Visited April 2012 while on vacation in Chicago. Found through Yelp reviews. Delicious Thai food in a quiet, clean and oddly interesting setting. We enjoyed pot stickers, chicken & vegetables, and almond pad thai. The mural in progress on the wall features lots of cow, pig and dog caricatures depicting scenes in the U.S., while other areas feature traditional Southeast Asian kitch. When I posted my first review, I was craving crab rangoon and it was in fact great. However, I've since returned, hopeful for good Thai, and frankly, it just isn't. The Kee Mao is literally the blandest Kee Mao I've ever had -- they make it LOOK appetizing by throwing in various colored veggies, but the look is all it's got. Further, I ordered it with beef, which was overcooked, dry, and tasteless. Another staple that's hard to mess up? Shumai. Rather than pair it with a tasty house sauce like every other Thai restaurant in Chicago, they plate it with a corn-starchy, thick, artificially sweetened sauce that really tasted like I could have bought it at Jewel and been less disappointed. read more

I've been happy every time I've eaten here. Wether delivery, take-out or eat-in, the food is always delightful. I love the sweetness of the macaroni dish, the crisp flavors of their pad thai (with almonds), and the heat of the cracked chicken salad. Their veggies are always cooked perfectly and prepared in interesting ways. Nothing gets boring here. Their appetizers are great too. The crispy "wing wing" and salty quail eggs are fun. They also carry a large stock of asian snack foods, which has been fun to explore. I've tried many, but my favorite has to be the dried squid. So hot! I have not ate inside this establishment but I have ordered delivery via Grubhub. The delivery was fast and the food came hot. We ordered Panang Curry with extra beef. The container had a hole in it and it leaked through the bag. The rest of the food was soaked. The panang sauce was extremely watery. I prefer a thicker sauce so this was not that great. the flavors were OK, definitely not the best I've had. I ordered extra beef as well and the beef was thin and dry. Also ordered the almond pad thai with extra shrimp and chicken. There were probably about 3 pieces of chicken in the dish and 2 shrimp. The sauce was just sugar, no flavor whatsoever. The wing wings were OK, tiny compared to the pictures I've seen. The crab rangoon was good. Overall, it was ok but definitely not nearly as good as other places in the neighborhood. My favorite late night Thai restaurant in Chicago so far! 5 stars for the food from a Thai person! Here's how it works: You need to get the special congee menu - that's where the gems are at. They focus on the street-style food, similar to what you can get easily in Bangkok. You order the side dishes (which are priced variably between $5-$15) and have them with a bowl of porridge. If you order 5 or more side dishes, you get one free large bowl of congee (roughly 2-3 servings). I've been there several times and my recommendations include: 1. Spicy larb pork belly: I always order this, easily my favorite dish here. 2. Yum kai kem (Spicy salted-egg salad): very authentic and tasty; the saltiness from the egg blends very well with the spicy/sour sauce. 3. Chai-pow-pad-khai (Eggs cooked with preserved vegetables): also another of my favorite; would recommend if you like your congee side sweet, sour, and crunchy. 4. Kai-jiew-pu (Crab omelette): their omelette is so fluffy! 5. Pad-see-ew: Not as good as the other dishes imo. The noodles are a bit too hard. 6. Pad-hoi-laai (Spicy clam): a little spicy and salty. also highly recommended. 7. Kana-moo-grob (Crispy pork and Gai Lan with oyster sauce): this dish goes really well with the congee. 8. Fast and tasty!! We sometimes have delivery and sometimes pick up and it is ALWAYS super fast! I rate this place a 5 because of their Almond Pad Thai. I get the Pad Thai tofu and add extra veggies. For the price, I'd say this is the best Thai restaurant I've eaten at in years! Their food is artfully presented and most of their dishes are excellent. Most importantly, unlike other Thai restaurants I've been to, their food is very fresh and they are open until 2a.m. (well 1:30 really, they won't serve you after that time) On top of everything else you can order brown rice! I've had the crab fried rice with brown rice and it was to die for! The brown rice ensured that the rice was not too soft and gooey. Me dee also has a late night Congee menu, which I haven't tried, but the dishes I've seen others order with the Congee looked really delicious. Some of my favorite dishes are the Basil Chicken, the curries, and the aforementioned Crab fried rice. The Tom Kha soup is the best I've had anywhere, not too sour, not too sweet, not too thick. If you've read my other review, you know I'm all about the new Thai Restaurant in the Neighborhood. I try and take my mother's advice to only say nice things.... with Me Dee Cafe, there are only GREAT THINGS TO SAY!!! First off, HALLELUJAH for Thai restaurant that is open past 9 pm!!! Me Dee is open till 11 on weeknights and midnight on the weekends. Next, the place is soooo damn cute, it's worth stopping in just to take a look around! It's bright and clean and the cartoon characters on the wall are just fun and whimsical. Their cow logo is adorable also. They have a small selection of authentic Thai snack, many only labeled in Thai. I bought home some Thai cereal crackers. But most important is the food. They have a fairly small menu with most of the usual suspects but with a few twists. For example, I had the Almond Pad Thai on this visit which was delicious. Their Almond Pad Thai ($7 - cheap) was kind of saucy, but not the bland ketchupy pad Thai many storefront restaurants serve. (I've complained about ketchup pad Thai in other reviews, I won't do so here.) I don't know that I've had a similar taste at any other Thai restaurant. My guess is they make their Pad Thai sauce from scratch in their own kitchen. It had a bold, flavor I couldn't pick out. Maybe they simmered the tamarind a little longer and slower (I'm just guessing here). It was delicious. What also impressed me about the Almond Pad Thai was the noodles... perfectly cooked, slightly Al Dante, not mushy. I ordered the Pad Thai with tofu as my protein. Usually you get deep fried tofu. Me Dee's uses pan-fried or wok-fried tofu in the dish which makes it healthier and better tasting! Oh, and the sliced almonds instead of peanuts gave their Pad Thai an elegant, crisp and refreshing taste.... a nice simple twist on an old favorite! Their dessert freezer was filled with beautiful hand make cheese cakes, ice creams and imported mochi. Who know they had ice cream in Thailand??? But their assortment of flavors (from Thai coffee, to banana-coconut) will impress you. The mini cheesecakes looked delicious. There were a dozen or so other dessert items on their menu also. I didn't try any, but the pictures they had on display looked scrumptious. In a nutshell, I can't wait to got back!
