VERY hilly ride for an extra two - three miles will bring the rider into some additional facilities. In fact it is possible to ride to a more developed area with a WalMart, and several chain restaurants and fast food places. As I said thougfh if not familiar with the area it does look when the trail ends at the New Castle side that there is just nothing there.

The only issue I have is that there are markings guying you back to the parking lot and they seem to never have printed maps. So make sure you take your phone and photograph the park map.

Towner's Woods has some of the finest trails in the region, contained within a variety of environments. Near the park's entry, there is gorgeous Lake Pippin. Although water access isn't permitted because it is owned by the city of Akron (used for their water supply), some of the trails provide a scenic, somewhat hilly walk alongside it. The historic Hopewell burial mound (marked by an arrowhead on the map) is also near this entry portion of the park. The geography also includes flatter wetland terrain, a popular sledding hill, and a few ponds scattered throughout the woods. People use the park for trail running, dog walking (only on leash), and even cross country skiiing or snow shoeing in season. You could easily crank out 5-6 miles or more, if you were willing to retrace a few sections of the trail. All routes are well marked and maintained, and it would be hard to get lost in here for too long. Even on sunny weekends, I've been surprised at how sparsely populated the park is. Because of it's sprawling size, it's easy to have a very solitary experience. There are picnic pavilions and benches scattered around for warmer weather. Parking is plentiful just off the Ravenna Road entrance. There are also bathrooms in this area. If you're traveling on foot or by bike (bikes not permitted on the park's interior trails, though), you can get here via the Portage County Hike and Bike Trail. I hope you'll enjoy Towner's as much as I have. Whatever the season, it's an ideal place for a peaceful and active wander.

I was really impressed how well maintained the park is plus the restrooms are clean if your in the area it's worth stopping.

It was a gorgeous, sunny, unseasonably warm March day & I was the first car in the tiny dirt parking area on the left as soon as you turn in. The Falls is now directly across from the new entrance to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. There is a big stone covered with graffiti on the right. After you park, you just hop out and hit the path and follow the sound of gushing water. it is a short distance to the Falls, but it is uphill and it is steep and rocky and this is not a suitable path for anybody with physical limitations of any sort. It can also be dangerous for young children. It's very beautiful and it is worth the hike up. If you're sturdy footed (muddy & rocky), you can walk right behind the falls and it's quite beautiful. Highly recommended for a sightseeing but I'm sure it gets crowded and warmer weather.
