I feel like I should review this bar to increase their star rating, for what it's worth. I'm definitely a fan! This rating is based on the beer selection, the ambiance and the service - I haven't yet had the pleasure of trying the food, but it's high on my list. Mostly I just love a good, unique beer, and specifically trying new ones, and this place has never let me down. Pretty standard for a place like this, but I don't have to be in Uptown, which is a plus. As for the service, I've had a few particularly positive experiences. On one occasion, I was trying to book a reservation for one of their beer dinners, which was sold out. I ended up chatting with the beer master, who asked if there was any particular beer I'd like for him to tap, and informed me that someone had canceled that the hostess didn't know about, and we could have the spot. Very cool guy. We ended up not getting to go to the dinner, but I was impressed with the service. I also planned my boyfriend's birthday gathering here, where we were able to reserve the giant table in the semi-private room for no additional fee. They were extremely accommodating, and everyone had a great time. I'll update this review once I've had the food. :) read more

A great place for atmosphere and a beer. A nice selection of rare and craft brews though I wouldn't be quite as quick to proclaim it as "the most taps in Dallas," as I've seen on another review. However, they did have some interesting and different brews. I also discovered that they have a few small barrels on site and will be experimented with barrel aging their own cocktails. Sounds interesting! The stained glass windows and art decor is pleasant and makes this place a definite step above from your average pub or eatery. The first time I went I had a great experience! The food was fantastic, our waiter was attentive, and the beer was good. The second time I went, the wait was ridiculous. We watched open tables sit while we waited. And people who came in after us were seated before. After waiting quite some time, we were put outside. It took a while for a waitress to attend to us. The food! The teriyaki tofu was alright, but I've had way better. The lamb was different and I had a hard time finishing the dish. Definitely try the moth balls, those were yummy. The hummus is also really good, though I have yet to have bad hummus at a decent restaurant. The funnel cake with bacon lollipops is a unique and delicious dish. Best of all, the cobbler was amazing! If you don't think the food looks appetizing, at least go for the dessert. It was the best part of our 2 hours there. read more

I came here for my birthday with 10 of my friends and it was so much fun. The ambiance was awesome. Kinda loud but made for a good party dinner. Our waitress took care of everything and made sure we had a blast. The drinks were flowing and so were the tapas style food. Everything was delicious. The bacon skewers were probably the biggest hit but my favorite was the shrimp and grits. Amazing! I definitely recommend getting a beer flight if you're a fan of beer. When I think gastropub I think of a pub, someplace old, dark and cozy. Maybe I shouldn't, maybe gastropubs are meant to be fancier and a little more swanky. Meddlesome Moth is definitely on the fancier and swankier side, but then again it is in Dallas. I'm just mentioning it because it was unexpected, however it had a very cool vibe with lots of tables, artwork, and a nice long bar. They also took reservations which is always a plus. I would highly recommend those reservations, we were there fairly early on a Tuesday and it was packed! The staff was super nice, which I always have like to comment on. I thought the flight was a bit overpriced, especially if you're taking chances on beers you don't know but there were so many beers I wanted to try I couldn't resist. I found 2 new ones I loved and was excited to see there were plenty of Texas brews. The food/food presentation was pretty amazing. We decided to try a few things, and I love to share so it worked well. Overall we loved the shrimp and grits and pork belly the best. I had had pork belly once before and wasn't so into it, but now I know how it should be cooked and taste and I thought they did a great job. Up scale brew pub with an impressive selection of draught, bottled, and canned beers. And they do flights. Their food is mostly shared plates and bar snack sized appetizers, but they offer a few normal one-person portion dishes as well. It's a great place for groups. They've got some seasonal options, lots of meat, good desserts, all creative and very well crafted. I enjoyed their "Moth-Balls", which turned out to be decadently upgraded ricotta cheese balls. The location is great too - close to I-35 and easy to navigate. The restaurant space is on the smaller side, and it was loud both times that I've gone so far (yes, I would go back). Based on the good reviews, we decided to eat here for date night one Friday. Seating was ample when we got there at around 7:30pm. We sat in the pretty shaded patio. I ordered the Lime cooler- too much citrus for my taste. We also had the Moth balls- crowd favorite- unfortunately it was too much cheese and the pasta tasted raw! The papaya guacamole was fresh and tasty, while the shrimp & grits though very good, could've been seasoned better. Next time, I want to come back and try a more balanced meal- one that won't leave me feeling so full and heavy! read more

Fantastic meal! We were staying in Oaklawn and looking for some place close on a cold evening for dinner. We didn't have reservations for a Friday night but the hostess got us a table in the back near some lively tables. This place is fun and had a great energy with a room full of people enjoying the food and drinks. We started off with the charcuterie board and we're blown away. The portions are very generous but we managed to eat everything on it. The meats, cheeses, cucumber and okra pickles, marinated cherries, almonds, were all above and beyond. You could tell thought went into the board. We had the ribeye for dinner and it was on of the best steaks I have ever had. The meat had great flavor and was cooked perfectly and it was definitely enough to share. The veggies were a pepper blend but I imagine that all their seasonal vegetables are great after this experience. Not to mention all the great beers and cocktails available and a server who was able to discuss them all. This is definitely on my short list when visiting Dallas for now on. read more

Oh, SO close. This place gets so many things very right, but oddly misses in the kitchen. Great, friendly, helpful staff. Just terrific. I have rarely run into better in the city. And that includes the highest-end joints. One example, on the phone, Heather told me exactly when the place would have a long wait for a table, made our reservation for 8:30, then said that if we wanted to come earlier, there was a chance they could work us in, with the caveat: "worse case, you get to sit at the bar and have a drink." When we got there at 8:00, Heather said there was a wait, but before we could even make it to the bar, she summoned me back and said, conspiratorily, "we can seat you now." There is nothing I could add to the beer comments here. I like beer just fine, and it's great to see a place eschew the usual for the rare, but I'm not educated enough to comment. Food, however.... We weren't expecting a great food experience; would have been plenty happy with good pub grub. But the menu upped our expectations. Hey, sweetbreads! It's a really fine menu for this kind of place. Unfortunately, almost every dish had a significant flaw. First off, it was obvious that great care is taken with every dish. Ingredients were fresh and plating was nice. Well, except for the big spoons that were carelessly laid into the sauce on several plates, rendering them permanently sticky. Aforementioned sweetbreads were prepared in a way I've never seen them. Sheepishly, I liked the accompaniment so much that I never stopped to think about what it was. Onions? Cabbage? Whatever it was, it was delish. But the sweetbreads themselves, while perfectly cooked, tasted chalky somehow. The special, potato salad, also seemed so promising, and looked nice. Then we bit into it, and found the diced potato chunks were so undercooked they were virtually raw. Boudin sausage was OK, if a bit mushy, but the accompanying crawfish tails were caked in thick batter, rendering them virtually tasteless. I could go on, but you get the idea. I really want to like this place, in spite of the terrible name--both cutesy and unappetizing--but they need to fix the food. Don't give up! You can do it. read more

Geez Louise. Started with a yummy glass of Chimay. Love that beer. Ambiance is spot on cool, cool, cool. The Beet Special is AMAZING! Beet infused risotto with blue cheese and walnuts. I mean really??! Could it get more amazing? Not with that dish. We loved it. Pork was a little on the cold side and not as good as expected. Corn was a bit spicy in a yummy way. I was more excited coming here than I should have been. It looked really cool in pictures and I really love the name. And when yes, it has a great look inside, but I was most excited about the food from reading the menu online. The first big problem I encountered was where we were seated. We were in a low-back booth with people sitting at a bar right behind me. And I mean RIGHT behind me, on top of me! I was having a hard time listening to the people I was sitting with because of the conversation going on directly behind my head. I felt like I couldn't focus on anything. That aside, the menu has a lot of great-sounding choices. I think I may have at one point said that I want one of everything. I was having a hard time figuring out how big the sharing portions were so I ordered two meats and a veg. (shin of beef, bone marrow and the brussels) They weren't nearly as good as I hoped they would have been. I think Moth should reduce the portion size to tapas size and reduce the price of each by a third. I didn't need as much as I got and I wanted to try more things but that would have cost too much. Now beers on the other hand, they have that locked down. Outstanding selection and our server was able to describe them well. Finally, i agree with the others in saying this is a terrific beer place and only an ok food place. Come for beer and if you get a little hungry, order the bone marrow and share it. well this place is deffinatley A+ for the atmosphere and bar food like zuchinni chips and fish and chips. If you have someone that is not 21 or you are not 21 i would NOT waste the money here because the food is not very good. started off with the hummus and that was acctually suprisingly delish. Then had some ahi tuna scewers with a ginger soy sauce, no bueno kinna cold as well. Lamb kafta was after that and it was pretty delish. The zuchinni chips looked good but i was in the mood for grub so i went with a big dish and got the chicken, way to much seasoning and wasnt really what i was looking for. Thought it would be a wendy meadows chicken brest kinna like bolsa but boy was i wrong. wait staff seemed like they needed WAYYYYY more people. if you want a good beer and bar food this is your place. read more

We got the drafty 2 seater next to the patio.... too bad it was cold outside.... We had a nice waitress, a cheese tray and a beer sampler. At some point we both noticed that our waitress disappeared (it must have been 30+ minutes since we had seen her...). We finally flagged someone down to help us and before you know it, every other person in the bar was waiting on us- except for our waitress. I was sure she had a meltdown in the back and wouldn't be back. We order some more stuff and another beer....before we ever saw our waitress again. I understand getting busy (someone muttered something about her closing out some checks....what- for the whole bar??). She never even apologized for being gone.... just own the fact you got in the weeds... I'd like you better. It's overpriced, alright food (though my risotto is better), inconvenient to get to, and a limited beer menu for a place that touts specializing in beer and the subpar service.....that's for free. Not impressed and not interested in dropping another $80 for beer and snacks for 2- only to have crappy service. No big deal- I like the Flying Saucer better anyway.... read more

Have been eyeing this place for a while, and a chef that used to work for me is now behind the line (hi Suki) so we decided to check it out one evening when the McKinney Ave haunts held no appeal. Certainly glad we tried the Moth! In addition to the plethora of beers on tap, they've got many more in the bottle, as well as some pretty damn good food. As it was over 100 freakin degrees outside, we decided to go with a lighter Kolsch beer. Very nice and clean taste without that heaviness that accompanies most beers. Don't get me wrong, I like 'em with a little umph as well, but not in this heat. The food was really good too. Tried the Moth Balls, the chicken meat pie, shrimp and grits, and bangers & mash. Very god flavors in all, especially the bangers & mash...made with buffalo sausage & parsnip puree. The shrimp and grits were probably the favorite of the rest of the table, but I was partial to the sausage...as well as the hummus and tapanade plate. Thank you to Suki for sending over dessert...as much as my belly loved it, my waist could've done without it. But thank you again. Good place. Very recommended. read more

Since moving back to Dallas a couple of months ago, I have been 3 times to The Moth. I keep going back for a few reasons... Aesthetically I really love it. The stained glass, the chalk board beer menu, open kitchen with racks filled with canned goods like a Warhol painting. Even the bathroom is nice down to the Dyson hand dryers (I never knew my hands could look like that!) The beer list has got to be one of the best in town. Simply awesome. I have found almost all of the staff to be very friendly. They know their beer and food. Come here and try something new! They will give you suggestions and tastes. I like coming on Rare Beer Wednesday for a taste of whatever they are tapping. The food I have had has been excellent. My favorites are the Thai Mussels and the Pate. Oh that pate......amazing. The Friend hominy is tasty, but very salty. A little goes a long way. The Shrimp and Grits is so good. Just do it....those grits are outta this world. I also like teh crowd. This is a trendy neighborhood gastro pub with a good vibe and fantastic beer selection. We just missed the Sunday brunch that ended at 3pm. The Blanche de Bruxelles Belgian is awesome if you like a good Belgium Witbier. A must try is the Veal Sweetbreads- very flavorful! It's a small portion, so plan to order another item from the menu. The stuffed heirloom is okay.. not worth the $14 but a nice choice if you want to eat light. It's literally a large raw tomato with a scoop of a crab salad on top with tabbouleh on the bottom of the bowl. I wish I would have tried the shrimp and grits...there's always next time. read more

Great experience, excellent food... Insanely awesome beer selection! We randomly found this spot online, while staying in Fort Worth, and decided to make the drive. It's located in the design district in N. Dallas. A little random, but fits in perfectly. There are over 150 craft beers! I wanted to pull a whole 8hr shift here. Our server, Daniel made excellent recommendations and even recommended against a few things. That's how it should be. Daniel was, by far, the best service industry professional we have had in Texas. The food was great! My bride ordered grilled cheese and tomato basil soup... not you average, everyday, run-o-tha-mill grilled cheese. As many times as I have heard about this place, it took me over a year to get here. It was well worth the wait. I made a reservation on Open Table Saturday afternoon for that evening. My original reservation was for 3 people at 8:15. When we got there, it was rocking. Busy and full! Two more friends showed up, which made me think that changing our reservation would create quite the long wait for us. The hostess was wonderful and accommodated us almost right away. We had just enough time to order a drink at the bar. As we sat down at the bar, which had an abundance of seating available, the bartender promptly came over to deliver the menu. There were more pages on the menu devoted to their beer selection than to the food. This is mecca for beer lovers everywhere. Whether it's a flight, draft, or bottle, you have about 4 pages of options. That's around 40 drafts, which rotate, and over 80 bottles. They have a cocktail menu and wine list, which is limited but decent. The food menu complements their beer list by suggesting which brew would go best with each selection. The bar food is that of a gastropub. There are shared plates, salads, entrees, and a selection of sides. Everything looked tasty and unique, so much so that I was tempted to order 4 or 5 plates just to try it all! Since my wallet, and stomach, would not allow for that, I decided I'll just have to come back again. Be forewarned. The food is prepared fresh and delivered when ready, so don't expect to have everyone eating at the same time. I opted for the roasted beet salad with chevre, toasted pecans and apple cider vinaigrette. It was delicate and refreshing. My main course was one of the things they are known for - mussels. I opted for the classic: lemon, butter, white wine and thyme. Delicious! The thyme was the perfect herb and complemented the lightness of the buttery sauce without overpowering the dish. Other selections included thai, frommage, diablo, and catalan mussels. My next visit will include the latter, which is served with spanish chorizo, charred tomatoes, and white wine. I tasted the macaroni and cheese that my friend ordered with gruyere and shredded tenderloin on top. Divine. It appeared to be a small portion, but it's a heavy dish, so it certainly filled her up. The spices, meat and cheese blended perfectly to give the dish a real earthiness. I would recommend having this as a shared plate with the table. On my next visit, menu items to try will include the venison tartare, arugula salad, sweet fennel meatballs, five spice pork belly, and veal sweetbreads. Ok, maybe not all on my next visit! The place itself is adorned with stain glass windows, wood walls and earth-tone colors which give it a laid-back, relaxed, comfortable vibe. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. Their beer mats says they welcome feedback, but they don't really, Pork belly was way too greasy and soggy , devilled eggs too salty with the bacon and crab. Make reservations if you're going here, you'll need them if you don't want to wait. Free valet parking is also a big help. Neat atmosphere here. It used to be a flooring store, and that's evidenced by the "showroom" floor that still exists. If you're a beer drinker, you'll be in heaven. They offer endless brews on tap and have various flights for the beer lover. This is a tapas style place. I've been several times and tried a lot. Some are winners, like the bacon lollipops and the tandoori lamb. Others were good like the hummus and duck wings (don't ask for ranch, they don't have any, which is pretty silly if you ask me). Others weren't worth the effort, like the bone marrow, which is more work than effort. This place might have the most amazing desserts in Dallas. My favorite is the chess pie, which they don't always have on the menu. I've also had the raspberry grit pie (AMAZING), the banana pudding and the pecan pie. DO NOT skip dessert.
