Such a fun, cute little bar. The burgers are served from a food truck outside. Perfect for a nice weather lunch or dinner or late night meal. The burger and fries were delicious! To describe this in relation to any other place is hard since it's so unique. We popped in on a Friday night with a group of 6, so it was a little hard to find a spot. A small table opened up, so we all squeezed in and had a blast. You can order food from the Disco Burger outside from your phone or walk up to the truck as well. I was super surprised how much I liked the burger. I could compare it to a less greasy version of town topic. Delicious. Our waitress was awesome and we were all matching drinks, so we got some high life, mystery tall boys, and she loved it. The stone walls and disco ball combo was awesome and I hope to be back in to check out some cocktails as well. read more

I visited Varsity Club to hang out with a friend on her birthday and enjoy Disco Burger. To that end it should be noted that this review is just for the patio as I didn't have a reason to venture inside! All of that being stated, despite the heat, the Varsity Club patio is awesome. There are plenty of picnic tables, it's kid friendly (at least during dinner), and they have some great happy hour specials. I loved that even outside you get table service, the staff was SO kind even though we were just there for happy hour on the patio, and they offer water you can pour yourself near the door. I loved also that many of their cocktails come in a cute branded plastic cup that's better for outdoors, and was fun for my kiddo to enjoy her kids drink out of without me worrying about her breaking glass. I honestly can't wait to return once it cools down. read more

Joseph is a fantastic bartender and server! He made us feel at home on our second visit here. The Arny Palmy is delicious!! I had two of them and they were strong! I don't drink much anymore, so I was glad they had self serve water. I had 4 glasses of it. The tall boy special was Coors Original Banquet Beer. Fantastic! What a cool vibe here. We needed a place to hang out before the KC Current game for snacks and drinks. We decided to check this place out after hearing so much about it. This place is such a vibe. Such a great addition to the Rivermarket area. The drink menu is small. NA drinks are included. Easy to choose. You can either order at the bar or with a server. The bar area is very small. Maybe 10 sittings at the bar and about 6 small tables? They also have a patio sitting. We all got smashed burger from Disco Burger. It was tasty! Crispy burger edges and soft burger buns. Ok to be honest, I wasn't initially excited when my girl friends picked burgers at Varsity Club for girls night. However, I was so pleasantly surprised! I didn't do any research beforehand and was definitely expecting a fast food type vibe. Not the case! Varsity Club is such a cool little spot in the River Market! For fellow Kansas Citians - it almost gave a Jim's Alley Bar vibe. Bonus points given for the fact there was a disco ball. The smash burgers are delicious! Instead of ordering with your server, you order via QR code and pick up your order outside. It was pretty busy the Friday night we were there, and our food took a bit longer than expected. One of my favorite neighborhood bars! I am so lucky I live so close to this place. It's laid back and not pretentious however, it definitely has style. The bar tenders are always attentive even when the small bar is packed (at it does it crowded) it's nice to be able to take your drinks out on the patio. I love enjoying the orange wine outside and ordering up a disco burger, the attached permanent food truck on property. I've never tried a cocktail here but I've been intrigued by the grilled martini which has grilled olives but, the crisp dry orange wine has my heart. Also, the prices are very reasonable so, you don't have to expect to pay a pretty penny to enjoy a glass of wine and maybe even a burger or patty melt (which is my personal favorite) read more

This place is cool! It's 5 pm and happy people, music, Chenille Beads, tonight on the covered patio, 1st time for music here, it is a ticketed event. The bar has 10 chairs and 2 TVs, one is playing vintage soccer games (cool again) and the other is anime and seating area had 8 tables. Varsity Club has been the perfect addition to River Market. Dimly-lit, intimate, and swanky, Varsity Club is the perfect cocktail spot (open late!) to grab drinks with friends. It's cave-like inside with rock/brick walls, and it gets loud in there, so you're not going to have the best conversation of your life, but it's the perfect fun bar atmosphere. The space inside is small -- it was full by 5:45 pm on a Friday night. Order at the bar in the back, or order from one of the employees roaming around with an iPad. Varsity Club has a lovely cocktail menu (including NA options). Great happy hour deals. The bangarang and the spaghett are delicious and refreshing. They also have a small patio with the Disco Burger truck. A burger, fries, and a delicious cocktail -- what more could you ask for? Parking in River Market can be challenging. Located by the City Market park, so it's centrally located between paid street parking and City Market parking. I'm lucky to have Varsity Club as a walkable neighborhood bar. read more

This was my first time at Varsity Club. I really enjoyed my time there. One of the owners came and talked with our group. While I personally don't partake in a. Alcoholic beverage the NA drink I had was fantastic. It was called the Bangarang. You can also get it with your spirit of choice. Others in my party did have drinks and I heard no complaints. You also have the option to order food from the food truck on the outside patio. Everyone's food looked delicious and there was nothing left behind. It's a great place to link up with finds for a drink after work, we were there on a Monday night and while not packed, there was still a decent crowd. read more

I had no idea this place existed but I was in the area and Yelp directed me to their door. It's located not too far from City Market-definitely within walking distance. They have a good sized outdoor patio area that would be lovely to sit at on a nice day. The inside is a not huge but it's not terribly small either. There's tables and even bar seating. The staff were all friendly and attentive. You can also order food from Disco Burger. They have a van outside where you can place an order or you can order from one of the handy QR codes inside and out. Highly recommend! They offer a wide range of cocktails and a few beer options. I went with a Moneygun: Irish whiskey, apple brandy, brown sugar, and Granny Smith apple. I felt like at $15 a pop the cocktails would be a little more garnished up. Mine was pretty simple but it was tasty and quite large. Also, on Monday they offer 20% so that's a nice perk and definitely a great reason to stroll down there. I like having another great option in the River Market to grab some good drinks and food. I definitely recommend it and will return. read more

I went around 5pm the ordering system kinda sucks if you want a burger you order outside. I tried to go inside to eat but it was full. If you order a soda you still have to go to the bar. It was $3 for a can of diet soda! Which you have to pour into a cup of ice yourself. Took nearly 40 minutes to get my order and while the food was OK I cant recommend this place. read more

Not sure if to post this here or Disco Burger but same same. New dive bar in City Market partnered with Disco Burger. The bar is first come first serve, so come early as it gets busy on the weekends. Bar menu is nice mix of house cocktails, beers and nonalcoholic beverages. From the menu there is QR code in which you order food from. You'll have to step outside to get food and bring it in. Drinks were great. Had a Negroni, my personal favorite, and my equalizer amongst comparing bars. Also had the margarita and dang was that strong! In regards to food of course I had the double smash burger and fries. Pretty typical of smash burger- American cheese, onions, pickles and their special disco sauce. Nothing revolutionary but still very tasty. I imagine it's impeccable with a few more drinks in you. Vibe is on point. Classic dive bar with no frills but at same time feels cozy. Great indie synth music playing to finish it off. Final review: 4.5/5 stars. Pretty nice addition to the burger and bar scene in KC. Would be great place to watch game, or maybe afterwards for a bite to eat. Even better can hop right on the streetcar to get yourself safely home. read more

Love the vibe, love the service, love the menu! This is such a great use of space in the River Market. I love that Disco Burger has a home and Varsity Club compliments the simplicity of Disco Burger so well. The drinks are so good! My husband and our friends all ordered something different and no one was disappointed. This is a great addition to the area! Bartender purposely tried to withhold appropriate change. Was charged $20 for two well whiskey cokes (not sure how much well drinks go for here, but this seems like the start of the scam). Paid $100 cash but was given 70 back. That bartender immediately scurried off. I brought up the change issue with the other individual at the bar, only to have the initial swindler come back when she realized her ruse didnt work, immediately acknowledging that they forgot to provide an extra $10 back. Peculiar how they knew exactly the amount missing instantaneously without ever having brought it up to them- unless they did it purposely... there were other clues as well but this post is already too long. Overall this sucks because the food was good and the initial bartender was pretty chill. If you're going to try to swindle your customers pour more stiff drinks read more

Our drinks were awesome, love the indoor/outdoor seating! They do keep capacity limits, so we did have to wait a couple minutes to go in. Cosmo Burger truck closes around 10 so we weren't able to try it this visit. Really neat esthetic and lighting-- great for a date in River Market! That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana.
