I took my 88-year-old uncle here on multiple occasions to have cataracts removed from both eyes. Overall, the staff at Med-Laser Surgical Center, which appears to be closely affiliated with DLP Eye Group, were generally courteous and professional. The process itself, however, feels like navigating a bureaucracy. After check-in at DLP comes a long wait, a brief vision test, another wait in a second room, a second test, and yet another delay before finally seeing the doctor--usually for no more than five minutes. Even scheduling the next appointment involves more waiting. It all feels more like an assembly line than patient-centered care. Then there is the DLP "care coordinator," Selena ("Seli"). Perhaps she's overworked, but she came across as curt and indifferent, showing little empathy for patients' time or health challenges. My uncle is hard of hearing, and despite asking her to slow down and speak up, he struggled to understand her. Equally concerning is the near-impossibility of reaching anyone at either facility. Calls go unanswered, voicemails are ignored, and hold times seem endless. I had a simple billing question--regarding a statement for something I believed was already paid--and still haven't received a response. These communication failures, coupled with a lack of basic courtesy from certain staff, reflect a deeper problem in healthcare today. Patients and families deserve responsiveness and respect, not indifference disguised as efficiency. Doctors and their teams must do much better. read more

Sorry in advance, for a negative review. I had undergone a Vitrectomy surgery at Med-Laser back in July 2025. And, this was perhaps - the most unpleasant experience I've had. Recently, due to my retinal detachment, I had multiple surgeries (at other facilities, including an additional Cataract surgery). By far, the Med-Laser Surgical Center experience was the worst. An outdated, unwelcoming, gloomy, cold (both literally and figuratively) facility, to begin with. Reminds more of a warehouse more than a surgery center. Staff was courteous and working hard (Thank you for that!) However, one major oversight, if not lack of care, -- was that they did not bother connecting an IV machine, even though that's one of the first things they're supposed to do when a patient arrives. Mind you, patients are typically dehydrated - since no drinking (not even a sip of water!) is allowed 8+ hours prior to surgery. Again, at other surgery facilities they immediately connected an IV machine to supply much needed liquids into the patient's body. But not at this "Med-Laser" facility. Lack of care? Or lack of experience? They ignored all my pleas and requests, just responded "Don't worry..." The surgery itself was delayed by almost 2 hours. Waited and waited... (while being dehydrated, mind you). Finally, upon completion of the surgery, the staff (including my operating doctor - who demonstrated negligence... but that's a whole separate story) did not turn me face-down in time, -- which resulted the silicone oil leaking into the front part of my eye, -- causing further complications. Again, I've asked the surgical assistants multiple times about the *IMMEDIATELY REQUIRED* face-down position, but they just said "Don't worry...". (and my doctor left, without even checking up on me). To this day, I am suffering due to this crucial mistake, as well as the overall lousy surgery done. Will have to undergo another surgery to remove the oil from the anterior chamber of the eye and to fix other mistakes made during this latest procedure. Risks will be involved... but I have no other choice. I do not recommend this facility. Thank you for reading my review. read more

Let's send some love and appreciation to the amazing Dr. Uchio, who led my dad's eye care from beginning to end with professionalism and compassion. His expertise made all the difference, and we're truly grateful. On the other hand, I feel it's important to acknowledge the experience we had with Celene, the treatment coordinator. While I wish I could speak as positively about her as I do about Dr. Uchio, our experience was unfortunately the opposite. Her approach to patient care was not only lacking but, at times, deeply frustrating. Here are a few issues we encountered: * Careless: She seemed unconcerned with recommending the best options for my dad's eye health. * Biased: Her willingness to assist appeared to depend more on how services were being paid for than on what was best for the patient. * Impolite: She repeatedly called regarding payment but offered no guidance or support on how to complete the process. If you're ever asked to wait for her or referred to her for help, I strongly recommend asking for another coordinator. Side note: It's ironic how someone with such a disregard for detail ended up in a role that requires so much of it. (And frankly, the quality of her cosmetic decisions seems to reflect that as well.) Lastly, if you try to escalate concerns to management, don't expect much. You might get a call weeks later only to be told that she's a top employee with a wall of awards -- which, sadly, says more about their internal standards than anything else. read more

Staff is really nice and professional at this location they take the time with every patience and make you feel like family. I am really satisficed how my mothers surgery went well and how everyone treated her at this location. Keep up the good work and elder people do deserve to be treated by people who care. I want to say I was mislead by the ads, but that's really the only reason I didn't rate this place 5 stars. It's a nice clinic, with semi-friendly people, and a very smart doctor. On to the doctor. The doctor was very blunt and didn't try to sell me any pipe dreams. I was told I would need multiple procedures due to the damage in my eyes. I appreciate the honesty from the doctor. De la pena surgery center - horrible. Wait with an appointment for surgery is ridiculous. Appointment was scheduled for 7:30. It's 2 hours later and no call in yet. We were told to wait - receptionist said they scheduled 4 people per appointment slot. Like cattle- do as your told. Do not bring your elderly parents or family here. DO NOT schedule your eye surgery at Med-Laser Surgical Center. The place is filthy. Your eyes and vision are precious and one simple mistake can ruin your life. Front staff are rude, they spend more time gossiping about other workers and patients. My appointment was at 7:30 am and surgery did not begin till 3 hours later.They are inept in their work. They pretend to call your insurance carrier to approve the services and tell you that all services have been approved. Weeks after your surgery, you get a letter from collections threatening legal action if you do not pay immediately. They DID NOT call my Insurance and services were not approved and they DID NOT bill my medical insurance. They found it easier to send me straight to collection. After receiving the collections letter, I tried calling many times and wrote to them to correct their mistake or their normal method of operation to no avail. My next step is to file a claim with the American Medical Association, The Better business Bureau and all other appropriate governmental regulatory agencies against all parties responsible for ruining my credit and a lawsuit for damages and for their deceitful, malicious and negligent practices as well as for Intention and Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress and whatever other legal remedies are deemed appropriate. After writing to the Med-Laser Center, the referring doctor and the Collections Agency many times, none of them have taken any action to correct their deceitful actions nor have they bothered to bill my medical insurance. read more

Went back today for my husband to get his other eye done. Same great staff in the back BUT the receptionist who was sitting on the right was just plain nasty. Not only to me but to everyone who she talked to on the phone. All the people in the back are so great it just sucks she brings it down. be nice lady or don't deal with the public. read more

Front staff very kind and helpful, nurse was very nice to mom allow me to stay with her to the last minute , gave her pre op and post surgery instructions ,now i'm just waiting for the surgery to be done!! Dr. Mandel is amazing with his patients. Very prompt and courteous. The front office however, absolutely rude in service to the patients. Specific encounter with Janet who has no sense of courtesy to the patients when speaking to them. Her communication entails eye rolling, sarcasm, and a lot of attitude. I work in the medical field and therefore, I understand the frustration and overwhelming feeling of the work load and constant repetitive questions from patients. we are in this field to help educate our patients even after the same repetitive questions. Patients need the reassurance that we haven't forgotten them and that they will be helped shortly. After being advised that the doctor was in surgery and he would be about 1-2 hours prior to getting to my mother, we decided to go get a bite to eat. We took 20 minutes max and upon our arrival, Janet was prompt to state "you would be lucky if the doctor still sees you because he probably left already". Luckily he was still in the office and was able to tend to my mother. The wait time was about 3 hours and the visit was max about 5 minutes. Then an additional 10minutes wait time for the discharge papers from the front office. At this point I was so upset that I was keeping my distance so I forgot to ask for a guardianship letter stating I accompanied my mother to her appointment. I went back in and the other front office girl with the glasses stated I had to wait because she was really busy. When she finally tended to me, she provided me with a business card to "de la Peña eye clinic" with my mothers name and appointment time, not even a business card from the laser eye clinic. I had cataract surgery done here in each eye, and couldn't be happier with the results. The surgeries were both done efficiently and perfectly, and the nurses and surgical team were very kind and gentle with me. They explained everything, each step of the way. I'm especially impressed with Helen and Jeanette, who were so pleasant and patient with me both times. Also, the staff at the front desk is also excellent. Most important, though, is the surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Mandel, who did both my surgeries and left me with 20/20 vision after a lifetime of horrible astigmatism! I don't even have to wear glasses anymore. Dr. Mandel is extremely attentive, kind, and explained the different surgical options to me very clearly.
