I walked in after seeing their sign on the sidewalk last week (I'd had a meeting nearby and was walking back to my car). It's just a tiny shop with the most beautiful loaves of bread. I left with a gorgeous loaf of rye, but they still had a few options when I arrived in the afternoon on a weekday pretty close to their closing time (several types were sold out, but I still had options). You know what I like more than nice, fresh bread? Apparently eating half a loaf of nice, fresh bread. In a day. By myself. Darn your deliciousness, Europa Crust!!!!!! Now I'm going to have to write a review of the gym tomorrow because I definitely see that happening in my near future. We decided to check out the South of the James farmers market today and walking by you smell the heavenly aroma of fresh bread. Some of which is still warm, it is that fresh. I am actually not a super huge fan of sourdough, which is apparently a big seller of theirs, but I have been dying to try some nice Japanese Milk Rolls, so I grabbed a delicious bag of them and they are AMAZING. They are so soft and delicious and good with butter. And jam. And honey. And plain. And moving your pesto sauce around your plate... I have not found a bad use for them yet, which is probably how I ended up eating half of the bag before bedtime. Delicious carb coma, here I come!!!! read more

I hate to rain on customers' parades and want to acknowledge that (presumably) the bread is delicious. However, I am compelled to share what I observed about the unclean conditions I witnessed at this business in the hopes that the owner(s) see this. Today, I walked by in eager anticipation to try this highly rated bread. As I walked by, I witnessed bread on racks being removed from a personal vehicle's trunk with no cover or any kind of packaging other than the literal racks. Secondly, the people handling it were just in their street clothes, with no gloves or measures not to touch the bread with their soiled street clothing, bare hands, hair, etc. In addition, one of the individuals appeared to be unhoused with clothing that was BEYOND filthy. After he helped unload it, he sat to cough and blow his nose repeatedly in a dirty handkerchief. Next, I looked at the inside of the restaurant, and it looks like it should be condemned. Dirty, bread on very low shelves in the open, being brushed by clothing and anything else that lands on it, not even behind a counter, and customers freely touching them and not buying them, I could go on ad nauseum. Thick dust is visible under shelves, clutter everywhere, a sketchy looking backroom with questionable functions (none of which appear to be food preparation), non-food related clutter on counters, utter food-borne illness inducing chaos. Lastly, to add a cherry on top, the kind young man behind the counter touching bread and the cash register, etc. interchangeably without washing his hands or gloves, cutting the bread using his bare dirty hands, handling it A LOT with his palms while talking etc., then handing me a piece to taste with tongs. I became physically ill while experiencing all of this. I am nauseated while typing and recalling it earlier. How this place is authorized to serve food commercially is alarming. This serves as a reminder to Richmond, VA to stop eating food from establishments unless you have visited the restaurant in person. If you eat from here, pray before and after you eat... read more

My partner and I love fresh bread. I especially love sourdoughs, which is what Europa Crust is known for. My favorite is their San Francisco sourdough. It's a huge treat visiting Europa Crust's brick and mortar. Not only does it have an incredible bread smell upon entering, but you feel like you're walking into your favorite indie film's baker shop with all the ovens and bread leaning against the walls. They usually offer samples, you'll be happy to try their cardamom bread and take a loaf home. They have a self serve layout where you can grab all the breads you want. It's a pretty small shop, but there is a table outside if you want to sit. The owner is friendly and very passionate about bread. This hidden gem bakery is one you don't want to miss. read more

Absolutely lovely local homemade loaf bakery. I'm always on the hunt for the best local multigrain bread (my weird guilty pleasure for some reason) and this place was amazing. 5 out of 5 stars for the friendly service and 5-grain sourdough! I'm all in for supporting local businesses and this bakery is amazing. I couldn't wait to go home so I took a bite of the chunk.. The outer crust was super crisp and inner bread was soft yet enough chewiness to feel the 5 grains in my mouth. It's hard to describe..but you'll get it once you had a bite. I went home, toasted a little, and spread my favorite fig jam. Ah-maazing! I think the owner said he uses his grandmother's sourdough. I hope to visit again! The whole loaf was $8. Just found this bakery a few weeks ago. Have had a couple of their breads and went with the sweet European bread this weekend. Was wonderful and not overly sweet. Even had an opportunity to speak with the owner/baker for a bit. Just a really nice setup all the way around. I had the pleasure of stopping in at Europia Crust for bread the other day and was so glad that I did. As soon as you step in you're greeted by the owner/operator surrounded by proofing loaves ready to be baked and the aromas of ones fresh from the oven. I bought a half loaf of the Rustic Italian and the Nissua Sweet Bread and they were both phenomenal! First off, how cool is it that you can buy a half loaf‽ My family is always leaving bread left over. Don't get me wrong, day old bread is still pretty great, but to be able to buy just the amount you need is even better. So some people are pulp people, some people are crust people. I am squarely in the crust camp. If a loaf doesn't have a good crust, it's not going to be a favorite. Needless to say, that Europia makes a great crust! Give me one of their bread heals any day! All this to say that I'll be heading back to the shop very soon. read more

They apologized for being down to their last few loaves which I thought was awesome that they didn't have a ton of stock near quitting time. The breads are fresh and small batch great. Admittedly, they are a little pricey in the current Age of Inflation, and they are served whole. That said, Jeff will slice your loaves if you ask him. Try the multigrain, sourdough, Italian, and Finnish sweet bread. read more

I work at 1200 East Main and Broad St. downtown and was walking the nearly 1 mile to the grocery store in 99 degree heat because I have everything to make a turkey and Swiss hoagie, aside from some decent bread. I walk 1 block, and there across the street, I see this little bakery. I thought "hey, I bet they have decent bread in there", and they sure did. Got me an Italian baguette which was so awesome to make a sandwich out of. They obviously have all sorts of bread, and olive oil, and coffee beans, just a really cool little spot.
