The chicken was a bit overcooked, but still has the seasonings to make it taste good. We had to wait a while for service, which is a usual McMenamins program. Arrived to an empty restaurant on a weekday night well before closing, was kind of worried for a minute. Sat at the bar, had good conversation with the bartender. Learned a little history on the McMenamins name and how they operate in the area. Today I was going Mini golfing and I wanted to get some food on the way with my family. We ended up getting this place, which was a grave mistake. A lot of us got the chicken tenders and 2/5 dishes came with multiple hairs in the food. It was just the regular old frozen chicken tenders, but these were 22 dollars! This is a cute small location! Just as most McMenamins, the ambience is amazing. Cozy, quirky and also stylish! The bartender was very friendly and easy to talk too. In reading the menu we thought it said 23.00 for the bottle of wine but to find out when we got the check that the $23.00 price was if you took the bottle to go but if you drank it there with your meal it was 37.00. It gets even worse. We gave this location another chance since it's near our home. We arrived and see a sign that says "please wait to be seated" and we stand in the entry way for over 10 minutes before either of the servers or bartender say hello or even acknowledge us. Another 5 go by after they say "it's going to be a little bit" before they tell us to seat ourselves at the table right next to the front door. What is going on? Fast forward. Our food arrives after a 30 minute wait and neither of our plates had the dressing/dip we were prompted for upon placing the order. Our server straight up doesn't come back for 20 minutes as she is too busy stocking glassware instead of taking care of her tables or cleaning the mostly empty and very dirty pub. Such a strange priority. Upon paying I asked if they were short-handed and got a response of "no, this is a pretty normal Monday night for us". We will not be back. This is not the most exciting McMenamins location (in a modern strip mall,) but the customer service and food/drink quality makes up for it. My only major gripe, though this extends to all McMenamin locations, is that they always understaff and this affects wait times. This is not a Covid specific issue too, this has been an issue going back many years before the pandemic. Not a huge deal since I always give myself plenty of time, but if you need to have a quick lunch or are waiting for a movie, you may want to give yourself plenty of time. The service here is excellent, and the gentleman who has helped us the last several times is truly amazing. I unfortunately did not catch his name, but he was funny, engaging and checked in on us multiple times (again, a rarity for McMenamins.) The cajun tots are delicious as always, and since becoming vegetarian, am quite happy with their veggie burger options (also, cheaper than standard burgers, which I'm a big fan of.) The interior is pretty standard for McMenamins- nothing notable or historic, but it's clean and reminds me of a Deadhead's basement. Beer is standard- I always go with the Rubinator (Ruby Red and Terminator Stout) because most of their other beers are dated or just flat-out bad. Every time we visit Sherwood we have to stop at McMenamins for their Cajun tater tots and their amazing beers and ciders. Their food is always great and the service is always great. We tried something new this trip and had a whiskey flight - INCREDIBLE! We loved the experience and we love this restaurant. Our aunt who always host us when we are in town got us a pack of their Cajun season to bring back with us to Arizona alongside two tshirts. We will representing in AZ. Wanting a quick lunch I came into Mcmenamins right at noon on a Friday and it wasn't busy as it seemed that my side of the restaurant already got their food. Clearly marked sign to seat myself and was given water and the menu right away, also was told the soups of the day from the bartender, as I sat very close to the bar. The bartender was really helpful on suggesting menu items as I was thinking the mac and cheese, which she said is suitable for one person but maybe not as filling as it comes with no sides. She suggested either the sandwiches or burgers. I got the Portland Dip ($12.50) which was a turkey sandwich with swiss cheese and grilled mushrooms, with what seemed like garlic aioli and au jus on the side for sauces, and tater tots as my side. After I ordered condiments of ketchup and mustard came out right away. All was going great until it came down to waiting for my food, it took almost 30 minutes! Once the food arrived, the bread wasn't very warm and the sandwich itself wasn't anything extraoridinary. A thin layer of turkey and mushrooms. The garlic aioli wasn't too salty and was a nice pairing with the sandwich. With the price of 12.50, before tip I feel like I should have gotten something more filling like the fish and chips or a burger. It just seemed a little pricey for what I thought I was getting. I was not checked in on or anything after receiving my meal, though I didn't need anything. Even after eating I had to wait quite a bit, 10 plus minutes to receive my check (from a different server) as the servers walked by multiple times, I even put my plate to the side- by this time it was five minutes until 1pm! From what I gathered, the staff does great in seating and getting customers started and are really nice, but after you order it seems to take quite some time to receive your food. This location seems to be understaffed and hope things can change as the employees were smiling and gave off great energy. read more

Better than expected! We've been to a ton of McMenamins - if you also have, you know what to expect - a decent menu of good-quality pub fare, mediocre beers, OK service, and super-cool surroundings. This one has the cool surroundings, better-than-average pub fare (got the Communication Breakdown burger and tots), and the drinks were much better than expected. Meh.. what can I say? Typical MecMenamins with the same fare they have at each one. The only thing that changes is the decor. I usually stop in here when in the area to see my friend or on the way to somewhere but I don't usually go in here because of the location. I can't say I like McMenmins for the drinks, they always pour sad looking drinks, a vodka on the rocks is always in a tiny little glass, I always tend to judge on that alone. Food is the same as most of the others and very rarely do I really feel the gusto to eat here and only do if meeting a big group here or friends want to meet here. We stopped here as a meet in the middle place while running errands. There was some tasty happy hour food. Yum! This place is dead at noon on a weekday and the service and food is just as great as you can get at any McMenamins. The exterior is ugly and could basically deter you from ever stepping foot inside, but the interior is decorated like any other McMenamins, artsy with the pub flair of Europe. I went here early evening yesterday. There were about 4 customers in the restaurant, all put one party had already received their food. I ordered a chicken Aztec salad to go and waited 40 minutes for it to be prepared. When I unpacked it at home, it was literally lettuce with a few tortilla strips and a hand full of shredded cheese. No dressing on it at all, just dry lettuce. I had no salad dressing at home, so I had to get back in the car and go to the store. I have no idea why it took 40 minutes to dump lettuce in a box. Out of all the mcmenamins I've been to, this one is the only one that charges me an extra dollar for sweet potato tots or fries - and gives me a whole lot less. That's why the low stars Honestly - if they would have been more generous or just didn't have this extra charge on a $12 Plate, it may have been ok. This whole experience was kinda off-putting! When I asked to speak with the manager about it, she was like "oh yeah, i am the manager here and we always charge up-charge, and in the three years I've worked here that's been the case. The other mcmenamins are just giving us a bad name". I'm like "ok, well there is a lot less than I get here typically. But ok" I'm just wondering why the other mcmenamins not charging me....is my problem, as a customer? I've been coming to ALL the mcmenamins for more years than this manager has been working here - and a three time passport holder - so I've been to them all several times. I just think it's wrong not to be consistent. I love their food, but feeling a little cheated tonite. Even the waitress was a little off-putting. She lacked genuine respect - and her démener was like she was annoyed. When I asked for a to-go container and a side of the sauce - she brought me two containers - one for the food and the other for the very small amount of sauce I had left. I had to go up to the bar and ask for the side of sauce again. She scoffed and went and got me the sauce. That and Half the order of sweet potato tots, with a buck up-charge....Just seems like a nickel and dime and lack-of-customer Service kinda thing...and seriously....that's never been my experience with this chain - until now. So, yeah, I get the challenges of staying in business during COVID and how tough it must be to make the money work out. This was actually a pretty decent establishment in the very early days of the COVID reopening but it has gone steadily downhill--dare I say speeding fast like a go kart filled with antique anvils kind of downhill. Maybe the money's tight at the McM and they're trimming staff right to the point of pain and then a little bit more. I can't say for sure that's the case, but it's what it looks like to me. The previous visit, we were warned that the kitchen was overwhelmed by to-go orders and that the wait could be longer than normal. Fine, the beer is cold and tasty, and there appears to be plenty of it. No problem. Indeed, the food took a long time to come out and the family seated near us complained pretty bitterly about how long they had to wait. The last visit, and I do expect this to be my LAST visit there, we were seated relatively quickly. This was a lovely and warm Friday early evening and all the outdoor tables were full, as were about half of the available tables inside. We, just the two of us, took a table inside. I saw few wait staff. After 15 minutes with NO ONE coming to say hello, take a drink order...anything...we left. The waitress appeared well practiced in the art of deflection. It looked like it was going to be one of those nights for bad service. Shame, too, because the Aztec salad it pretty tasty, they have a nice selection of beer, and the fries are quite good. I have been generally happy with McM's food (within the expectations of a pub), but the really uneven and (lately) really crappy service makes the Sherwood location seem like a terrible afterthought. Perhaps, more accurately, just a sad outpost on the far, far southwest border of Portland (where the trains don't run), a cleverly marketed establishment left to wither and die in some put-up-over-the-weekend 1990s strip mall. Such a sad end. If you want pub grub, try Clancy's in downtown Sherwood. There's some hate for them here on Yelp, but my experience has been universally good.
