Megah Brown's is my go-to place for premium haircuts. The barbershop is in a great part of Oakland, which makes it easy to get to by bus or BART. Once you walk in, you'll immediately notice how nicely decorated this place is. A huge flatscreen TV hangs from the top wall, giving you a perfect view of the game or movie from the chair. Comfy couches populate the room and a nice fish tank sits on the window, giving the place personality. The barber is a pretty cool dude. Unlike most barbers, he knows his clients by name and actually cares about who they are. He's an expert at cutting and knows how to incorporate precise directions into his craft. Since his services are by appointment only, you don't have to worry about waiting an hour before getting your cut. Prices are cheap depending on the kind of cut you want. After nearly 30 years with the same barber I moved on because my work is no longer close to him and traffic is bad going to north Berkeley most of the time---he is also close to retiring. A friend suggested Megah Brown's with enthusiasm, I thought "why Not?" I arrived and was warmly greeted. We chatted and found we had a similar sense of humor. I did not know what to tell him about my hair as I am so used to the regular guy knowing what to do...I recently shaved off my beard for the first time since 1966 and did not know how that would affect my look. Forty-five minutes later and viola! My wife thinks it is a bit too short but she just isn;t used to me with so much less hair. When it grows to where she likes it I will take a picture to bring the next time. Hooray for this new find in downtown Oakland but just enough off the main streets for easy meter parking. He plans to bring a few more barbers in and then there will be chairs upstairs as well. I've been going to Damien since he first started cutting hair in Oakland. He walked up to me on the street in Downtown Oakland those many years ago and politely offered me his card and told me he was going to start cutting hair in downtown Oakland in his own chair. My office was downtown then. I took him up on his offer and never looked for another barber. My office moved all over the bay - but my barber remained the same. Over the years we have become friends - he even asked me to be in his wedding. We have shared many stores over the years in that chair - love, life and loss and everything in between. The quality of his work and attention to detail are the work of a craftsman. And his "chair-side" manner is without equal. I've seen him with young people, the elderly and each person is is given special attention to detail. And what I like the most is that he keeps the shops atmosphere respectful. This dood is the TRUTH! I felt a review should be given because this guys talent with the clippers is second to none. What I love about this shop is not only is the cuts on point but he stays true to the appointment time. I've been to a few shops where I'm scheduled for a certain time and I won't be seen till 30 minutes after. With Megah it's in and out on the given time scheduled. While your on the chair the convos you have is genuine and fluid. Initially he might rub off on some people as rude when you first walk through the door or call for an appointment but that's only because his focus is making sure the person on the chair gets exactly what they want and more! I was thinking of givin him a 1 star so he won't get over booked but I don't think he'll appreciate that. =P. Definitely recommend Damion aka Megah. Always walking out feeling fresh. read more

I went to Megah Brown's on Wednesday September 30th for the first time; when I made the appointment I asked Damion if he did women's hair and his answer was yes! Me being a Breast Cancer survivor with apolecia I didn't know what to expect, I've been to a few barbers in Oakalnd that talk a good game but never quite live up to what you expect. At first I was a little shock and even said I didn't want my hair cut that short, but once I got home and looked at the beautiful cut he gave me, I had to call Damion back and say thank you I love it!
