They provided top-tier medical care for our girl, but what I appreciated most was how they handled my wife and me. We were in a total state of panic, and they stayed calm, kept us informed, and treated us with so much empathy. It's rare to find a team that can balance high-level emergency medicine with such genuine bedside manner. Our Coconut once more ripped her nail almost completely off. She and Buddy who lives on the other side of the fence are always running back and forth and peeking at one another, oh yes running and barking as well. So Saturday she did it again, got her one nail caught in the slats of the fence. The good, great doctors were able to cut it off as far in as they could go. The nail is split inside but will grow out. On Monday she would not put her paw down and I couldn't touch it. It was all wrapped up good but I was fearful of taking the bandage off soooooo back to our friendly VEG ER for pets again. The doctor took the wrap off and said it looks great and healing but just like humans, the second day it hurts the worst. He was so reassessing, just keep up the medication and wear the "cone".... Today, day 5 and she is walking , even trying to run on it and just about finished with the medicine. Sleeps well, and just about to be my tom-boy, girl puppy again. My sweet 2 year old cat, Chip, required a 48 hour stay, which was very emotionally tolling (and extremely expensive - get pet insurance BEFORE your pet gets sick! Heed my warning!!), but the staff here are simply incredible. They were patient, kind, informative, and very supportive. They let me visit him whenever I wanted, they helped me understand his condition, and I really appreciate the level of care they offered during such a stressful time. Please stop telling people you treat birds/chickens. It's false advertising. All you did was charge me over $1,000 while my sweet baby boy Skater suffered and passed away after receiving no meaningful care. I don't care what the emergency is- don't bother wasting precious time in an emergency situation with this place. Instead put those efforts and time into showing your bird love at home for a loving and peaceful death or to trying other things at home to save his life. I went in - there was no line or wait since it was early... maybe one or two other pets were in the back... I knew how much it would be to go to this place but I thought it was worth it for my boy. We got in there and the nurse said I'll be honest I don't think he's going to make it. I said I know but I want to try. I specifically said he desperately needs fluids and antibiotics asap please it's his only chance... I had antibiotics at home but he wasn't eating so he needed an injection which is the only reason we went in. I told her that's all we wanted was antibiotic injection and fluids in order to avoid unnecessary wasted time and charges. She then told me they'd put him in the oxygen box while they figured out when was a good time to give him fluids because they were afraid to try in that moment due to his state. They didn't even try to give antibiotics as I requested urgently. They made us wait HOURS (they made us wait AFTER admitted to prioritize all of the dogs and cats that came in AFTER us). At one point they came to try to figure out what to do and then said they would be back, that a dog or cat just came in critical condition... but mine was there first and also critical! But to this place chicken lives don't matter. They kept it up and kept saying they had to research how to do this or that. The vet said he had to look up which antibiotics he can give to chickens when I insisted I needed them to give him antibiotics asap. Then the vet just comes back mentioning they had to run bloodwork and this and that and had us sign a financial thing approving all of these things he didn't need. Unless you're trying to figure out what bacteria or parasite he has bloodwork at that state was pointless. We already know he's critical. They didn't check what he had. It's like they were just trying to bill us as much as they could and waste as much time as possible all while having him in a box where I couldn't hold him and show him love. After some hours, he was drowning in his fluids in the box and I kept telling them but they didnt care or just kept telling me to put him back. Eventually the vet was like what's best is euthanasia and at that point bc they waited so long not doing what I asked while he just got worse and worse, I said ok because he was just drowning in fluids and I knew it was too late (many hours later). This was clear negligence: no real avian expertise, complete failure to administer the urgent antibiotics and timely fluids I specifically requested, dangerous delays, unnecessary tests, and overall indifference that led to his rapid decline and death. The vet didn't even know basic bird bloodwork values. I knew more than the vet did about chickens. Had they given him antibiotics and fluids as I asked from the start, he would have likely made it--just like my other rooster who developed the exact same symptoms a few weeks later, was just as bad, and fully recovered at home with amoxicillin and toltrazuril. Im still paying off this $1,000+ bill that I've been wanting to fight but haven't been able to because when I remember this day I cry. This place is unethical. This likely won't end here- just trying to find the strength to do something about it. We drove an hour to you just to watch my baby decline without proper care. I don't think anyone cared about him there... The vet sure didn't. He was drowning many times and no one cared or noticed but me... thank God I grabbed him in the end right before his heart attack although sadly might have been too late for him to even notice. His death haunts me daily. How he was treated haunts me. He was the sweetest most loving little rescue boy that loved me more than anything... while he was very sick he dragged himself across the kitchen and living room floor to try to be close to me when I walked away for a few moments doing some chores. No one seems to understand how incredibly emotional and loving these roosters are.

There were times in the last two years when I thought I was close to having to make the decision no one wants to make, but Dr. Hoh and her team never gave up on Benny. I greatly appreciate the time Dr. Hoh has put into researching Benny's case (she has probably even done it after hours!) and her detailed follow-up calls with me. I also appreciate how Courtney and Jamie never think it's a big deal that Benny is very vocal with them in the room (haha), and how they don't think I'm too nuts with all of my emails, calls, and questions. They all love on Benny, and it means the absolute world to me. They're angels, and Benny and I are so lucky to have all of you on our side. Grateful just doesn't even seem like enough. Thank you all so much for everything you do for Benny. I cannot recommend Heart of Texas (and getting your dog a specialist) enough. This emergency hospital is closest to home so that's why we've tried it 3 times. That ended today though, we won't be back. I understand that for an emergency animal hospital acute issues are seen first. However, this location feels like the wait is forever when there's less than satisfactory communication from those working, especially from the front desk staff. Most people's pets are like family and when you have to bring them in for any type of emergency it's highly stressful for both owners and pet. I've made 3 visits here and had to wait for 30 minutes or more without being notified why and that is not okay. Feeling as if you've been forgotten while your pet is stressed, hurt or in pain is unacceptable. Sometimes all it takes is a check in to let people know they're still being attended to while waiting, and not forgotten. Today we arrived not knowing for sure if what my dog had vomited was blood or not (because we aren't trained professionals). We called before arriving to let them know we were on our way. There weren't any other pets waiting in the lobby when we arrived. The receptionist kindly checked us in, and it was quick because we had been there before. She brought paperwork over for us to verify info and sign. The first thing that I noticed is the age of my dog was wrong. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the prior two times that we had gone there, I brought it to their attention that the age of my dog was wrong. So that means they still hadn't fixed it since the last time we were there. A dog's age and weight are very important when it comes to administering any type of care. I let the receptionist know and she said she would fix. That was the last communication we had as we waited in the lobby for almost 40 minutes. People came out of the back with their animals. Other people arrived with their pets. Finally, because my dog was becoming very anxious, I decided to look up other emergency hospitals to see where else I could take her. I found one and we let the receptionist know we were leaving. They simply said okay, no questions asked and we walked out the door. They admitted my 4-year-old dachshund overnight. I've been through overnight emergency stays at other clinics before, and this was the first time I truly felt at ease and confident that they had everything under control. Yes, it's expensive, but that's true of emergency veterinary care anywhere. Thankfully, I had pet insurance, which made the process much easier. They worked directly with my insurance carrier to make sure my benefits were applied correctly and only charged me for what wasn't covered.
