Stopped in here on a chilly summers evening. Was happily surprised by the quality of food. Now this isn't the most appealing place as far as ambience. It's a little thai shop with seating for 18-20. But the food was great! We enjoyed the Tom yum soup with shrimp it was the best I think I've ever had. We also enjoyed the lump crab meat fried rice as well as the panang curry with fried noodles and chicken. Everything was lovely. For dessert we had the mango and strawberry mochi and the thai custard. The thai custard although a lovely shareable portion was not my favorite. It was a little heavy. I love Mee Dee. Food is delicious and consistent and delivery is always fast. I have moved apartments twice since discovering his place, and "within the delivery area of Mee Dee" is a very high requirement on the list. Yes. First off, this is Ravenswood? I like it. I like it a lot. Ravenswood is one of those amorphous neighborhoods that I can never really define. But, if this is it, I'm moving in. The restaurant is tiny. Don't come here with a football team and look to get served. Come here with a friend. One. There are about eight tables and the dining room can't fit a ton of folks. This is a good thing. It means individualized attention and great food served fresh and to order. I gotta start off with Thai iced tea. There's is beautifully orange and deliciously made. A lesser man would settle for this as dessert. I am not that man. But, more on that later. I have yet to eat something I was not seriously impressed with. For apps, get the Chive Dumpling AND the lemon scallop. I said, "AND." Listen to me if you want to grub. The dumpling is fried and served with a sweet soy sauce. It's substantial as an app, but light enough to not ruin your meal. It's a warm-up. The lemon scallop is closer to the main event. Four nicely-sized scallops served individually and in a lemony sauce. Stupid good. Now, that your stomach is stretching, check out the entrees. Either get the macaroni (stir-fried in red sauce with onions and egg) or the kee mao noodles. If you go for the kee mao, go for the udon noodle. The spaghetti noodles soak up the sweet basil nicely, but they can get a little stringy. The udon compliment the dish much better. You're hydrated, appetized and entreed. You're not done. You need dessert. No, you're not full. Dessert. Now. You want the banana coconut ice cream. Topped with whipped cream and served at the perfect temp/texture, this dessert will make you forget about all the troubles in your life. Seriously. Each time I eat this, I completely tune out and concentrate solely on the creamy miracle before me. Heavenly. The service is nothing but sweet. The young lady who works the front of the house is nice, patient, funny, and shocked/impressed/quietly stunned by my eating ability. It's a gift. And, the place is littered with images of cows with orthodontic needs. Yes, there are buck-tooth bovines all over the wall, but most have braces, so they are trying to better themselves. Yeah, it's cute, and yeah, the prices are right, and yeah, they are open late, but...well, most of the food is sort of bland. The pad thai is served with almonds instead of peanuts, which was regrettable for me but not the main problem. The dish just didn't have any soul to it, although I have to say that the individual components all seemed quality and were mixed in the right proportions. My other go-to Thai dish, the basil fried rice, suffers a similar fate. How about a cucumber salad...same as every other middle-of-the-road cucumber salad out there. Upon dining in, we got a free four-piece shrimp shumai with a coupon...same as every other mushy, boring shrimp shumai out there. I usually judge a Thai place on a handful of favorite dishes; the irony here is that all of my standbys were mediocre but I really liked a few other things. (So maybe I need to start branching out.) I sampled a few bites of the Me Dee vegetables dish, which I found surprisingly flavorful and satisfying. The crispy tofu salad is tangy and pleasantly filling. And best of all was the dish that they call simply "Cashew nut," which contains those delightful legumes but so much more--carrrots, onions, bell peppers, celery, and water chestnuts, all in a light brown sauce and served with white rice which makes a gargantuan meal (or two normal-sized ones). Your beauty and specialty is in CONGEE--- served late night just like in BKK -xoxo If you come here, please come after 8pm to order from the congee menu (its like their secret menu)- that's when it starts. It's their specialty and what sets them apart from all the other Thai joints. BYOB as well so bring a couple bottles of Chang or Singha beer! Congee- (rice soup) Thai congee is not as thick as Chinese style and you order dishes to eat with it. I usually come to this restaurant in a party of 4 and we order about 5 dishes plus a large congee bowl. I usually get the salted duck eggs, spicy bok-choy, ground chicken, carmelized fish, fermented cabbage and one other meat based dish. FYI, congee meal is usually eaten family style and pretty healthy. Check out the snacks when you are there. When I wait for the food I grab a bag of Thai lays potato chip in Nori Seaweed flavour--amazaballs.. Desserts are delicious- Thai Rice patty cake, Roti, Tokyo patti cakes are my choice. I'm sort of at a loss for words sitting here. Ahh, got one: cows. Yes, cows. Cartoon cows, to be exact. They are plastered on the one very large visible wall of this uber tiny place. The best part? The walls change over time. Yep. I looked at some pics of Me Dee Cafe on Yelp, then compared em to my memory. Yep, totally different. In light of the winter season, the cows were dressed up as penguins and reindeer. It's so simple. Cows. Anywho, Me Dee Cafe is one of those late night places. You know, you get outta work super late and try to use the Yelp app on your iPhone/Android device to see what's "nearby" and "open now." Then you look through the list of restaurants and check out the ratings and amount of dollar signs until you find gold. The food showed me to not judge a book by it's cover, for real. I wasn't expecting much from a small place like this, but boy did they deliver [and yes, they DO deliver, literally!]. I was eating with a couple vegetarians who wanted to just order a bunch of stuff and share. We started off with the chive dumplings, which came with a nice little sauce. It was lightly fried and definitely delicious. For entrees, we got pad see ewe, basil fried rice, and the panang curry, all of which we ordered with tofu. The pad see ewe was a little sweeter [like taste-wise] than most other Thai spots I've had it. The basil fried rice had plenty of basil, just the way I likey, and the panang curry was also pretty sweet [again, taste-wise]. Portions are not enormous, but large enough to share. I'd probably suggest ordering in a similar fashion so you can taste a little bit of everything. Plating was something to see, too. They've got all types of shaped plates and bowls to serve the food. Outside of Thailand, this is one of the best Thai places I've found in Chicago. I enjoy coming here. It's never packed and the food is delicious. We've been twice and both times the food was excellent. The Food: Panang curry- perfectly spiced. It's spicy enough to where you don't lose your taste buds, and I love that they add extra veggies. Most places only give you strange vegetables that shouldn't be in a curry (like tomato and cucumber) or they skimp on them completely, but not this restaurant. There is actually something in the curry. Green curry was equally good and filled with lots of other ingredients. Trio Mushroom Salad- Wow! I loved this salad. I could taste the all the flavors of Thai food in this one dish. It had the fish sauce flavor that was subtle, not overdone. It was sour, it was sweet, it was lots of bursts of flavors and amazing mushrooms all on one plate. I would order this again. For a salad, this was exciting! Wing Wing chicken- So crispy and filled with flavor. It reminded me of the fried chicken lady I'd always go to when I was in Thailand. Lava calamari- equally delicious and comes out fresh and hot. It's all made to order, and one of my favorite appetizers. Chive dumplings- not what I expected. I was not excited to get those, but I was letting others order, and I was so surprised and how they came out. I kept going back for more. I think we actually fought over those. Chicken eggrolls- were fresh. Chicken always has a tendency to dry out, especially in eggrolls. I did find that to be true in this dish, but still a good purchase. Steamed Mussels- Not a fan of the mussels. They were chewy and a bit fishy. They were kind of old. But the sauce they were in was to die for! I could actually order some rice, take out those awful mussels, and dip my rice in that sauce and BOOM! I've got a brand new dish of yum yum good! I am a big fan of this restaurant. Our favorite Thai restaurant in Chicago. There are so many bad westernized ones here, it's embarrassing. Me Dee is a true gem and has great late night hours to boot. We come here way too often for late night congee. It's got soul and authenticity - and it reminds me of late nights in Bangkok in some random hole in the wall with no A/C on the side of the street. It's BYOB, bring a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black to complete the experience. Pro-tip: bypass the regular menu and ask for the congee one. It's translated in English. This was a new place to me, so I tried some new things! The Kee Mao with udon noodles was excellent! My hubby liked the combo friend rice. He is an officianado of fried rice and said it was on par with other restaurants (Opart & Oscar). He also had the Tom Yum which he said was better than most. We tried the chive dumplings on the recommendation of other yelpers, but found them kind of pasty and mediocre. The sauce it comes with is delicious, though, and I'd put it on anything. We ordered the fried banana & sweet potato and thai custard for dessert. The banana/sweet potato mix was basically just deep fried slices of banana & sweet potato, but they were fairly bland. It was good dipped in the sauce from the chive dumplings, though! The thai custard was a little soggy, but very tasty. We had ordered online & got the order in 30 instead of the hours quoted, which is outstanding! read more

Go with a group. More friends = variety! 2. Ask for the special menu if they don't give it to you. This menu offers congee (similar to porridge). Congee is comfort food to many Asian households. It is rice, but more of the wet soupy side. 3. If you order 5 dishes, you get a large congee for free! Although the decor is a bit odd, the food is on point. I love the vibrant color each dish brings to the table. During our late night outing, of the numerous dishes we ordered, I would recommend: - Mushroom Trio - (Vegetarian) if you are a mushroom lover like me than you don't have to think twice. Light and goes well with the congee. - Bean Sprout w/ Fish Tofu - This flavorful dish packs a punch but nothing to sweat about. One of my favorite dish of the night! - Crispy Pork Belly Stir Fry - I am big on texture, so this dish nailed it for me. A little on the fatty side, but pure goodness. Crispy and crunch pork belly stir fry with bell peppers, jalapenos, and onions to give it color. Drizzle the saucy over your congee and pig out. Overall, unique concept that I have not seen in Chicago before that offers comfort Thai food. Love that the prices are decent for pretty good portions to share with a group. I've been going here for last five years, have made countless recommendations to bring in new customers, and physically brought in many friends, but today I had to walk out. The positive past history is why I gave 2 instead of 1 star. I only come for the congee menu as it reminds me of my mom's home cooking, and their regular menu is sub par to nearby Opart Thai. Regular menu is a bit too sweet and bland. Desserts we're good when they first opened, but selection has slimed over years due to lack of demand I imagine. The service is normally slow which I can forgive for good food. But today the service was plain rude, and the food is not that good to be worth putting up with that. We were the only table, when I was trying to give her my order, she interrupted me and demanded I give her numbers. I lost track of my order because of her interruption, and she decided that she couldn't give me a minute to recall and walked away mid order to take a walk-in to-go order, who was just ordering soup and whose friends meet up with her there and brought outside food. Instead of returning to take order, she went into kitchen, stepped out for a second to look at door, never even acknowledging our table. While we sat there wondering when in the world can we actually finish putting in the rest of order, so after 10 mins of waiting, we walked out. As a side note, both me and my boyfriend work in kitchens, we understand how understaffed and busy small family businesses are, and we we're extremely patient, but the rudeness and being ignored went beyond what any paying customer should deal with, especially regular customers. There are so many good restaurants in this area, especially Thai and other Asian cuisine, invest your money in places that actually care about their customers in addition to the food. read more

This is my favorite Thai food in Ravenswood. There are a bunch on Damen in that few blocks, but they are average tasting and pricier than necessary. I moved to the area over the summer and was pleased to find this place. I usually order carry out (especially after long plane rides) and have also eaten there. They are always speedy with carry out, and service is excellent. Came here for dinner, and got the glass noodles, the Chinese sausage salad, beef pad see ewe, and congee. Seems like a lot for two people, but the portion sizes come small compared to other Thai restaurants in my opinion (see my photos and judge for yourself). The glass noodles were delicious and full of flavor. It was spicy and very "lime-y". I would suggest getting this with congee, the rice porridge. The plain congee taste balances out the strong flavors from the noodles well. Plus, a bowl of congee is only $1.50. The sausage salad and beef pad see ewe were not a disappointment, just that the portion was smaller than I thought. Despite this, the food is very delicious, and the place feels very comfortable. The food here is quite good, reasonably priced and - MY FAVORITE FEATURE!- they are open LATE, like 1 AM. This works out very well for me, I eat here once a week for a late night dinner with a colleague where we go over the weeks business while we chow down. It's not a huge menu but everything I've tried on it is quite good, very fresh. I'm a fan of the Tom Kha Gai. Also the "chicken cracker salad" is very tasty, seems like a form of Larb Gai served in a slightly different way. Very nice. The staff here are super great, too. The place is very small and intimate, keep that in mind. I see quite a few Thai people eating here, which I take to mean it's authentic Thai cuisine. Some of the dishes are mild and some can be ordered quite spicy- and if you wish they will make it REALLY hot and spicy. (YES! THE BEST!) At the same time, tell them "mild" of you prefer. read more

This is my local Thai spot and it's consistently delicious and cheap! I love places that charge fair prices and don't inflate their prices. Most dishes are under $10! The portions are in the smaller side but you are definitely full when you're done if you get an appetizer and an entree. read more

I DIE. Hello to the cutest Thai place on earth and currently #1 on my list of late-night meals. If any place deserves my repeated swoons, it is Me Dee Cafe and here is why: 1) They are open until 2am ALL week. (North side too, so bonus points for being closer to me). 2) It is adorable. Whoever owns this place has a love for cute cartoon cows and I totally agree with them. They're everywhere! On the website, on the menu, on the wall, and even on the pen that I signed my CC receipt with. 3) Hands down the best tom yum soup I have had in Chicago. None of that sickeningly sweet stuff. This is hot and sour at its best. Delightful. 4) Everything else we ate was fantastic. Chicken pot stickers, pan-fried chive dumpling, macaroni with chicken, red curry noodle with chicken... tasty tasty tasty! We've already made plans to come back and order other things. NOMS! 5) Dessert alone is worth a trip here. They have a little cooler with lots of desserts on display. I counted around 9 different types of mochi. They had all these different ice cream flavors too that looked fabulous: lemongrass/green tea, Thai iced coffee, Thai iced tea, some fruity concoction. In this magical cooler they also had Asian ice creams that are pretty much impossible to find. Sweet corn ice cream sandwich?! I eat so many of those when I spend summers in Beijing but have never seen it in Chicago until tonight... We ordered the roti with nutella and roti with condensed milk. That's right, buttery flat bread paired with the two best sweet substances on the planet. 6) The service was terrific. There was a really sweet Thai girl working who cleared our dishes and filled our waters and was so attentive. 7) They have coupons online. We got a free order of pot stickers tonight. Score! 8) For food this good, at this time of night, served on such geometrically interesting plates, your bill will be quite reasonable. Soup + appetizer + 2 entrees + 2 desserts + 1 drink = $40. 9) Should you find yourself hungry later, peruse the snack shelves. I picked up a bunch of sea creature snacks (I was most amused by this baked cuttlefish snack called "Squidy"). JN got some lemon butter Collon biscuits. They also have Pocky, larb-flavored Pretz, lots of candy, and durian toffee (I was not allowed to purchase this for the house). 10) I decided to write this up at my #200 instead of Calumet Fisheries. Clearly, Me Dee Cafe is doing something right because they win right now over giant smoked shrimp and fried oysters. Instant fan and forever will be. Ok, so I went here a couple days after it opened and was not at all impressed. I figured that, with all other Thai options, it was no big deal. Last week, fellow Yelpers (Yanyao N and Joshua N) wrote glowing reviews of Me dee, so I thought I'd give it another shot. The place is adorable and it's in my neighborhood. So my husband and I decided to go. We ate (just got home) and are stuffed. Our bill was only $32. Ok, so the food...we shared crab and cheese (crab rangoon). It was super flaky and creamy and tasted of crab. Some places you can't even taste any crab. So this was a winner. I had the tom yum soup...but gave the shrimp to my husband. He loved the shrimp (I don't like the texture of shrimp). The broth of the soup was amazing - lots of lemon grass and a good amount of heat. I had the Pad See Eiw with chicken...perfect amount of sweet! The broccoli was cooked perfectly...still a little crunchy. My husband was in the mood for crab, so he got the crab fried rice. He was very pleased with it. And there was a lot of crab in the dish. Bonus - this place is open til 2AM, so now we can go here late night (read: after coming home from a bar) instead of getting burritos. I like choices. I'm so glad I gave Me dee another shot.
