We went on a Wednesday night for dinner, so it wasn't busy or loud. The service was great, our server was very attentive and friendly. They have a prix fixe menu, which includes artisan bread, salad, and steak with fries. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here, but the food was nothing special. The best part was the bread. The steak was a sirloin which is a tougher cut of meat and it was very chewy. The secret sauce was a gravy that tasted a little gritty. It would have been much better if it came with a chimichurri sauce. The portobello mushroom was okay, so save your money and don't order it. They also give you a second serving of steak and fries. I think most people choose to take it home. We also came to celebrate a special occasion, but they didn't offer anything. It would have been nice if they gave a complimentary dessert. We went in on a Saturday evening so it was extremely packed in there and we waited for quite a while before our server stopped by our table. For drinks my friend got the pineapple mule and I got the hibiscus margarita. Both of the drinks were very strong and you couldn't really taste the pineapple or hibiscus flavor, I asked the server for more of the hibiscus and pineapple syrups on the side, after we mixed them in the drinks were perfect. The dinner menu is a 3 course prix fixe menu. We had the toasted bread first, which was actually burnt making it very difficult to eat and enjoy. Then we had the salad which I really enjoyed, it was fresh and crisp. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium, and while it was tender, it could've used more seasoning. The fries were the best thing on the plate, they were perfectly thin and crispy. I came here with my sister because we wanted steak and what better place to get steak than somewhere that specializes in it. The first to come out was vread and butter but the bread was very hard and seemed stale and the butter had a really weird taste to it, kind of like tap water. The next to come out was a salad and I am not a big fan of salad and this salad was not that great. The dressing didnt shine through and it just tasted like I was chewing on grass. I came here with high expectations of the steak but I can confidently say that my expectations were not met in the slightest. Our first plates that came out were not good at all. The steak was terrible. It was super thin and when I chewed it the steak turned into like a sand texture. We called the server over and told her about it and she apologized and gave us a refire of our steaks right away. The second one to come out was better than the first but still not great, especially for someplace that specializes in steak. I asked what cut of steak they use and they use coulotte steak. Its not a bad choice but they didnt prepare it well. The fires were just fries, nothing special. They did come out with a second serving of steak and fries which was nice and very appreciated. The service was great though. Our server was quick to help us and very attentive to us. The manager came and apologized to us as well for the steaks not being to our liking. Summary: Tasty food, bad ambiance, confusing experience. Would give 2.5 if half stars were an option. It was hard to hear anything so we were confused most of the meal about what we had been offered/what was happening, but the food was good. Tried to give feed-back on our way out and felt brushed off by the front desk which also didn't help, details below- Ambience: clean and bright, but as the space is basically one large open room, with an open bar area in the middle, the acoustics are rough. 80s hits were blasting the entire meal; not complaining about this personal taste wise, but was a little confusing to have Flock of Seagulls turned up so loud that we were kind of shouting to each other across our small table. Could barely hear waiters/waitresses when they would stop by. The main concern with the ambience is the bathroom soundtrack. Instead of music it's a "French Vocabulary" track. If you've been to La Madeline or remember Macaroni Grill back in the day, it's not unusual to pipe in basic vocabulary in French (or Italian for MG) for common phrases for ambience- 'my name is,' 'hello how are you,' 'let's go to the park,' etc. Also they alternate between male and female speakers. The soundtrack was one male voice and felt Predatory. QUOTE: "I have a hot tub in my home." "Do you have a boyfriend?" "Where do you live?" "Can I have your number?" "You have beautiful hands." "I want to steal your heart." "You take my breath away." "My name is Gerard." "Do you mind if I stare at you a bit longer?" It's unnerving at the very least, as a woman, to hear a male voice trying to get you back to his house while you are just trying to use the bathroom. By the end of the meal each of the women in our group used the bathroom and each came back feeling uncomfortable. We tried to tell this to the man at the front desk and he did not seem to take it very seriously, offering that it was the owner's decision and all the locations have this, but that doesn't suddenly make it ok. If you insist on having a French vocabulary tape playing in the bathrooms why can't it be normal phrases and not sound like a human trafficker? Menu: The idea of a pre-set menu with nothing to choose between (unless it's vegetarian instead of steak) sounds simple. We were asked if it was our first time and said yes, but no explanation was given, so I'm not sure what the point of the question was. We didn't know they give you two servings of the steak and fries. There was one basket of bread (for the table), one plate of salad (per person), and two servings of the entree plate (per person) which was a surprise. It makes the meal feel like a better value at about $32 per person. Drinks are separate. We couldn't understand the "mushroom side" offered to us as it was unclear if it was a part of the meal or not, so that was a $11 surprise because only 1 of the 4 of us said 'yes' to trying it. If you are in the mood for steak frites, this should scratch that itch for you with the double serving! Parking/location: Medium Rare Columbia is located in new Merriweather District shopping center. Bad luck for us tonight as police were not doing traffic control and concert go-ers took the entirety of the surface parking (of which there are at least 4 lots) by the restaurants, including parking in the lanes (not spots) in the lots blocking traffic flow. There was a bit of inconsistency between the first serving of meat and the brown gravy went really well with the fries but felt too much on the meat. We also had the mushroom side order with red pepper sauce and on my second serving of meat found myself slathering my steak on the roasted red pepper sauce for the mushroom. The service was really nice. I feel bad to say this but it kinda felt like the Raising Cane of sliced steak... The overall rating of this restaurant is fair, for a prix fixe (a set menu for a fixed price), meal, this works adequately if you temper your expectations. For $32, you get some bread (very tasty), a side salad (no onions, but otherwise pretty good), and a very thin piece of steak with some sauce on it, along with some fries. Peter Luger, it is not (but what is?) The steak is nice, and the sauce that it comes on certainly has some good flavor. It also helps that you get a second helping of both fries and steak at no additional cost. That is something Peter Luger would never do! You can also get some drinks (that helps a lot), and a portobello mushroom sliced up in a spicy red sauce. The mushroom was tasty and the sauce has a little kick and works well, but nothing to write home about. The theme is cute in that it tries for a modern French approach. When you go into the bathroom there is somebody trying to teach you French pickup lines as you are freshening up. Um, interesting take, I suppose. The owner's concept is simple and thoughtful.... rather than serving one big dish and letting the food get cold, you get a second helping of the food. We had to box ours to bring it home. We had a small hiccup with the salad .... it didn't look fresh but once we said something, the issue was taken care of and we got fresh salad. Although we did not try, desserts are available. The lights are dimmed making it for a quiet pleasant experience. The service was good, with frequent water refills, and check-ins. We knew a second helping of coulotte steak, and fries was included, so we didn't wolf down the first rasher of fries. The Boss had medium rare and I had medium. Both were perfect. We asked for the special sauce on the side, and were glad of it. Notes of Worcestershire, butter, and spices, but would not have wanted all over the steak. The second helping was as good as the first. Kind of an austere set-up, but that was fine. The bread is decent, not like the best bread that I've had, but good enough. The salad was good, but it's a salad. The steak and fries; the steak was honestly just okay. I got my sauce on the side, like a creamy mushroom ~ish based sauce, not bad but like nothing to write home about. The steak was more tender than the Medium Rare location in DC, but still a bit more tough than I'd like. You have to cut it up a bit more to make it tender and manageable, don't try to eat up the slice all at once because it's not as tender and it could be. The fries are good, but they're fries. The only saving grace is that you get double portions!! So for $34, two servings of steak and fries! Which honestly isn't too bad. It's just too bad that the steak quality wasn't as tender and good as I'd like. Overall, service was good because we're the only one there at opening, but not too bad! We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived, but sat towards the back- it would've been nice to be near a window but understandably we didn't make any request for that. He gave some incorrect answers regarding the menu, and he also missed a few requests and brought the wrong drinks out a couple times. One time, he brought bloody Mary's + a virgin Bloody Mary that were pretty sure had some alcohol in it (even though the brunch drinks were very weak). The garnish also only came on half the drinks "because they ran out". I got the famous French toast- indeed thick and mouthwatering- but the inside was a little too mushy for me. On the other hand, everyone seemed to enjoy their plates. It's worth it to get the steak and eggs considering it's the same dish as steak frites with an egg. Just was confused as to why our server would give us water we would have to pay for when we were already getting drinks. Just felt like a waste of money since we barely touched it. It includes bottomless brunch cocktails (mimosa, screwdriver or bloody mary) and beverages (coffee, soda, oj). You also choose a starter of yogurt parfait, dried fruit & granola, fruit salad, or mixed salad. There are five brunch entrees on the menu and we had the steak and eggs and the french toast. The french toast comes with chorizo sausage. I really enjoyed the french toast and the sausage was delicious. I thought the mimosas were good too. Don't believe the reviews! Medium Rare cancelled my OpenTable reservation while we were eating so I couldn't give a review. It was so LOUD the hostess and server couldn't hear us give our name or order. I've been to Manhattan restaurants that have more room between tables. The server tried to add a side to our orders without telling us it cost extra, and our drinks were watered down. The food was fine and they bring more but if I want a good steak I'll go to Cured or Seasons52. Too loud! read more

We ate outdoors, which lead to an amazing ambiance. Everything was clean and not too loud. During restaurant week, they allowed us to swap out the desert for a second cocktail. Steak was incredibly moist, flavorful, and sauce was great. Fries were cooked crisp on outside, and soft on inside. Salad was well dressed, but not too much. Our meals looked exactly the same - except mine had eggs and his did not. This is me encouraging you to get the steak & eggs because it's the same price with more food. One thing that was kind of a surprise to use is that they do not offer the signature double portion with the steak frites during brunch. Any other time they give you more steak frites (at no cost) with your entree. But at brunch they do not. I also found the mimosas to be weak.
