This is the third 1 star review I have ever given on Yelp, of the 300+ reviews I have written, and this company doesn't even deserve the 1 star I have to give it. Terrible, terrible company! They do not have the interests of their customers in mind at all. They are only out to make a profit and everything they did this weekend really exemplifies this.
For one thing, when we went to the pickup "station," the place was a mess. It was raining and they didn't even have tarps up. They had really crappy tents. It looked like they had gone and bought a bunch of thin picnic spreads and put them up on poles. They didn't even have tarps! The "tents" kept ripping and water kept pouring on all the customers.
The line was completely disorganized. For the NYC destination, there were at least 4 separate lines and nothing was clearly marked. The bus took forever to board and when we did board, the woman scanning the tickets started with the first section, even though people were coming in that had not been standing there for as long as we had. In fact, the woman scanned people who were just arriving before us, even though we had stood in the line far longer than they had. We mentioned this to her and she had an attitude and would not scan the other lines before the newcomers... wow.
When we put our luggage under the bus, there was no method to the madness. Everyone just stuffed their suitcases under there. There is no security or anything. And when it was time to take our suitcases, it was chaotic. Absolutely chaotic. Anyone could take anyone's suitcase! it was absolute madness.
The bus itself had outlets but none of them were working!
The bus ride was also very bumpy and made a very random stop at the side of the road in New Jersey, which was very weird because we didn't stop to get gas or anything and we didn't even stop at a center for people to use the restroom and we were just 20 minutes away from our destination.
The bus did not make a single stop, even though there is only one bathroom on board and people wanted to stretch their legs, I'm sure.
But all of that - that was the least of our concerns. The most EGREGIOUS thing that this bus company did happened for our return. We went to NYC just days before Hurricane Irene was supposed to hit. We had a return bus trip for Saturday afternoon, around when Irene was supposed to hit, and we figured we didn't want to be taking a bus back during a hurricane so instead we called and asked to move up our bus time. They said that if we didn't change it within 24 hours, we would be charged more... Um, really? Even if a natural disaster like a freaking hurricane was coming? Wow, how SCAMMY!
But that wasn't the end of it - so we paid the extra money and we moved our bus up to 9:30 AM on Saturday so we could be out of NYC and off the roads when the hurricane was set to hit. We asked the person over the phone about whether the services would be shut due to the storm and she said no and that they were "monitoring" the situation, whatever that means...
So we went about our merry way and did our NYC things and got back, exhausted that night at around midnight. At 11:50 PM, Megabus sent its customers (including us) an e-mail that our morning bus had been canceled due to the storm. Umm... really??? You send this e-mail to us at 11:50 PM, right before our scheduled departure? WOW! Of course the service lines were NOT open at that time, and of course we could not reschedule then. And of course all subways and buses in NYC would be shut down the next day at noon. There was nothing we could do at that point. To add insult to injury, the e-mail they sent indicated that IF WE WANTED, we could get a refund if we e-mailed them. Oh ok, no it's ok, you can have the money you charged us and the extra too. Hell yes we want a refund! For the record, my friend e-mailed them for a refund and never got a response. She'll have to put a stop to her credit card charges for the company.
At that point, it was difficult for us to do anything. What we had to do was pay $200 each for a train ticket out of NYC the next morning. We got lucky we even got train tickets and our train (which left at 8 AM) was one of the last trains out of New York City the next day.
Megabus is a sham, a scam, and everything else that is horrible! They are ONLY out for themselves. They never sent us any e-mails that they MIGHT have to cancel the buses due to weather. Nothing had changed between 7 PM and 11:50 PM that night! In fact, in that time, Hurricane Irene had downgraded from a Category 3 hurricane to a Category 2! If they had told us earlier, we would have made alternate arrangements or perhaps we could have asked them to put us on another bus. They never even gave us options for alternate bus rides back!
How shady! It goes without saying that i'll never do business with this company again and I will caution EVERYONE against it! read more
