So for some reason (without news/word on it as far as I know), Megabus decided to no longer offer rides to NYC from downtown Providence. I only have one question: Why? Its closer to NYC, easier to get access to drive to NYC as far as the Highway system goes, and has a never ending supply of riders to go round trip...doesn't particularly seem like a wise business decision, but It's not my company so it what it is. I am a fan of Megabus because of the low fares to NYC. On a good day you can travel one way for $1. Other days it might range between $10-30. Still a great deal. The inconsistency of the buses is a problem. Sometimes they do not arrive on time and passengers have to wait out in the cold or weather for 20-30-20 minutes before the bus arrives. Other times, the WiFi does not work, that is a problem if you plan on using it for 3-4 hours and it does not work. Most of the drivers are polite and helpful. Still, a low cost option out of Providence...not top in terms of customer service though. read more

So, about Megabus... it'll get you there. Maybe not on time. Maybe not even the same day. But it'll get you there. I've had incredible experiences and I've had nightmare-ish ones that I've tried hard to block out. It's such a mixed bag in terms of what your experience with Megabus will be. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Reasons to use megabus: - Cheap tickets, especially if you buy early - On less busy travel days (weekday or non-holiday), you'll likely have two seats to yourself - They have a few newer buses which are actually comfortable, clean, and not stuffy - Ease of use in terms of purchasing tickets online and boarding the bus - Friendly drivers for the most part - Fairly convenient pick up/drop off locations for the PVD- NYC route Reasons not to use megabus: - Terrible choice of routes (driving THROUGH Times Square) - Switching drivers along the route in CT (adds further travel time) - Poor, poor communication when things go wrong (they tend to go wrong) - Buses late in arriving to pick you up. Buses late in arriving at your destination. - Wifi is a myth, power outlets sometimes work - Legroom is minimal I've taken megabus home plenty of times and each time, even though at times they've worn my patience thin, it's gotten me there. If you can afford the premium, obviously Amtrak is the better bet, but that'll cost you. Don't be late. The one time you are, Megabus will be early. Good luck read more

I commute to NYC often now that I live in Providence. I also commuted between Boston and NYC quite often when I lived there, though I primarily used the Bolt Bus. It's a very convenient way to travel. Fortunately I've never had to wait around for a bus and the buses always have lots of room, outlets and sometimes WiFI. Be smart about when you leave and when you hope to arrive. Traffic is traffic, so the earlier you can travel, the better. Try to avoid arriving in NYC anytime between 5 and 7 because, well it's NYC and that's going to mean lots of traffic. When I take the bus I always plan to be flexible on the time I arrive because traffic and weather are real. But if you take an afternoon bus, chances are the bus will arrive right on time and drop you off minutes from Penn Station! The several times I've taken this bus from Providence to NYC it was on time, efficient and INCREDIBLY CHEAP. If you travel during the week you can easily buy a $10 ticket to and from NYC. If you're traveling on the weekend it will likely be closer to $30 each way. read more

When the New York-Providence line first opened with Megabus, it was much better. Significant delays are commonplace. You can generally expect to be a bit nauseous throughout your trip - there are a lot of people and there's no fresh air. My most recent experience really annoyed me however; I used to get the same trip, and it was providence to New York direct. This time around both of my trips include two out of the way stops, and I've had to wait for drivers to change in some random area. It's really unprofessional that they didn't list multiple stops on the ticket purchase website nor was it in my ticket email. A 3 hour 15 minute commute has realistically become 5+ hours. TERRIBLE experience with Megabus. Purchased a ticket from New York to Boston (10/21/2018 at 11:30AM). Reached the pickup spot on time only to find out that the bus was cancelled. WTF Megabus??? Learn to adhere to your commitments for your paying customers. This is one of the fundamentals of any business. There were more angry and frustrated customers at the pickup site. Megabus customer service employee asked us to get a refund or reschedule with absolutely no regards to the customer experience. To add to the Megabus misery, there weren't any buses to reschedule on that day. So, I had to miss a full day of work to reach Boston on Monday night. I would rather pay a little more to other transportation services to ensure my travel plans. read more

I have been taking Megabus for a few years now. At first, the service/price was great but has seemed to have gone down hill (outlets & wifi not working, loud/rude people on the bus,cleanliness,calling customer service). I have noticed quite a bit of bad reviews lately but decided to continue using this service. My most recent trip was this past weekend roundtrip to NYC. I have to say it seems that someone is reading the comments and is actually doing something about it. Both trips were great! Outlets worked, wifi worked, bathrooms were clean, one bus the bathroom actually smelled like cinnamon!! Was a VERY pleasant ride, both ways. The price wasn't $1 but $42 roundtrip for 2 people is pretty great, I'll take it! Thank you Megabus! Now they have changed their services and raised prices, sorry, it's been a lot of fun Megabus but I'm now forced to change to a different bus line :( read more

The service was great on Megabus, we left on time and the staff was amazing. The bathroom was relatively clean as well. The only problem was the Internet did not work on either leg of our trip and the bus was freezing even with a sweater. You get what you pay for... A $50 round trip to NYC from PVD is not too shabby (and that was purchased only one day before the trip)... But there are some drawbacks. For one, none of the power outlets worked on either of the busses I was on. Similarly, both busses had abysmal restrooms - one of the busses had even run out of hand sanitizer in there. The bus left on time, and got me there when expected. One leg took longer than advertised, but due to no fault of the driver - there was simply heavy traffic. Overall, I'd probably use it again because the price is right and it's a lot better than driving.... But don't expect any frills. read more

Trip from Vermont to Boston. My sons bus broke down on highway, one hour into trip. Broken transmission. Son say on the bus for several hours with no estimated time for replacement bus. Eventually the driver told the bus load of passengers they should find their own way back to Burlington Vt. Megabus refused to reimburse for purchased tickets. Worst customer service ever. Blanket response that it's "against company policy!" They suck. Never again will anyone in my family use this company. No surprise that they receive such poor reviews! read more

After years of speeding tickets and getting gouged on Acela train tickets to and from NYC, I decided to try out Megabus. I'm glad I did, because even booking last minute, a one way ticket back to Providence costs about 1/2 of a tank of gas + tolls, 1/3 of a speeding ticket, 1/4 of a local train ticket, 1/6 of an Acela express train ticket, and 1/10 and more of a parking ticket and towing costs (don't ask) at only an additional half an hour travel premium versus taking the train. I've had 3 round trips so far, with room to stretch out across two seats on new buses while getting dropped off in NYC convenient to Herald Square (34th btw 10th and 11th ave). Not bad. read more

I've been taking buses from Boston to NYC Maybe once or twice a month for the past 5 years. I usually stick with the chinatown buses (cause of prices) but since those shut down, I started taking Go Buses (awesome). but, go buses didn't have any available seats one day so I decided to just go with Megabus. THE BUS BROKE DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY FOR 4 HOURS!!!!!! We were stuck 45 mins outside of Boston!!! FOR 4 HOURS. And Megabus didn't send another bus to come get us!! Nice to have free WiFi but it is not always working. If it is not the driver may claim to not know anything about it, not be able to fix it, and not even know the name of the MegaBus network that you should look for. "I don't have any information about it." The driver's "I really don't care and stop asking me about it" attitude might throw some people off. It's great to be able to reserve a specific seat but not so great when you get on the bus and someone is in your reserved seat. At least the squatters tend to move when confronted (by you, not the driver). Definitely could be better. read more

Only good thing about megabus is the decent prices. Both trips I've been on have been late to leave, 2+hours late to arrive, and no communication. My BOS-NYC trip made three stops, one of which was to switch drivers. My return trip hasn't stopped once and I'm 5+ hours into a 4.5 hour trip. Ugh I am hating this! read more

I have had very good experiences on the Megabus. Have taken it over twenty times and never more than $20 roundtrip! Hell I'm the reason you can't find $1 seats because when dates become available I buy them. Never has there been a problem with the a/c though the wifi is hit or miss. And yes thanks to traffic they have been late a few times but that happens. Besides I made them late once myself, having a heart attack on the bus can do that. Happened last year and the driver and passengers were very helpful. I AM a loyal costumer and love this bus line! read more

I've been taking the megabus for the last 2years at least twice a month. The prices are very reasonably but even though they say the buses have wifi they barely ever do. The last time I took the bus I was literary sick the entire ride to NYC because the whole downstairs area of the bus smelled like urine. Even though I love taking the megabus I can't stand the fact that the bathrooms always smell and are always dirty and also that there is NEVER wifi and if there is it only works for about 30 minutes !! read more

I have used Mega bus several times use to be better service and price. Nowadays the chargers (electrical outlets) don't work and maintenance on these buses seem to lag. They really use price hiking online systems another one just like airlines. Big companies like this have put all Chinese operated buses to close which were always cheap and steady on the price. read more

I've taken Megabus many times, mostly between Boston and New York. It has never once arrived on time. This matters a lot to me because I go to New York for embassy related stuff and any delay can mean I'll miss the opening hours. I don't understand why Megabus has to drive through the middle of Manhattan. Other bus lines, e.g., Lucky Star, don't, and the time wasted getting in and out of NYC is significantly shorter. I'm writing this review at a time when the bus should have been at the destination already but when according to Google it is still one hour away. Horrible. Other peeves: No storage above seats so there's no option for a laptop bag/backpack than under the seat. Uncomfortable seats. Stinky bathrooms. If it weren't for the $5 trips I get sometimes I would never ride Megabus again. read more

Find another way to travel! I don't normally write reviews, but I'm just so appalled by Megabus's service that I need to. I'm currently 5 hours into a trip that would have taken 3.5 driving from NYC to Boston, and I still have another 2 hours left. The driver took an absurdly slow route out of NYC, which already put us behind schedule, and then made no effort to evade a large bout of traffic. Additionally, it's around 80° in the bus. A little warm! Needless to say, I will never be taking a Megabus again! read more

Worst bus I've ever take. To NYC ! I much rather take lucky star!! My husband wanted to try something new! So we decided on megabus! The seats are way too close together!! Passengers were very rude and kept grabbing on my seat as well as kicking it! The bathroom was the worst thing I've ever seen! And not even 15minutes into our trip a loud buzzing noise came on but only the section I was in! I had to fight with the driver to move into a vacant seat! I thought I was going to have an anxiety because of the loud piercing noise !! Don't spend your money!! read more

On a trip from New York to Boston. The 6:40 PM bus didn't even board till 6:50. The driver. Was the worst! There was no traffic on the highway and he only did 50 to 53 MPH, in a 65 MPH zone. With no one in front of him, he would press the breaks an slow down constantly. We had trucks, buses and cars passing us on both sides. We were so far behind schedule because of him!!! He then pulls over at a rest area so passengers could get something to eat. What????? Really??? It's 11:00 PM now and we were suppose to be in Boston at 10:55 PM. There is no excuse horrible driving. Mega Bus needs to look a little deeper into who they have driving. I'm not sure if the driver has night vision problems or he was just not an experienced driver? He should be tested and taken off the road! Getting into a destination city over an hour after the scheduled time in unacceptable with no traffic or mechanical issues!! NEVER AGAIN!!!! Used this bus company for a trip to NYC out of Providence when we showed they picked us up at a different spot that they told us to be at. Had to walk about 300 yards to catch the bus and be greeted by a rude and total jerk of a driver. 1st problem when we met the bus it wasn't the double decker that I paid extra for, 2nd problem Bus broke down 1/2hr away from our destination to have the bus start filling with smoke and was told to get off. Was told we could go to the garage and wait for it to be fixed or find another way to our destination. After numerous calls and e-mails to the complaint dept. this went no where. There are a lot of complaints on line about Megabus - but the Providence to NY trip is very good. This is the first time I've gone by bus and I was somewhat worried about safety. Don't worry. And it is cheap. We paid $34 rt each from Fairhaven MA (the parking spot and end terminal for the Providence/NY run). I also found that I could buy future tickets for as little as $4 rt - how do you beat that? This run does not get crowded so we had lots of room - the AC worked fine. Buses left on time - yes they were late getting in both ways but there was so much construction on the highways - they can't help that. The staff was so courteous and helpful when we looked for our return bus on W. 34th street. He couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. Tip: the arrival and debarkation locations in NY are different. When you are returning - walk west down W. 34th street until you cross 11th avenue and then cross the street immediately to get on the other side (the sidewalk on the eastbound side is closed to pedestrians) - you'll see people lined up and street food vendors. Ask the staff where you should wait (the different buses are in different lines). They will call you when your bus is ready to board. Note that you are waiting on a sidewalk with no shelter so be prepared if rain is forecast. All in all - a great value and I have no hesitation to use this again. read more

I was traveling from NYC to Boston, we met the bus at 34th st & 11 ave. Waited for the bus to be ready in the freezing cold and long lines for about 45 mins. this was better than my last trip waiting in the rain ( I didn't learn). Finally got on the bus numb finger, toes and face, to my surprised the whole ride there was no heat on the bus and the WiFi sucks as usual. The only reason I gave them 2 stars was because the guys working out in the cold were very nice and professional. read more

Zero stars. Would not suggest using this service. Bought a ticket in the morning for a ride from Providence to Fairhaven at 6pm that evening. Arrived at the designated bus stop at 5:41. One other travel asked if I was also riding Megabus so I confirmed. At 6:30 I called customer service to inquire about the location of the bus. The person I spoke with did try to help, but said the bus had already arrived in Fairhaven, meaning the bus was either incredibly early or did not stop at all. After writing an email complaint I was told Megabus DOES NOT OFFER REFUNDS. Purchase tickets at your own risk. read more

I booked a bus ride from Fall River, Massachusetts to New Haven, Connecticut on 9/10. It was supposed to be at the bus station at 5:15pm but never showed. I was there at 4:40pm till about 7:30pm at night. I called their customer service number multiple times and was told to call back in about 15 minutes every time I called. All I asked for was an eta on the bus. No one could give me an answer so I told my mother to try and call but all they did was give her a hard time as well. They were very rude by hanging up on my mother several times and then continuing to lie to her saying that he bus had already came at 5:17pm. I was at the bus stop since 4:40pm so that was not possible. I also know that I was at the right stop because a Mega bus did come to that stop but it came from New Haven. He told me that my bus would be late and that there was about 50-60 people waiting in providence for my same bus. It was supposed to stop at Fall River, then go to Providence, then end at New Haven. I am very upset with Mega Bus because if it wasn't for my girlfriends parents who had to fill up their gas tank just to drive me all the way to New Haven and drive back to Fall River in the same night, then I would have been stuck at that bus stop all night long, in a city I did NOT know. To top it off, they don't want to refund my money and even told my mother that I had to buy a new ticket! This is also not the first time this happened to me. On 9/08 I was taking a bus from New Haven to UMASS Dartmouth and the bus was about an hour and a half late. This bus is very inconsistent and does not seem to care about their customers at all. I would seriously recommend NOT to even think about using this bus company unless you want to be stranded in an unknown city at night. read more

I took this bus from New York City to Providence. My experience was HORRIBLE and I'm a very easy going/easy to please person. I've never been on here to write a bad review. Let me start of by saying I paid $55 for my ticket, even in advance. We first arrived to the stop in New York about an hour early to ensure good seats. One of the attendants told us our bus had arrived and we had to move up to it. Then he said he made a mistake and we had to go back where we lost our spot in line we had gotten there early for. Annoying! Our bus was supposed to get there at 4:20 pm and didn't arrive until 5:00. When it finally arrived we sat down to find that the bus was absolutely filthy. There was trash from the previous passengers, gum caked in the cupholders, some brown mystery spots all over the ceiling above us and something smeared all over the windows. I was so grossed out but I just sat and didn't touch anything. Once we started driving the a/c kept getting colder and colder. I was still okay with this because I'd rather it be cold than hot. We got on the road and 30 minutes later pulled over because the a/c downstairs wasn't working at all. We sat on the side of the highway for at least 20 minutes while another Megabus driver tried to fix it. We got back on the road and about 15 minutes later the a/c shut off completely both upstairs and downstairs. I can say that 100 people on one bus with no air filtration starts to smell really bad really quickly. We could smell the bathroom from upstairs. I can only imagine what it smelled like downstairs. It was all around a gross and uncomfortable experience. I would much rather pay a little more money for a clean and pleasant experience. I will not be travelling on Megabus again. read more

Megabus SUCKS!! They are more than happy to rob you of your money. I purchased a megabus ticket on 8/10/15 at 4:00 p.m. for the 4:45 p.m. bus from Providence to NY departing that same day. I completed the purchase using my cell phone, and got to the megabus screen showing the confirmation number and telling me that an email would be sent to my email address. About 20 minutes before the bus arrived I checked my email to find that I had not received a confirmation email. I checked the megabus web page to find that the page with the confirmation number was gone. I attempted to "go back" to the previous screen but instead got a notice that the transaction has processed twice. Additional attempts to renavigate the website were fruitless, in fact the site showed that no ticket had been purchased. After waiting nearly an hour in the hot sun, when the bus arrived the bus driver refused to let me get on the bus because I could not produce the confirmation number. He offered no help whatsoever for me to attempt to resolve the situation, including failing to give me the number to customer service, which I learned later I could have called at that time for assistance. I checked my bank account the following morning and discovered a charge for $22.50 from megabus. When I called megabus I was told by 3 separate "customer service" agents that they could not refund my money or give me a ticket for another trip. read more
