There are moments in a critic's life when hope must give way to harsh truth. Tonight, at McMenamins North Bank, that moment arrived with my first bite. The Mushroom Grilled Cheese promised rustic comfort; instead, it offered a lukewarm betrayal. The bread, though toasted, bore only a faint crust of butter--more suggestion than indulgence--and the cheese within remained stubbornly unmelted, clinging to its shape like a memory of better times. The cremini mushrooms, meant to be the sandwich's earthy heart, were undercooked and pallid, their flavor lost between two timid slices of bread. To add insult to injury, an unwelcome strand of hair lay curled against the grain--an unappetizing souvenir of carelessness. Accompanying the sandwich were fries that might once have been crisp, now languishing cold and limp on the plate. They arrived as though they had endured a long, lonely wait under a heat lamp that had long since gone on break. Cocktails, too, betrayed their promise. The martini--ordered "shaken hard, extra dirty, with an ounce of olive brine"--arrived in a glass that had merely been nudged, its clarity unblemished by brine, its warmth unmarked by vigor. The whiskey sour, burdened by a charge for egg white, offered only a token whisper of foam atop a sour spirit, as if the egg itself had forgotten its role. Outside, the setting by the river might have lent enchantment, if only the patio had been equipped for human comfort. No heaters, no flicker of candles--only mosquitoes, industrious and insistent, reminding one that nature need not be tamed to be hostile. In the end, McMenamins North Bank serves a masterclass in unfulfilled potential. Here was a meal that arrived with ambition but collapsed under its own neglect. Such an evening earns no more than a single star--and little else. read more

It was a beautiful day today so we decided we had to get dinner outside--what better place than McMenamins North Bank? This is by far my favorite Eugene McMenamins location based purely on its proximity to the river. Of course, there was a 45 minute wait for the patio because everyone else had the same idea, but it was worth it to sit outside and enjoy the view. I ordered the cider flight (the seasonal flavor right now is a blood orange ginger cider) and the two piece fish and chips. Fish pieces were a bit small for the $18.50 price tag, but they were really good and cooked perfectly. My fiancé ordered a beer and the Captain Neon burger. He said he expected a stronger bleu cheese flavor but that the burger was delicious nonetheless. We also split the Phil's Salted Caramel Tart which was okay. It was really hard and not necessarily what I expected, but the homemade whipped cream saved the day! We enjoy McMenamins in general and love that each location is a bit different from the others. The food was terrible. Frozen fish and fries. Dumped on a plate. Two small unidentifiable lumps of deep fried mush and a gigatintic pile of cold fries. Lemon squeezed into water with no sugar touted as lemonade, and teaspoon of coleslaw for 24 dollars. Such a shame for a beautiful location. read more

Well, hadn't been here since before covid, it was a place we loved to take out of town visitors. It's got a beautiful outside seating next to the Willamette river and the inside is very eclectic, funky and fun. Todays visit was very disappointing as far as the food quality, a shock to say the least. The alleged hand battered fish was overcooked and looked like hand pulled from the freezer, chips (french-fries on both orders) were heat lamp warm. My burger was cooked ok but the toppings (onion/peppers/schrooms) were very sparse, the bun was dry (like out of the package for a while type dry) Service was just ok, was the start of the dinner crush. Well this was a letdown but we will try again (not soon though). read more

If I had know about the view and beautiful river, we would have sat outside. I couldn't decide between 2 or 3 stars so I decided to be generous and give them one more than I feel they deserve. The only reason to eat here is for the river views. The food was mediocre and very over priced. Our service was not good, after our order was dropped off there was so sign from our server again. We had to wait an awkward amount of time before finally asking for the check. I would not recommend or visit here again. read more

What a pleasant find! We biked past here and it smelled so good we came back later for lunch. Right on the river it was a perfect day to sit on the patio. Loved the cider and beer flights plus a nice selection of appetizers that made a good shared meal. The standout in my cider flight was the lavender cider. Heady aroma and taste. In hubby's beer flight, the spicy sour was great. We'll be back next visit to this cute town. read more

Stopped in here while our boys were meeting with coaches at UO. Placed an order for drinksuffering bastard and the berries and cream. Was looking for a place to have a Bloody Mary this morning and we love this place. We normally have a great spot and great service this time we were sat in a corner table right next to a bus tub and where a server station was and extra chairs where they would reach over me to get them. Luckily I know this place can be wonderful just this time unfortunately could have been better. The Bloody Mary was good and aromatic! The burger with a fried egg was delicious! We had a leisurely stop at McMenamins on the north bank of the river. The location is outstanding especially if you sit outside, literally right at the edge - a river view for all tables. We were looking for a small bite and a drink and found their menu a bit limited for this if you're looking for a light or vegetarian bite. We loved their Cajun Tators, the Mini Sliders were ok, and the tomato basil soup was unusual and not our favorite. The location gets a 4 star but the menu a three. read more

This is a great location for a McMenamins! Sitting at a table overlooking the river, we enjoyed our meals while watching the view. the Staff was very efficient, had some great menu recommendations, and make us feel welcome. I ordered the Kahlua Pork - very tasty! The macaroni salad was fantastic as well. We shared a beer sampler, which gave us a chance to taste some good McMenamins seasonals we hadn't had yet. Plenty of parking here - very convenient. We took a stroll on the riverwalk while waiting for the place to open. Decided to stop in and enjoy some root-beer floats, but also ended up with some food. We sat inside but they have a lovely patio on the Willamette River. We sat in the bar, which was fun. Kinda like a tiki bar feel. The cheeseburger sliders were delicious along with their fries. Don't forget to save some room for root-beer floats. Super good especially on a hot day! I've also had their elk burger which is also very good. Great selection of food choices from salads to hamburgers. Plus a good selection of drinks. The coconut curry chicken soup, drank the last bite!! Should have stopped there at the appetizer's. Had a fantastic dinner here on Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Everything that was supposed to be hot was hot when it arrived at our table. The tots were too hot to eat when Hunter first served them. We forgot to ask for Cajun and having hot crispy tots made up for our forgetfulness. The fries with our entrees were also hot and crisp when served. Yeah, I know, tots and fries?!? Well, most of them came home with us in a box. I know how to recycle them into something tasty and even a little healthy. On the other end of the thermometer reading, our salads were cold, crisp, and delicious. The service was great! Hunter was attentive but not hovering, and never once said, "How is the food tasting?" It had been about a year and a half -- hard to believe it had been so long -- since our last pre Duck football game meal here. If we'd known it was going to be so long a wait to dine-in, we might've made an excuse to dine here in those last couple months. Pandemic take-out is never as good as being here in person. read more

The unusual August rainstorm relegated us to eat inside, the first disappointment. The service was prompt and the server deftly and accurately divided the check among we mixed patrons. I ordered the ($20.25) backyard burger, which was good, but the greasiest sandwich ever. My wife had a ($13!) glass of wine and a cheese/mushroom sandwich, which she said was very good. Brought my girlfriend here on New Year's Eve before we went to a shindig later in the evening. It looks nice from the outside. The inside is spacious and clean, but the first thing you will notice is the lighting. It is obvious that they are trying to create an intimate atmosphere with the lower lighting levels, however, the lighting in skewed to a very low orange. All of the bulbs have an orange tint which makes pictures there look weird and makes the menus difficult to read. It wasn't busy the evening and time we went (around 7:30pm), so we sat ourselves. We decided very quickly that we would split a fish and chips and my girlfriend ordered a toasted marshmellow mixed drink of some kind. It was very good. I don't care much for alcohol generally, but I could taste what the drink was going for and for anyone that enjoys the flavor of liquor, this would have been a great drink. Since it was dark outside, we couldn't see much of the outside area. There is a river close by and you can see it a little bit when the lights hit it, but there isn't much to see at night. Inside, I couldn't tell what the theme was that the restaurant is going for. Murals on the walls of housing in one section and then tiki style references on other walls was confusing and I pointed that out to my girlfriend while we were there. The fish and chips were fairly decent. Fish was cooked well and had good flavor. I thought the fries were seasoned well and tasted great (my girlfriend thought they had too much seasoning). We chose the side salad option for the meal and the salad was on the main plate (not separate). Salad was small and not much more than some lettuce with a little cheese and far too much onion. The F&C and the one drink came out to nearly $30. It is a little spendy for what we got. Service was good -- although we noticed the hostess was also our waitress and even though it wasn't all that busy, she had to move around a lot to get to everyone and check on us. She was very polite and helpful and did check on us several times even though she had to cover everyone else that we could see eating that evening. She was certainly hustling and we appreciated the effort. Would I go back here again? Sure. I like the kind of atmosphere the restaurant is shooting for even if it is a little hard to see with the weird orange colored lighting. During the day it may be a different feel as the water would be visible outside and the lighting would be different. The mixed drink was very good and the food was decent to good, but a little on the pricey side for what you get. It would definitely be worth my time to try this place again during the daytime and give everything another once over. read more
