I saw others with the meatball sandwich and I think I try that next time! Like a lot of people, I wanted to check for myself what the hype was all about. First of all, I will always give kudos to places that dares to be different in the world of large chain restaurants. The concept is simple, the prices are reasonable, service is quick, actually quite perfect for the lunch crowd. The food is good, and since it is a very small menu, which I do not mind at all. It is fresh, and if you add sides to your sandwiches, it hits the spot. Did it blow me away? No. If I work within walking distance, I would go back again. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives brought me here. From all the restaurants Guy Fieri visited in Vancouver, this was at the very top of my list. Located in a sketchy area of town, Meat & Bread was not hard to find. Street parking may pose an issue. Luckily for me, it didn't as someone left right when I got there. The storefront was a bit blah. Interior was simple and clean. Only four items were on the menu. Guy recommended getting the porchetta so we got that along with the meatball sandwich. Both were in the $8-9 range. Verdict: They hit a home run with the porchetta. Good lord, it was delicious. My second favorite sandwich ever, next to the mouth-watering cuban sandwiches at Paseo in Seattle. It consisted of succulent chunks of pork with itty bitty pieces of chicharron sandwiched between two ciabatta breads and drizzled with salsa verde. After the first bite, my eyes widened with delight. It was a perfect combination of tang, fresh herbs and crunch. The crispy pork skins elevated the sandwich to a whole new level. The meatball sammie was forgettable. In fact, it was awful. I threw half of the sandwich in the garbage. All in all, Meat & Bread gets a huge thumbs up. The porchetta sandwich is as good as it gets. It's really hard to go wrong here--any sandwich option will be the best sandwich you've ever had, every time you have it. Sort of a limited menu, so I usually go for the daily special. As the name might say, do not bring your veggie friends here (sorry!) and if you're a Monday-Friday, 9-5'er like me, unless you work downtown, you WILL have to plan your Saturday around coming here for lunch. The Place: Less than a 10 minute walk from both the Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations, my buddies and I went for lunch at their location at Cambie Street close to the heart of Gastown. It's pretty surprising how quickly the lunch buildup at this place gets - at around 11:30am all seems well and quiet, but skip ahead 15 minutes and the line is already out the door. Don't let the lineup intimidate you though, they get orders out fairly quickly and their almost assembly line-like system makes me an instant fan. For seating, it's probably not the best place for groups, especially in the middle of the lunch rush, what with their communal seating style and all. This makes for lively conversation though and if you're social enough, you might make a quick friend. The Food: Meat eaters, you'll definitely want to try their Porchetta - pork loin, crackling and their Salsa Verde between a freshly baked Caibatta bun, served with a side of mustard on a wooden cheese tray (very nice touch). The meat was very well cooked and seasoned and the sandwich wasn't as greasy as I was expecting, so I was pleasantly surprised. Their special menu also seems to change on a daily basis so definitely try it if you have the chance. They also have an assortment of unique drinks that I'll definitely look into the next time I visit. This place is awesome!!!! My boyfriend and popped in the other day for a quick bite and the Porchetta sandwich was delicious! The pork is tender and incredibly well seasoned and the crunchy cracklings pieces add a great texture, the salsa verde was a great addition and the bread was crunchy on the outside but nice and soft on the inside. We shared the Porchetta and also the Meatball sandwich too, I don't think that this was as good as the pork but it was still well seasoned, a little spicy for my liking but when I happened to mention that in passing to the server when I was ordering another Porchetta because I couldn't eat the meatball the server gave me the second Porchetta on the house! Whilst we were there the management were preparing for their 5th anniversary that was happening the next day. They were going to have $5 sandwiches and roast a hog out the front! Street parking is available as well as surround parkades if you are driving into the city for this experience. Seating can be a challenge during peak rush hour as this is obviously the go to location for many of the surrounding residents and businesses. It is cafeteria style where you go up the counter and make your selections along the line (soups, salads, chili). You can chose to dine in or dine out. Their beverages are quite cool. The pork is cooked like a Chinese roast pig with a crispy skin - the difference is that the pork has seasoning wrapped into it so it is flavourful throughout. The meatball was a bit spicy (which I didn't mind) but I could see how it might be problematic if a young kid who is expecting flavors less spicy. The marinara sauce was rich and tasty as well. We also had their soup (corn chowder) of the day which was tasty but too watery for me. Overall--Very outstanding. The food was tasty. Service spot on...from host, those at the "carving" (chopping) stations, bus staff, and cashier. Excellent sandwiches at good prices. My two complaints? (1) the type of music they play, which grates on my nerves; and (2) the volume of the music. I would patronize Meat and Bread dozens of times a year more if they had either no music or some kind of neutral music. Why do the owners of the restaurant go to so much trouble to cater so excellently to my sense of taste and then smack me in the sense of hearing with the horrible music? What's the point? Sure, you are going to get the early 20s and the late 50s hippie demographic but for a good chunk of the population (people like me) I simply won't pay to have my nerves rattled. You will drive people away with non-neutral music but you won't lose any people by playing neutral, bland music. read more

Some serious porchetta happening here! The flavors are delicious and the bread is very crunchy too. For their porchetta sandwich: They could add some more of that crispy skin so the textures and crunch really come through. It's a littttle dry without the sauce so they should add two tablespoons of the sauce instead of one in my opinion. The sandwich itself might not look too big, but it IS filling! For the Kimchi pulled pork one (I think that's what it was): My dad got it but I took a few bites. That was really really flavorful and much more saucy. The vegetables/onions in it gave it that succulent crunch. Overall it's a decent sandwich and pretty good value (you WILL feel full at the end). read more
