I recently bought my first gun. I used the range at Mega Sports a few times. I don't have any complaints about the range. I've been there on weekdays when the range was quite and weekends when it's busy. You may have to wait on a weekend day but I've never had a really long wait. I bring my own eye, ear protection, and ammunition otherwise it gets pricey. I haven't bought a gun at mega sports but I've bought cleaning supplies, parts, and ammo. I've never had a grumpy sales guy. If I ever do I'll change my review. Prices here seem good on most things but you can definitely drop some fast money there. Great place, prices are definately a bit on the high side. I've had great experiences with customer service here. The people behind the counter treat you right and go out of their way to help you. I haven't had anyone preach to me on their political stance, but I've only been in the store about a half dozen times. I did ask if I bought a pistol from there if they would throw in some free range time or ammo, but unfortunately they wouldn't. I ended up buying my pistol online and shipping it to my FFL, saving about $100. I visited the indoor pistol range and it is quite expensive, it was $26 a person and $1 a target (have to use their targets). They do offer a pro-rated rate of I think $18 for the range fee if you purchase their ammo. If you rent a gun from them you have to use their ammo. For $26 you do get unlimited time which is nice and I was able to sweep my .45 brass up. They have a sign up to not use steel cased ammunition. Most likely because they make more money selling brass ammunition and also scrapping brass or sorting it for reloading takes extra time. I'd have to say the indoor range is nice, well lit and well ventilated. Decently clean, big garbage cans for targets/trash, small cans for brass. read more

Pros: Best Gun range in Chicago, largest selection, decent staff Cons: Proximity to city Mega Sports by far one of the largest selection of handguns/rifles/shotguns of any Chicagoland gun shop. Huge facility with a seemingly endless amount of firearms on display. The range is very nice with carpeted floors, well lit, nicely painted, great ventilation, and electric pulley system. Range is a bit expensive (about $26) but it is an all day pass. You do get a discount if you purchase ammo with them. Nice selection of rentals priced from $10-12 to rent. Staff at the very least will acknowledge you and ask you if you need help (not at like Cabelas or BPS where they ignore you 75% of the time). Prices for firearms are typical of BPS/Cabelas but like mentioned before the selection is far greater. Terrific selection of accessories too. read more

Talked to a gentleman on the phone about buying a safe for my business. drove all the way to Plainfield only to find out they would not let me in without a Foid card. Now I'm supposed to drive back home get my Foid card And come back just to purchase a $3000 safe? Since when do you need a Foid card to purchase a safe? If I could give this place -5 stars I would. Pros - Ridiculously large selection of firearms, ammunition and accessories for you to see/touch/fondle - Safe, clean range. - Wide variety of firearms for rental (must use their ammo) - I've never seen any attitude or holier-than-thou behavior - Staff willing to answer questions Cons - If using the range, they require you use their targets. Not a big issue for me as they are $0.75 - Some may argue about prices being on the high side. Keep in mind that stocking all the stuff mentioned above is not cheap. You could save $50 buying a firearm online and having it shipped to your FFL. I am honest and say that I've purchased most of my firearms online. However, if we want nice places like this around we'll have to do our part. Notes This was my fourth visit (Apr 2011). When renting, I usually know what I want and just ask for it. This time I informed a gentleman named Kevin that I was interested in renting a revolver as I've never tried one. He asked me what I wanted an I informed him I had no idea what to try. He looked at my hands and suggested staying away from small revolvers as I had big hands. He suggested a S&W 686 or something similar in size. His advice was dead on. I really enjoyed shooting that gun and am considering purchasing one. I got zero attitude and no brand bias (which I hate). He even cracked a few witty comments. I talked to John in the sales counter and he helped me compare a M&P9 and and SR9. HE answered all my questions and never pushed one or the other. I'll be back soon to purchase that M&P9. read more

Had a great experience working with Colin. He took his time with us and was very informative. Store rules are overly strict, but Colin made purchasing a pleasure! They are lucky to have him working there. Eric was also very nice at check out. This place has zero interest in your money unless you meet a very specific criteria and if you've been shooting since you were 4. The younger clerk I dealt with was a meathead and was either incapable or refused to provide help, information, or opinions on their products. My two questions only managed to elicit glazed over eyes and slow yes/no head shaking. In my opinion, if you don't care to show that you know anything about the products your store carries, if you have no interest in being helpful or informative, if you have no interest in making a sale (or future sales) happen, then you're better suited as a wal-mart greeter. Also, if you're newer to firearms and were thinking about going here, don't. Even if you did your homework in researching things for yourself. Informed and uninformed questions are all met with smug arrogance, disinterest, and irritation. You'll walk in, be impressed by the large space/selection, and then you'll deal with their customer service and prices, and you might make your purchase, and it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth. read more

My experience here at mega sports is very similar to everyone else. But my biggest beef is prices. I shop around a lot and they have the highest prices I've seen anywhere. It's like they ignore the fact there's an internet and other places to shop. The biggest draw this place has is selection. I just go to check out in person what I'm planning to get then find the deal elsewhere. If they want my business then adjust your prices. It's very frustrating cause I see it as a snub to all of us in the firearms community. GATS has a slightly smaller selection but prices are appropriate and customer service is exceptional. But I love my small and local "mom and pop" place in Lombard called North American Firearms. Ask for owners Jeff and Bernadette. They're the best. read more

Having never so much as seen a real, live firearm before, I was a complete novice when I walked in to Mega Sports with my friend. Thankfully, between his skillful guidance (and a lot of beginner's luck), I didn't fire the gun with the handle pointed at the target! Jesting at my expense aside, Mega Sports has every possible pistol, rifle and shotgun you can imagine -- and then some! The selection is truly remarkable. And the salesmen know every detail about every item they sell. When it was time to saddle up and try the range, the cashier took the time to review safety guidelines for me. He asked what weapon we'd be firing, and by name alone he instantly knew how the gun operates, taking the time to instruct me on where the safety was and how the gun reloads. I wouldn't be surprised if he had the blueprints of every firearm ever made on the inside of his eyelids. Range rental is a little pricey, although they do give you a discount if you purchase a certain amount of ammunition. There's an extensive selection of firearms for rental, and I can't wait to come back and try my newfound hobby again! read more

I've bought three guns from Mega Sports. The store is clean with a huge selection. They have gun models that are sold out elsewhere and 9mm Ammo that is very hard to find these days. The guns I've purchased from Mega Sports were priced at the MSRP price. I'm willing not to pay discount prices in order to shop is such a nice facility with knowledgable sales people. The range is very clean and well lighted/ventilated. They discount the range fee if you buy ammo. As for reviews about their rudeness - they are a GUN STORE. They need to be very cautious in everything they do. I suspect that people are offended when they are not allowed something at the store because of a policy. I don't see the policies as unfair as everyone has to abide by the policies. I haven't seen any of the employees being rude to customers. However, I noticed a customer being rude to an employee. The customer didn't like that they refused to sell a firearm using his companion's credit card. I can understand this is a policy for it would be a red flag for a straw purchase. I like that they require a FOID card to get in the store. It means that gawkers or protesters don't prevent serious customers from shopping. If you don't have a FOID card, they will happily help you obtain one. read more

Several years ago before they added on to the store the place was much better. I actually bought a couple of handguns and one for my wife. We would go shooting at the range quite frequently also. Went back for the first time just a couple of months ago and was asked for my FOID as I walked in the door, OK your store, then quizzed on what my purpose was for coming in by a rude woman. Began going here in 2004. I bought 4 firearms from them before I stopped because of the pompous and outright rude attitudes I started encountering. It appears other reviews on yelp feel the same way even to this day. Which leads me to write this review... Today, my girlfriend goes in to buy an HK P30L for herself. This isn't her first handgun and she has experience firing a variety of calibers (9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 Sig and .44 Mag, .223/5.56mm and 7.62mm). She has recently got into firearms/rifles and is all excited about them. Since I am not with her today, she is texting me on what are the differences between an HK P30 standard and P30L and differences between 9mm & .40 S&W. As I am answering her back via text messages, one of the 'sales' persons tells her that the .40 S&W is too much for her. Good way to 'assume' and judge a woman. She begins asking them questions about the above said firearm and in the meantime is asking me questions as well. They eventually come back to her and tell her they are not going to sell it to her because they think it's a 'straw sell'...??? She's been going back and forth too much on her cell phone and tell her they don't allow cell phones in the store. So, it appears that this same 'pompous and outright rude' attitude(s) haven't changed much since 14 years ago when I encountered it. Nowadays, there are so many other gun stores around the Chicago-land area. My advice is to bring your business elsewhere other than this place. read more

Worst customer service ever. Had a negative experience years ago and decided to go back for a second chance to just see if it was an isolated incident. Showed my foid card as was requested and am now aware it's their store policy. Was let in and within 1 minute I reach for my phone to text my wife to contact me when she arrives and immediately get yelled at there is no cell phone usage allowed in store. Why? I wasn't in line, I wasn't talking on it and I wasn't taking pictures. I felt like I was being profiled and every move being scrutinized. Went to buy a gun & Ammo here and my license was expired so they wouldn't let me buy a gun but let me buy ammo even though my FOID card was valid . ALL EXPIRED LICENSES ARE VALID UNTIL FEB 2021 DUE TO COVID!! Sales person was very rude and arrogant! Would not listen that license was still valid due to Covid. read more

This place was great before. But now it's insane. Can't use your cell phone at all with out getting yelled at, that's great for working on call. The lines are insane. Why don't you offer appointments?? You have to wait in line to look at a firearm and then after the 3 day wait you have to wait in line again just to pick it up?? Also waited in line just for them to say they won't take a foid that's expired even with the paperwork. Got a letter from ISP saying it's good for 18 months from expiration date. When I called and asked about that they said it was good and hung up when I asked why they didn't take it. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! Save yourself the hassle. Huge selection of firearms with anything from hand guns, shotguns, bolt action, and military style semi auto rifles. Plus they carry many safes and hunting gear. Also I might add is that they stock a ridiculous amount of ammo. The store is almost the size of a best buy. On my first visit I wasn't greeted at all, granted they were busy. However, having worked in retail before a simple hello be right with you is not much to expect. Waited for over 45 minutes without any acknowledgement. I then left. The 2nd time I came back was because no other gun store by me had 556 NATO in stock. These people did. I walked in and it took minute to get some help. When I asked for the 556 ammo they kid said they didn't have any. I told him he to make sure because I just called to verify. After getting another employee to help I bought my ammo and left. Pros: huge selection of guns and ammo plus they have almost everything you need in stock. Cons: bad to mediocre customer service. Not all employees are knowledgeable. I would only come here if no store by me had what I wanted in stock and I didn't want to wait. UPDATE++++ 7/27/12 I visited this place again earlier in the morning and noticed a different vibe. I must of be asked if I needed help at least 3-5 times... which is a great thing. I was also greeted at the door and asked if I needed help. Not they type of customer service I received the last 2 times I visted. I came to the conclusion that going there earlier on a weekday when it is not as busy really helps. Don't bother coming here if anyone in your party doesn't have a FOID, they won't let anyone enter they store without one. Also, don't bother coming here if you live in Cook County or Chicago. Unwritten and UNPOSTED store policy is no sale of tactical shotguns if you live in Chicago and no sale of AR style rifles if you live in Cook County. The only reason it's not a 1/5 is because they have a large inventory so it's a good place to gets hand-on time before buying. I'd still order online and use an FFL to transfer/do paperwork. Many years ago I was there with my dad. My dad and I wanted to enjoy plinking on my grandpas farm with my grandpa, so my dad was looking for a target pistol or rifle. My dad settled on a .22 pistol after my dad look at the options and I of course gave my input as well. My dad made the decision to buy it and then the salesman said it was a straw purchase and he would need to report it and couldn't sell my dad the pistol because his ~19 y/o son (I forget my exact age at the time) had intentions on using the pistol. I had a FOID of course but you have to be 21 to buy a pistol from an FFL, but regardless, the pistol was for my dad, but of course intentions to let his son shoot it when the family was together. We quickly called over a manager who calmed the grossly uniformed salesperson down and sold my dad the pistol. There are literally guns of varying calibers made specifically for children in color and design sold there to parents. I can imagine this place calling it a straw purchase when a dad is buying a child's size pink/blue .22 rifle for his 12 year old son/daughter. To this day that plinking pistol has been enjoyed by many friends and family always with the supervision/good company of my dad, the owner and person the pistol has always been possessed by. It would have been a shame if the salesperson followed through with his plan to report a USAF Colonel as a straw purchaser when buying a gun for father and son to enjoy together. I have been shopping here for years. The staff has always been very helpful and has made good recommendations. You could virtually eat off the floor in the range. It is well lit and well ventilated. I have not experience the foid card at the door rule but have not been in for a while. I hope they fix this silly rule ASAP. This business deleted my yelp review somehow. So here it is again: 5Apr2013 I contacted Mega Sports inquiring about an ammunition purchase. They had the ammo that my fiance wanted to purchase for her pistol and AR-15. They did not say on the phone that it was their store policy to not allow anyone in without a FOID card even if they are a non-resident. My fiance and I are both United States Marines with valid Military IDs, she is an Illinois resident with a valid FOID card. Non-residents are not required to have a FOID card. She was recently injured in a line of duty accident. She broke her Tibia, Fibula, and heel requiring corrective surgery. She requested that I drive her to Mega Sports due to the fact that her right leg is broken. She could not drive to purchase ammo to legally shoot at a range we have frequented with no problems. Once we arrive at Mega Sports, we are stopped by a Man wearing a hat with a USMC pin on it who tells us he needs to see our FOID cards. My finance presents hers and I explain that I am not an Illinois Resident and per the Illinois State Police ( the issuing body of the FOID card) I am not required to have one. I offer him my valid DL and Military ID, he tells me he won't accept either form of identification and I have to sit at the front of the store while my injured fiance has to wonder around alone looking for the ammo. She returns to the front of the store with the ammo and attempts to purchase it. The gentleman then told her that she would not be allowed to purchase ammo because it was obvious she was only buying it for me and she had never handled a weapon before. She explains this is not the case and even if it were I am a NON RESIDENT and not required to have a FOID card he tells her that she doesn't look like she's ever handled a fire arm in her life and that she needs to leave. My fiance is not only a 12 year veteran of the Marine Corps but she is also a 3 time award expert shooter with the M16 and M9 Beretta. She is a Veteran of the Afghan war who served as the Squad Leader for a Female Engagement Team in Helmand Province Afghanistan with 2nd Bn 1st Marines in direct support of combat operations. Her picture is in the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia for actions while serving her country in combat during a time of war. Obviously it's frustrating having contacted the police when moving here to make sure we were obeying these laws to see a Licensed Gun Dealer not know them. Being treated with such unprofessionalism, sexism, and disrespect is intolerable. After we left the store my fiance explained the conversation she had with the man behind the counter and I got very upset. I called the store and requested to speak to a manager. I began to explain the situation to him he said he had briefly been told about what had happened. I went into further detail where he accused me of changing my story several times stating that it is the law that everyone has to have a FOID card. This is not accurate. This is what the Illinois State Police website FAQ's say about who is required to have a FOID card: Unless specifically exempted by statute, any Illinois resident who acquires or possesses firearm or firearm ammunition within the State must have in their possession a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card issued in his or her name. NON-RESIDENTS are not required to have a FOID card. New Illinois residents have sixty calendar days after obtaining an Illinois driver's license or Illinois Identification Card to obtain a FOID card. How does a business claim that to be a cornerstone when they are not knowledgeable, and blatantly sexist towards one of the nation's female, law-abiding, (FOID CARD HOLDING) military heroes? In Illinois is it worthwhile to even go through the process of obtaining a FOID Card, if a store can deny you the ability to purchase ammo for any reason they deem suitable? Is it right or just for a business associate, in any trade to speak to a customer that is following the rules and regulations with such disdain? Is that a good business to associate yourself with and is that a good way to treat our Veterans with FOID cards? A better explanation of store policy should be outlined to the citizens of the Plainfield area. My fiance has been attached to all male infantry units since 2005, and went on to explain that she has never been treated with such disrespect and sexism. She never imagined that a gun store, in America's heartland would insult her experience and further infringe on her 2nd Amendment rights. She has supported your local community through Toys for Tots, Veterans Funeral Honors, Honor Flight Coordination, etc. She is attached to a special forces unit locally in Joliet, IL. I think the Sandy Hook fear n' buy gear situation caught a lot of retailers off guard. I did not like the pubic attitude with the FOID card thing either as noted, but its all about 20-20 hindsight and hopefully they learned a customer service lesson as did many across the USA. This exception situation aside, this is a really good store, and the range is far better than nearly 90% that are in Illinois. Ask about price matching if its realistic as they are good people. I have been a client for over 10 years. Some staff are 'lacking' but those are some of the new guys and time is what is needed to have them cut their teeth to see if they are more serious about their job in the world of firearms. The key with anyone buying a firearm is to ask and if you feel you are not getting the info you need, ask for a manager. Went to go buy a Taurus judge that they did have in stock waited almost 2 hours outside before I could even get in there. then they didn't even have the model that I had called and asked if they had. The staff does not seem very polite does not seem like they really care about customers. The price that they had on the gun was about $100 more than anywhere else had it for retail. I knew the owner when he had a small shop down the street. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CUSTOMER over the years and was always greeted by the owner on a first name basis. Fast forward to November 2019, My buddy and I bought two large display cabinets and hired a moving company to move them. We told the owner we had plans to donate them to a Christian School for trophy cases. The Owner made sure insurance was in place prior to moving them. Everything was set up to move them and it turned out that the cases wouldn't fit through the door in whole so moving company asked to take them apart. We were told they would not be allowed to do so. Owner demanded we take them out whole or get out of the store. We got our money back and left. SO MUCH FOR LOYALTY AND SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN THE STORE THE PAST 20 years. on Wednesday of this week, as a 61-year-old gun enthusiast I walked into Mega Sports to make a weapons purchase. -Current FOID Card with current address. -Current Concealed Carry License with current address. -Current Illinois Drivers License with previous address. (Updated Online) After what seem like much confusion on staffs behalf, informed that I could not make the purchase. seeking clarification from staff, I was informed I would either need the state paperwork showing change of address or go get a new drivers license. Asked to have the weapon put on hold under my name so I may return home to retrieve my change of address paperwork from the state website. Upon returning to the store the following day, again after much confusion on the staff behalf was now informed I would need to bring in a bill or documentation from the state of Illinois to my current address. Again I seek clarification and this is when the two counter help staff became unprofessional, rude and disrespectful With your organization losing the loss of revenue and me leaving your facility and going to a competitor to make my purchase Within 60 minutes of leaving your facility. This experience left me Disappointment in your facilities customer service, since I have used the gun range, taking classes and purchased ammunition over the last three years.
