Flew in this evening, and felt the need for a pint and a bite. Hitting up the Mcmenamins are always something I enjoy doing when visiting, and tonight was no exception. Walking in, I loved this big open space, up on the second floor, with high a high roof lots of windows. Made for a fun spot to sit on this rainy evening. So major points for ambiance there. Also noticed an outside deck, which I'll for sure have to try if I swing back during summer. The beer was fantastic, especially their new holiday ale. And also grabbed some of their sliders, which were like just SOOOOOO good. Plus, our server was quite nice, and the food came out really quickly. So yeah, in short, we needed a spot for a late evening pick-me-up, and we sure found it. Will try to return someday and see what else this location has to offer. read more

First time, didn't know it was in this area. Daughter called for a good burger, so we said, McMenamins !! A very cool vibe kinda place, plenty of room for large parties and it's upstairs. They do have an elevator for those needing to use. We had a choice of where to sit, waiters were very nice, kind and cheerful. We ordered drinks and food. I ordered the Captain Neon Burger. It was delicious. My daughter was please with her Swiss and Mushroom Burger and husband had a Crispy Fish n Chips with a substitute salad. We enjoyed our experience and meal. If you spend enough time in the PNW, you'll learn about the McMenamins chain of repurposed, restored pubs, bars, hotels, and/or restaurants. This one was pretty on par with eclectic decor and the standard McMenamins bar theme. Really pretty place! Terrible parking though. Menu remains the same although I personally think each location should have their own signature dish or drink. Service was ok, food was ok, seasonal drinks were fun and also ok. The outside deck is very pleasant. We had to send french fries back twice because they were burnt, and cold. We were finally given a fresh serving that was much better. Great spot on the east side. I was impressed with their happy hour- it's not only drinks, but they have $$ off on appetizers and burgers! Such a great deal. For someone who does not drink alcohol, happy hour specials on food items make me happy lol It was early dinner/ late lunch for me. I had a bacon cheeseburger with tots. They were great. We like the upstairs and full windows of this space. It was busy when we were there but the staff were quick and attentive. Our waters and ice tea were always full. This is our 2nd time we ordered food here, one for to-go. We ordered the Tuna Melt with tomatoes on sourdough bread and it came with tater tots. Excellent sandwich! This particular McMenamin's location is great! All the employees are phenomenal. Very professional and friendly. The location is great... right off a major bus line. There are panoramic windows facing Broadway and an outdoor seating area with a large screen to watch sports. The burgers are top notch! The tots are great! The beer is what I really come here for though... other than the great friendly service! They know my drink preferences and are always on top of everything... no matter who is on staff. I'm not a local so maybe my outsider perspective is wrong but I feel like this is the type of joint that's only good for the food and drinks, and nothing else. I came here after a work meeting with my colleagues (group of 20 max) and we had reserved one of the private rooms for 5pm. We were all under the assumption we made it in time for happy hour (that ended at 6pm). But somehow, the server was only able to manage to get some people's orders in before HH ended and the rest of us had to pay regular price. I understand we were a moderately-sized group BUT if our reservation was well before 6 and everyone was there to put there order in, I'm not sure why some of us had to pay the regular price when we were all aiming for happy hour. I don't know, I feel like the server, who turned out to be a manager, could've handled the situation better. Instead, he offered up some attitude to me and a couple of other ladies. My dad and I thought it'd be nice to check this out again as we'd dined here a few times throughout my childhood. I think we both recalled not having been for 10+ years...and now I recall why. We both ordered a burger and brew. Only my burger came with a bonus plastic piece hidden in the salad that I didn't discover until nearly my last bite. By then I had no desire to finish the remainder of my burger. I let our server know and she immediately let the kitchen staff know and said she'd comp my meal and apologized. 5 stars for our server, friendly and communicative. Seems like she did what she could do within her control 0 stars for the backhouse. I'm a bit surprised there's a 100 health score for this restaurant. 0 stars for management as they made no appearance in this dining experience. Unlike most McMenamins this one is located on a busy street as part of the city vibe. With street access from Street parking it's located up a couple flights of stairs before dinning. The view is nice with lots of light from atrium feel of windows. There is even a large covered out door seating with heaters for the crisp fall air or a summer breeze that could also accommodate a party. Mid day just before lunch rush is quiet and you can definitely get work done, study, or have a work meeting. The service is kind and understanding even when plans change and you have to get your food to go. The seating can accommodate small to large groups easily and the TVs are constantly playing. Like most McMenamins the food is the same (maybe slightly different names) and you can typically request food from other branches because they get the same basics everywhere. Their gf options are good and their warm drinks are not only flavorful but large cups. The seasonal cider is always good, but varies by what's on tap. I thought McMenamins was a really cool place. I'm from New York, so I'm not used to seeing restaurants so HUGE!! McMenamins was a fun experience and I would love to come back. The atmosphere is unlike any place I've been. With floor to ceiling windows and plants everywhere, it feels like an aviary. Very nice ambiance. The staff was really nice, and a couple noticed my accent and asked if we were from New York. The staff was very friendly. Now for the food, my wife ordered a salmon burger with the truffle fries, and I had the wilbur jumbo delux. My wife wasn't too impressed with the salmon burger, but absolutely loved the truffle fries, in fact she ordered more. My food was good, but nothing to write home about. The stars of the show for me surprisingly was the ketchup. I don't know what they put in it, but Portland has its own brand of ketchup and it is unlike any I've ever tasted. I tasted so good, I think that's why my wife doubled down on the fries. I was really impressed with the beer selection. I had a beer flight, while I cant remember which ones I tried, I can say without a doubt the beer here is on point. Back home its not easy to get good microbrew, but in Portland it seems like everywhere you go there is great beer. McMenamins is no exception. I took the recommendations from our waiter for the beer flight, so if you are not sure what beers to try, definitely go with the houses suggestions. There is no words for me to explain the lack of service and quality of food my party dealt with during our visit but I will try. We arrived at 5:45pm on 11/10 for dinner prior too attending a show at the Moda Center. McMenamins website states the following "we're a few blocks from Lloyd Center Mall, and the Moda Center & Memorial Coliseum are one mile away - stop in before or after Blazer games, Winterhawks games, concerts, shopping...we'll pour you a pint or craft you a cocktail." This is exactly what my party and I did and started our evening out on the wrong foot. We ordered drinks at 05:50pm and drinks alone didn't arrive until 06:30pm. Prior to drinks being delivered we placed our food order as time was limited. After our food order was placed we were not checked on nor were told that the kitchen could be behind. Our server was also the bartender and manager on duty, his name was Reed. At 07:05pm a member of my party and I approached the bar to order another round of drinks for our table and to question about our food order. That is were we found Reed, making drinks for another party (as it was his job since he was the bartender) we asked to order a round of drinks for our party where he made the following comment, "sorry got into the weeds with making drinks and it will be a bit before I can bring another round" I had asked if we could get waters for the table as they were not brought with our drinks when we had asked for them at the beginning. They were never brought to our table. I mentioned to him that our dinner order was in the window and it was getting cold, he looked over at the window and said " yeah thats your large ticket" Being frustrated I left the bar and went back to our table. It was about 10-15 minutes later and our food was still not delivered, we asked another server if he could help and run our food out. Still was not delivered, when our food arrived everyone's food was cold, not even warm as they pulled it out of under the warmers and sat it on the bar top to be ran. Service was awful, food was awful and we still paid for food that wasn't even eatable, coming from a service and travel background this was one of my worst experience I've had. I will not be a patroon or recommend McMenamins to friends, family or clients. There is a lack of service training and customer appreciation from your corporation. I was looking at planning an event with McMenamins at Edgefiled for my Compnay but have since reconsider. I hope this works it ways to the right department and training can be had with staff as this is never acceptable in a service industry job. I came in for a quick bite between meetings at 5:00. Restaurant was virtually empty, they were only one other table seated. Two different waiters walked past me multiple times without looking my way, finally a guy said he would be right with me and then disappeared. I sat there for about 15 minutes and didn't o see another waiter. I never got a menu, never had anyone interact with me. Oh, yes! Another McMenamins location that we visited for our cosmic passports! I have to admit I wouldn't necessarily say this is my most favorite McMenamins location I've been to this far but it isn't bad. It's not in an old, historic building or anything like that but the atmosphere is very pleasant as McMenamins usually tends to be. After you've been to enough McMenamins locations sometimes the menu options start getting repetitious(for some locations anyway) so in this case we skipped getting anything to eat. We settled into a pair of one of our favorite hot cocktails that they make here, the delicious Spanish Coffee and with that it made a delightful night cap to a very entertaining evening running out and about in Portland a few months ago. read more

Last night after a show we decided to stop at McMenamins on Broadway for a bite to eat. When we arrived, it was 8:50pm. No one offered to seat us (a party of 2), so we finally asked a woman behind the counter if we should seat ourselves and she told us to sit pretty much anywhere. After sitting for a while, a man who worked there and appeared to be the manager, walked right by us with menus in hand, and said not one word to us, no 'I'll be right back' - nothing. I finally got up and grabbed menus. When it became clear after nearly 30 minutes that the 4-5 employees working had no interest in serving us, we got up and left, walking right by 2 of the employees who again, never said a word. If it had been busy, then I could have accepted (to some extent) the lack of service, but there were only 2 other 2-tops and a party of 5 or 6 in the corner - that was it. I've experienced poor service at other McMenamins, who used to be known for good food and descent service. While I appreciate their approach to saving and preserving older buildings, it's truly unfortunate that they've lost sight of their core business, which should be good food, good drinks and good service. I have been to many McMenamins and understand that I am going to have mediocre food when I go, but am in for a nice experience. McMenamins on Broadway consistently has the WORST McMenamins food I have ever had. I have eaten at this one many times (due to proximity) and will explain two examples of the nastiness they call food. Today I ordered a club sandwich. The club was on cheap sourdough, with slathered on aioli. The aioli with the avocado made the sandwich so wet that it was a soggy mayo mess. My second example was a year ago when I came and ordered a pizza. Typically Mcminamins is known for their wood fired pizza. Broadway is a big fat NOPE on this. It tasted like a dollar frozen pizza. I would recommend going to another McMenamins as their organization is great, hotels are awesome and restaurants are decent. read more

I haven't been to a McMenamins in a hot minute! I've been craving their Cajun tater tots and wasn't disappointed. Service was great. The pink lemonade was so-so. Tasted like lemonade with only slight strawberry flavor. I prefer the ones at Red Robin or Pastini. However, the refill was fine, which leads me to believe that it was only a matter of mixing. I got the grilled pub steak, which was nicely seasoned and medium rare just like I asked. It came with mashed potatoes and green beans. Don't let its bland appearance fool you, the mashed potatoes was the shining star -creamy and seasoned just right. The green beans, however, were overly salty and I didn't care for the nuts or the smokiness. Yes, I don't know what they did exactly, but it tasted like they grilled the green beans? I do appreciate their dedication to seasoning and efforts to put their own spin on a classic. I also had a taste of the Baja chicken sandwich and thought the chicken was moist with a nice spicy kick. The fries that came with it were bland and weren't warm or crisp. I recommend going with the tots as a side. These were only minor downsides and overall I'm very happy with the meal I received. read more

There were eight people in our party and the waiter was very accommodating about splitting all of our checks. This is a nice looking location. Even though it's not in a stand alone building, it's still worth going to. The restaurant is on the second floor. If you come in from the street you just follow the stairs up. Once you reached the top of the stairs, you can see it's definitely a McMenamins with all decor. My favorite spot to eat is definitely the covered patio (is that what it's called). It just makes it feel as if you are not in the middle of the city. The food is good and the service that we received was pretty good. Came here with seven friends several hours before we needed to be to a concert. Our waiter came after about 10-15 minutes of waiting to take drink orders and I noticed went back to the bar to make them. Huh, that's different I thought. We got drinks (sans water I requested) after a bit of a wait and then had to wait 20 minutes to order food. When our waiter came back to take our food order he blamed the hostess for not bringing water and disappeared again. Keep in mind it was not busy at all in the restaurant, but they did seem short staffed. We had ordered two appetizers to come out before our food. Ten minutes passed, then 20, still no water or food, after around 30 minutes one member of our party went to find our waiter to see what was happening with the food and asked to speak to the manager. Apparently our waiter/bartender was also the manager. He made some nonchalant comment and made no attempt to remedy the situation. We then noticed our food sitting in the window at about the 45 minute mark while our manager/bartender/waiter piddled around slowly behind the bar. When two of our party took him to the mat about our food getting cold in the window he denied it. When our food finally came out after an hour 95% of it was cold. I took two bites of my tepid hamburger and was so disappointed in the entire experience it took every thing I had not to walk out. That sentiment was echoed in our group even though everyone there had worked in the service industry before. The manager ended up comping $80 off our bill. I think we still got fleeced for having to wait so long for subpar food and service, and I never did get my damn water. read more

Tonight several of us who were in Lloyd District for a conference wound up going to dinner here. The menu promised something for everyone. We arrived in two waves totaling about 20 total. There was one server for our whole area. She was SUPER but a group that big - all of whom needed separate checks...it was a LOT. Food came out in waves and it was all very good. As most of us were finishing, the fire alarm went off and we all had to evacuate. (There was an actual dumpster on fire out back, near enough to the restaurant to trigger evacuation). Our group did the right thing by gathering cash for the harried server and kitchen crew and hope others did, too. Server was in tears, having maybe worked her busiest night in a while.
