I've deliberated about MCX Miramar for a long time, and how I should rate it. On the one hand, it's an MCX just like you would expect at any major base. So there aren't any issues there. On the other hand there has always been something about this MCX that has been a little off to me. This weekend I finally put was able to put my finger on what exactly that was. The first thing about this MCX is that it is oddly laid out. The building is wider than it is deep, and this lends itself to a strange feeling layout to the store and it's various departments The other thing is the registers are strangely located, and there are very few of them, so even when the MCX isn't very busy it takes a while to get through the checkout line. The last thing is the hours. Maybe they're exactly the same as other bases that I've been on, but the hours here seem very strange. They don't seem to make a lot of sense, and they seem to close very early. Also, the barber shop here it closes at unreasonable hours all the time. The complex itself is also not super convenient to get to, and it's pretty spread out once you get inside of it, with a lot of medians between the different avenues and lanes you're going to try to get to. Wow! The prices are really high! But with the introduction of the low interest credit card the Military Star card I'm not surprised! The pricing is not geared toward the lower ranks but rather the officers. Or they can do layaway if that is still offered. Even though it's tax free it is still high. Prices are a lot better at Burlington, TJ Maxx, Ross, or Kohl's as far as home decor and clothes are concerned. On the upside this place is huge and there is a large selection of clothing, household goods, televisions, small appliances, etc. It is very bright and clean. They have started to display Christmas decorations and trees. But not all have pricing. I was shocked that the ones that had the stickers were ridiculously overpriced!! A cute wooden snowman about 5" was $24.99! What? Please allow me to go to the thrift shop! There is a huge collection of designer purses/bags like Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Frye, Brahmin, Patricia Nash, etc. I was shocked to see LV there! Sorry but I cannot see myself buying with my hard earned money an LV purse at that exorbitant price. My money can be better spent elsewhere but not knocking anybody else that has lavish taste (like my sister ) and can easily afford it! It's very clean, bright, and organized. When I was peering at the plethora of designer purses (hubby was getting nervous-LOL!) and internally gasping at the high prices I noticed 2 of the employees watching me. Neither came over to offer assistance. It felt more like they were judging me just by their demeanor & body language. I can afford to buy one of these luxury bags but refuse to waste my money just for some semblance of status. I prefer to bargain shop so unless they have a great sale here I doubt that I would return. read more

Honestly, for a place that is tax free, supports our Protectors of our freedom to be selfish and self indulgent, and exclusive for those that served, but respected and shunned for not giving your life or still shopping at a military-discount because it's where we are SUPPOSE to feel welcomed. This is not a positive review, but a real point of view from a son that had to grow up without my dad being a constant. Instead, I always eat internally to accept that my dad could be the next coffin that arrives on the WestCoast. Gratefully and miraculously, I am still incensed and ying-and-yang'd positively relieved. My dad retired and earned the right to be called a MasterChief. Yet he still gets waved through like he doesn't matter. Anyway, MCX. A hard sell to no tax exclusive and current items to keep our troops and veterans up-to-date with world wide current events and trends. Love this place so much, when the cashier makes my dad and I feel like we are poor for politely acknowledging her sales pitch of shame for not taking the MCX additional warranty. While shopping for my mother on Mother's Dad. She was really good, but honestly, I felt a little pissed. So, when I asked, "MasterChief, after retiring from serving 40+ years on multiple Carriers and now retiring from General Atomics are you going to be able to be a HAPPY civilian like myself that works as a Temp at UCSD?" Man I was infuriated I felt the need to justify our right to not be talked into some upSell. Anyway, I realized she was just doing her job, so, then I complimented outrageously on her amazing sales talent and focus of running the pre-constructed sales training Script after my obvious display of, "losing my cool," I tactfully but pointedly, stated we're financially better off than most retired Military Vets and their family. I digress, please accept my apologies. This is definitely a wonderful place to browse and carouse. The personnel and staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and AMAZING at what they do, so, just a little caution, know what you want and buy only what you can reasonably afford. This place was my Best Buy, Fry's, Hallmark, Men's Warehouse, Candy Shop, snacks for parties and Gaming Nights, and a place where I met some people I wish I still was in contact with.... It's seems like this is just a typical, "One Stop Shop," place, but it's much more. If you ever were in a different country, you'll find people and necessities that make you proud to be American. A nostalgia that you will miss and over-indulge as you embrace your foreign surroundings. This place represents more than we see and take for granted. Support our military bases and businesses, the families that are in unfamiliar territory and yet seem so a like the locals but will never feel at ease, and the people that take minimum wage to maintain that welcoming and yet American capitalism and inclusiveness unique to being a representative of the USA. If and when I can afford it by getting to where I am working my tail off to get too, I promise I will come back and ALWAYS buy the additional warranty!! read more

I was at the MCX today in the Audio/Video area and I heard Sarah providing exceptional service to another customer. I then asked Sarah about the scratch off promo and she explained it in detail and she offered another promotion which potentially was better if I spent over $100. Sarah provided the same exceptional service to me when I took my new frying pan for her to ring up. Yes she works in the Audio/Video department but felt more comfortable with her assisting me. She needs to share her enthusiasm and outlook on customer service to her fellow team members! We are lucky to have her as an employee but MCX should be grateful that she works there as well. read more

Today 9/20/18 I drove about an hour to get here. I usually get my family's shoes here. I don't usually purchase unless there's a sale going on. Today, practically all the shoes were on sale, as the signs indicated 20% off. When I asked the lady in the shoe Dept. to scan 2 pairs of shoes, she told me none of them were on sale. Clearly, 20% signs all over your shoe Dept. A customer passing by whispered to me, that the clerk will make the 20% adjustment at the register. Sure enough, no sale price showed up and I had to encourage the clerk to look it up. New Balance kids shoe was in fact 20% off. Whew! Now the Under Armour Woman's HOVR SONIC had an MSRP of $100 but rang up at $102.99!!! LOL! This exchange is trying to charge its Patrons ABOVE manufacturers suggested retail!!!! MILITARY PERSONNEL and DEPENDENTS, B E W A R E ! Our families do not need to pay more than our civilian counterparts. I know these people (Directors, Buyers, etc) think they do us a favor by not charging us taxes but no way is that ever going to predicate my reason to purchase on the base. I Walked out on those shoes even though the Manager told the clerk to reduce it to MSRP of $100. That was a big slap in the face! LOL! So now I suppose I'm supposed to feel better! HA! The customer service in this place is terrible. Purchased my bridal wedding set here and decided to have it upgraded a week later. Found out I was never given the certificate of authentication and was supposed to be offer insurance on it which I wasn't. I only found out thanks to the lovely ladies at 32nd NEX. I have been calling for the manager Femi for weeks now trying to get an update on my refund on the appraisal. NO RESPONSE! I purchased my upgrade at NEX and returned the other set back to MCX that same day since they wouldn't give us the IGI# for the NEX to take the ring in. I 100% have to agree with the others on the negative reviews regarding customer service (December 11th, 2023 in between 1800-1830 and was looking for a specific household item). I went to the front registers and briefly spoke with an unpleasantly rude, African American woman with long hair (did not see her name tag). Her reply to my asking if they had the item was a vague "Yeah, no." There was no effort to even look at an inventory or ask another worker, stellar customer service! Also, the gentleman who I was in line with at first at the tobacco counter looked as if he wanted to be anywhere but at work. They both came across as completely disinterested in helping customers. The Mcx needs employees who are actually enthusiastic about their job/life and not ones who are clock watchers and have no desire to positively interact with customers, who by the way are active duty service members and veterans. If you want to act rude and go through the motions at work, go get a job off base where there are no standards. Do better MCX. read more

***Pre/During COVID-19 Visit*** I practically grew up here back in the day when it was still called NAS Miramar. I remember being in awe of how big the place was and always running into high school classmates when I went after school. It's definitely surreal going back now as a military myself. The place is huge and it's got the home and garden section right next to it. You'll find pretty much everything and anything here with the food court and the commissary right next door. I went during the holiday season so it gets very packed during then. They have a really good electronics and men's department and I've been one of the lucky ones to get some good deals here. Remember to mask up as all federal installations still require you to wear a mask while indoors. read more

Date of visit: March 4, 2017 As a Navy brat whose folks were stationed throughout their career in San Diego, one of the things I miss about not having full access to Miramar is being able to go to the Navy/Marine Exchange. (Though I'm in civil service, my base access only allows me to use the movie theater and gas station at most.) However, one of my dad's hobbies in retirement is checking out the sales there on a regular basis... and when he saw that there were suits on clearance and knowing how I needed one, wrangled me into going with him (I can get into the Exchange and Commissary as a guest of an active duty/adult dependent/retired person). Though the MCX is a bit smaller than I remember it, I was surprised at how clean and organized it is, albeit with a selection that isn't as expansive as, oh, say, Target or Walmart. We found the suit my dad was looking at, and it fit perfectly. And of course, no sales tax! There's plenty of parking, and the staff are pretty friendly. read more

I go to this exchange at least twice or 3 times a week. It's convenient, it's cheap, and basically all the stuff I need is located here. And there are sub-stores that are part of the main exchange such as the 2 gas stations, mini-mart and the furniture store. Those locations are scattered throughout the military base. What's also cool is that not only the prices are cheap enough, but when they ring you up on your purchases, some stuff mysteriously become cheaper. Yah, they accept coupons too, and yes, they match prices too. Just bring in the ad, and they will give you the price difference. And again...no sales tax!!! The main exchange complex also has a Red Box outside, home and garden section, a watch repair shop, a flower shop and a dry cleaner. Inside, there is barber/salon section too. Next door is a food court and the commissary. So, if you've never been in an exchange before, it's like going to a Target and Sears combined, but cheaper, cleaner, and no random clothes on the floor. And the staff actually is there to help you out. And if you're filipino, you get hook-ups from the mafia. read more

I love the exchange. The clothes, the shoes, the electronics, and NO SALES TAX! I've been coming to this particular exchange ever since I was a kid. The remodel of this place made it ten times better. Very clean and spacious. I can't come here by myself anymore since I am so old but I can have my parents take me when I want to go! I had to take a star off because of their customer service. Came to look for a camera because my mom needed a replacement. The lady kept insisting to take our time. They eventually came to closing time and some other guy was still helping us out because the lady was too busy at the end of the day to help us when we picked a camera out. The lady then made it a point to say that it was 5 min after closing and it was time for us to leave. We stood there and was ready for help like 10 minutes before closing and she didn't want to help us! Another star off because of the hours. I don't like places closing so early on weekdays. They closed at 7pm on us and very rude to kick us out. Other than that I still love going to the exchange. The customer service is below par. The staff is the main issue with the poor service. It feels like they take it personally if you return something and argue with you like it is their own money. I returned a gift and had to argue with the clerk to follow their own return policy. It was such a ordeal I will be returning all items purchased over the holiday season. Upon checking out, we were serviced by the operations manager Tricia who not only did not greet us but also gave my husband and I the nastiest look. I'm not 100% quite sure if it is a race issue because I am Asian and my husband is Caucasian and the operations manager Tricia is Caucasian as well and maybe she disapproved of interracial relationships or something of that sort. Because right after she practically chucked our bag at us, she greeted the Caucasian customer with a big smile and hello sir, how are you today? I knew race is still a huge issue even in the military today but I never realized that people who work on military bases are that narrowed-minded as well. The world already has enough problems. This is a great place to go for people in the services and their relatives. The selection here is great and the prices are really low too. Lots of good sales going on as well and having no sales tax is a major plus. The selection is very wide-ranging and is on par with any other well-known department stores. Amelia and Cody were really helpful, they were provided assistance with some of the Apple keyboards and told me about gift cards too. They also went through a wide variety of flatscreens and OLED and let me know the differences. Anyone who has the ability to shop here definitely should take advantage of it, it is such a great place and I can't think of a single downside to anything I've experienced. read more

Worker by the name of Xóchitl has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. On top of being rude from the get go, she refused to sell me something. Working at the pandora section, I pair of earrings caught my eye. My fiancé (active duty who was with me the whole time) wanted to get them for me but I wanted to pay them instead, she asked to see his id and the card he'd be paying with, then I informed her I'd be paying with Apple Pay. Then she took the earrings away and refused to sell them because I offered to pay. I understand civilians are not allowed to purchase without military id but my fiancé was there ??? I decided to leave the store but my fiancé when back for the earrings without me. When he went back alone, she still refused to sell the earrings because they were for me! She asked unnecessary questions "who are these for" "what card are you using to pay" "the card should be under your name." Very unprofessional. He still made the purchase and she even packaged them poorly !! read more

If you were to ask any military brat what is one big thing you miss about base access, odds are the Exchange or the Commissary would be heard. MCAS Miramar's Exchange is legit. They've got the usual stuff that you'd see at any Navy Exchange (or NEX for those who are down with the lingo), plus what seems to be (maybe by coincidence but maybe not) a more exhaustive selection of sporting goods / hiking goods / sports supplements. And about those supplements, I'm talking about a pretty nice stash... pre-workout stimulants, protein powders, recovery matrices, energy bars, creatine/beta-alanine, and I think I even saw (legal) testosterone boosters on their shelves. Whatever makes the Marines happy, I suppose! For you military dependents, I don't know if your parents are like mine, but whenever they visit San Diego, they have to make a visit to a military base. And, since I live in Mira Mesa, the base they frequent the most is Miramar. When I had base access back in college, Miramar was my daily grind, with buying groceries, cheap clothes, car washes, gasoline, and I think I've even attended Catholic Mass on base. The Exchange at Miramar, especially since remodeling a few years back, is a great place to get your goods, without worrying about whether or not you got a good deal, or if you have to pay sales tax. Congratulations to the electronics floor manager for turning away a $2200 sale today! Way to take away from our Marines and Sailors and effectively implement the MCCS Mission! I have never had a problem with any exchange, either Marine Corps, Navy, even Army. After declining to make this sale because of "policy" (there is nothing in MCCS Marine Corps Order that would have prevented me from spending $2k there), the employee threw away a hold receipt that had my personal information on it in a trash can where anybody could have grabbed it. I cheerfully let her know that throwing away PII without shredding it is a violation of their policy; she didn't like that very much. I know it's very annoying when a current or former employee of an establishment recites policy back to a bad customer service representative, but I was just floored that they would turn away a $2200 sale. I have been here a few times and every time I come here there are hardly any lines or packed. This MCX has plenty of parking and ways to get to it. They are always tax free here and competitive with all the other stores. They will match any advertised price as long as you show them the advertisement! This MCX carries all the basic necessities and gear you need. The A/C always seems to be lacking though. They also have a food court, red box, and barber shop. They can alter any type of uniforms or sew on name plates on gear as well. They will rush your order if you need it done the same day free charge, which extremely helped me! Plus they carry Army patterns as well, so not just for the Marines! Overall 4 stars because they should of fixed the A/C issues a long time ago. read more

Where else can you find that D&B purse you want, deodorant, big screen tv and pride gear?! MCX Honestly I prefer 32nd street but MCX is a good place to shop if you don't want to be pricing around. (I still do) You can be sure you are not getting ripped off if you buy anything there. Buy: I always, always buy my perfumes and cosmetics there. Anything that doesn't really go on sale in the civilian world you will make off like a bandit here. I also get shampoo, soap, drugs etc here. Pride gear! Anything really expensive like electronics you will save with not paying taxes. Alcohol prices are also decent. Don't buy: clothing, shoes, purses unless you have done your research ladies. The prices are good but not the best. If you have time you can almost always find better prices online. I have only bought one purse and one pair of shoes here. The parking is better than 32nd street but the exchange downtown is much bigger with a much bigger selection. read more

Maybe it was just the day I showed up, but this exchange had no air conditioning. I mean, it was HOT!!!! There was some in the entrance but as soon as you got through the automatic doors... Just heat. Past that, this is an enormous exchange, with cards, clothes, appliances and more. I would continue to shop here of I were in Miramar more often. read more

Honestly folks this place is nothing special. I've been to several different exchanges now (NEX, BX, MCX) and this is probably the plainest I've seen yet. It's mostly clothes, and not even that good of clothes. The section for "normal" goods like shampoo and such is very lacking. I went there today for a hair brush. I would say 80% of their brushes weren't in stock... in fact most of that aisle was empty or disorganized. I walked around a bit more and looked at a few things and some of the prices are rather outrageous... yeah I get the whole no tax thing but that's not a selling point when an item you're selling is twice the price of say Target for example. Also why are so many of your items not priced? Candles for example have NO sign or price tag; am I supposed to pick it up and hope for a price? I doubt I'll be back. It might be a farther drive but I'd rather go to Target/similar store or the NEX. read more

Yes, i have base access and yes, i come here often to go to the commissary, but rarely for the exchange. This is mainly because i don't think they are cheaper than other stores like Target and Walmart even with the no sales tax factored in. Plus their selection is rather poor. I came here several months ago when school started looking for something basic like a binder or folder and they didn't have it. In fact, there was only half an aisle for school supplies. This past week i came here to look for a baby shower gift. I chose this place because i didn't want to end up with the same gift as someone else. Again, their selection was rather lacking and not as cheap as i expected. I finally decided on something, but wasn't completely happy with it. I ended up going to Target and finding something better, so now i am going back to MCX to return my merchandise. The one area where you can really score with the no sales tax is the electronics department. Store is clean and i do love their home decoration selection. Customer service is okay. read more

Oo rah! After my family and I looked around the NEX in San Diego, we decided to see what the Marines had to offer. After all, the Marines claim to be the few and the proud, so chances are their shopping facilities on base would be great. Based on appearances, it did look promising. The interior of the store was really nice, and the selection of merchandise was quite large and impressive (they even carried Swatches!). However, as I had found out in my visit to NEX, this exchange also fell flat in terms of deals (aside from everything being from 10 to 20 percent off regular retail price). Yes, there are more sales here (I found some name-brand shoes at 75 percent off retail), but even then I had a hard time finding what I liked. Overall, if you are eligible to buy from a military exchange (or were lucky enough to have good military friends let you in), you might like this place if you like to buy from a large, impressive selection and you are not concerned with buying your stuff on sale. Otherwise, the prices are akin to what you find in any mall (save for the fact there's a small percentage off retail price and everything you buy at the exchange is tax-free). read more

This is a marine Excange however they do impress me. Now let's have it for them there getting a gun shop there that is the 1st I have ever heard of such but that just goes to show you the forward thinking of a marine but don't think that would happen for the Navy Excange there to much of wimps when it comes to that stuff. But can't Waite to see what it will look like now it is behind a bit but they have serval guys that are license to sell and work on them and sent them to school to do such. So if they spent that kind of money getting 5 guys there stuff to sale it that means it's coming. It would be stupid if that spent all that money and never did it and that would show how they wast money. However this is the marines and they don't so I have faith in them. The design and layout of this MCX reminds me of the old BX on Kadena AB (on Okinawa). It's a pretty big place but lacks the second floor that the NEX on 32nd has. Parking here is better, but only because fewer people shop at this MCX, at least during the times when I go here. Like every other NEX/MCX/BX/PX/Exchange (whatever you want to call it) I've been to, it's tax free and carries a lot of the same overpriced selection of clothing, shoes, and perfume/cologne. Thus, I only go here for three reasons: 1) Pride gear. Limited, but still carries some nice stuff. 2) The sales. I miss the 75% off deals from Camp Foster, so I stop by from time to time to see if there's anything worth buying. 3) I'm stuck on base and don't have a ride to the city. There's a mini-uniform shop/section in one corner of the MCX; this includes ribbons, accompanying devices, badges, collar devices, etc. Perfect location for those who live in the housing next to the MCX. read more

Good training is key and act as a solid liaison for retaining customers. Active duty deserves compliance and there families too when it comes to providing good and efficient customer service :-? Well, the assistance at the store is lacking, to say the least. It's always too far out and never if one could imagine in-between. Every now and then, an awesome experience with someone who works there will pop up! That's always great and welcoming. Why 3*** Stars?? Well, the store itself is always clean, spacious, orderly, and well lit. And the tax savings on the already lower pricing, is actually highlighting :) Just go, the savings are worth it! read more

Worst customer service ever. Hubby bought me a watch for Christmas and it didn't fit and I tried to get a new wristband order and there was no help. I went back with the receipt to return the watch and I was told I couldn't return the watch because i wore it. I had to put on the watch to make sure it fit. This place is pretty sick! It's come a long way since I first started shopping here in 2003. If you have access to the MCX, you will already know how much money you will or have already saved shopping here compared to mall prices! I love how they have relevant brands now and not last year's styles and products. The best thing too is that it is getting better and I know it will continue to get better. there have been times when some sections of this store are not stocked. I spoke with some of the staff there to try and locate an item they used to have in stock--my dog's food. They were unable to tell if there was a shipment coming or not and told me to fill out a customer service card by the entrance /exit and that i would be contacted.
