OMG!! My new favorite restaurant in Eugene!!! Did not have any high expectations, I just wanted a nice glass of wine and raw oysters. Of course, had my Yelp app handy and it found Bar Purlieu for me. I got there right at 4pm when they opened since it was a Friday night, 4th of July weekend so did not know if I was going to get a big crowd since I had no reservations. I ordered the following: House Chianti (excellent)!! regret that I did not take a picture of the bottle ($14) Bone Marrow Appetizer: melt in your mouth delicious ($19) Filet Mignon: delicious, it had a morel mushroom sauce and it was absolutely divine. I got it medium rare and it was perfect ($50) 6 Oyster's: very meaty and you need to ask for fresh horseradish and tabasco sauce. They only have 1 small bottle of tabasco sauce for the whole restaurant and they serve raw oysters... what??? that is insane!!! ($4.50 PER OYSTER-that is insane too but they were nice an meaty). I really wanted to love this place. I stopped by a few times before committing. I gave them every chance to impress me. Then I walked in and got a beautiful smile from the hostess. And then she vanished. Poof. Gone. Like she had somewhere better to be. I had to hunt someone down just to get a seat. Whatever. I have been treated worse. I came for one thing. Duck. And when I saw that $50 price tag, I thought, score. Finally, a place that understands my love for fancy bird. What I got was a dried out duck leg that could have passed for jerky. I am not exaggerating. I thought about offering it to my dog. Then I remembered I love my dog. The vegetables were sad. Soggy. Like they had been soaking in a bath all day. It was 6pm, not 10pm. There is no excuse. I did not even bother with the crème brûlée. No way in hell was I going to let them ruin my favorite dessert too. I have boundaries. So here is the thing. I LOVE this place, but this was a tasting menu gem I will now have to crave for the rest of my life because it isn't on the main menu. Looking for a place to grab a bite in a cocktail after a long day on the road we found Bar Purlieu. What a great spot! They were busy, and I suspect they always are, so we grabbed two spots at the bar and ordered dinner there. This gave us a great opportunity to watch the bartenders work their craft, and they're very good at it. We had a couple of amazing cocktails, including an espresso martini done with a French twist and we had excellent food. I can heartily recommend the duck confit. The ambience inside is set up to be reminiscent to a local French bistro and they pull it off nicely. Service is timely, friendly, and food is outstanding. I don't know why we don't see more French cuisine on the West Coast, so thanks to these folks for providing such a great option. read more

Of all the food served, the only dish that was hot was the mussel. As enticing as the menu describes the dishes to be, they show up on the table in a mess and disappointing taste. The breads were brick hard, the meat overcooked, the seasoning missing or overpowering in one component. I am not sure which of these dishes can even be considered french food or fine dining. We were sat outside on the sidewalk as a large party, and quite oftentimes overlooked in service. They had either forgotten our order or the utensils or water. read more

Short: Definitely disappointed - it's hard to make this review. Thanksgiving and my birthday were supposed to be memorable, but stomach pain made them unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, leaving me deeply disappointed. It wasn't all that. (1.5 stars) I attended a reservation for Thanksgiving and was served their Thanksgiving course which included three courses and a dessert. For an additional cost, it could come with wine pairings. I opted for one glass of wine based on the server's recommendation. Staff & Atmosphere: Firstly, I will say the staff are knowledgeable. The outer appearance gave a fairy forest bohemian feel. Inside, it seemed a bit deeper than outside, but given how busy it was due to the holiday, it felt cramped and almost claustrophobic. It was challenging to hear others and it was generally very loud. I really didn't like this because it did not feel intimate in any way. The food:Thanksgiving 3-course and dessert was $95/person, and it truly left a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the turkey roulade and the first course (both were delicious). The deviled eggs were soft and mouuse like and the turkey roulade was tender and succulent. But other than that, everything else truly was left to be a desired. While I can appreciate the mushroom stuffing as being different, and the vegetables (vegetable vinaigrette/roasted and mashed potatoes) tasted fresh. ((However I didn't appreciate my request not being fully fulfilled and with that I imagine with the servings and plates that were changed and provided, hoping that the kitchen prepared the third course differently.)) With the third course, I believe I got sick. The green bean casserole and bacon Jam taste it off (requested no pork, which includes bacon). At the end of the courses, I requested for a digestive,which was mistaken for a Moscato dessert wine. However, even the strong digestive (also recommended - very strong winter green taste) it couldn't help me so much and I am even writing this as I am in pain with my stomach issues. To note I have fasted for 24 hours after eating here and I've only been drinking electrolytes and peppermint tea. Due to the 2nd course (endive salad - it wasn't anything so spectacular) & 3rd course, while fresh, I expected more out of these courses,better use of spices, innovation, granted that it is a contemporary French bistro. I can say that with what portion of the dessert I ate (Pumpkin cheesecake with Dolce de Leche), it was very delicious, but the crust was very tough and difficult to cut through. Feedback: feedback was provided to Bar Purlieu, in hopes that others who also got sick could receive some reactivity so that this does not happen again. However, I was told that no one else got sick and that I got staph. Then, also wanting to read why it was stated that a lot to be desired for $100 a person. Before visiting Eugene for OCF, I found this place on Yelp and luckily it did not disappoint! After reading an article about the owners and the restaurant, I made a reservation right away. French inspired food with a changing menu, it's best to share dishes. It's casual, yet fancy. Our server, Claire, was helpful and curated all our choices nicely. We started with bread and butter, little gem salad, and some escargots. Bread was okay, needed some sea salt. The salad was phenomenal - fresh, crisp - loved the pistachio streusel! My partner tried escargot for the first time and went back for more. They were the best I've ever had! Grilled zucchini with walnut butter & blue cheese dressing was an excellent combination! I would order again. Seared scallops were a little small, but seared well! I liked the dish, but I wouldn't order again if still the tomato sauce. The stars of the show were definitely the mussels and the mushroom tart! Wow!! I was hesitant on the mussels, but mixed with the green coconut curry and tomatoes, it was perfect to us. The cream sauce on the tart makes you want to lick the plate! I could eat that for breakfast or dinner. I could also drink a gallon of the Barbera red wine. The Bird of Prey drink was delicious, slightly reminiscent of Dr. Pepper. For dessert, we had the pistachio pie with chocolate ganache - absolutely divine! We noticed the couple next to us get a slice earlier, and I will say not all slices seemed created equal - as ours was a sliver in comparison - but we didn't need more in the end anyways. I was pretty bummed their espresso maker was down, because that would have been the perfect ending to a phenomenal meal. Claire did try to make up for it with a tasty pour over. Overall, fantastic! 10/10 would recommend you eat here. Side note: Our table was right next to the window and under a ledge where they keep all the plates and silverware - so staff kept coming right above us - I can't say I loved that table. read more

This place was such a nice surprise while we were in Eugene. The service was extremely attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The floral arrangements were also beautiful. Our server recommended the inlet oysters to us and they were melt in your mouth creamy - some of our favorite oysters ever. The pork belly and octopus also paired together so nicely. I arrived at the tail end of happy hour and had the Mushroom Tarte and a glass of their house red wine. The wine (a Côte du Rhone) was probably the best house red I've ever had. The tarte was delicious - chock full of mushrooms, including morels, and topped with a light Dijon mustard cream sauce. While mustard can easily overpower a sauce, it was actually quite subtle and understated. The service was prompt and very friendly, too. And the atmosphere was nice and cozy. This was my first visit to Bar Purlieu. It most certainly won't be my last. read more

Stopped here on a drive back from California and boy was this such a welcome break. The food was absolutely incredible. We tried the oysters, scallops, mushroom tart, halibut, and bread and butter. Honestly I'm not sure which one was my favorite because it was all so good BUT if I had to choose it would be the scallops. We also tried their "milk" (creme anglaise) and cookies as well as the chocolate tarte - they were both fine. However I think I would've chosen another option off their menu and skipped desserts. The service was top notch. Very attentive despite having a pretty full restaurant. I think this will be a new go to on our trips through Eugene. Out getting our passport stamps for McMenamins with no real plans for food or where we were going to stay. I could not find reservations for any place good, so I called these guys and they found us a seat on a busy Saturday night. So awesome!! Food was amazing, the best frog legs I have ever had and I am not really a frog leg guy. Service was great, nice selection of wine and a nice warm atmosphere. Came here for dinner, got seated quickly and had amazing service throughout our meal. All our food tasted very good, I just had personally hoped for larger portion sizes throughout. We got bread and butter to start, where a party of two was given 5 crustinis and 2 small pieces of whole wheat to share. It was the same for our entire meal. It was also pretty loud in there, could barely hear the person right in front of me. Overall, it was decorated really nice, my waitress was also very sweet and professional, the food was really good, but just really small portion sizes and it was really loud music very distracting. Well, the folks at Bar Purlieu did it again. We celebrated there with a special prix fixe Thanksgiving meal. Everything was excellent from the spicy deviled eggs with fish roe on top to the perfectly baked game hen. We chose to also have the wine pairing with each course. Owner and sommelier extraordinaire, Laura, chose the perfect wines to complement the courses. There was absolutely enough food, such that I had leftovers. The evening held two separate seatings and everything seemed to run smoothly. I know they're going to have a special meal with wine tastings coming up in December. Our first dinner at Bar Purlieu was splendid tonight. The server was warm and friendly as she greeted us and told us about the night's specials. But it wasn't that thing where you smile uncomfortably and wish they would just stop talking. Because she was telling us about the seasonal items on the night's menu. And it sounded terrific. Terrific it was. We started with a plate of escargot, something we just love. It was loaded with garlic, and she set out some flaky sea salt to sprinkle on it - nice call. I ordered a cocktail of cold brew, orgeat, cream and nutmeg. It was wonderful. Hubby ordered something fruity, and it was delicious. We each had scallops which came with delicata squash, chanterelle, ver Hollandaise (ohmygawd), sea grape, fennel, and radish. It was divine. We got to sit outside. Been back two more times, and it's been solid, though with a few disappointments: the bread (from bread & butter as well as on the side of mussels) tastes very dry/almost stale, and the mussel sauce tastes overly creamy to me. The scallops on my most recent visit were a little overdone and overly salted, too. That said, still one of the better restaurants in Eugene (see prior comments). read more

I used to think this was the best restaurant in Eugene, not anymore. We tried the tasting menu (I'd been many times, but never tried it). Total mistake. While my date doesn't eat pork, I do - and I wish I'd said I don't either. Of the five courses we were served, only the dessert was remotely decent. My date got octopus for her first course, which looked tasty - what I had was very one note (pork belly). Neither of us could even stomach the fennel and supposed fish (mackerel?) dish - we like strong flavors - but not like that. With all that said, the servers were amazing, and the only reason I'm eating this higher than 1 star. I will be back, but I'll never make the mistake of trusting the chef there again. read more

This was a nice find during a weekend in Eugene. It's a cute small bistro with some seating outdoors as well as a small indoor dining area. The space is sweet and comfortable, with a lively conversation level -- not too loud, but also not too quiet. Definitely a place you can dress up or dress down and still enjoy an elevated meal. I ordered the larger size of the scallops entree, which is good because I imagine the small would have been too small (2 scallops vs 5 scallops). It was a nice dish, with lots of textures and flavors that worked well together. My husband ordered the duck. It was nicely executed, but was a small portion. Overall, I think the prices are high for the size of the portions and the quality of the dishes. But I'd definitely go here again, as I found the quality to still be higher than other restaurants I've been to in Eugene (we were happy to have a nice meal here after a terrible lunch at a popular spot in town that I won't name). Service was spotty. Most of the servers were friendly, but the timing was off. We were left for long periods of time without service, which just meant we saved money by not ordering more wine and dessert :) The location is great, and there is street parking around the area. If you're in Eugene, check out Bar Purlieu. I'd give it four and a half stars if we could give half stars! Not perfect, but a totally enjoyable dinner spot. read more
