I came here for the first time for a birthday party and it was super cute! It had a very authentic vintage cozy cottage vibe and I'm here for it. The plating doesn't match, and yet it all comes together, each with it's own beautiful design that makes you feel like you can just settle in for a nice cuppa and catch up with a friend. They have a beautiful afternoon tea spread with sandwiches and cute dessert bites to go along with a vast array of teas to choose from. I really liked the Moroccan mint tea that came with the cutest tea cozy as well. The service is decent, and for a large party, they put the tea on another table to give you space. The one drawback was we would have to get up to pour our teas since it wasn't at our table. Another drawback was my teacup pours were only ever halfway unless I poured it myself. I had the gluten free afternoon tea. It was okay. The sandwiches were like 4/5... a little lacking in flavor. The lemon bar was bad and my husband said his regular gluten one was actually way better. I did really like the little scones they brought in the beginning. I also really liked the strawberries with icing on top. The peach bikini tea was the best. We also liked the masala Chai (and we're Indian). The hazelnut tea was pretty bad in our opinion. Lastly, the ambiance is lacking. There were entitled white women next to us so we knew all their business and that was the vibe of the establishment because they allowed it. Update: I'm changing my review from a 3 to a 1. Yall can thank this business manager Amy Q. Your racial gaslighting is though rare in Houston, a great reminder to POC to be weary of Whites. The least you can do as a White person is know and behave like you know that you don't know enough about racism and diversity. McHugh Tea Room was on Yelp's Top Ten high tea locations in the country. Yelp explained how these rankings were created in the article, and I was compelled to try out a place that was in throwing distance (for the Houston area). I have been eager and interested to partake in a high tea/afternoon tea experience for *years* and somehow the stars never aligned to try. After seeing the Yelp article and McHugh's proximity, I decided we were going to make this happen! You have to call to make a reservation - easy enough, but as a vegetarian there is always a little anxiety, especially when the menu is pre-set and you are not able to click to make sure the vegetarian preference is "checked." Luckily, we didn't run into any hiccups there! The website lists the high tea as anywhere from casual to formal, and the aura and ambiance of McHugh matches this - the decor is cute/nice but not overly formal, and feels generally comfortable. This is a generally affordable price point for high tea. You receive three pots of tea (a LOT for two people), and each one was incredibly tasty. We got the Really Raspberry, Butterfly Pea, and White Mango Pear. The Butterfly Pea was really unique - add a little lemon to change the color to purple too! Really fun touch. Unfortunately, the food items were all very...okay. Lets start with the savory: three different mini sandwiches. The best by far: pimiento cheese sandwich, but the bread used felt disappointing. Second best: cucumber sandwich - this would have really benefit from substituting the butter with cream cheese and would have added some much needed heft to the sandwich. The (truly unfortunately) most disappointing sandwich was the mixed vegetable sandwich. Again, some unique condiment, or some other unique flavor consideration would have gone a long way, and the bread used for this sandwich was the most disappointing despite the cute star cut into the top. The scones were the standout food items. The white chocolate scone was amazing and the peach scone was also really tasty. I would definitely come back and get the scones by themselves! The rest of the desserts were all fine. The lemon bar, the brownie were good, but did not leave a lasting impression, and unfortunately the cupcake was fairly disappointing. I wish I could say I could personally recommend this top ten high tea spot, but, at least for vegetarians, this might be worth a single try, but probably not a second. I was a little nervous about hitting an afternoon tea and leaving still hungry but that was not an issue here. Food portions were ample; ambiance was so cute and cozy I loved the mismatched tea sets. Felt like having tea at grandma's house. The service was friendly and our waitress was always around to top off our tea for us. Food was delicious, my favorite was the pimento cheese. - Disappointed and bamboozled - This review is specific to the specialty Christmas tea offering. We went this morning with young ones in tow for our first experience at McHugh's. We left feeling disappointed and bamboozled. Be aware the listed price of "begins at $45" will actually set you back $55 per person for essentially a kids menu. Both the food quantity as well as quality was absolutely not up to par for that price. The actual price IS listed online, but you have to click three different places to find it. Tucking it away like that is not transparent advertising. AND despite what is stated on their website, no one confirmed this new price of $55 when we booked our reservation. It felt like a bait and switch to us. The service, while friendly, was slow despite the restaurant being less than half full. We were never offered waters but saw other tables readily receiving them. The "freshly baked scones" were falling apart and were not served with the advertised clotted cream and jam. Not even butter was offered. The desserts, as you can see below are meager: Halved strawberries with icing piped on top. Grocery store marshmallows with faces drawn on..? We both felt bamboozled. There is a reason no one else in the restaurant ordered the Christmas special. It is noticeably meager compared to the regular tea and yet costs more money..? When the quality and quantity of the food was brought to the attention of the manager she took an argumentative tone, stating everything was accurately listed on their website. The insinuation was that it was somehow our fault that we didn't realize we were getting a kids menu for $55 pp. Her tone and response were really inappropriate. Buyer beware. This was my first time having an afternoon tea, and I would be lying if I said I was satisfied. It is a requirement to call a day ahead for the afternoon tea. The inside is clean and small, it has a little wall of things you can purchase for tea to the left right as you walk in. My favorite tea was the Bikini Peach Body, the Earl Grey came second, lastly the strawberry kisses. The tea had unlimited refills, but honestly unless you have a party of maybe 4 or more it's too much tea. For the two of us, there was a chicken salad sandwich, a cheese something sandwich, and half of a cucumber sandwich with the crust cut off and some sparkles added with some shapes. On the top was a brownie, an apple fritter, and cupcakes. We also received two types of scones. MUCH was to be desired with each of these things. The fritter and brownie were dry, and I'm not into brightly dyed foods so I did not want to try the cupcakes as it was not appealing to me. Nothing exceptionally stood out to me in terms of flavor, everything was fairly plain. I'm telling you all of this because I personally do not believe it was worth the price. 3 sandwiches, 2 baby scones, and desserts that didn't have much quality to them, and 3 sets of tea. Our total for everything for two people was $100 and some change. If I'm spending this much on something I would expect the quality to be a lot better, but this fell short of my expectations both on the food side and the server side. The server we had was alright, she told us to order 3 teas out of the blue. I was reading the menu but she took it out of my hands, as she said that we had already requested the afternoon tea. No explanation of what was to come nor if there was a food preference or food allergy. I ended up not eating 3 of the items we received out of my personal preference for taste. And I did not appreciate that she pulled the menu out of my hands. As we were sitting there for perhaps an hour and a half, she checked on us maybe twice. But what I did not appreciate was that my significant other came in, did not want to interrupt my conversation so asked our server if he could sit at the bar and order a tea or how he was supposed to order. But she just responded with "Huh?" He tried explaining I was sitting inside and was waiting for me, and she didn't understand what he was saying so she told him to sit outside and wait. I wasn't aware of their interaction, I was only aware after I turned around and saw him sitting outside by himself. I told him to come inside to sit with us. She apologized for the misunderstanding but it was something that was easily avoidable if she had just asked further or for clarification. I will not come here again. read more

I took my niece here for Afternoon High Tea. We both really enjoyed it. There was a cute plate on the table with my name on it which signified our reserved table. Since this was our first time here, the server went over the tea menu and selections with us. There was so many to choose from. We had the choice of 3 bottomless teas. I can not remember the names of the ones we choose, but they were colorful and good. One of the teas were blue and when you add lemon juice to it, it turned purple. We were given two scones each which was very good. I believe they were Buttermilk and Vanilla Matcha. We had clotted cream and strawberry jam to put on them. Next the server brings out the sandwiches and desserts. We had 3 sandwiches each; chicken salad, cucumber, and pb&j. I had them switch out the pimento. For desserts we each had a lemon bar, strawberry cupcake, and a brownie in a cup. The experience was highly delightful and fun. My niece really enjoyed it. The food was great. The decor was cute. They even had to go cups available so you can take the rest of your tea with you. I highly recommend this as a fun treat and something different to do. I came to this tea room with my ten year old sister. Making reservations is a little iffy, I called the day before for a 1:30 next day reservation which was accepted! But when we got there for our reservation we were not on the list. The confirmation text they had sent me was for the same time I called the previous day which didn't make sense either. They have a semi private room that could fit a small party for an intimate baby shower or graduation. They have an extensive tea menu and a few food options as well. The sandwiches were a little on the simple side but they were good, as were the desserts. There was a great selection of teas, some of which I haven't seen anywhere else. The scones were small but good. I do feel like there could have been more cream/jam given per table as I asked for more but it never came. The lunch food that others were ordering around us looked absolutely delicious. I will say that it was very loud inside the restaurant, it was hard to hear each other talking. I visited multiple tea rooms in the Houston area since fall of 2023 searching for the perfect place for my bridal tea shower. This place won me over! My mom and I went during the Christmas Holidays and within the first 10 minutes I knew this was the place for my shower. Literally put the deposit down to hold my date before leaving. I had the option to rent the entire tea room to accommodate my party. The experience was spectacular! My family, bridal party, and guests cannot stop talking about how awesome it turned out. Our dedicated servers, Jay, and Miriam were terrific. From the moment I stepped into the tea room they were expecting me and were 100% ready to go with everything. The owner, Woody, stopped by as well to check on things which is some pretty top notch customer service. Their teamwork was great and we felt as though they were part of our event! A hidden and remarkable gem tucked away near Chinatown! Ever since having high tea at Balmoral in Edinburgh, our expectations for high tea have been elevated. McHugh Tea did not disappoint and we are excited to have something like this in Houston! We went for afternoon high tea on a Saturday for our anniversary. I called the day before to make reservations over the phone and it was super easy. Parking was plentiful in front of the shop (they have a large parking lot). My husband is vegetarian so we requested that the high tea have vegetarian sandwiches. There were three types - cucumber/cream cheese, savory cheese and a vegetarian salad sandwich instead of chicken salad. The sandwiches were all yummy and the savory cheese was as authentic as it comes. It also came with two scones (a bit bigger than macarons) that were cranberry/orange and matcha. They came with clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd. The scones were very light and fluffy and served warm. While I've had clotted cream and strawberry jam frequently, I have never had lemon curd and it was a pleasant combination! The small desserts were a good addition to the teas. I'm terms of the teas, they had a great selection of white, black, oolong and green teas. We picked the Silver needle (white tea), Honeysuckle Fig (oolong) and Pu-erh teas. Our waitress guided us on the order to drink the tea and it was very helpful because we enjoyed the flavors more. The Honeysuckle Fig was unanimously our favorite as it had a natural sweetener. I'm sure that's music to the owner's ears because they overcharging quite a bit. For this expensive experience, this restaurant should be located in a high end plaza instead of a ghetto-like strip center that's super hard to get into. I am the first to admit that I am a novice when it comes time tea houses. However, I first visited McHugh this past fall for a professional event. I found it to be a pleasant establishment with a wide variety of teas and tea accessories available for purchase. Its comfortable interior makes for a relaxed environment. I totally didn't feel as though I needed to be on my "Ps" and "Qs". LOL What initially caught my eye is their "Butterfly" tea. What makes it so unique is its incredible, rich, blue color. When poured from the teapot it was a dark but not quite navy, blue. The coolest aspect was that after adding acid (in this case lemon) the color changed from blue to purple to fuchsia! This is all natural, the result of the acidic addition and way cool to see. I'll be honest, the tea has very little flavor and in my opinion needs the lemon wedge for taste. If you don't think this is something of interest, there are loads of tea offerings available from around the globe. The Butterfly is an Asian tea but there are standard varieties, as well as Indian teas, too. The customer service is outstanding. The owner is a delightful woman who is knowledgeable about her product. She also offers weekend Teas and cooking classes. Both require reservations and spaces fill up quickly. Don't delay.
