Yes, prices are on the higher side, but the quality customer service helps make up for that. Like the old adage says, "You get what you pay for." The guys here actually give a damn about you as a customer and what you need before selling you anything. If you don't need the most expensive gun in the store, they will tell you tell that. I have been to Freddie Bears a couple of times, all with similar results. Everything is priced extremely high, the store itself is very very dark, and no one seems to want your business. 11/13/13 I went in with my friend looking for .22 ammunition. There were three employees that I could tell worked there (sitting behind the counter, stocking, etc.) and a couple other people that could have been customers, might have been employees, I'm not sure. The first strike is the lighting. The store is exceptionally dark. There are very few lights, and they are only in certain areas. It makes lables hard to see, and the floorspace is quite crowded so darkness does not help navigating the area. Second strike is how we were greeted, or moreso, not greeted. We walked up to the counter to ask a question and stood there for nearly 10 minutes while two employees yelled back and forth to each other across our heads. No "Hi there, it'll be just a moment." or "Welcome to Freddie Bears" just completely ignoring us. It wasn't until we started walking away to look at something on a shelf that we were asked if we needed help. Final strike, We said we were interested in .22 ammo and we were given a dead-blank stare and a curt "$100 a box". That's nearly twice as much as it had been priced elsewhere. "Well, you could go to Cabela's and get it cheaper but they'll only sell you one box." There was no cordial tone to his voice, and very much an air of buy it or get out. I would much rather drive to Cabela's and only get one box at a more reasonable price, than support a store that can't even put on a veneer of wanting my business. read more

Fred has a Great Shop In the middle of a hometown street filled with restaurants Is Freddie Bear Sports.....This little store front is deceiving, Inside is a superb selection of Handguns,Rifles, Accessories as well as Bow-hunting gear. The folks behind the counter are top notch and demo and explain all the features of each weapon. When you spend $$$ for a handgun or $$$ for a rifle you want to know you are not rushed. So it may take a few minutes to get a one on one conversation. So once you are seen, you are taken care of well! No high pressure tactics I like the section and variety. The atmosphere is authentic and functional. No fancy displays for the newbie buyers to impress. The total experience was 100% positive! I bought my first Glock with Fred. Let me start buy saying as a consumer, it is my obligation to find the best price, and what is convenient for me, not to "support" YOUR business. I had done one transfer for another firearm about a month previous, and was told that what I had ordered was "cheap" and "shit". I decide to give this business another chance. I found a great price for a pistol online and had it shipped there for a transfer. The pistol arrived on a Thursday at 9:37am (had delivery confirmed from ups) and it took ME calling Freddie Bear Sports 5 days later to acknowledge that the pistol had arrived (which they say they will call when in). I blow it off. I tell them I will be down later that night. So I get off work, drive down to Tinley Park to find that they closed early for New Years Eve. Where was the heads up when I talked to an associate earlier that day !? I blow it off, again, and it takes me another 4 days to make it out there to do the paperwork because of work. No problem, still patient. When I arrive the following Friday to do the transfer paperwork, I get greeted by an employee, and that was fine. I stated I was in to do transfer paperwork. Here's where it gets good. Another patron (is a regular) starts talking shit about me, 5 feet away, and the associate chimes into this conversation supporting the argument that "I have some fucking nerve ordering online to have it shipped here." This continues for another few minutes. I was pretty appalled considering I was 5 feet away filling out my paperwork. I said nothing due to the fact that they still had my pistol. If you are that upset with having to do a transfer, DON'T OFFER THE SERVICE OF DOING TRANSFERS. $50 is above the industry standard for transfers. Consider being competitive, it will be better for business in volume vs a higher mark up. To the fellow Yelpers reading this, let me save you some time....Go elsewhere. The worst thing you could ever do to a business is never give them your business. I really wanted to like this place, and I gave it two chances. I buy a firearm about every 2-3 months, and could have had a great relationship with this business, but the business chose otherwise. read more

Fuck this place! My dad bought his guns here so after his passing I made it a point to call & see if they buy guns back. They told me over the phone that they do. They also told me over the phone that they could confirm his purchases & possible sales with me if I brought in his death certificate. So, I made arrangements to get a babysitter (because I didn't want my son around this gun) so I could pick up the gun & make the long trip out to Tinley to sell it back. Only I got there today & was told to come back Monday because only one person does the buying. Why was I not told that over the phone???? This is not a quick trip to 7-11. I don't want to have a gun in my car/house until Monday!! Then I ask the guy if I can get my dad's purchase & sale info & he tells me no because I don't know the models of the specific gun. I looked around for a while then went to the counter for help, the person behind the counter was having a chit chat with a friend on other side of counter which is not even gun/archery related while I stood there looking stupid. I guess because I interrupted their chit chat and maybe because I knew nothing about bows and I must've asked a stupid question. I can only speak from my experience here which was good. I stopped in on a Tuesday evening to look at there gun selection. I had read the reviews, and was fully prepared to walk out. I found that their gun selection was sufficient for my needs, in other words they had the gun I was looking for, and several comparable guns. The salesman Mike was helpful, and didn't talk down to me. The price was a little high, but all I did was ask them to work with me, and the price was dropped to the average. Bottom line on this place is they had a good selection, and it was close to home. read more

Bought a handgun that Fred had for sale on Gunbroker.com. Went to pick it up today. I think some of these reviews may be bogus. As in: "The store is exceptionally dark." Nonsense. The lighting is absolutely fine. And why would someone from Ohio be buying a gun at Freddie Bear's in the first place? I question the legitimacy of that review. I walked in there today, and was immediately greeted pleasantly, and professionally, and got a nice greeting from one or two other employees during my 20 minutes there, not to mention a great conversation with Fred himself. From what I saw, the store prices are above online stores like Bud's, but not out of line with other Chicago-land retail brick-and-mortar operations. Like many people seem to experience, I've gone into other gun stores and had the screaming "Am I ****ing invisible?" treatment, or snotty service after they acknowledge that you actually exist. No hint of that at Freddie Bear's, for me anyway. I had a good experience, hope you do, too. read more

Great place never had a problem with the staff. I usually know what I want and researched it before I go so I am usually in and out. I have witnessed their staff take their time and show patience explaining firearms to inexperienced customers, and that is the way it should be. They not only walked me through the pros and cons of the various models they had available (which they have a huge selection), but they explained which models would fit the best for my needs. But between the really high prices and complete disinterest in helping people who really want to buy things from them like me I just can't. So I drive 45 minutes away in the middle of nowhere to use a different range, buy equipment and deal with a store with pretty nice people and reasonable prices. Went into the store to purchase a gun and the salesperson seemed not interested in helping me at all. He was eating his dinner on the counter and joking around with a past customer. I was trying to ask him to see a few guns and he acted as though I was a bother for him. After a few more minutes of him not talking to me I just asked him about ammunition. To be specific I asked him about 22 Long rifle ammunitionin the box of 500 if they had any and how much it cost. After another couple minutes he decided to get up and walk me over and to show me a box of 500 thunderbolt ammunition and told me it was $100 I thought he was joking and I said back to him again are you joking he said no. This review is a week old. I submitted one immediately upon leaving but it somehow didnt get posted. I rarely write reviews but the customer service was so poor I couldnt let it go. Decided to shop locally for a few bow accessories. Shop had only two customers at the gun counter. I walk over to bow section and ask a disinterested employee for some help. I must have caught him on his way to his coffee cup and bs session. He gave me 30 seconds of his time and said that bow equipment is not his thing. So he walks away and doesnt ask anyone else to assist me. I find one item that I needed and gave up on the other. So now I'm standing there looking for an associate so I can pay. The guy selling a gun to the other 2 customers could care less that I'm standing in the middle of the store looking for help. The other guys are in the back talking about everything but work. Neither takes 10 steps to come over and help me. I return the item to the rack, go home and order from Amazon. Never again. Not sure how the place survives. read more

Terrible. They can fill the paperwork out correctly while eating little Debbie's powder donuts and causing a mess on the display glass (applause applause). I bought my glock 22 and on the same day I was gonna buy a glock 26, but the one worker told me not too because the ATF might look into it because I bought two guns in a day. Ok. Whatever, that's fine..I'll buy it when I go to pick up my glock 22. I go back..and they sold out. So..they talked me into buying it by saying they will get an order in by next week. Let's see...a month later..no courtesy call or anything. I finally called and asked when it was going to be in..he told me next week. I waited and waited. No call. I called AGAIN and he said he didn't know anything about it and he would call the distributor and see when they will get it. Waited two days..no call back (should of figured). Called AGAIN and talked to the little Debbie eater..I tried explaining how I was getting blown off..and he knew exactly who I was. I asked why I'm still waiting when you told me it would take a week. He told me I could get a refund. I called ray o'herrons and they had 5 in stock and even cheaper!!!! This place blows and they are pretty expensive. These workers don't care about you or anything. Recently obtained my FOID card and wanted to see about getting a handgun. Did a lot of research prior and visited all the big box stores (Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops). But I prefer to support small businesses. Despite the reviews I went into Freddie Bear Sports to see about purchasing a gun there OR getting a good price online and using them as the FFL dealer to have the firearm transferred there. Dan was the young man who helped me out and after a quick check of my FOID card was happy to show me half a dozen models he recommended or I was interested in. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and even gave me some great information about Glock and a way to get discounted firearms. Unfortunately, their transfer fees are $50 per gun (area average is $20-$30) and their gun prices are 5-30% higher than anywhere else. Can't justify paying that much over retail at other places. read more
