Second time we've been here. Judging by the leftovers on the table, the pancakes are really big. We had lunch. My wife had the salmon burger, which was very good. Our friend had a cheeseburger, which I can't speak for. Our other friend and I had the Reuben sandwich. Delicious! This is a big sandwich. They toasted the marble swirl bread, piled it with corned beef and sauerkraut. The cheese was a little funny. Tasted more like Cheez Whiz, than Swiss. Top it all with a Thousand Island-type dressing. Added on the onion rings, instead of chips. Those were good, too. Yes, it is cash only, and you go inside to pay. We sat on the pleasant patio. read more

Do not be fooled by the charming exterior of this cafe as there was nothing charming about my experience of trying to dine here. This is my first ever Yelp review and it is motivated by the extremely unpleasant experience my family of four had here after a wonderful hike up to Ouzel Falls. I am unable to rate the service because we had none! The waitress did not acknowledge us, did not offer us water or coffee when we sat down and only did so when we asked, did not take our order until after we waited an hour; and served another customer, who came 10-15 minutes after we arrived, his order before us. It was only after he finished his meal and we were still waiting for ours, 1.5 hours after we arrived, that my husband, very politely asked about the status of our order. The waitress' response was actually hostile! My husband has worked in food service and was so insulted by her response, that he left and waited in the car. Listen, I am all about giving the food industry workers slack and the benefit of the doubt. But, honestly, we felt like we were on a time-out and being punished, which is something I never, ever experienced before in a restaurant. read more

I'll start with the positives: the coffee was excellent and the biscuits with sausage gravy were pretty good. On to the negatives: the biscuits and gravy were almost $13. We split that along with the ham and cheese scramble for ~$10. I've never been so surprised at the cost in such a small and off-the-beaten-path place. We were sat immediately and promptly ignored for 10 minutes. Our table was right next to the door that both servers were using... We finally order our drinks, coffee and water, and they are brewing the coffee. Later when I asked for a refill, they were still brewing coffee. Our food arrived and sat in front of us for 2-3 minutes while we waited on silverware. The absolute worst part of our experience was the slamming screen door with bells on it. BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM. This place is phenomenal! If you haven't had breakfast here, you are missing out. Period. I would highly recommend ordering the huevos rancheros. Yum! Our family stopped by on more than one occasion and were impressed with each visit. Besides the huevos rancheros, we also ordered traditional breakfast entrees that were palate pleasing. Our kids ordered pancakes and were very pleased. The pancakes are gigantic! This is a quaint little restaurant that sits off the beaten path a bit. But not so far off the path that you can't go. We were visiting the area in the summer and were able to eat outside on the front porch. It was an enjoyable experience watching the hummingbirds visit the hanging baskets while sipping on some delicious coffee. I felt like I was visiting a relative's house for breakfast instead of a restaurant. It was great. Check this place out. You won't regret it. Once you've been to the Meadow Mountain Cafe, you'll realize what you've been missing. I would never in a million years have known about this place and now that I've been, it's imprinted itself in my brain as the epitome of the small log cabin cafe hidden in the mountains that I dream about having a great breakfast at. My father recently retired to Estes Park. Not long after, he discovered this gem of a restaurant. Now it's an annual tradition to go have breakfast there when my sister and I visit. Each year it's a highlight. Hidden up in the Rocky Mountains in Allenspark, CO (about 15-20 minutes from Estes Park), The Meadow Mountain Cafe is a tiny log cabin built on the side of a mountain. (The gorgeous DRIVE alone to GET there is worth going!) The restaurant is small and consists only of a small dining room. (There's outdoor seating and so i would wager the summer months see a bigger and busier operation.) I'd say the place seats maybe twenty people, thirty max. The cabin is heated by an old iron wood burning stove in the corner. We sat at the table closest to it this year and we all began to disrobe to adjust to the amount of heat it put off. From the kitchen, you can hear the owner/cook rocking out to an oldies radio station while she whips up comfort food's greatest hits. The crowd looks like mostly locals. I mean, if I were a tourist visiting Colorado, I don't think I would have any idea of even HOW to look for a place like this, let alone, find it. As soon as you sit down, the waitress comes over and makes sure everyone gets a cup of Joe to get the morning started. (Everyone gets a different mug the restaurant either picked up at a flea market or are souvenir's from past adventures.) Then you get to the business at hand; stuffing your face with Rocky Mountain Comfort Food. Each year I get the biscuits and gravy. It's an enormous plate with two home made biscuits split in half and then slathered with the thickest, meatiest, craziest gravy I've ever experienced. The bacon on the side are thick slabs of meat two inches wide and a quarter inch thick. My sister gets the huevos rancheros, which always look equally amazing. Other favorites include thick blueberry pancakes bursting with fresh blueberries. Like I said, the menu is full of great looking options ranging from breakfasty stuff to burgers and sandwiches. Unfortunately, since I only visit Colorado once a year or so, I go for my standard. Maybe next year I'll switch it up. In the meantime, I'll periodically dream of that warm little cabin and the amazing food; especially while enduring a cold New York winter! So...if you find yourself visiting Rocky Mountain National Park or Estes Park... make some time to get up and eat at Meadow Mountain Cafe. read more

Small space but AWESOME food. Homemade bread is delicious. I wish I had asked if I could buy a loaf. Besides plenty of meat options, there is a vegetarian section which made me very happy. My family used to vacation in the Allenspark area every summer, and we'd schedule an obligatory breakfast at Meadow Mountain sometime within the visit. Sadly, we haven't been back in three years, but what I remember of Meadow Mountain, I love. We usually visited Allenspark in mid-July, so it was lovely to sit on the outside porch and have breakfast/brunch (if I remember correctly, that is...porch, yes? someone correct me if I'm wrong). However, we made our last visit within the first week of May (in 2005) and a clean foot-and-a-half of snow was being dumped on the mountains. We stumbled into Meadow Mountain the morning after we'd arrived and it was fantastic; their wood stove was roaring, the coffee was steaming, and we had a delicious warm-up. Favorite item on the menu: Shredded wheat toast. Apparently this is a fairly common food phenomenon within homemade bakers, but I'd never tasted it before visiting Meadow Mountain. Basic jist: Bread with crushed shredded wheat cereal baked in to the batter/dough, toasted moderately and slathered liberally with butter. Absolutely delicious. Other items enjoyed: Coffee, definitely. Meadow brews its coffee with a few dashes of cinnamon stirred into the grounds. Purists will disagree with this practice, but I am adventurous enough to "defile" the sacred beverage, and even more, to enjoy the result. Omelettes: Yes, yes, YES. Huge portions. Evenly cooked. Full of delicious savories but not greasy (a huge plus--think of all of the omelettes you get that drip with cheese runoff). As an eater who was much more stuck in her ways during those years in Colorado than now, I (regretfully) ordered the same omelette variety each time--classic Denver omelette. Definitely delicious, with green peppers, ham, onion, and cheddar. But I should have given myself more of a chance to try other options. My mother usually ordered another type of omelette, called the "Meadow Mountain" omelette if I am not mistaken (but I could be wrong), which was filled with provolone, avocado, tomato, mushroom, and sprouts. We once breakfasted with a friend at Meadow, and she ordered a blueberry pancake, which was huge and fluffy, blissfully and liberally speckled with blue-purple globes within the cake (no fake blueberry sugar pellets for this place). In short, I'd visit again at the slightest opportunity. I regret being away for so long, but I don't anticipate being disappointed at my next visit. read more

Absolutely adorable. This is a tiny, family run (I'm assuming) place that really hits the mark. We stopped here before a hiking trip one morning and it was fabulous! They were busy but still served up our food right away. The food was wholesome, healthy, and well proportioned for the price. The coffee was absolutely out of this world. I enjoyed the cozy feel of this little place--like I was having breakfast at Grandma's mountain cabin. We will definitely be back. We were told about this place by a friend or never would either known or stopped. We were glad we did as the breakfast for both my wife and me was very good. We both had the wheat pancakes and they were huge. Filled the entire plate. They came with a copious amount of butter. The server was did a great job and friendly. This is a very small place with room for 22 inside. The outside porch is good for another 8 to 12 people during the summer period. I recommend this place for the food. It's 15 miles from Estes Park so planning is necessary if you want to try it. read more

Had the meadow mountain omelette, it was so juicy and delicious and the home fries (potatoes) were cooked perfectly. Wish I didn't live so far away!!!! Great little place for breakfast and lunch. Last time I had excellent huevos rancheros. Today I had excellent green chile plus a good chicken pot pie with a fresh, flaky roll. My wife had an excellent walnut waffle augmented by real maple syrup. The good coffee has a touch of cinnamon for extra flavor. The party next to us thoroughly enjoyed their generously sized burgers and onion rings. The place is small and rustic in an old wooden structure. Very authentic, and totally opposite to touristy places common elsewhere. It can get crowded at peak hours but is worth it. My only complaint is wishing it were open longer hours for lunch and dinner. They do take credit cards. -- at least they took mine for a $30+ tab read more

I hit this nice little place with my family at about 11:30 so it was a mixed table of breakfast eaters and lunch eaters. I had Huevos Rancheros and it was tasty. I could have sworn it came with bread and potatoes but the waiter said no. Maybe I misread the menu. Anyhoo. My side order of homemade toast was excellent too. Everyone else enjoyed their food -lunchers and breakfasters alike. Warning-when I say this place is little I am not kidding. There are maybe 5 tables and the entry door hits one of them when you walk in. Lots of locals seem to frequent this restaurant and they are not shy about making it known they are waiting for a table. My wife and I went out of our way to eat breakfast here. It is certainly quaint. The place has a lot of character. It's small inside. They have a good menu to select from. My wife got the waffles and I got the traditional breakfast (eggs, sausage, home fries and wheat toast). The wheat toast is home made. It was really good. The meal had very good flavor and the prices are reasonable. Our waitress was really good as well. We arrived around 9 am and got a seat. It was a Monday morning and raining, so people may have decided to sleep in. I'm sure the weekends are busy. We would go back again. read more

My friend and I went last Sunday again. Our favorite place for breakfast. I had the usual for me, the 2 eggs with bacon and a side of two pancakes. Loved it. When I went to put syrup on though the whole top came off pouring all over my plate. Glad I like syrup. Got a fresh plate and moved the food so it was all good. Had plenty of good coffee. We arrived at 8:30, they open at 7:30, we got a table but it's lucky I think, any earlier and we probably would not have had a seat, any later, after "church", wouldn't have had a seat either and I don't like to wait tooling. The time before we had to wait an hour. The waitress is always nice but she's the only one waiting tables. It's a small place. Surely will go back again. read more

The guys running the place took over from their mother- who passed away recently, and from my perspective have done a fantastic job continuing. It's just a great little "hole-in-the-wall" with amazing food and a wood-burning stove in the corner. I was in mountain heaven! They'll probably serve your amazing food on mismatched tableware, and your coffee may be served in a 1980's Christmas mug, but you won't regret the food or experience here! Such a treat. Everytime i have the pleasure of going to Medow Mountain i am so excited and i know I'm about to eat some delicious food. I usually go after camping in a near by area. The wait can sometimes be long to get a table but its totally worth it. The coffee is a great start with a hint of cinnamon, i also love ordering a cinnamon roll first with the coffee. I love their pancakes they are so fluffy and cooked just right. When leaving Estes Park i tell my friends to take 7 so they can go by Medow Mountain and enjoy this Hidden gem. Bring Cash. read more

I spent several summers working at a camp nearby. We would go here frequently. This place is the absolute cutest, and the people working there care so much about the customers. the info online said MMC opened at 7:30am on friday.....we wanted to be first in line to get in and out to be at the RMNP gate at 9am, a 5 min drive away....arrived and saw MMC didn't open until 8am....shucks, figured that would be ok since we were first in line.....talked to some women who came early and they said that on friday a local group of people showed up for breakfast at 8am....that was a red flag...sure enough, at 8am the cars pulled in....6 locals came to wait with the rest of us...door opened at 8:05....my hubby and i were the first ones inside and sitting at a table...only 4 tables....everyone else came in and sat down....even though the 6 locals were the last to be seated they were the first to get menus and the first to have their order taken by the one waitress....unbelievable!!....obviously this is how it's done at the MMC and from what i saw, the 6 locals expected they would be given the first to arrive customer service regardless of the other 3 tables of 2 people each.... we had no choice but to sit it out and watch the 6 locals get all their food and sides before we got ours....the food was just ok....the pancakes tasted like cardboard...the table next to us finally got their toast but had already finished their breakfast and asked for the check...needless to say we missed our arrival time to the park.....don't waste your time stopping here....it's over hyped and not a gem! read more

Home made breads, desserts, original recipes, friendly, respectful, understanding staff, (whom I once had the pleasure of serving as a group at a different restaurant I was waiting tables at) good coffee, super homey feel to it. The food is good.They sometimes have homemade potato chips, which are good. The cost is now comparable to nearby cities: Boulder, Longmont, and Estes Park. The days and hours of operation are not reliable. Back in October 2017, we went to have lunch at 1:30pm, (they're open until 2pm) and was told that they closed early because people weren't coming in (even though they were). We went back May 14, 2018 at 1pm (still open until 2pm), and they said they closed early because Mondays are still slow. When we left, we saw other folks coming to eat here and gave them the bad news. read more
