The sign called to me as I past it. Mecca Hair Studio. Insert angelic chorus here. I am a girl born with unruly curly hair. My hair is the type of curl you see people getting treatments in order to get. That sounds nice right? Wrong. It often means I'll have a frizzy mess if I don't have it done just right. Since coming to LA I've really had a strong desire for a neighborhood beauty salon. Often fancier places give you the hair cut they think you should want and not the hair cut your hair needs. Please see my review in which I walked out looking like a Q-tip. Anyhow I set up my appointment with Sugar (raging fantastic Queen of Awesome) and I came on in. When I arrived no one seemed to know exactly who my appointment was with. So I waited about twenty minutes until my stylist Madina showed up. I wasn't that miffed if only because after growing up going exclusively to Black salons I knew my hair would be far better than when I came in. And oh I was right. I got a blow dry and and flat iron and I walked out looked looking like I was born with straight hair. It moved well, stayed glossy and had enough bounce and shine for six people. Also have I mentioned the shop talk? Glorious and drama. Everything totaled to 70 bucks which I thought was a tad bit pricey since my hair is short, but I was so satisfied with the result. As of late, I've been hesitant to review hair salons. Mostly because as women, we usually go to particular stylist regardless of which salon they are at or how many times they change salons. That's how I was with D'Juan. Followed his ass for years even all the way out to bumble fuq Palmdale. Well one day D'Juan disappeared. Straight MIA, leaving me SOL. And that's how I was referred to Jasmine and Mecca Hair Studio. She's been doing my hair since April 2012. Granted I only go every 7-10 weeks for relaxer touchups, but she's helped the growth and overall health of my hair tremendously. I mostly appreciate the fact that I'm not forced by the salon to get a "style". I don't need all that unnecessary heat and curls and sh*t just for everyday wear n go! Jasmine does my touchup, washes, conditions, blow dries me, and sends me on my merry way. 75-90 mins TOPS! She's always (always always!) on time, offers me magazines, makes sure I don't leave with a soaking wet shirt back...overall I'm very pleased going to see her. Regarding the salon itself...yuh know your favorite taco shop? Kinda hole-in-the-wall but has the best damn al pastor you ever did inhale? Well that's kinda like Mecca. It's clean and gets the 'do done, but some people might think Tabatha Coffey would love to take over this salon! It could use a fresh coat of paint and maybe some new furniture, but hey the walls and chairs aren't doing my hair so what do I care. This is actually a follow-up review to my "Whacko's Hair Salon" interview earlier today. I have actually had my hair cut at one other salon, and this is the one. And only out of pure necessity. I had just returned from a trip back to the midwest to visit my family. For some odd reason, when I'm in a winter climate, my hair starts to dreadlock itself. I hadn't had my hair cut in over 6 months, so needless to say, I was lookin' a little rough. About a day after I returned to LA, my manager calls me with an audition for 7th Heaven...and I only have 6 hours to prepare. Knowing that pretty much everyone on that show has this pristine, puritanical appearance, I knew I needed a hair cut, and I needed it NOW. I quickly consult the Yellowpages, and stumble upon Mecca. I explain my situation, and they set me up with an appointment for one hour later. The man on the phone tells me to ask for "Sugar". This is basically how it went down: As I walk in to the hair salon, my jaw drops. It was like I just walked on to the set of "Beauty Shop", and I was Whitey. Everyone in the salon goes dead quiet and just stares at me. I take a deep breath, and approach the counter. The customers resume banter. Me: "High, um, I have an appointment. With Sugar." Counter Guy: (Taking in the knotted mass that is my hair) Mmm Hmm...I would say you do. Sugar! Sugar, easily 6'6", looks like an NBA player, only more, um, "effeminate". Sugar: (Also takes my tangled mane) "Damn, girl! What is up with this lovely hair?!" Me: I didn't untangle it for a while. Can you fix it? I really just need a trim. Sugar: I think I can help you out. After an hour that involved a deep conditioning, de-knotting, and an overly zealous trim, my hair was in tip-top shape. BUT, it cost me $100. That's a bit over priced, if you ask me. I pay $20 just for a trim, and I didn't feel like a hell of a lot more work went into that process. Had the atmosphere been a little more like an upscale salon, I could have justified the price. read more

I came in with a very specific braiding style in mind, when I called for my appointment the man I spoke to was super accommodating offering me an appointment the best day and answering all my questions. The next day I realized I actually needed to get in earlier, he called my stylist for me and she came an hour early to accommodate me. When I arrived she was already there and waiting for me (which if you've been to black hair salons, you know that's a MIRACLE) Suge, and her assistant baby Suge took care of me and my hair looks DOPE. They are both hilarious and made me laugh the whole time. The shop is super vibey with a lot of characters coming in and out. All around good day and great hair experience. I was also in and out within two hours, another small miracle. Parking was easy, and unmetered on the street (before 4pm) Suge, I love you..... And I will be back soon! read more

Came in for a weave takedown and called with very short notice and the owner Sugar i believe was very accomodating and called me back within 5 minutes to confirm that it was good to come in and have it taken care of. On top of that was not trying to charge an arm and a leg... Some of these shops have ridiculous prices for a weave takedown... A fan and will most likely be back. read more

DO NOT GO HERE I got a relaxer and now I have severe burns on my scalp. This could have easily been avoided if my stylist listened to me when I told her that I had a sensitive scalp. Sensitive scalp or not though, putting relaxer on somethings scalp with no base or oil..... that's just bad practice. read more

I have short relaxed which is currently growing out, so when I was looking for a place, I wanted to make sure they not only knew how to do black hair but they KNEW how to do black hair. I didn't want a cookie cutter look but a style as well. So my appt. was with Katrina at 8am and she showed up at 8:10 and it was a good thing because I was leaving at 8:15. I told her I needed a retouch and a style which totaled to $70. This was fine because it ranges from $65-80 anyway. I am usually not a talker and would rather just keep to myself but since it was totally silence (8am appt.) there was a need for some type of noise. Katrina was very nice and does her job very well...I did underestimate how long I would be there, but I have short hair it is better to mold it under the dryer and that's a task within itself. I was VERY pleased with the result and I can honestly say that I will be back. I also like the fact that when I called they told me upfront how much everything would cost and that they only excepted cash. It is better to know than to be surprised later. They have a small parking lot since they are located in a small shopping center type area so you might have to park on the street. Overall I would recommend this place! read more

I am a male. I've been getting my hair cut and my beard trimmed every 2 weeks at this shop by my barber named Trey for 4 yrs now. I won't let anyone else do my hair. He knows what he is doing and I can't recall anyone who has ever done a better job. I call him in advance so i never have to wait. He truly is the best! read more

Mecca Hair Studio is the best to go for all your hair care needs! Let me share my braiding experience. Monique my hair dresser greeted me with a warm welcoming smile and invited me to sit down and put my things down. I work in a customer service enviorment as a flight attendant, so I can tell you this started out really good. Well it didn't take long to find out, that I needed a trim.. I have not had a trim in years for the previous place, kept cutting off my hair and knew nothing about styling it. So this was a big deal for me, to genune care to be a priority. It made me feel safe. After the trim, my hair not only looked manageable it felt beautiful to run my hands through it and not have tangles. The owner Sugar is also very professional, personable, down to earth, pleasant, and very knowledgable. Mecca Hair old school flair, family envirnoment . As Monique was braiding, she explain, the moisture she provided for my hair protection. We communicated the entire time and i feel we both had a really good time. Did I mention, her hands move really fast, because I was so shocked when she was done! She is gentle and I have not smacked my head once from the braids being too tight. I have finally found a place that, can really take care of my hair. I am pretty good about people and this spot is the right one!! I trust Mecca Hair Salon with my hair! Try them u wont be disappointed!!!!! The lady who does my weave and my natural hair at the Mecca Studio is named Roxie. She is excellent. She always advises me as to the best hair to use, and my weave always looks exceptional. She is the one who made me realize that a weave could work for me. At first I was reluctant, but I am a real estate professional and I work out at the gym 6 days a week. I needed something that will allow me to look nice, professional and carry a busy schedule, but also allow me to relax and enjoy myself freely at a party, in the pool, Jacuzzi or even on a cruise! - the weave was it. (I used to wear braids, but I find that with the weave I don't lose nearly as much hair as with the braids when I take it out.) Roxie takes care of my weave and my natural hair such that my natural hair is almost as long as the weave. But I still wear the weave because I still work out. I see some of the women at the gym who try to do it without a weave and they just look "well you know that's not going to work". Loving my weave and loving Roxie at the Mecca Studio. read more

I have only dealt with this salon once in my life about three years ago. I had an appointment at 5:30 but the girl that was supposed to be doing my hair didn't show up until 7:30. I should have left then but the gentleman at the front desk was very nice. He is the only good thing about this place. I believe he goes by the name "Sugar'. I just wanted a simple weave. I wish I could remember the girl's name but it escapes me. I guess my bad experience gave me a memory block. Shortly after starting on my hair the chaos began. She broke out some alcohol and invited some of her "homies" to the shop while she did my hair. It basically turned into a club situation after that. She spent the entire time complaining about how late it was and how she need to leave in the morning to go to Vegas. This was THE most unprofessional beautician I have ever encountered. The only reason I endure this treatment is because I had a wedding to attend the next day. Needless to say my hair came out looking awful. The tracks were showing and I actually lost a track a few days later. Oh and to add insult to injury she actually asked me for a tip!!!! I was there until about 3 am. And she really believed that she did a good job after she was done. It has been three years and I still get steamed when I think about it. read more

Well to my suprise the reviews that were posted previously had me excepting something totally different..... First the shop is very clean and everyone there was so polite...Sugar was the owner who welcomed me with his bright smile and my stylist was Ebony....She has her own private room and the service was outstanding , I wear short hair and she has it mastered....It takes a lot to make me happy when it comes to my hair and she made me smile and smile again...All I can say that if you looking for excellent service and a nice atmosphere try Mecca hair and if you looking for the best hair care for a short cuts try Ebony you wont be disappointed. read more

I am visiting Southern California on business for two weeks, and I noticed that a track in my weave had lifted and was exposed. A person that I had just met during this visit referred me to Rashida at Mecca Hair Salon. I was nervous at first because I had paid quite a bit for the weave that I had and I was not happy with the quality of the weave. I was afraid that I would end up spending more money and still not being happy. Rashida assured me that she could help me. Due to the poor quality of my weave, Rashida suggested that we take it out and start over. She went with me to the beauty supply store to get the hair that was appropriate for my situation. Rashida took her time with my hair and delivered a very polished and professional look. The only thing that I am sad about is that I live in Northern California and I can't go to her on regular bases, however Rashida gave me a referral. My hope is that her referral is as good as Rashida is at her work. read more
