We always enjoy staying at McMenamins Grand Lodge and make a point to visit about once a year. We recently stayed for a quick overnight getaway and had another great experience. Our king room was spacious, comfortable, and dog-friendly. We really appreciated the thoughtful touches for our pup, including food and water bowls in the room and a welcome treat upon arrival. One of the perks of staying overnight is access to the outdoor soaking pool, which is always a highlight. The property has plenty to enjoy, including several bars, a main restaurant, a spa, and even a movie theater. There's enough to keep you entertained without ever needing to leave the grounds. We're big fans of McMenamins in general and, as Tripsters, we're always happy to visit their unique properties. Grand Lodge continues to be one of our favorites. The staff is consistently friendly, welcoming, and helpful. At times they seem a bit understaffed and can get busy, but the employees always do their best to provide great service and make guests feel taken care of. What an amazing place! We stopped by as an alternative to outdoor activities because of rainy conditions outside and we were not disappointed. As described on their website, "the stately manor is filled with one-of-a-kind rooms, a beguiling ghost, spa, soaking pool, theater, games and restaurants serving handcrafted goodness." You were provided a map and wandered from the attic to the basement. Each floor was an exciting new adventure with pictures, paintings of/by previous guests, and fascinating historical commentary. We ate lunch there and it was delicious. Their menu is quite varied with specials each day and even vegan offerings. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and purchase several things from the on-site gift shop. Parking was easy, employees were friendly and helpful, and the hours we spend wandering the mansion were a fantastic way to spend a rainy afternoon. Spent two nights here. Checked in on 6-17-2026 and checked out 6-19-2026. The person who checked me in was very helpful. I didn't catch her name but she had a shaved head. She saw that my birthday was coming up and offered to comp me two cans of beer to be drunk in room. Also I had mentioned that when I made my reservations I was going to pick room with bathroom. But by the time I made the reservation the room was no longer available. So he put me in a room across the hall from the common bathroom. Our company held our manager retreat here just a week ago, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate us, even helping us get into our rooms early. They handled everything for our group with professionalism and genuine smiles. I recently had my first stay at Grand Lodge for a manager retreat and was absolutely wowed by its character, charm, and detail. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and PATIENT! lol. Our group was very excited (and I'm sure it showed), so that patience was especially appreciated. Some of my favorite memories from the trip were discovering the secret hallway, spotting the faces on the pipes, reading the stories written throughout the halls, listening to my CD player in the tucked away, lush outdoor seating areas, and even meeting the gray cat outside by the back garden. I have been going here for years, but it's my first time for a concert. Heck I didn't even know they could do a concert. This is more or less on their front lawn off to the side. It actually works out great and scones the stage isn't that big it's big enough. The seating is all GA but they have a VIP section if that's your thing. With the GA seating getting there and securing a spot early is important if you are going to rent their $14 low-back chairs. If you bring your beach towel, then showing up later is fine because you can just slip In anywhere there is a small spot. I showed up one hour after gates opened with my beach towel and was like 30 feet from the stage. Pro tip: Don't bother renting a chair if you are going to sit up close to the stage. Once the concert begins everyone stands up for the entire concert anyways. If you are sitting further back then chair rental makes sense, especially because the ground is not soft and uneven in several places. The other thing I noticed is that they did allow those bleacher seats that are cushioned and have a back to them. I dislike their policy on no blankets or bringing your own lowback chairs but I think I I can understand why. People were abusing the policy. I can personally tell you I use to see people use their chairs as a place in line that they drop off in the morning and come back to just before gates open. Kinda unfair, but also people that brought huge blankets to hold off large spaces in front of the stage for their friends and family that showed up later. I was surprised at the sound quality which was pretty good for an outdoor venue. But then I was 30 ft back from the stage. Not sure how it is further back. The other thing is if it's a cold night, bundle up as you can't bring any blankets anyways. They do make you measure your towel to make sure it doesn't exceed the size limit and if it does your only choice is to check it in at the gate or return it back to your car. About the rest of the property. It is a unique like several mcnenamins properties in that they rehab'ed and restored historic buildings into a cool venue for eating and drinking and even lodging. I love that about mcmenamins. Grand Lodge is no exception. A beautiful property way out in Forest Grove. They offer lodging, dining, a movie theater, and music. There is a little spa area too. Parking is usually not an issue and I have stayed overnight before and it's been a great experience. However, the food and beers are honestly good but not great. It's the same way across most of the Mcmenamins. Sure there is better food and better beer but you don't get a cool setting like this. Yes, you come for the setting and that's what makes it worthwhile. read more

Grand Lodge was a fun stop. We explored the grounds and found some hidden corners! A few of the rooms weren't open yet, so check the hours in what you hope to visit before you go. It was surrounded by families with a lot of kids and that's not my idea of relaxing, so we headed out. Came to my 2nd McMenamins of my trip to Portland with family and it was so cool! We ended up grabbing drinks in their downstairs bar and bringing them upstairs to their small lounge with a fireplace. Being by the fireplace was incredibly cozy, Riesling is my favorite type of wine so sitting by the fireplace and talking with my family was very enjoyable. We ended up ordering a few appetizers including truffle fries and the fried Brussel sprouts. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture. Then I also ended up ordering the brownie sundae for dessert. Down the hallway was their theater which is so cool, they were playing the new tron movie. After we enjoy some time by the fire we went upstairs and discovered a cool hidden hallway and explored it until it took us back down a level. My wife always tells me that, "we go to Mcmenamins for the experience". Well, sometimes it's a good experience and sometimes not. The food is always fine. The service is always nice, but LITERALLY the slowest I've ever had. Every time. Took 20 minutes for us to get our beer and Arnold Palmer. I ordered the Captain Neon with the Hammerhead patty and no bacon, they of course left the bacon on there. Why would someone order a veggie patty but still want bacon? It's really frustrating almost every time. I really wish they were consistently better rather than worse. Go here if you a couple hours, don't mind waiting and don't mind your food coming out wrong. read more

Quirky place and yet we would recommend it if you're adventurous. It's a little dated in room maintenance but I guess that's part of the vibe since it's from the late 1800's or something like that. I love the art work - painted doors and quotes calligraphed on walls; details about people who were known back in the day, with each room having a person's name and story on it. Many rooms share bathrooms but it's not bad at all and you can upgrade for $50 to get a private bath. Soaking pool and the grounds were beautiful. Restaurant food was mediocre but you're staying at a lodge not a resort. Worthwhile as long as you don't have super high, elegant expectations. Great place to stay if you're traveling around the area - headed to Hagg Lake or other places. Enjoy the storytelling magic that takes place when you cross the threshold and feel like you've been transported to another era entirely. read more

Tired of the stale chain hotels? Looking for something different from the small local motel with no scenery? Sure both have their place when nothing else is around, but if traveling in OR or WA and possibly near a McMenamins hotel property that's the choice. Before leaving on a roadtrip from Los Angeles to OR we booked a night at the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove west of Portland and WOW was this place fun. Check in, drop the bags, set out exploring and never left the property. Room had a very comfy bed which was great because of my many joint pains; spacious private bathroom too. Key word, private because communal is available. Our room was on the second floor where the ghost (the Lavender Lady) roams. I'd say I didn't experience the ghost directly but was still touched indirectly. Not sure how many bars the property has but we visited 4, which I think wasn't half. We had too much fun exploring during the day and night that we visited the Soaking pool in the morning. A welcome visit too after I suffered severe quad strains 2 days prior and still couldn't walk downhill or down stairs without great pain. Hidden rooms were so fun to find. Staff was incredibly nice and very helpful. Food wise though, sadly the menu for the restaurants we visited is the same; general pub food is how I'd describe it so that's the only thing I wished would have had better. We're not foodies so not a deal breaker. This place rocked! read more

My review is of "The Garage Door", a tiny music venue in the bottom level of McMenamin's Grand Lodge. For a music venue, this is about as good as one could imagine a music venue in a hotel could be. It is definitely as quirky as one would expect for McMenamins, with bathrobe-clad hotel patrons wandering through on their way to the spa. With that said, the venue is tiny, intimate, cozy, and had a great-sounding PA system. There are few tables, and food can be ordered from Bob's Basement Bar. Attended a concert at this location for the first time, GA was ok. It's a smaller place for a concert than Edgefield, where I've been numerous times. The employees were helpful & pleasant. The band was great! The food was just ok: I had the Sunset bowl, which included hulihuli chicken, a scoop of rice, a serving of Mac salad & a Hawaiian bread roll. For the price of $17, mmmm- just ok. As much as I love McMenamins and what they have done to revitalize old buildings, I cannot recommend the Grand Lodge. They put us in a basement room that was wedged between two bars, one in the hallway just outside our door and the other, across the hall. The band played until about 10:30 p.m. the first night but the yakking went on until 1 a.m. At various times, the bar patrons sat on the sofa outside our door talking loudly (to be heard over the band). Another time, someone tried to get in our room. Apparently, seeing a door marking the "Jerry Garcia" room was too intriguing to pass by without trying. The room itself was dark and cold. The window was dirty and what little view there might have been was obscured by debris and foliage. While we knew the bathroom was shared, (it had never been a problem at other places we've stayed), we didn't expect we'd have to walk through the bar in our pajamas to use it. Of the five bathrooms serving a large number of rooms, two were out of order for the entire three days we were there. The bathrooms lacked surface areas for us to put clothing on while showering. Before we left we looked over some of the upstairs rooms and they were vastly better than ours. No comparison. If you have any interest in staying here, I suggest you speak to someone while you are making your reservation and pick out your room in advance. I had no inkling when I made our reservation that we would be staying in the building's armpit. These rooms should be reserved for drunks who can't drive home and wouldn't mind the noise and lack of privacy. (BTW, we are not new to the funky fun of McMenamins. We stayed in the Elks Temple in Tacoma and had a blast. It was a much different experience.) read more

Yes, McMenamins food and beer are not so great and overpriced for usually lackluster service - BUT - the venues are amazing and Grand Lodge is no exception. This was my first time staying at a McMenamins hotel and it was fun. I had been expecting the place to be packed on a Friday night but it was surprisingly quiet - even the staff mentioned they were wondering where the crowds were - but lucky for us that meant a quieter stay and more room to roam. We had a blast wandering the halls and taking in the artwork. We saw a movie - fun - service was quite slow even in getting drinks but that's what you expect from McMenamins! During our time here, we got to explore all three floors, most of the grounds and all of the little bars scattered throughout. The soaking pool was great - filled with some rather tipsy folks at night - but it was serene in the morning and very empty. Room-wise we opted for a king with a private bath. Our room was on the second floor and fairly quiet. The bathroom was very spacious. Our only complaint really is that the shower booth just had a really short curtain and a low divider between the shower and rest of bathroom so water was splashing everywhere. I'd opt for the private bath again just out of preference. Staff were super friendly - one kind person helped us find the secret room and staircase without even us having to ask. Overall we had a great stay - I'd do again but maybe for two nights to enjoy everything longer! read more

All of them come with a bathroom in the room versus having to share like some of the original rooms. They each have a special design. We got one of the larger rooms that had a full size sofa in it. It was a great room and made the visit so much more enjoyable. Whether or not you are a McMenamins regular, you should check out this hotel. Great food service... Unfortunately had a bad experience yesterday and am afraid to go back. Friend and I had our helmets stolen off of our motorcycles while parked in the main parking lot from 6-7p. The lady at the front seemed to almost be laughing at us when we asked if they had cameras on the parking lot... And seemed surprised when we wanted to have the police called to file a report. We had over $1k in equip stolen during the 1 hour we were in the restaurant. read more

We did a Day Pass, from 10-3, for my mom and my two kids and I. We booked our hour at The Soaking Pool and reserved a table at The Ironworks Grill ahead of time, as the staff informed me that they fill up very quick. We arrived a bit late at 10:20 and checked in very easily. We had a queen room with a private bathroom and got changed and grabbed a mimosa (for the adults,) and headed to the pool. Since it's still cold out (I think it was 40 maybe yesterday morning around 11,) there was snow ON the grounds around the pool, it was a chilly walk out. BUT it was amazing in the pool. There was one other family there so we stayed at one end while they stayed at the other. It was a perfect pool time for my kids. They swam, stayed warm and played. The only negative was that we didn't have enough towels. The front desk only had one to give me and told me to come back in 5 minutes (why would I want to do that and lose out on pool time?) I thought that was pretty poor planning on their part as they knew we had the time reserved and how many people. So that was their bad for the level of service. Our lunch at Ironworks was so nice. It was quiet at the restaurant and there were 3 other parties all spaced very far apart from one another. It felt safe and clean. We had two vegan burgers, an appetizer of Cajun tots, a vegan pizza with chao cheese and a hummus plate without feta. The kids also got Shirley Temples to drink. Our drinks took a LONG time to come out but we had water and our tots came pretty quickly after the drinks. Everything was very good and so was our server. After lunch we went in search of finding the riddle and the kids loved that. It was a great day and well worth it! Highly suggest a day pass! All the rooms are different from each other and have a different theme based around historical figures of the people that were in this building a long time ago in Forest Grove, last but not least there are many locations throughout Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, none are the same. Food is great and the best part is they have their own distillery and brewery on the premises. Stayed here after a show and it was very decent! I loved the fact that one could check in and relax before the show, walk over and see the show thn walk back and relax again. It was super rowdy for a few hours after the show ended, BUT it is to be expected. Probably a bummer for people who didn't attend the show. You have a few different bars, great atmosphere, and typically a cool busy environment that forest grove needs. I'm a local food expert and the food was okay. I really enjoyed the Cajun tots as they are a comfort classics. The burger was good. It is so easy to expect more from it with the price and location. The burger should be something to look forward to for the ironworks grill. Especially the most expensive burger in the menu. It seemed just ok. What an incredible place! Without knowing all of the history of the venue, seems to be a combination of some sort of hospital and Masonic Lodge. The colossal building and its sprawling grounds include myriad hidden treasures, from a garden and a chicken coop, to several hidden patios and picnic areas. You can have a drink on one of many balconies on several floors, the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, there's a movie theater (currently closed due to COVID), a soaking pool (suffering a similar fate, but with occasional limited access to hotel guests) and a full service spa. Not to mention free bars, and if you look carefully in the attic, at least two hidden rooms of which I am aware. My wife and I stopped in on the way back from a nearby sake brewery, are we ended up spending most of the day exploring and enjoying the food, the drinks and the venue. We even made a few casual friends while we were here. I think we are going to come back and spend a birthday or holiday here overnight. Also, is it haunted? Some people seem to think so. Check out the Ghost Log at the front desk. Whatever you may think about chain restaurants and the like, McMenamins knows what the heck they are doing. They pour love and quality into all of their venues. This is among their best. Huge bonus: dog-friendly! read more

I called to see if they had AC in the Compass Theatre but the person answering couldn't tell me. So I bought tickets anyways. We went and watched a movie and it was $30 for 3 of us which is not horrible and we planned to eat dinner there and did not expect that to cost $71. Due to heat they had a special menu so two bacon Mac and cheeses and a Turkey sandwich and tots with 3 waters was insanity. $100 to go catch a movie and have dinner. We will go back for a movie but won't buy food and will eat before we go because We definitely won't be "affording" or spending that much for dinner and a movie especially when the food is not that great, McDonald's before would have been cheaper. read more
