We contacted McKenzie's Landscape about some blackberry removal on our property. Kevin was very responsive and communicative during the estimate process, and quoted a very fair price for the work. The job was scheduled quickly and on the day of everyone showed up on time and completed the work quickly and efficiently. Kevin has done amazing things with our yard. The one time cleanup for our (very) overgrown areas was very reasonably priced, and a weekly maintenance charge was the best I've ever heard of ($25 a week). He and his crew have shown great diligence and careful planning when approaching our lawn and have wanted to make sure to meet our needs, but address future concerns as well. It's obvious he knows what he's doing, and he even gave me some tips on how to do some low level maintenance that would save higher costs in the future by requiring his crew to do more work. It started off a little rocky, but evolved into an excellent experience. The company goes by 2 names: McKenzie Landscaping and Blackberry Guys. I contacted them through Blackberry Guys, because we had 20 foot high blackberry bushes in the back forty of our large yard that seemed to be growing two feet a day and impinging on our lovely neighbors' garden. While I contacted Blackberry Guys, my husband contacted Mckenzie Landscaping. So we got the same quote, apparently from two different companies, and that delayed things a bit until we realized they were one and the same company. They gave a quote, but nobody at the time understood how much stuff was under those blackberries. Old tree saplings, tomato wire from the old vegetable garden, ivy, etc. It necessitated a second trip to our house. The second quote was, I felt, too high--doubled the cost of the project and we had been so careful to make sure the cost was within our budget. Not to worry. These folks really care about the customer 's experience. They made it right. Oh, and have I mentioned Micah? Micah did all the hard labor, and what a gem he is. Hardworking, extremely knowledgeable (he should be an arborist--he's THAT good), reliable, honest, fair--a genuinely good guy. Our yard looked beautiful when he was done and I know that that was the most important thing for him. I mean, he was really concerned about whether we were happy or not! Kevin (the owner) runs the show and he is a good guy; he realized that the bid was too low--through no one's fault. The guy who did the bid was a really good guy--empathetic and understanding of our concern about the doubling of the cost of the project. Sometimes you just don't know what lies beneath until you get there, like Micah did. A very good experience--we can't recommend this company highly enough. Oh, I forgot. Micah, bless his very good heart, scooped up the deer poop that was all over the place--our beloved deer bed down under our laurel hedge, and also righted a statue of St. Francis in our shade garden. I'm very pleased with McKenzie's Landscape. My 1+ acre property needed a lot of cleanup. Dead plants, overgrown bushes, blackberries, weeds, etc. It was terrible. I received a number of quotes, McKenzie's was the most reasonable. What I appreciated the most was their honest feedback. I expressed that I was only looking to cleanup the property. They took this to heart and did not try to oversell, unlike other companies. The owner even stopped by to ensure the initial estimate was realistic. I thought this was a nice touch. Hi, We had a great experience with Kevin from McKenzie's Landscaping! From looking at the reviews below they are somewhat mixed. This caused us some pause before moving forward. We rarely write reviews, but felt is was justified in this case. Of course, we can only speak to our experience, which was very positive. The following are the details of our experience. We have 20 acres on Parrett Mountain configured as our home and a horse boarding and training facility. We do most of the work on our property ourselves. But sometimes in the Fall, we need some help. We have used other companies in the past, but the price had been creeping up and wanted to try other alternatives. McKenzie Landscaping had recently posted some signs in our area and we contacted them for a quote on a one-time property clean up. We have many deciduous trees (mostly Maples), so a big part of this job was leaf clean-up combined with some other general bed and landscape clean-up. We contacted them on Wednesday and they indicated they were in our area that day and scheduled an appointment for 11 AM to review and bid the job. They notified us when they were on their way, and arrived promptly at the scheduled time. My wife reviewed the work that we wanted to be done with them. My wife found the communication to be very good. She was given a verbal bid, and we had an email bid within an hour. Further, they indicated that they could get to this the next day with a crew of four. My wife and I discussed the bid, then replied to the bid with a slightly more detailed list of areas for clean-up than was in the bid, but that had been discussed, we received a positive reply and decided to move forward. They arrived the next morning about 8:30, and from my wife's observation, they were a hard-working group that focused on the job that was agreed to. They did a great job with the tasks that were agreed to, but beyond that, they also did a few extra tasks in the areas that we had not specifically discussed. Kevin and his team transformed my property! I moved from a suburban lot to a 3 acre hillside, which the previous owners hadn't touched in 5 years. You wanna see what blackberries and hawthornes can do in that time, I'll show you the "before" mess I had! Would have taken me months to get done myself what the guys did in two days. I thought the cost was very fair - wasn't cheap, but we agreed on exactly what was going to be done, and they brought in special equipment to clear away the tangle. Everything done on time, even with a couple adjustments needed while the job was happening (like three ground hornet nests and a bunch of rocks hidden under the field grass). CUSTOMERS BE ON ALERT. This man Kevin McKenzie is a fraud. His crew never completed the job they were hired for and money was demanded. He himself was verbally abusive to me when I complained about the work. Before the job started I sent him numerous pictures of the jobsite and told him how large ( 2 acres) the garden and property was, He assured me that I would be satisfied with the work. I chose his company because he gave a reasonable bid of $1400. When they arrived a week later he wanted to charge $600 extra for a patch of blackberries which were surrounding a garage we had previously talked about removing and were in his quote as "down to the ground" removal. He did not bring any of the equipment in his pictures, just a couple of push mowers, weed eaters and one small riding mower, no chainsaw to cut down a few volunteer trees and scotch broom which were in the pictures, No hedge trimmers to tackle the shrubs which were discussed (I have his text messages, quote and telephone convo as proof) no removal of any debris.He did not stay on the jobsite to supervise his crew, they destroyed some of our plants in the flower beds even though I pointed to the plants that i wanted to stay. The worker I was talking to did not know the difference between a flowering plant and a weed and left several of our shrubs untrimmed. I had a problem with my plants wilting and dying so I called about 5 landscapers for quotes on amending my clay soil. This was one of the two that got back to me right away and the only one that didn't think my job was too small to be worth it. The other guy wanted a minimum of $1000 for a day of work. Mike arranged a time with me came over to check out the issue and recommended a few simple troubleshooting things for me to try myself before going to extremes of pulling out the plants and restarting everything with amended soil. It took him about 10 minutes. A couple weeks later my hydrangeas are healthy and blooming again.... And he didn't charge me a dime. I wish I had more garden and lawn needs because I would hire them to handle it all in a second. AND he followed up with me of his own volition after a few weeks to see how the plants were faring after the changes I made. Quite a difference from the others who didn't even return my original call. At least someone still knows what customer service is! read more
