What a great hidden gem. From the outside this place looks small. But once you get inside, it opens up to a fantastic bar, shuffleboard area, dining area, and a whole lot more space than you would expect. And of course, a great McMenamin's fashion. Great place within walking distance of our Holiday Inn Express in the Slabtown area of Portland. Large pool hall and other assorted "games", with a long bar running the length of one side, was the room to which we entered, but were cheerfully shown to the restaurant side - with its own sizable, well stocked bar - so we could get a late dinner. First thing we noticed was the wood burning stove warming the relatively red glowing restaurant, feeling cozy and inviting. Cute little accent lamps sit window side atop each booth. The rest of the decor is an eclectic mix of sports, saloon, modern art, hand painted accents, early 19th century aside deco lighting accents and some neon for good measure. If we lived here this would definitely be our local public house. Cool vibes, chill, but attentive service, extensive drink menu, featuring seasonal cocktails, large area for socializing, watching sports and good food. After perusing the drink menu, I debated between the Cherry cider or the Blackberry cider, so a sample of each was offered. The Blackberry Cider was recommended for my sweet palette and this was a great suggestion! Cold, fresh and VERY EASY to drink, dangerous! For dinner, Hubs went with 12" pep pizza and I a cheeseburger and fries. McMenamins' burgers start with a fresh ground 6oz patty, cooked to perfection. Mine was topped w/Tillamook cheddar and dressed w/lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and "secret" sauce on a lovely, soft steamed bun. Accompanying the burger were thin, crispy, but tender inside, fresh, real potato fries. Everything was delicious and satisfying. Happy Hour is offered twice daily, 2-5pm then 9-11pm SU-TH and 9-Midnight on Fri & Sat. They offer "Lunch Box Specials" and Seasonal Entree Specials as well. I came here over the weekend and just about everything was mid a the service, the food, the entire experience really. The ambiance was nice - very cool setting. Not the best service - no one was available to seat me, ended up having to order at a different bar, waitress seemed bothered by having to serve us. Food was mid especially considering the cost, it was kinda spendy for being basic and small portions. I'd give it 1x try but if it's not better after that I personally wouldn't return. This was a very fun little spot to have dinner at. The pool room in the back and extra fun and entertainment. I had the dilly tuna sandwich, I ordered the half portion because it's a huge sandwich! This is a busy location on 23rd. I like that it has two main rooms with completely different vibes. The pool room is more divey with a longer bar. The front room is cozier with an old fashioned furnace, small bar and more tables for family friendly dining. Bartenders are usually friendly, but everyone has an off day so I'll forgive a blip here and there. The burgers and fries always hit the spot. Happy hour deals are worth it. The North side of Portland has a handful of locations, but this is a favorite. read more

I don't write a lot of reviews and it makes me very sad to write this. I've been coming to this location since it was Chug-A-Mug (dive bar in early 80s) and have grown up at Tavern & Pool. In recent years as we're older, tend to get take-out more often than dining in. Today was the biggest waste of $72 ever - for a dinner for 3. I try not to eat tons of french fries - but have never had the willpower to say no to the awesome McMenamin fries (and sweet potato fries.) Today's fries were awful compared to the norm from decades past - basic frozen french fries. Chicken strips - boring and tasted frozen. My wife got an old staple - the Hammerhead Garden Burger, but it wasn't a garden burger but appeared to be the disdained lab-created "beyond meat" or something similar. My pub greens salad, a staple for me, was very boring, looked very bland vs. the norm and the raspberry vinagarette was very old looking. Writing this hoping management reads it and addresses things before it's too late. Beyond the food, it was an emotional visit. A friend of ours did a LOT of work for most of the McMenamin's locations over the last few decades and his work was on display throughout the restaurant. He passed away today after a long illness so I was thinking of him. I'm not a beer drinker but he LOVED IPAs - so I was going to have one in his honor but when I arrived, it sounded like the order was almost ready to go. Ended up being a lot longer - and I was never checked-in with (although sitting at the bar) nor asked if I'd like to order a drink while waiting. I would have said yes.... The rare times I write a review, it's because of an impressive 5 star experience. Hopefully this historic location turns it around. read more

Great food and drinks! Wow I had low expectations for this place due to the decor and looks of the restaurant/bar. I was dead wrong. Everything we ordered was so tasty. I remember the seasonal apple whiskey drink I ordered. The drink was affordable, tasty, and strong. We ordered the burger sliders, the Cajun tots, and the steak and fries with cheese during sauce. All of it was so tasty! If I had to choose again, I would get the steak bites with fries and cheese sauce. I also loved the tots. I had to try this place as I saw the McMenamins references all over PDX. They also had excellent beer. This was one of my favorite spots while in Portland. Give it a try! read more

Another great McMennamins meal! The service was fantastic! We were well taken care of! The food was really good too, we had some corn dog bites as appetizers and I had the Dungeon burger for dinner. It's one of the better mushroom and swiss burgers I've had in the area. It was good from the first bite to the last. The only downside was the surprise heap of onions I asked to not have on the burger. It's hard to get around that flavor. I know there are several locations within the Portland metro area and I finally tried once when meeting friends for lunch. I had the french dip. The sandwich itself was good, but the aus jus was pretty salty. The tater tots were good and so was the dipping sauce it came with. The orders of my friends looked really good too. I'll have to come back and try something else off the menu. Service was good. We were checked on regularly and asked if we needed anything. Our waitress was very nice and my friend commented on how he enjoyed her fun answers to our touristy questions. I was told that each location is a little different, but this one seemed more like a pub. There was a separate section for 21 and older. They had pool tables and a bar. read more

Can't go wrong with a beer and some shuffleboard, which is exactly what we did. We didn't have any food this go around but did enjoy ourselves for the afternoon. It's a large space with a couple pool tables and a couple shuffleboards. The bar area is pretty large and there's a smaller dining room. Fun spot for some bevvies and snacks. We stopped in after visiting the Pecularium on Boxing Day. I had a flight of ciders (the driest was the best by far) and split some Scooby Snax (mini corn dogs) with The Colonel. Sprossling and guest split an order of spinach artichoke "dip" which was more like a hot salad (not complaining) as it had far more veg than 'matrix'. Only complaint was the raw tater tot that ended up on the spinach artichoke dip plate that was a bit yuck. But it happens. Nice and warm, practically empty on a holiday Tuesday. I got a salad and tots to go and when I got back to my place I opened the salad to find it not even half full. The food was delicious, but to pay almost $13 (not including the $5 extra I paid for chicken, so almost $18) for less than half a salad was more than disappointing. I have given multiple McMenamins locations a try, and time and time again the food proves not to be worth the cost. Although we didn't come to play pool, we overheard the host explaining to a couple guys ahead of us that the tables were closed to accommodate additional, socially-distanced tables. Sounds sensible, but there weren't enough tables occupied to turn them away - in fact, the entire lower area was completely empty, and only two or three other tables up top were in use. If you're advertising pool, it should be available all the time, if possible. Maybe they'd have better luck at Lucky Staehly's (hah!) over at Edgefield, but that's a bit of a drive from the Pearl. That said, we stopped in for our passport stamps and a snack while waiting for friends, had a wonderful bowl of tortilla soup and a Bloody Mary, before trudging up 23rd for our rendezvous. The interior was toasty warm due to the freshly-lit furnace, smelled comfortingly of woodsmoke (though not too much), and the service was friendly and attentive. Seems like a great place to come chill during the evening, enjoy a drink and play some pool, assuming the tables are open. I wouldn't have questioned it before, but I will probably call ahead now, just to be sure. read more

McMenamins is a staple of the Portland community and I appreciate everything they do with restoring old buildings by bringing new life. The Tavern and Pool downtown is a great spot to hang with friends. During the winter they have a warm wood burning stove and the decor is a throwback to old Portland. Plus the service was fantastic! For drinks they have a full menu. I recommend trying their brews which are all made locally or any of their wines which are grown/bottled locally as well. The food is good. Kind of standard pub food. I give them 4 stars because the food that they serve is solid. Is it the amazing cuisine served by many Portland staples? No. But here you'll find awesome wood fired pizza, good burgers and standard pub fare. I would always recommend McMenamins as a great casual spot to hang out while in Portland. read more

There was only one other table filled and the music was as loud as if the bar and all tables were filled. Frozen in time- circa 1998. That's fine with me, I like that part. Service is really bad. It's like they don't really want to serve. Last week I was here and sat down at 2:15. We ordered, at 3. Service is an afterthought here. In fact, I'm sitting here now, and servers have whizzed past me several times. No one has taken my order. I've been a server, so I hate to rag on the staff. My rating would be a -5 stars for McMenamins. Came here for a meal with my mother. 60 minutes after we were seated and had ordered I began to notice all the patrons who had arrived after us were eating their meals and checking out. I attempted to flag down some staff to assist but apparently Asian Americans aren't acknowledged in this establishment. After my attempts to garner staff's attention from the table, and still no meal, we got up and asked to cancel our order. I get it. Times are hard. The past 16 months have shifted the ability of restaurants to operate at full capacity with adequate staff who are willing to go back to work. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt (why we patiently waited an hour) but the targeted discrimination we experienced here was atrocious. Woeful Ignorance. This spot used to hold fond memories for us. Sad to say we will never recommend any McMenamins to our friends (who are of all colors, shapes, and sizes). From here on out, will advise my friends/family to refrain from this place altogether to avoid the humiliation we experienced. McMenamins, do better. read more
