A lot of new gun laws and attempts to ban entire classes of firearms led to a big demand for certain semi-auto rifles, magazines and pistols in recent weeks. I drove nearly 40 miles to visit Megasports, after calling the store DOZENS of times during normal business hours, and receiving no answer or even recording.. the phone just rang endlessly. I went to Megasports web site to check that they were still in business, and everything was normal on their web site. Upon arrival after a LONG drive to the store, I walked to their entrance and was met at the door by a employee who told me that I could not even enter the store at all unless I possessed gift certificates issued by Megasports, or was picking up a gun I had already bought from them. The entire parking lot of the store was not even 20% full at this time.. I told him of my repeated unanswered calls to their store, and checking their web site which made no mention of any problems, or warning to potential customers not to come to their business. He could have cared less and told me to leave. The store appeared well stocked inside and it appears that they want to ca$h in on inflated prices by hoarding their stock given the bans and restrictions being talked about in the media. I will never visit or offer any sort of business to a store which CHOSE to close itself off to the general public with no warning or notice. I will never pay for using their range either.. I cannot think of any sort of establishment that deserves to be put out of business more that a retail store that thinks its sitting on gold that will inflate in value, so it simply closes itself off to the general public to wait and see... I hope Megasports gets to wait a LONG time, for customers to return.. In my case that will never happen.. Try Rinks instead.. they don't lock out their customers when it suits some strategy they have come up with. Given that they enacted a measure that basically slapped ALL their customers in the face, Megasports should simply end its retail business entirely and become a members-only range which is effectively the policy that the store enacted when these current threats to the rights of legal gun owners were being talked about. The owners and staff and Megasports abandoned their customer base when they thought could gain financially in the short term by doing so, and they deserve the same favor from legal firearms owners, shooters and enthusiasts, all of whom they chose to lock out of their store when they saw a opportunity. Even before the current situation, Megasports had a LOT of really bad reviews here, but almost every one is 'Flitered' out, while only a couple good or neutral reviews managed to be filtered, so I guess I know the fate of my review as well.. someone needs to document this situation so that its not forgotten. These are bad business people and dont deserve a penny of support from us when everything they sell is available from good shops or ranges. read more

I have been shopping here for years. The staff has always been very helpful and has made good recommendations. You could virtually eat off the floor in the range. It is well lit and well ventilated. I have not experience the foid card at the door rule but have not been in for a while. I hope they fix this silly rule ASAP. OK, first the good -clean -well-organized-good selection of weapons -some (only a few) very knowledgeable sales people, unhurried - range is in great shape with great ventilation I'm not one to complain about prices. They charge MSRP and I don't begrudge a company making a profit as long as service and surroundings are top notch. But these people are inconsistent Now the ugly - You have to stand like cattle in a line to talk to someone about a gun. So you browse and find something you're looking for then stand in line for half an hour waiting to speak to someone, sometimes longer - if you get one of he kids as a consultant they don't know squat about many weapons - they are "straw-purchase" crazy, and I do mean crazy. You cannot take or make a call or text while in the store. They have a person strolling around who demands you put away your phone, everywhere. So if you might be waiting for an important call do NOT go there. - as noted above, their hours are not what they say. It's kind of nice that you pick up your weapon after 5, no browsing, but not convenient if you work. On weekends, same deal, come early or don't bother, you'll be turned away Finally the real deal-breaker; I pick out and buy a piece, do the forms and dutifully wait until after work 3 days later. Schlep out there and again wait in line for them to get around to me (25 min). Go to the counter where a helpful guy shows me the weapon in detail. It was a semi auto with the action open he hands it to me. I grasp it and take a hold (aiming at the floor of course) and put my finger on the trigger. The guy nearly has a cow (remember, the action is open and the mag is out, no bullets withing yards). Wait, it gets better... I wait till he goes through his spiel and has me notice the child safety pamphlet (sure, and don't let them run with scissors either) . I casually ask if I can bring my wife to the range to shoot with me before she gets a FOID. He says no and then excuses himself. Back comes the manager who starts ripping me for being a "straw-purchaser" and insists that I will be refunded and leave. I try to reason with him and explain that I am being misunderstood, that I own many items and have for all my life, and it used to be that I could bring someone, I was just asking. He was having none of it and kept saying "we have zero-tolerance for straw-purchases". At all times a gentleman I try to reason with him that I was just asking about my wife and am surely no straw purchaser... but he's feeling powerful now and I quickly realize I'm dealing with a fool who is actually enjoying being rude and inappropriate! It is a massive power-trip for this clown. Guy must have a miserable life! Went to GAT and talked to Randy, a five-star good guy. none of this BS and the store is just what you want and expect. NEVER will go to MegaSports again. A pack of a$$-clowns with real contempt for everyone and a very bad attitude. I admit their range is nice (expensive, but nice). Went to the range with my adult, Marine son and had a great experience. Every gun shop is overwhelmed at this time. Mega Sports personel were organized, polite, and very professional. The store and range is clean and well lite. Yes. You have to show your FOID to get in the door. That may be a problem if you are considering becoming a gun owner, but these are crazy times in a gun shop! When we finished shooting, we were asked if we had a good time and encouraged to wash our hands. Other ranges treated me as if they were doing me a favor. Amazing costumer service! went looking for my first handgun, wasn't quite sure what i wanted. i went to their shooting range where i met Ryan, and their wide variety of rentable guns,($11 per gun, $17 range fee when u buy their ammo) Ryan, who couldn't have been more helpful, walked me through every gun i wanted to shoot and was very patient the entire time. 1 star is too much. This place treats women so poorly. In this day and age you would think that they would realize women want to protect themselves and also can purchase guns. Maybe you need to hire a few women or men that respect them. The person who helped me ERIK who is in training was not helpful. He was demeaning and rude. I don't know how an employee in training can deny a gun purchase or say a specific gun is not for me. The government issued me a FOID card and a conceal and carry card I think that proves I'm capable of owning a gun and have the RIGHT to own a gun. What some of these employees need to worry about is a discrimination lawsuit. To the owner open your eyes so many gun dealers are opening around you and customer service is important. These folks have an awesome selection of firearms, but they obviously do not value customer loyalty...I purchased a ruger SP101 from them several years ago...sent the firearm to manufacturer for service...and needed to have it returned to a firearms dealer. Mega Sports refused to accept it! They did not wish to hear anything from me, such as my history of purchases there (Rugers SP101 and GP100, Taurus Airlite 941, Kahr PM9, Remington Shotgun). My first and last time in this store. I went in with my son to purchase a weapon. First thing off, we are asked for our FOID cards at the door. No big deal, I thought ok that's over with. I had a gun to trade, the salesperson takes the gun and walks behind the counter with the gun. He returns in less than a minute and said they were not interested. Ok, let's look at your SA XD .40. Went to Megasports today to look for a few items. Be warned that when you first step in the door that if you do not have your FOID card you are not getting into this place of business. Luckily, I had my FOID and continued on shopping for the items that I was looking for in the store. After 30 minutes in the store in the early Tuesday afternoon I finally was asked if there was anything that I need help with. I informed the salesman of the items that I was looking for and it ended up not being much help at all. Instead the gentleman want on a rant how he uses a smaller handgun for self defense and what I have is too big for the intended use. After finally making the selection of what I was shopping for and went to the cash register to check out. The gentleman that checked me out never asked if I had found everything that I was looking for and never said thank you for shopping here. It was a very unwelcome feeling in this store and I would advise anyone looking to shop here to reconsider their store. read more

I have lived in the area for most of my life and since the age of 18 have frequented mega sports. I promise you will find better customer service just about anywhere else. They are nicer and less discriminative at the dmv, any dmv. My most recent venture to this establishment involved calling them to see if they take trade ins, after being informed that the specific make and model of two of my firearms would warrant trade value by an associate over the phone which ending in " bring them in so we can take a look at what you've got in total and you'll receive X amount of credit". I did just that, I took the morning of my day off, packed up all the original gear and packaging I still had with my firearms and drove to mega sports where the manager even after sharing my previous phone conversation ended my short lived trip with " we probably wouldn't be interested". Ok,I thought, incredibly unprofessional, he didn't even want me to bring them in, he didn't even want to consider what I would be trading in for. But whatever, not gonna ruin my day. Later I sold both for twice as much as they offered for trade( blessing in disguise right ) so now that I have the money for my old firearms I go back and try to negotiate a better price for the pistol I am looking to get. Same @$$ hole manager won't match the price( I was asking for about $525 out the door which was the exact quote I was given by a shop 40 minutes north of me. ) he wouldn't go any lower than $540. Whatever , right?, gonna cost as much in gas to go to the other place so I said fine let's do it. Hand the kid working there my license and foid card, now to be fair I recently moved and my current address on my license is my new address the foid still has my immediately previous address. ( it was updated with the state and I am currently just waiting for a new one to show up in the mail) the kid says store policy prevents sales to any foid card holder with a different address on a drivers license. I stated that as there are no federal state or local laws or statutes preventing the sale of a firearm based off this clerical discrepancy. He goes back to the same manager and comes back says to me " sorry it seems they are going to stick to their we don't want your business strategy". As I am leaving, for the first time in 20 years of dealing with mega sports, that same manager, who basically told me to go F myself three times in one day, actually smiled at me as I stared him down walking out cash in hand, he £#cking smiled. I am pretty damn sure I am his favorite customer because I've seen that man in that store at least 90% of the time I have entered that store and I can not remember him smiling at a single soul in the last 20 years. But he smiled at me. While this establishment is well stocked I promise it will be less hassle and a far more pleasant experience simply going ANYWHERE else for your firearms needs. In conclusion I left there and went and purchased my firearm from a very very nice dealer in Naperville up off Ogden ave. I also had significant help from a dealer out in yorkville, those two dealers are a bit of travel but I promise well worth it ( I did not place business names in this negative review on purpose. The only thumbs up I'll give would be the massive gun selection as their service was horrible. First me and my girlfriend went to the gun range and my girlfriend was all but discouraged to shoot my Ruger. Excuse me but I do believe you have to start somewhere. I suppose if we went to a back alley and practiced as opposed to the range it would be more acceptable. Then they wouldn't allow me to give my girlfriend the money to purchase a firearm. These guys first ignored me and then were totally condescending because I am a woman. If you are female or a novice, don't waste your time with this place. Even with their enormous selection, they had "no recommendations" for me about a gun even though I had checked out about a dozen weapons first with a helpful person at Bass Pro. I am only reviewing the customer service that I received during my visit. I am a small girl and most people would assume that I have no experience shooting, which is incorrect. After perusing their selection (and determining that there were four items that I wanted to look at), the person who helped us showed us ONE item and then pawned us off on the range person saying I should focus on shooting different models to determine what I wanted, all in under 2 minutes. After reading all the negative remarks about Mega Sports, I couldn't believe a store could stay in business operating as in these stories. Since I lived about 20 mi. away, I decided to visit there today, 9/9/13, and see for myself. When I walked into this mammoth building, no one asked me for my FOID card even though there were several employees working in the area. In fact, after about 30 minutes in the store a sales person asked me if I needed help and was very courteous. In the next 30 minutes at least three other employees asked if they could help and were very nice including a salesman at the handgun area who showed me several guns and was happy to continue but I had to go. If you can't find what you want at this place, you are not going to find it anywhere. I will say this, they have the most of everything a shooter may need and everything is displayed neatly. Based on my recent purchases at other retailers including Amazon, I don't think their prices are out of line. Using 22LR ammo as a guide, they had sufficient stock and were not out of line charging $5.99-$6.99 per box of 50. The range charge was $27.00 and if you purchase at least $10 of their ammo, the range price drops to $20 which is in line with other local indoor ranges. My judgement of the negatives and I understand there could be problems associated with any sale, is, maybe,some of these folks went in there with an attitude and things went wrong but I didn't see any reason to believe some of these posts and I'm not connected with or know anybody there but I think it is unfair to blast a company or person that does not deserve it. Anyone who gave a 4 or 5 must work there. I use this place for one purpose only. To look at a gun and then buy it online and use a FFL dealer. The same gun I wanted Mega wanted $1050 for it around $1150 after taxes. Found the same gun online. For $725 plus $20 shipping and $25 for the FFL transfer fee. I saved $380. I would say this is a no brainer. read more

I've now purchased two firearms from here, a handgun, and a rifle. I plan on buying at least two or three more. The only thing that costs this place that fifth star is the inconsistency. Sometimes I go in there and get help immediately, other times I stand around and wait without so much as a "hi, be right with you" from anyone. Sometimes even when it's not very busy. The other inconsistency is the staff. Some of the staff such as Rob, Josh, and especially Brian (imo) are SUPER knowledgeable, friendly and helpful while still being unbiased. I don't think I would buy another handgun with out at least hearing what Brian has to say about it first. I've never been treated with any rudeness here, but some of the staff just aren't nearly as knowledgeable. I had some very specific questions today and although the guy was as helpful as he COULD be, he wasn't very helpful because he just didn't have the answers. Josh spared a minute for me but was busy with another customer and had to get back to them, so was anyone else that could help for that matter. I eventually found Brian, who had a spare minute or two, and ran my last questions by him before settling on a gun and making a purchase. So don't just make a snap decision on this place because you had one bad experience when they were super busy, like I originally did. This place's selection just can not be beat. Range prices are up there, but purchase prices are honestly very reasonable, and they have a HUGE rental section. Although if you're going for the range don't bother bringing your own targets or ammo. They make you buy their targets, and you might as well get the discounted range pass by buying their ammo. I plan to make most of my future purchases here, but if the weather is right, I will head elsewhere for the range. read more

I used to use Mega for everything, however, I got tired of their obnoxious mark ups which made it easy to start purchasing elsewhere. So now I go there to to just "window shop" since they do have the biggest selection out there. That being said, I walked in the other night for the first time since the expansion to look at an A/R and a NitroMag shotgun. Be prepared to now show your FOID card at the door, I wasn't, so the oger at the door gave me an attitude since I walked right past him. After being "allowed" to enter the store, I had to interupt (or at least thats the look I got) a conversation between two employees to look at what I came to see. Now before this employee would even bring something off the shelf, he asked to see my FOID card despite showing it to even enter the building. For the sake of avoiding an arguement, I gave him my card. I was willing to overlook everything that preceeded this moment because it was just the typical MegaSports I'm better than you attitude. He then proceeds to ask me if all the information on the card is correct or have I moved. I absolutely wanted to snatch this little prick over the counter !! As this card is issued by the state, and it's my responsibility to update the state of any changes and when you can show me a badge, you can ask me about my personal information. In my opinion, if you have walked around any number of gun shops you will notice that the one's that give the worse service are the ones that have employees "displaying" their side arms for everyone to see. MegaSports does this really well !! For the record, I will NEVER purchase anything from this arrogant establishment. There are plenty of other shops that are more than happy to take my money and not make me feel as though I should thank "them" for it. Just wanted to respond to some of the negative reviews I've been reading about Mega Sports. I am familiar with Mega Sports and have shopped there over the years purchasing guns and other items from time to time. They have some great guys there such as Josh, Brian, Scott and Jeremy to name a few. I've also shopped at the Joliet Gander Mountain and know Dave, April, and Oswego Bob who are great to work with also. Shopping at a Gun Shop is a totally different experience than shopping for any other big ticket item, as there is considerable liability involved with any firearm purchase. Proper respect for gun handling is of utmost importance. Checking the gun clear, not slamming the slide on a semi-auto, keeping your finger off the trigger, not sweeping other customers in the store with the barrel, not dry firing a gun without a snap cap, are all important things. Consider that in many cases the salesperson does not know you and yet they are handing over an unloaded pistol or revolver for you to inspect after checking your FOID. Chances are they won't be able to respond quickly enough if you happen to mishandle, drop, damage, or run off with the gun. What I've found works great for me is giving the Gun Sales Associates respect and asking them prior to doing anything with the gun. I always ask first if it's okay to check the trigger pull on a pistol or revolver that has a hammer, and if they say okay then lower the hammer down slowly. Otherwise, they can provide a snap cap as needed. If you need a holster, they will grab a holster and check it out on a gun in the case matching yours, as they did for me. They will show you one gun at a time and then put it away in the case before showing you another firearm. Shopping for a gun is serious business, so I try not to take things personally. The Gun Salesperson's attitude in most cases will be a reflection on how you treat them and your respect for the firearm when handling it. If you are unfamiliar with a firearm, or a first time buyer, be up front about it and they will in most cases spend extra time going over the features and may provide some good recommendations as well. Sure, there may be exceptions to this but in most cases you have a chance to get them on your side. What doesn't work in a Gun Shop is being cavalier about guns, or un-holstering your CCW piece and sticking it in different holsters displayed in the holster aisle, or inspecting a revolver and pulling the trigger repeatedly, or checking for fit of a pocket LCP or Keltec on your person, without asking or stating your intentions. Remember you are an unknown to them. Mega Sports has an amazing selection of guns and a knowledgeable Staff. Making sure the Gun Transfer paperwork is in compliance and complete is extremely important as serious repercussions can occur if it isn't. I went in there and waited in line during the height of the gun buying and ammunition shortages happening a few years back. Considering the huge volume of sales, I thought Mega Sports handled it the best they could, since they needed to maintain control of the situation. I am a collector and I purchased 7 guns from them over a 7 week period. I'll admit that I am also binge buying due to pending legislation. While there I tried to purchase 2 additional guns. Sales rep dissapeared to get approval, when he returned he circled around me with the intention on spinning me around 180 degrees so that my back was turned to the back of the store. The sales rep proceeded to tell me that the new purchases would make this number 8 & 9 and that no one has ever puchased that many guns from them in that short of period. He said that they don't feel comfortable selling any more guns to me. You'd think they would instead tell me what a great customer I am. The reason they turned me 180 degrees around was so that one of their thug employees can cover me ready with his gun in holster anticipating problems from me when receiving the disappointing news. So... If you are too good of a customer they put someone behind you waiting to draw their weapon on you. I had another $6k to sepnd on guns. Customer service left with the renovation! Purchased guns here in 2011 & 2012 and was impressed with friendly customer service. This is no longer the case this year. Recently stopped by after not being here since spring 2012: I was shocked at all the changes. You must show FOID card upon entering the store. No cell phone use allowed while in the store. Supposedly to curb straw purchases. I was reading the news on my phone (while waiting in line to see a gun, see below) and was told to put it away. Must stand in line to talk to someone about guns. You need to show FOID card once again to get in this line. When you finally get a salesperson after reaching the front of the line, you must once again show you FOID card before handling the firearm. They will not sell any black guns (modern sporting rifles, AR-15, etc.) to Cook County residents. This includes AR-style .22 caliber rifles. Claims it has something to do with new Cook County Ordinance. Oddly, gun dealers in Cook County are still selling AR-style rifles. My supposition is the owner is being strong-armed by Chicago machine or local politicians. Either way, there is something fishy going on with this policy. Store hours are only 9-2 on Saturday and 10-2 on Sunday, which is only posted on the door and not on the web site. This store used to be open late evenings. I don't know how some of these people had that bad of an experience. The gun prices are not that bad at all. Your not gonna get the cheapest but small shops are definitely more expensive at least 50% of the time. EVERY GUN YOU CAN EVER NEED. Ammo is priced regular. Have not tried the range. Its not really a range place. They have a wide selection of guns, safes, gear, TONS OF ACCESSORIES. Im a fan. drive 40 min to check out most things i need. Never had this so called problem with my foid. I simply say hey thats a cool desert eagle can i see it, "let me see your foid" show them my foid and i get to check that babe out. They act like they're doing you a favor by attending to you. Worst customer service. Priced very high. I gave them several opportunities to earn my business and every time they disappoint.
