Pt Richmond is a great branch! Unlike the larger banks, their service is personal, efficient and frequently over the top! I'd like to call out Avil, the teller first. He has called us at home to check on a check...not required but super professional and courteous. Jeff, the Operations Manager has done the same and, Sonja the branch manager is always ready to step up. All are all amazing. A second teller is also there. I've dealt with her much less but she is always very professional and courteous. If you want to be treated like a person and a valued customer, this is the bank for you. read more

I'm leaving this bank after decades because after being scammed, Mechanics informed me that because the scammer had my personal information, the theft was legit. It would not have been theft/fraud if they DIDN'T have my information! This half-butted fake logic to get out of addressing security issues is too much. In addition to their bad security allowing someone to access my account through PayPal to make purchases that were sent overseas. Very disappointing. My alternatives are few, so I guess I'll be pulling my savings out in cash. They were a good bank for many years. Now they are just another greedy uncaring product of the times. They seem to be overly concerned with helping non customers here. I've been a Mechanics Bank customer for over 20 years and recently went here for change on a $100 bill. I should have started with "I'm a longtime customer" because the teller guy rudely asked if I am a customer here before even wanting to help me. When it comes down to it, even non-customers should be able to walk in to any bank and get change. Cash is cash and this is still America. read more

Four stars but ONLY and I mean ONLY because the two guys working there when I walked in seemed cool and were "just following policy". I am a relatively new resident of Pt. Richmond. No Wells Fargo nearby, so went here to see if it was a good place to transfer all my family (and my business) WF accounts for convenience purposes (because I now live only about 5 minutes from this location in Pt. Richmond). After waiting in a short line, the teller (a nice professional guy) asked "Can I help you?" I said that my now adult daughter has a US Savings bond (now "matured") for one hundred dollars, and would it be OK for her to come in and cash it out? The teller asked another teller if that was OK, and the other teller said they could only do that "for current customers only". Fair enough and no hard feelings, so I left. BUT: Whoever is running that branch and making the rules really really has it backwards. Anyone who walks into the door is a potential customer- even if not on that day- and should walk out thinking "this place is great-I will be back and tell everyone I know to go here!!!". Even if the guy walking in the door just wants to break a ten dollar bill. He can be told "Hey if you ever want to open an account here, here's some information, and I will take good care of you!!" etc. But the policy of this branch is: Until and unless you are a customer here, don't bother to ask us for anything even though it costs us nothing and- by the way- we actually aren't all that interested whether you ever become a customer here in the future. I adore my branch in Point Richmond- every one of them. But for a bank to not have customer service available 24/7 is just totally unacceptable. I work a lot and when I need to move money I am doing it for a reason. This bank has cost me thousands of dollars, left me stranded at a gas station, and has si.ply absurd fees. They're a small bank so there aren't many staff; however, they're located in downtown Point Richmond so there isn't too much going on anyway. What is great about Mechanics Bank is that they are local to the Bay Area, they refund all bank fees from other ATMs, and they are quick to alert you of any possible fraudulent charges. If you lose or misplace your debit card, they quickly send another one out, and they can help you reset your pin. Overall, we've been banking at Mechanics for a few years now and won't be switching banks anytime soon. read more

In a world where financial institutions seem so unstable, I feel perfectly secure with my bank. Weird, huh? Even though Mechanics Bank isn't the biggest bank out there, it does provide all the big bank perks, and with the checking plan I have it reimburses me for charges incurred when I use a non-Mechanics Bank ATM. So who needs the big banks? Not this girl. The service has always been terrific - especially Sonja and Linda. And this particular branch in the restored railway building is a great fit for Point Richmond. read more

2nd Review: I was very impressed that the Branch Manager Bob apologized to me face to face and offered to hand-deliver my cashier's check to save me the trip. I thanked him and told him I would pick it up, but he insisted. I'd say that was a pretty good comeback, although I do not expect a warm welcome from the lady from my first review. Terrible bank. Irene Penney put a 10 day hold on my deposit even though I have had an account with them for a number of years. Not at all helpful when I spoke to her, said I could speak to the manager, but too bad, he is on vacation! She then went silent and did not offer any other solutions. Every joke I heard in BSchool about BankersBrains was confirmed today. This branch had $16,000 on deposit when the account-holder sharing my last name appeared wishing to deposit $25,000 signed over to him by me. The check was a Government Check cut by a Bay Area county entity far older than MechBank! So, after the depositor politely asked to see the manager, MB refused to take the deposit, not even offering to put a hold on it while funds cleared, etc., and $41K walked out of their historic little rail-building. As a PR resident I would love to support local biz, but my previous dealings with this branch and its manager have been a disappointment too. read more

the first thing that attracted me to this bank was there cool name and building. i have been with the big bank system in the past. i like the personal service here. as for some of the other comets i see all most all other banks charge for cashing their own check if you don't have an account. but here i can use my ATM anywhere in the world and not get charged for using another banks ATM. Frustrating place to do business. Surprised by how rude both tellers were today. The banking guys are nice, just not super organized. One guy just went above and beyond to help (why it's two stars otherwise it's definitely a one star scenario). The team really had a chance to impress me by being nice even though I had lots of cash (and coin jeez) at the end of the day - instead I just got stared at and it was clear that were annoyed that it was past five. I am a happy longtime customer, from the time I decided to dump the big bad banks. The customer service is more than terrific; the onsite branch manager Bob has gone out of his way to help me several times, as has the banking officer Andrea. The tellers are all friendly, efficient, knowledgeable and helpful. The old railroad waiting room is such a nice change from most sterile bank buildings. And I love that I can take money out at any bank anywhere, and Mechanics will refund me the other bank's fees! read more

Really gone downhill, used to be a friendly community bank, terrible customer service (if you can reach anyone) find a credit union.

Terrible experience. We have been trying to payoff a loan for almost three weeks and the bank refuses to issue a payoff demand to title. An insider informed me that it is bank policy to delay as long as possible to squeeze additional interest out of their clients. I dislike the big banks, so Mechanics is a good compromise. The had the services I need and still offer a very personal touch (at least this branch). The tellers have gotten to know me and the branch manager ("Bob") comes over to say "hello" often when I am in line. Usually there is very little wait and the service is friendly. The "back office" they have to deal with isn't great; several times I have been told someone would contact me about certain services, and it hasn't happened. But, the branch personnel make up for that. read more
